I think she did so on the Charlie Rose show. But, I'm thinking that she does this to simplify the interview and not spend too much time on trivial data. >> This happens. Billy Joel is from my town, which is called Hicksville. He graduated from Hicksville High School in 1992 with an honorary diploma after dropping out in the 60's. Hicksville is on Long Island, in the town of Oyster Bay. He came to my school for a question and answer thingee and I asked him why he never mentions Hicksville in any of his songs or anywhere else. He said what I expected. Being from a town called Hicksville, you are bound to hear, "is it a hick town?" , "do ya'll have cows?" , and "did your brother sleep with your mom?" when people aren't familiar with Long Island. It gets really annoying. Billy Joel said that he never mentions Hicksville because it just wastes time having to explain over and over again why the name of the town is Hicksville and having to hear the same jokes over and over again. So he says either Long Island or Oyster Bay. So, if Jewel had to explain every time that she was born in some (probable) small town in Utah, what would the majority of the people think? Hick. It wastes a lot of time having to explain the same thing over and over again. This line has nothing to do with the narrator or he man's sleeping around. At all. How did someone read that in there? It's about the female narrator and how she adored waking up next to this person. He was brilliant in the morning, as opposed to sluggish and cranky, like most people. They would sit having breakfast and he impressed her with intellectually stimulating conversation while he smoked cigarettes and they drank coffee and pent the morning together. If anything, this line is a compliment to the guy, although she may later realize that he is imperfect, and too cool in his own mind, there are still many things about him that she remembers very fondly. I mean, I don't expect Jewel to have absolute virginity but I don't wish that she was potrayed as this tramp sleeping around which is what my roommates were saying. I like the song better with the full second verse, but, frankly, I doubt my opinion is going to stand very well against that of the actual author. ;) >But anyway, I have a question for you now: Why in your letter did you write >Jewel's name in quotation marks? Just wondering. My first thought was, "huh?" My second was, "because I meant to convey that while the person physically singing the song is Jewel, the 'voice' of the song, *assuming* the song isn't strictly autobiographical, isn't necessarily Jewel's own." (And if the song *is* autobiography, which I don't seem to recall it being, then I withdraw the quotes and apologize for the confusion.) My third was, "oh, geez, I hope nobody thought that I was trying to somehow mock Jewel by using quotation marks around her name, a la Government 'Intelligence' or some other such thing." Yeah. ;) Peace, Josh |-- --- ----- -|- ----- --. Do you think > that means Jewel was sleeping around or is she just talking about how her > boyfriend has changed and has been cruel to her? In the past, Jewel has often stated that "Nikos" (now known as "Brother") was the only song she has written that could be considered autobiographical. Some newer song she's performing now may also be somewhat autobiographical (I have NO idea, as there's more than a few I've yet to hear), but Foolish Games is certainly not one of them. So, considering it's not autobigraphical, any line(s) from Foolish Games are not *about* Jewel and thus don't reflect her life (she wrote the darn thing at 16 anyway, if I remember correctly) You can tell your roommates that :) Mike :) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Dec 1997 19:30:58 EST From: MikeDreams Subject: Foolish Games (live guitar version) CHORDS Foolish Games (live guitar version) by Jewel Transcribed by Mike Carmona (MikeDreams@aol.com) Foolish Games (live - guitar version) Intro: 9th fret 5th & 4th string Intro: pick 6,5,3,2,3,5 Verse pick: 6,5,4,3,4,5 x2 3rd fret, 5th string pick: 5,4,3,2,3,4,5 x2 2nd fret, 5th string pick: 5,4,3,2,3,4,5 x2 D pick: 4,3,2,1,2,3,4 x2 Chorus: Am+5: 003210 pick 4321234 x2 (well incase you...) One note: "Sleeping around" usually is taken as meant to be sleeping with other people, not just one person. Just because someone sleeps with someone doesn't mean they are "sleeping around." In any case, I don't see why everyone is assuming that every song Jewel writes must be about her to the fullest extent. She sings about feeling.. and portrays emotions well.. not necessarily her own experience.
