Is this more convenient for everybody? Also, I'd like to start a list of those attending. If you will be or think you will be, please e-mail me privately and tell me so. >> Hi everyone. I am a fairly new EDA & am hoping I can afford to make it to the gathering in San Diego on the 3rd. I will have to fly out by myself from Phoenix & will be driving back with a friend who will be visiting relatives in CA for Christmas anyway. I was just wondering if anyone else from Phoenix will be attending. That way maybe we could fly out on the same flight? Just an idea. I hate not knowing anoyone. If not, I guess I'll just bring a book & tough it =). Also, I am looking forward to seeing some EDA's perform, I'd kinda like to but the song I know best is Foolish Games & someone else is probably already singing it. Is there going to be a set list in advance? Hope to see everyone there! ATTN San Diego area EDA's Hello EDA's, I was just wondering if any San Diego area EDA's would be willing to hang out with me around some time in April. My ship will be pulling into port there, and I don't know the area very well, but I am looking forward to seeing Jewel's "adopted" hometown and all of the sights there. I am sure I would enjoy it much more if I had some one who knew the area to hang out with me. I don't need a place to stay or anything (although it would be nice, since the bunks on submarines are not exactly the most comfortable things). So if anybody is interested in hanging out, let me know. I'd even be willing to buy a MickyD's meal in exchange for the Tour Guide services! ;) Thanks, Navy Jay. laser@cchono.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 Dec 1997 17:55:15 -0500 From: "Matt Adler" Subject: Foolish Games # 2 video of 1997 That's right, Jewel's "Foolish Games" Video is the 2nd best video of 1997. The Wallflower's "One Headlight" got the # 1 spot. This will be airing on VH1 til the New Year. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 Dec 1997 20:50:58 -0500 From: Mike Connell Subject: Jewel article in the newest People magazine Howdy y'all :) Here's the full text of the small one-page article about Jewel in People magazine's "The 25 Most Intriguing People Of The Year" issue: ***** Jewel: Folk music gets a '90s poster girl Even after the gem of a year she has had, the Jewel in the crowd of female musicians making a yin din on last summer's Lilith Fair caravan claims to remain unpolished. "I'm not hip, I'm not produced, I'm not slick," says Jewel Kilcher, 23. "I don't have a big image thing." Spoken like a true neofolkie even as sales of her multi-platinum debut album, Pieces Of You, bring in very heavy metal at the cash register. Recorded three years after the Homer, Alaska, native wrote them at age 16, the collection of achingly earnest tunes "has tons of mistakes in it," concedes its' creator. Still, her audiences are filled with soulful teens who can commiserate with a hotter-than-average hippie-chick singing songs that she says are about "trying to figure out 'Where do I fit in in the world?' " The answer to that is, almost everywhere. In October she signed a $2 million contract with HarperCollins for two books, a poetry and prose collection and a scrapbook - both due next year. She has also made a deal to star in her first film, as the love interest of two men in Ang (The Ice Storm) Lee's $35 million Civil War epic, To Live On. "Jewel is the perfect mixture of down-to-earth and ethereal," says Lee. Her words prove him right: "I'm really looking forward to having my ass kicked by a new challenge. For me, singing and songwriting utilize only one part of a very creative body. ***** There was also a small blub next to a photo of Jewel that said: Amid more than three years of touring, Jewel found last summer's Lilith Fair a welcome relief: "Usually you're so lonely on the road, like a little astronaut. We had a real sense of community. None of us wanted to leave." The Internet is a vast wasteland of people's opinions and uncritical yack and whining and complaining--mainly just uncritical yak. It's theoretically an interesting tool. In practice it's nearly pointless unless you are actually a programmer or a scientist, and even that is becoming questionable at this point." --David Thomas, Pere Ubu ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #965 ***************************
