FREE TICKET, ANYONE??: T'is the tale of the really good ticket I couldn't even give away. So I had that extra ticket, offered it to friend #1, who had plans with a new girlfriend (I got a call from him New Years Eve: his plans fell through, sorry dude!), offered it to friend #2, who unfortunately, couldn't make (**love and support** as always!!!). Offered it to the list, got a very small handful of responses, sent ticket to first who responded. Circumstances changed, that person, sadly, couldn't make it :(. Had boxoffice reprint ticket after telling them I didn't get the first one (can I call myself an angel and boldly lie like that?). Offered ticket to Mary's sister. Mary's sister never showed up at the Hard Rock, I guess her brother went instead, but he took a while to get there, assumed I had given the ticket away, and went home without talking to me!! So there I was, 15 minutes befor the concert with an extra 11th row ticket in my hand. I went up to a few random people (random, meaning: cute girls that I thought might like to see Jewel ;-)) No takers, and a few rude comments about Jewel (did I mention how much I hated that city?). So in desperation, I shouted, "I have a FREE Jewel ticket who wants it?!!" The girl to my left wanted it. After I gave it to her she said: "Great, now I can go see if my friend is in there and meet up with her." So after months of trying to give this ticket to some sweet angel who would love it the way I did, some chick who couldn't give a damn about Jewel ended up with my really expensive ticket, and probably drank the night away, I never saw her again. All this makes me think it was just a bad idea in the first place. Maybe I'm naive (OK, I am) but I would, and probably will, do it again. The opportunity was there to make someone very happy, and I think that makes the risk worth it. Hey, it had better odds than the blackjack tables ;-) I spent the next three days winding my way through the desset (or is that desert, I can never remember). It was such a relief to get out of that horrible city (have I beaten the "I hate Vegas" thing to death or what?) I swear I've never seen so many stars as I did Thursday night somewhere between Nevada and Arizona! Such an amazing sight, I pulled off the expressway, strared at the sky and thought about what a woderful time I had seeing Jewel, and how this must be what the sky looks like up in Alaska! SAN DIEGO: After all that time in the dessert, the rain in San Diego was sooo refreshing (and it made me feel like home even though I was a thousand miles away). The ocean always lifts my spirit! Not knowing if the San Diego gathering was on or not (I don't have a laptop and couldn't check my mail), I spent Saturday and Sunday night at Java Joe's. I'd never been before, it was fantastic!! I saw Kelly Hoyer perform Saturday. She was really great!!!! And when she becomes famous, at least I can say I met her!! Anyone in the San Diego area, check her out!!! Sunday was Ten Cents, two girls playing cool ancient insturments (Hammer and fretterd dosimer? Is that even close?), guitar, singing, what fun!! Are there any angels who've been to Java Joe's and live here in Michigan? Can you tell me if there's any place remotely as cool as Joe's around here? I look and I look, but no luck! Well, so ends my second VERY LONG post. I have jet-lag, I have no idea what time it is anymore, I have to go back to work tommorow, so I'm going to bed now! 'Night all!! - -tony, the angel looking for beauty in the filth the heartless heap upon me ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Jan 98 00:52:28 -0400 From: Tony Potts Subject: New Year's concert and stuff Hi all you beautiful angels!!! I just got home from my much deserved vacation! and I had to give my take on the whole experience. Can I start by saying I really hate Veags! It's really not my kinda place at all. There was no better sight than seeing it in my rear view mirror Thursday night!!! THE CONCET: Yes, the croud sucked, yes, they were rude, drunk, blah, blah, blah. I expected as much, but, whatever! I was there for JEWEL!!! And she kicked a**!!!! I'm not going to analyze or dissect, all I can say is that she touched my soul like she always has. She sings with so much passion and energy, I started to cry!! How does she make me feel that way?! What an amazing woman! To give 100% of herself every time she performs in such a moving and personal way! How deep is her soul?! She's just amazing!! She filled my heart with joy in the cold and heartless city of Vegas, thank you Jewel!!! ANGEL STUFF: I met some terrific angels while I was out there, Mary (who's a much better organizer than she gives herself credit for!), her sister (Liz?), her brother (I'm sorry, I don't remember his name), Tegan (you're so cool! :)), Jason and Sonja (you cracked me up!!), Amber and her freind Lindy (how do you stand living in that city? I love you anyway!!), Heidi and her boyfirend (just remember, the only reason you met Jewel and I didn't is cause we forgot to pick you up ;-) I'm sooooo jealous!!!!), Shelly (how did you end up doing at blackjack? You might have to ask Tegan if you don't remember :)), and Larry, who I met briefly (if I forgot anyone, I'm soo sorry, I'm horrible with names and stuff like that). Thank you all for being the angels you are!!!! I had a woderful time!! JEWEL: I hope Jewel is a primadonna, I hope Jewel is a teddybear, I hope Jewel is a bitch, I hope Jewel is a sweetheart, I hope she cries, I hope she laughs, I hope she's assertive to a fault, I hope she's as passive as a puddle after a slow rain. I hope she yells and screams out of control, I hope she listens for hours to a friend in need. If she weren't all these things, would she be our Jewel? I listen to her music, and I hear all of this, don't you? When I'm famous, you'll say all these things of me. He's a jerk, he's a sweetheart, he used to be so nice, he's always been so cruel, and you'd be right. Not because I'm having a good/bad day, just because I'm all these things at different times and usually at the same time. My opinion, take it or leave it, I don't care. I love what I know about Jewel, and the more I know, the more I love. - -tony, the angel looking for beauty in the filth the heartless heap upon me ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Jan 1998 22:46:24 EST From: PENNY16161 Subject: AOL members: AOL vote AOL and Spinonline are conducting a vote on the music this year. Hey Angels !!! :) The nominations for the 1997 (1998?) Grammy Awards, "covering music for which at least 51% of the airplay happened between Sept. 30, 1996 and Oct. 1 1997"(?) were announced this morning, and one of the five nominees for "Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female" was: JEWEL !!!!! (who else?) , for "Foolish Games". (The other four nominees were Mariah Carey, "Butterfly", Sarah McLachlan, "Building A Mystery", Paula Cole, "Where Have All The Cowboys Gone?", and Shawn Colvin, "Sunny Came Home"). The awards will be broadcast Wed., Feb. 25th (I think), and they usually include live musical performances by some of the nominees (hopefully Jewel!!!), many of which are pretty good/"qualify as classics". (More info can be found at http://www.grammy.org if you're interested). I think that it's great that Jewel was nominated for this award, & I hope she wins (obviously), even though I like the other four artists & the songs for which they were nominated. Still, it's somewhat of a surprise to me that she was nominated only for this and not also in such other categories as "Record Of The Year" and/or "Song Of The Year", especially for YWMFM. Granted, each of those two categories had five good songs that were nominated (IMHO three Very good songs, two OK ones w/o naming names). OK, even considering that, when you look at "Record Of The Year", which goes to "the artist and the producer of a song that was released as a radio single"...I mean, how could you overlook YWMFM?? That song ABSOLUTELY DOMINATED every single singles chart all year long (if you remember last spring when it simply REFUSED TO LEAVE the charts), *and*, if you listen to radio stations all over the dial, like those of us w/o tape players in our cars do:), well, YWMFM could be heard on Adult Contemporary/Easy Listening stations through Pop/Top 40 stations through Alternative, i.e. __all-over-the spectrum__. A non-nomination which is definitely an omission, in my opinion. Also, and even moreso--how could you overlook that for "Song Of The Year", for "the songwriter(s) who wrote the song"? Jewel and Steve's song is shown to be, by its two different versions (POY one & Single one), a goos __song__ no matter who sings it or how its produced. Jewel & Steve deserve recognition for that. Pop songs as a genre occasionally get "officially pronounced dead" insofar as "everything that can be done has mostly been done"...so don't they deserve recognition for creating this so "simple" (in the truly best sense) song that yet is so good?!?!?!?!?! Yeah, yeah, I know, Jewel gets a lot of criticism from critics who accuse her of writing "silly love songs". But someone said the same thing about Paul McCartney, too, huh? :) [Mostly apply everything above about FG as well, esp. how it sounds good as a piano song *or* as a guitar song--it's a good *song*]. Oh, well, enough for now. Congrats to Jewel and to all the other Alterna-Folk artists who were nominated this morning for Grammies. Maybe they didn't want to put too much of Lilith Fair's music up for nominations for fear of getting hit with a copyright lawsuit & they had to draw the line somewhere :) Take care:) Greg ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Jan 1998 16:04:40 EST From: Brucbeary Subject: setlists Is there anyplace on the net to look up Jewel setlists? Also, I am am going to america in a couple of months and I wondered what the music stores are like. Am I likely to get rare Jewel stuff from the big music stores or do I have to go to smaller specialist stores. My name is Chris, I'm a rock musician in Michigan who has been on the list for a couple of weeks. I got Web TV for Christmas, and I immediately went for the music links... found this list, and I think it's great! Jewel's music is awesome, and it's great to be able to network with others who feel the same way. Anyways, if Jewel plays any dates in Southern Lower Michigan this summer, I'd be glad to do my part to help host a gathering of sorts...it would be great to meet some of y'all. So that's my story--looking forward to reading yours. Chris ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V3 #14 **************************
