I have a suggestion that calls for some feedback from folks overseas. It certainly seems fair to ask for compensation for the expense, but the amount of compensation aside, for people in many other countries sending US dollars is little more pratical than sending blank tapes. For those of you in countries where it may be difficult or expensive to convert your currency into dollars, how difficult and expensive are International Reply Coupons (IRCs) to get from your post (mail) offices? A few years ago we corresponded a lot with small fanzines overseas and we sent the publishers IRCs to cover their printing and postage expense. I vaguely recall that they cost about 60 cents and could be redeemed for one half-ounce of international postage to any country that was part of the International Postal Union, which was nearly every country with a significant amount of international mail volume. The idea in sending IRCs was that if you could buy IRCs in your country the folks you send them to could use them to pay for postage to send stuff back to you. IRCs wouldn't directly pay for the tapes -- I don't think you can literally cash them in for US dollars or any other currency -- but at least that's a way for people to pay for their postage and some amount over that to cover a couple bucks for the tapes, which may be the best way to go for people who can't send you negotiable documents (this is sounding more and more like a Xerox ad!) easily exchanged into dollars. As for the cost of the tapes, the person asking to be sent Angelfood might still need to enclose a tape, but at least this way you have covered the expense of mailing the tape back to them (which might be several dollars expense in itself) and the tape you send our benevelont coordinators might just happen to have some exotic music of interest...which might make sending the tape worthwhile on its own. This info about IRCs may all out-of-date for all I know, with free trade treaties and the internet maybe you can work something out with online EFT, but if you're working out of your kitchen, IRCs may still be a good alternative. And I do encourage you to work out of your kitchen. If it gets lonely, you can always make some bacon and eggs, break the yolks and make a smiley face, etc. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Jan 1998 01:30:58 EST From: QTPY SK8R2 Subject: jewel's pic hi EDA's~ im back...i had major problems with my computer but its back to new now.I dont think this was mentioned but in a new magazine called "teen people" there is quite a big pic of jewel signing a concert poster from hard rock cafe in barcelona, and a small pic of her at the music awards. Both good pics. The magazine is worth buying cuz it has MANY celebrity pics just to name a few : fiona apple, jennifer love hewitt, janet jackson, neve campell, spice girls, missy elliot, sarah michelle gellar...it also has some very interesting articles.it is only $3 dollars in the us and found at any magazine stand or grocery store. It's nice to be back!! love always, jamie *twinkling angel* ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Jan 1998 08:54:19 -0500 From: thumbkin@juno.com (Christa L Hinman) Subject: my jewel story Hey all EDAs out there, I am a newbie to the list and I have decided to tell all of you my JEWEL story. I will know thank you if you read all of it, 'cause later I'll forget, I'm sure. So, thank you for reading it, if you do. I'll try to make it short. It all started in the car. I have heard the song WWSYS but I never knew who it was by. Then I heard the song YWMFM on the radio in the car when we were on our way into Brockport. ( Brockport is near Rochester, NY. If there are any EDAs that are reading this that don't know where NY is, it is in the USA. I know there is at least one EDA in Australia, true? If there are any EDAs near Rochester NY, please let me know, I'll love to meet new people.) I decided that I liked this song, YWMFM, and I managed to catch who the song was by, Jewel of course. I remember thinking "Jewel, I'll have to remember that." I did, of course, then my absolutely fav. top single later was FG. I always freaked when I heard this song. Now, that I am on the Jewel mailing list, I am the biggest fan in Holley, that is, Holley is right outside of Brockport. Then, Christmas '97 I got POY cd. Now I can't wait for her new album. That reminds me, does anyone have the exact date for this new album to come out? I have heard a ton of different dates. If you know the exact date, please Email me privately. Thanx!! By the way, I would like to thank you again for reading my story, if you did. Got to go. Oh! they also had this advertisment for the Entertainment weekly 1998 yearbook, for 19.95...and guess who the put on THE COVER!!! yep, Jewel! Yay! Although I won't buy it...it's still neat to see that she's so big she's on the cover of a 1998 yearbook! =) The pic on the cover is in the same clothes as the rolling stone cover she did, 'cept in a different pose. Well, that's all. And for all the fellow angels who are taking finals ... GOOD LUCK! I flip the TV on and there=92s was this video. I was like who the hell is this b*tch singing in the bathroom? So I flip it right away. The next week I saw it again. I was like this b*tch again! But wait, she=92s kinda hot. Once again I didn=92t listen to the song or get the name of the artist. Then in august my aunt and I heard this song. It was by donna lewis-I love you always forever. My aunt was like who is this? I was like=85.uh=85.Jewel?She goes really?I said"I guess". I heard of the name Jewel but had no idea what she sung just her name. Then I heard YWMFM on the radio later in the fall and yet Jewel didn=92t catch my attention. That same day I first heard YWMFM I went to Blockbuster with my sister and started sing in the car. I brush my teeth and I put the cap back on. My sister was like why are you singing the stupid lines, those aren=92t even the chourus. I replied= , I don=92t know I just heard it once. She then pulls the single of ywmfm. I was like oh my god this is the song. This is the song!!!!! This is the song!!!!I asked who is it? She said Jewel. I was like who is Jewel? (even though I said her name two months ago). The next day I bought the single for my self. I never gave foolish games a chance. I kept playing YWMFM over and over and over. It was my november song and carried onto december. Then I saw the video for YWMFM and fell in love with her, not just the song but with her. Then I saw WWSYS for the 3rd time and saw the titl for the first time and it said Jewel Who will save your soul. I was like no way!! The bitch(she=92s not a bitch I take my word back rigth away) from the bathroom sings this song! I was like she look like 2 years younger in the video from YWMFM. She went from a kid to an adult in 2 videos! I hactually sat down and listen to WWSYS and fell in love. Then one day I finally gave foolsih games a chance and fell in love. That instant when I heard foolsih games I went and got POY. It started off crappy but I continue to keep jewel in my mind. She wasn=92t my fav because for a guy to like a girl for an artist in high school isn=92t a really good idea to be manly and be tough= . But I kept in secret to keep her in my mind. I saw her on VH1 on my b-day jan. 5, 1997 presenting the grammies with busta ryhmes and he said her name all funny. (jew- welle). Then I saw her on hard rock in march and said she is so good. Then on this exact date which I will never forget April 26th, 1997 Saturday Night Live said in 2 weeks will have Musical guest Jewel. I marked my calenders and waited day after day til May 10th, 1997 for her appearnce.(this is also the date in the corner of fiona apple=92s video criminal for those fans. Everytime I see the video and see that date I think of the Saturday night live appearance. My mom was bitching and I was grounded too that week and she said no TV or anything. So I said I=92m going to sleep early tonight. She checked in at about 11:00 just before jewel was coming on. I was like damn it so I turned it off. She came in and then left. I flip it right back and her her sing. I was like this is it Jewel is my fave. I don=92t give a rat ass who cares. = I =91ve been hearing about this ROCKFEST 1997 stuff and Jewel was going to be there. I was like man I wish I could see her. Then I said what is Jewel doing at the Rockfest in Dallas. I live in Austin, TX. Rockfest is for alternative people. No Doubt, Bush, Counting Crows, Nixons, Wallflowers, Matchbox 20, Third Eye Blind, Sugar Ray. Jewel??Then on June 14th my uncle had a wedding in Dallas. Just my luck I was in Dallas 1 week before the Rockfest! My cosuin and my aunt were talking aobut the rockfest they were going to. I was like do you guys have any extra tickets? They were like we have 50 million. They were free. I was like my first jewel concert for free. They asked who do you want to see? I said only jewel tough I like the other guys but mainly jewel. The night before rockfest we heard a half a million people going. My aunt was like you won=92t be able to see jewel close only like a spect. We had second thoughts. But I pop in YWMFM and said,=94hell no, we going to rockfest! The next morning w= e walk around and what do you know we were near the front row. All we had to do was walk on the side and figth to the middle. I heard jewel sings my song YWMFM and I prayed to god please never let her stop and she sung it again!!!!Then I went home happy and log on to the internet to find other stuff on jewel. I bump into some EDA=92s sites and saw something very interesting. =93You have to see Jewel a second time= =94. I was like yes. That=92s what I have to do. I log onto Adam longfellow=92s Pieces = of Jewel and saw august 4th Lillith in Dallas. I was like lillith? whatever as long as she comes. I got tickets 2 months ahead of time and got 5 rows back of the front row and saw Jewel!!!! Sorry for it to be long but all the EDA=92s story got me to think of all the stuff way back before I love Jewel. I can=92t believe she has this much impact on me. Thanks to all the Eda=92s for posting their thoughts. Hope you guys like mine. I sure did. Well, before the holidays I had pretty much been checking my e- mails every day. But, since I'm back in school and I have tons of homework, I hadn't read my mail in a few weeks. My mailbox was full, and I ended up deleting my almost 1,000 messages. I'm going to try to check my e-mail atleast once very two days now, but unfortunately, I've missed all the news. If someone could please e-mail me and tell what's going on, what kind of threads there are, etc., I would be very grateful! I have noticed that there are a lot of e-mail subjects somewhere along the line of "My Jewel Story" or "How i Discovered Jewel". I would be interested to know what that is. I've also noticed that the "Jewel Is Mean" and "No Se's Not, She's Human" thread is gone. I'm so glad cause that was getting really annoying. Anyway, thanks for your help!! He may have just been referring to the National Anthem in general at the Super Bowls. In the past they have been, at times, over done.
