Here goes: A few month ago my friend Michael started humming some unfamiliar songs.I got curious and wondered where he heard them.(I assumed they were good, because we have a very similar taste in music)and he said-'jewel'.My first reaction was-'huh????'and after he lent me his tapes(it actually took me a couple of month to listen to them....) I fell inlove!!!!(the happy end motive...) I thought I'd start by sharing how I got introduced to Jewel (literally). It's kinda long so bear with me. It was March of 1995 and my friend had begged me to forge out into the cold of Toronto to see Juliana Hatfield do an interview and signing at the storefront radio station. I really didn't want to go but I finally agreed to accompany him. As we waited, and waited for Juliana to arrive we were informed by the station staff that we could go inside but we had to first watch another performer named Jewel, do an on-air interview. I wasn't impressed at the announcement because it meant waiting even longer for Juliana...anyway, we went inside and sat on the floor to wait. The girl walked in and began the interview which we all sort of half listened to without interest. Then she began to sing......I was in awe. This beautiful girl could sing!!!! and with such emotion, it was a very moving moment. After the interview was over, Jewel came over and signed an autograph for me and chatted for a bit. She invited us to her show that night at a small coffeehouse downtown and then she was off. My friend and I waited for Juliana Hatfield to arrive. We got her autograph and then we rushed down to the coffeehouse. We got there just as the opening act was through. I went to washroom and I met Jewel in there. She was surprised to see me and thanked me for coming down from the radio station. The show was absolutely amazing and I saw her there the following week again. After that she played in the region a few more times that spring. It was really nice because those shows were all really small so it was easy to chat with her before and after the shows. Since then I have seen her each time she came around (not as often anymore) and I was privilidged to attend the MuchMusic Intimate and Interactive show here last summer. So, that's my story. Since I'm new to this list, I have a very limited collection of Jewel tapes. A couple of very kind people have helped me out so I do have a couple of tapes but I would love to expand my collection. I'll trade what I have or I could send blank tapes plus postage if anybody is interested in helping me expand my collection. Thanks for reading this long :) Heather hrolph@interlog.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Jan 1998 00:45:50 -0700 (MST) From: Charlie Watkins Subject: A couple of facts about Austin City Limits ACL's 23rd season runs from January 31st to April 4th, 10 weeks. All tapings are done in the summer and shown the following year. So, if Jewel were to be on Austin City Limits, the earliest she could tape would be summer '98 and that show would be shown in the winter/spring of '99. I was checking out on AOL the local San Diego scene section, and in the entertainment section there is a 3 day festival before the Super Bowl. It didn't give any specifics on who(musicians) are playing. Any word if Jewel, Steve, or the Rugburns are going to be a part of this? I want to thank the IRC'er who replied to my whine...hm...question =) From reading the AOL FAQ, looks like its going to be a hassle to start up. I read that AOL operations like to block AOL'ers from using mIRC channels. Hm...any AOL/IRC'er out there? I figured it was my turn to give my intro, so here I go. I'm 12 (will be 13 in March) live in Sarnia, Ontario, and have been on this wonderful list since mid September. I don't remember excatly when I first heard Jewel, but it was sometime in January '97. As soon as I heard YWMFM, I was in love. I had never, and, besides Jewel, have never, heard such wonderful music. I bought POY last February, or late January, and I loved all the songs imeditatly. My personal favourites (on POY) are Angel Standing By, Amen, and YWMFM. I read about the EDAs on the Internet over and over for many months, and I thought the EDAs sounded awesome. Unfortunatly, I didn't find out how to join the EDAs and then I moved, forgetting all about the EDAs (scary, I could never forget about you now). I came across an ad for us in a magazine and imediatly join. I was never dissapointed for a second- more surprised than anything. :) When I was in New Brunswick this summer, I played POY for my best friend, how had never -gasp- heard Jewel before. So here is someone elses Jewel story. Her dad is a social worker, and he said when he was at the jail, whenever Jewel came on the radio or MuchMusic or whatever all the kids would go "Shh, it's Jewel" and stop what they were doing to listen. Pretty cool, don't you think? Anyway, enough of that. The other day I had a terrible thought. WHAT IF "TO LIVE ON" IS RATED R??? I think I would die. Does anyone know what it's gonna be rated? Also, is there any EDAs who live in the Sarnia area? Everyone I know seems to hate Jewel, and it'd be nice to know there's someone here who doesn't. Well, I'm very sorry about the length and poor structure of this e-mail. Thanks to anyone who read it. If anyone wants to talk, just e-mail me. I usally write better. ;) Luv, Tasha The Little Angel "Music is well said to be the language of angels." ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Jan 1998 17:49:20, -0500 From: HCCZ70D@prodigy.com ( SARAH MERRITT) Subject: MTV Top 10 Female Videos I didn't see it posted yet, so I thought I would tell everyone that Jewel came in at #7 with YWMFM on the MTV Top 10 Female Videos of All Time. They said something like, "Jewel is one of the youngest women on this list" or something, and I thought it was rather impressive that she was on the list, being a relatively new performer. She even beat Tina Turner. Wow. Sarah ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Jan 1998 20:34:30 EST From: MAXMOUZE Subject: MY JEWEL STORY (Please read!)
