From day one of listening to her music and finding out who this very attractive(C'Mon you guys out there, am I right? =) woman is, I fell in ove how melodic her music is... Still awaiting that day(s) to meet her in person(let alone playing on stage for 2 hours)(ok, 10 minutes on stage) I guess I have to have a little faith in what people that have met her before have said. She a great person & above all...shes human. A screw up like the rest of us. I'll be getting off my soap box now, thank you for listening. Real quick comment about anyone who wants to complain about Jewel's New Year's Eve show. What did you expect? It's New Year's Eve. Quiet, serene crowds just don't show up at bars on New Year's Eve. Whoever thought it was a good idea for her to do a New Year's Eve show was a moron. Phish yes, Blues Traveler yes, pretty much any up tempo party band with a lot of fast songs where the crowd participation means moshing and/or crowd surfing, yes. Jewel-no. I can't believe any of you are surprised that there was a horrible crowd. I mean come on, think folks, it is unrealistic and downright gullible to expect anything less considering it is New Year's Eve. Hi All.. It's been a while since I've posted, but this subject came up, and it's one that I *definitely* have thoughts on. Here in the UK, Jewel really doesn't have that many fans. The fact that YWMFM charted here was merely due to a large overdose of publicity, and a very cheaply priced CD. If it had made a significant impression on the chart (top 10) it would have had to sell considerably more than it did. However, from what I can tell, throughout the tour here, Jewel treated the few UK fans that attended her shows badly (in terms of rudeness), and in my experience, decided to shoulder charge past less than 15 fans with her security gorillas rather than stop for two minutes and quickly sign things. This was indoors, it wasn't late at night, and she had plenty of security. She also left all the gifts that were given to her on the stage. They were later disposed of. (I saw a guy come out of the building about 1 1/2 hours later and throw them in the bin outside) Now maybe in the US, where she gets mobbed by 50+ fans after a concert, and has a huge fan base, she can afford to do this. But over here, with such a minute fan base, she needed to to take the time, and make the effort to give a good impression. IMHO she did anything but on the night I saw her. She certainly went down a great deal in my esteem. I wouldn't mind, but not all stars (even of her scale) act in this way. Tori Amos for example, was known to spend over an hour signing material for fans *outside* on the Dew Drop Inn tour. There's a difference between being busy, or being rightfully angry or off hand, and being simply arrogant towards fans. Just my thoughts. Cheers Mike Mike Gray - michael@pta15.u-net.com http://www.pta15.u-net.com/mike/index.html ^ Now including Celine Dion, Peach, Gloria Estefan, Tori Amos, Erasure... I don't *do* subliminal messages. Let's see. Before I go into your topic, I would = like to introduce myself. I'm an angel from Malaysia. I never see Jewel = live on the stage as she never come here before. What you guys saying, = I'm not sure whether it is true or not. So let's go for the first topic, = mean. Speaking about mean, maybe you should give her another chance and = see whether she is really mean. About the backstage incident, maybe her = mood wasn't good or maybe she is really tired or maybe something else = bothering her. There is too many probabilities. If, she is really mean = or prima donna, still, as a fan of her, we should support and give her a = chance to change or something. After all the paths or routes she went = through, it is sometimes hard to tell their behavior. As an example, = let's assume that you're a good and wise man. If not it would be really cool if someone could scan some J-cards for some of the more popular tapes and email em to me. We have become to self involved in weather Jewel is mean or what color her eyes are or what sexual preference she has. At one time we deserved the titles "Everyday Angels," but not now. We have become to selfish thinking, that what kind of people are we to put someone on a pedistool if they are mean, even if they are touring around the world day after day, getting tired and homesick. But we think what kind of people are we that we idolize her? What does that make us? We are human, and so is Jewel. She has a talent that some of us lack, so we envy that and enjoy that. She is a genious and knows how to use her talent, but remember that all genious' are not perfect because they are human. WE have to stop bickering. That is the message of this letter. So to answer your question, Reddog, I dont know why we are called Angels because we dont deserve it. I got back from Las Vegas yesterday (Friday) and spent all day recovering! That is one crazy place on New Year's Eve! My boyfriend and I left Albuquerque at 6:00 a.m. and got to Vegas at 7 a.m.- so we were tired and spent all morning asleep at the hotel. I called Mary and they were going to lunch, but I wasn't really awake yet so passed on lunch and we all decided to meet at the Hard Rock around 3:30 to try to get into Jewel's sound check (unsuccessfully I might add!). So my boyfriend and I ate lunch at the Hard Rock Cafe and spent the time discussing what we would say if we ever met Jewel. I really should have paid more attention to this discussion. (Hint, Hint) We walked over to the hotel after lunch, did some gambling, and decided to walk around inside the hotel part and look at the collections on the walls of famous rock stars. We walked all the way down to the Fitness Room, and sitting on a mat was a beautiful blond girl. We both froze, realizing this was Jewel! She was doing some sort of stretching or leg lifts. We didn't think we should go in, but I felt a little embarrassed staring at her outside the glass. As I'm standing there debating what to do, she gets up, puts on some really cool purple velvet sweats and a hat, and walks out of the Fitness Room. I am still in shock, so my boyfriend KICKED ME towards her! Now of course I had to say something- so I said hi and told her I was going to her show that night. Her response was rather amusing- (something like) "Tell everyone to shut up for me!". I think I said something after this, but I can't be sure. She then walked off with her VERY LARGE AND SCARY bodyguard. As she walked towards the elevators (up to her suite I'm sure) NO ONE else recognized her. She probably passed by about 25 people. I'm glad though, she probably didn't want all the attention. Oh, I didn't mention that I had a camera in my hand throughout the entire conversation and forgot about it. However, according to Tegan, she doesn't like her picture taken in that kind of situation, so I guess I'm glad I didn't offend her. ANYWAY, I really should have listened to my boyfriend earlier about what to say if I ever met her! Regardless, my entire year has been made. Now, about the show. I had an awesome time no matter what the circumstances around me. Yes, people were drunk and obnoxious. Yes, people simply bought the tickets because it was the show to be at, even if they didn't appreciate Jewel. Lots of people around us left early, or left every 10 minutes to get another drink. And we were in the 4th row! (What were they thinking!) But no matter what was going on, I had a permanent smile on my face for the chance to be in the 4th row watching my favorite performer sing. ON THE OTHER HAND, I felt bad for Jewel. She didn't seem to be having a good time. Like Mr. BB said, this was not her crowd. Some drunk guy kept yelling things like "Will you have my baby!" and something about her boobs. She responded by saying something like "I don't mind having you thrown out and refunding your money." Wahoooooo! Go Jewel!!!! But she handled herself well for the situation. She talked a little, telling the stories we all know by now about each song. Did anyone mention Foolish Games? She had the drummer (I think) from the Rugburns come out and do the piano. He must have been LOADED because he really butchered the song! She was beautifully singing, and he was missing notes and screwing up the tempo. So finally she turns around and motions for him to stop, but he's not looking. So she says through the mike, "Stop". He was probably embarrassed by this, but who cares? He totally ruined her song. So she sang the rest without any musical instruments- which was beautiful by the way. Okay, I just realized how long this was getting. It was a pleasure meeting the other EDA's in Vegas! I hope everyone has a wonderful New Year. Something I will be thinking about this year, thanks to Jewel, is finding your dreams and following them. Too often we settle for what others think we should do with our lives, or settle for an easy path. I have done both of these as I begin a career in Electrical Engineering. This year will be a good time to discover and reconsider my dreams and follow through with them. I hope you all do the same! Take care!
