Personally I think it's extremely extremely unlikely that the game will ever be stumped, and I don't think you need six degrees. (Okay, so I have to admit that I don't really know the rules in detail, I only learn about the game from Mad About You :) The movie "Six degrees of separation" is also about this idea by the way. (that we are all connected to each other) so suppose you know twenty people (or, twenty people cast of a movie), each of them know twenty more people (in their next mutually exclusive movies for the cast) ... and so on, in six degrees there are 20 + 400 + 8,000 + 160,000 + 3,200,000 + 64,000,000 = 67,368,420 people ... there are about 90,000 in the screen actors' guild. so in theory it can be done in four degrees. Can Jewel (yes! now I can change it to SJC :) be linked to Kevin in four degrees? you bet! Jewel will star with Matt Damon in "to live on" who stars with Robin Williams in "good will hunting" who stars with Robert De Niro in "awakenings" who stars with Kevin Bacon in "sleepers" why is it called Kevin Bacon's game anyways? did he bring it up or something? I heard that some people call it the syphil ... eh, the flu game :) (this wasn't a remark on the actors/actresses only by the way) I hope I didn't ruin the game for anyone ... The people making money in this situation love this to happen, because idealization of this person becomes a quasi-religious icon and that kind of importance is the same kind that creates martyrs out of monsters. Not at all that I am implying that Jewel is any type of monster, quite the opposite. But I am trying to create an understanding of the influences and thinking that lead down unrealistic thoughts. That she is not perfect makes no impact on the messages in her music or the possibility of raw intimacy in your emotions. They are still as vital and possible. In fact, by distancing them from her person, their idealisms and potentials are uninhibited. People are imperfect as a rule, but idealisms are not. If we were to ask Jewel, I know, if sane, she would have to agree, she couldn't base her beliefs on who she is, and neither should we. We all make mistakes in our lives, but the past isn't so important, we don't forget it because then we would make our mistakes over again, but what is important is what we do now, today and everyday. That we are living it well and for the good of all the people that we come across. Searching for a peace and health throughout our hearts and lives. It's not a religion, it's a way of life. That is what I believe being an Everyday Angel is about. I hope I am not alone in this, as it has given me the passion and joy that I had yearned for as a child. I've listened to Jewel since she first appeared on TV with her videos, and have loved her ever since. Rare is it that any musical artist or screen actor grabs my attention so much that I actually join mailing lists or so on, but with Jewel, an exception had to be made. I do have a few questions, though, and am sure more will arise as time passes, and I do hope someone out there will be gracious enough to answer them for me. For one, I noticed everyone seems to have an angel name, am I supposed to pick one for myself? And how do I send a reply to one person so that everyone else can read it too? If someone could just fill me in on this and any other basics I should know I would be deeply grateful. I hope to hear from you guys shortly. Keep the faith and God bless. ************************************************************* Jonathan "Jackal" Rodgers "A good brain ain't diddly if jackal@groton.k12.ct.us you don't have the facts." -Ani DiFranco ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Dec 1997 17:14:53 EST From: HRENB Subject: JC: Show Review- 12/17/98 El Rey Theater w/ Bob Dylan Ahh, where to start... will try to be brief- lol- but I doubt it will be....sooo...I was having a bad day overall, my friend backed out, so I went by myself to the El Rey Theater (more like a bar), in L.A., got a ticket from a scalper for waaaaayyyy too much. Jewel came out at about 8:00, opening for Bob Dylan. Some jerk yells out "Like a rolling stone" (Bob Dylan song), so Jewel flips him the bird, and the crowd was like woe, tough chick here. So she starts playing "Don't", and there are sound problems throughout, loose cord, bad speakers, something. So she stops mid song and is like this is ridiculous, can someone fix the sound. So right away theres a bad vibe to her whole set. The crowd itself was not generally nice, half hippie/ yuppies (huppies?) about 50 toking up in their shirt and tie, and half 19 year old stoner deadheads looking for Dylan to be their new father figure since Jerry Garcia's gone, man. So the Jewel contingent was small. After like 5 minutes of messing with the cords, Jewel switched guitars and lots of people were still making rude comments and stuff, so I yell out "EDA's" "We love you" and I dunno if she heard or not, but a bunch of peopled clapped and were like "yeah!". Anyways, she seemed a bit pissed at both the crowd and the set up (people were talking way too much) and threw in her customary "shut up" to some unrulys. She finally won the crowd over with her NY model story, and rocking versions of WWSYS, Love Me Just Leave Me Alone and Chime Bells, but they didn't appreciate the mellow tunes. There was no encore. Jewel put on a brave face and did a great professional effort in spite of the distractions, but her smiles were forced, none of the pure joy she showed playing at Hospitality Point a few months back. She had a weary look in her eyes and I hope she takes a bit of rest and I hope her tough work schedule isnt making her jaded. She is, after all, still a pretty young girl. I give her 8 out of 10 for this night. Setlist- Don't Sometimes it be That Way Satellite Stranger from the East (NY model story- a bit longer version and funnier) Pieces of You Who Will Save Your Soul (Wailed at the end, like Janis) Love Me Just Leave Me Alone (Rocked) Last Dance Rodeo Deep Water Chime Bells No Amen, Angel Standing By, or Painters- My third show and I still haven't heard Painters! Bob Dylans set was pretty cool. Near the end he mumbled How bout Jewel? Man, some yodeling! but it sounded like "Hew boo Jew? Mang sough yo wee? I cannot understand that dude! The theater was pretty cool, and only held 900 people so at least I was able to get to about 7 people back from the stage. P.S. I had on yellow tinted glasses (recent eye surgery, not Hollywood posing), and if the girl standing next to me by any chance is an EDA (About 5'10" with a tiny white band aid on your nose) you are nothin less than beautiful and if single, drop me an email - lol - So I'm a bit bummed overall, todays pouring rain and Chris Farley passed away, so say a prayer for him. Hey Again Angels-- How's it going? Pretty good here... well okay, I broke my wrist/hand Saturday due to a REALLY dumb car accident, if you could even call it that. Ughh, I was stopped at a stop light and all of a sudden the airbags popped out for NO reason whatsoever. For those of you with new Toyota Camry's... beware! Anyways. So I was shopping for some quick candy holiday gifts for my friends at school last night, and I heard what I recognized as a really familiar song. I listened a bit more closely and it was Jewel's Who Will Save Your Soul... BUT wait, it wasn't the normal version. I guess some musician arranged it without words and it kinda sounded like the MIDI version that many of us have. Anyone know if you can buy that version or what the story is behind it? Anyone even heard of it yet? About the Newbie program-- Okey, so I was pretty new a few months ago.. and I joined during the limited version or whatever when the list was undergoing changes... and I know that I was TOTALLY lost when I first got here. So within the past week, I've kinda taken it upon myself to welcome newbies who post on the list stating that they're fairly new. Y'know... kinda to make them feel more welcome.
