This isn't really news just an interesting phone conversation I had last night. Here goes: Well this guy called up asking for my mom. I took down his name and number and noticed it was long distance. So being my inquisitive self I asked where he was calling from. It was San Diego. I was just like oh really?!?! I hear the music scene there is pretty good. Then he said yeah you know that folksinger Jewel. Ummmmmmm YEAH!!!!! Well she comes in the health food store I work in all the time. I was about to scream but of course I kept my cool. I really like her!!! I said. Okay so that was my exciting evening. I just have one more thing, HOW TALL IS JEWEL? Anyone know? Another more modern favorite is Rickie Lee Jones. She's into Leo Kottke & Lyle Lovett to name a few guys, too. I never asked her, but I think it's obvious her favorite songwriter is Steve Poltz. For a specific current answer, I know both Jewel & BiBi really love Rickie Lee Jones' most recent album "Ghostyhead". Hope that helps a bit, Jeff . To get a complete listing of who is on a certain list at smoe.org (with a totals count at the end) all you have to do is ask majordomo@smoe.org To find who is on the main Jewel list (jewel), send the two-line command: who jewel end to majordomo@smoe.org and you'll get a reply with the listing in a short while. Sending a similar two-line command: who jewel-digest end gets you a listing of who's on jewel-digest, likewise sending: who jewel-news end gets you who's on jewel-news :) The present totals are: 738 jewel 867 jewel-digest 1218 jewel-news A lot more info can be found by using majordomo@smoe.org. Such as you *might* be able to find the email address of a list member if you cannot remember it. (Using their name or part of their email address is necessary, or just get a complete list as shown above and scour the listing you get) For info on how to find a list members' email address, plus a few more majordomo tricks you can visit my "Majordomo School" at: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/majordomo.htm More info on the other versions of the Jewel list can be obtained by either visiting this site: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/threever.htm or by sending an email to eda-info@smoe.org to get an automatic reply explaining about the three versions. Well, help is at hand for fans of introspective, psyche-searching female angst, as the 23-year-old singer-songwriter is reportedly close to signing a $2 million book publishing deal with HarperCollins for a volume of poetry and a "scrapbook" of her childhood. Jewel's poetry should hit the shops in the spring, with the scrapbook to coincide with her second LP in the autumn. MOJO January 1998 The Best Thing I've Heard All Year 50 STARS OF SOUND PICK THE THINGS THAT HAVE CHEERED THEIR EARS Jewel EVERY FACET POLISHED Best thing? Hmmmm. A seemingly impossible task. Because the best things I've heard this year have to be the best things I've heard ever. Let It Be by The Replacements - great writing, lots of attitude. But the first Rickie Lee Jones album had a great, innovative, jazz-inflected vibe. But then Yma Sumac is an all-time classic - but a bit tiresome upon repetition. Strike that. At a loss to decide, I thought what album I've been listening to longest, that I've never tired of. The answer: Ella Fitzgerald, The Cole Porter Songbook. Best writing, best singing. escape January 1998 - INTERNET & GAMES FOR MEN Look Who's Stalking Fancy rubbing shoulders with the paparazzi and invading a celebrity's privacy? We show how you can get online and in their faces. [The article is comparing the pros and cons of celebrity Internet Mailing Lists...] US-based Alan Roukey, a subscriber to the mailing lists of Alanis Morissette (www.cantnot.org/amfl/) and up-and-coming singer Jewel (www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/), is adamant that the advantages of signing up far outweigh the amount of trash that's posted: "If Alanis is going to be doing something big, like the Tibet Freedom Concert, we know in advance. I know tons of Jewel's activities before they happen as well. I usually get reports from Europeans about her concerts before MTV even announces them here in the States. Through the list, I've heard about up-and-coming stars touring in my area and have attended some of these gatherings." His faith in the mailing lists seems justified - a sample snip from Jewel's mailing list reveals a comprehensive guide to her official functions: the UNICEF benefit in New York, the New Year's Eve gig at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas, and even her appearance on our very own National Lottery show coupled with UK concert dates. But without an official bod to monitor info being dished out to over-eager fans, there's always the chance that some of the stuff posted will be... well, utter bollocks. "Every piece of info is hotly argued," explains Alan. "Sometimes it seems there are a lot of liars online. It can seem like disinformation is being deliberately posted. And the most frustrating thing is that the posts never reveal their sources. They just spout out 'I heard that...' kind of messages." Each of these three articles has a colour picture of Jewel. I've scanned them (not very well) and put them on my web page. And finally FACES IN POP. This a US pull-out pin-up magazine, mainly concentrating on Hanson. But for the third month running there is a Jewel pin-up. This is the January 98 issue. The picture is from the Grammies, it's similar to the November 97 picture but is more of a close-up of Jewel's face. Rogers" Subject: new to list Hello EDAs! I subscribed to the list a couple weeks ago, and I really like the conversations that I've read. I really enjoy Jewek's music; you don't hear her type of music ("Folk Rock") anymore. She is a very creative poet and songwriter. I just have the Pieces of You album. It's really good! My favorite songs (other than the obvious ones) are Pieces of You, Little Sister, Adrian, and Angel Standing By. I really like Adrian, but what confuses me is the first and last verses. I don't know them perfectly, but they seem very simillar. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, I think the storyline is about a man who is in a coma due to a canoe accident. At the end of the song, does he come out of th ecoma the same summer or the next summer? I can't quite figure it out. I think the song, Pieces of You, is a great song. It's telling you that (again, someone correct me if I'm wrong) everyone should be treated equally, no matter their, age, skin color, sex, religion, or creed. I can relate to this song in a way. I have Cerebral Palsy (CP), I know how it feels to be "different." Someone asked for a site that had lyrics to songs not on POY. You'll find them at Jewel's official web site. Once you're there, click on "Lynx", then click on "the Jeewel Shrine." (I believe that's the title. I have it bookmarked, so I don't remember!) One last question: Does anyone on this list live in Maine? Just curious. HAPPY HOLIDAYS! Thanks for reading, Mark (The Thoughtful Angel) I hope I'm not stealing anyone's title! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Dec 1997 23:03:04 -0500 (EST) From: the emperor of smurfs Subject: NJC: Re: ???? jewel's musical taste ????
