(I hope this formats OK on other email systems.) I just want to thoroughly update you & share my excitement about the soon to be FREELY distributed "Future Folklore" Volume 3. The master is finished & I LOVE IT! The music is all incredible & the tape flows real nice & captures the atmosphere during the EDAF Thanksgiving gigs pretty well. You'll be happy to know that ALL the artists authorized material for this, so Jewel, Cindy Lee Berryhill, Joy Eden Harrison, Gregory Page, Elizabeth Hummel, Tara MacLean, Lisa Sanders & Mary Dolan are all featured on the tape. Anyone interested in Jewel's music will certainly welcome a perfect recording of "Jessica" & (the rare operatic treat) of "Lasciatemi Morrire". But it's really the other artists that I think will amaze many of you. Jewel came out of an incredibly talented "scene" in San Diego, which is very much alive & well! Jewel & these other musicians & songwriters (with the exception of Tara) are all intertwined & connected. I hope you take the opportunity to follow the forthcoming instructions & get this FREE tape when it's being treed in excellent quality. Any Jewel fan who doesn't bother is truly missing the boat! I hope to have an administrator in place in the next few weeks (and have the finished j-cards). Then we'll get this free distribution off the ground. As always, the tape will be available by sending your blank cassette & return postage & mailer to the person you'll be assigned to, by the administrator. ***IMPORTANT!! PLEASE WAIT UNTIL INSTRUCTIONS ARE POSTED IN EARLY JANUARY BEFORE EMAILING ME TO REQUEST THIS TAPE!! What follows are my notes about "FF3", including official finished tracklistings, credits, thank you's, & technical information, etc. I think it will answer any questions about the tape you may have. Read on & I'll update you on "tree progress" ASAP. ******************************************* "Future Folklore Volume 3- NOTES FROM MrBB When I put together "Future Folklore" Volumes 1 & 2, I concentrated on fairly complete performances by Steve Poltz, Cindy Lee Berryhill & Elizabeth Hummel (taken from two EDA events that were documented back in April of 97) For Volume 3, I've selected highlights from both evenings at Java Joe's during the EDAF Thanksgiving Weekend of 11/28 & 29/97. There's really a great diversity to the music on this compilation. Powerful & emotionally charged songs from Lisa Sanders, Mary Dolan & Tara MacLean. Updated traditional approaches from Elizabeth Hummel on dulcimer. Joy Eden Harrison swingin' & singin' the blues. The sentimentally seasoned songwriting of Gregory Page. Jewel belting out Monteverdi accappella for some culture. And finally, my personal favorite, Cindy Lee Berryhill & her Garage Orchestra taking us to "Pop Heaven", when not leading us to another planet altogether! I think you'll find all of these performances to be enjoyable at the least & mind blowing at the most. For those of you who enjoyed Cindy Lee & Elizabeth on FF1 & 2, this material is very different than those performances. Elizabeth rocks when playing dulcimer! And Cindy Lee...... simply awesome! On previous FF tapes you heard a unique folksinger, but here those songs have transformed into strangely beautiful pop-symphonies that are totally infectious! Although diverse, there's a continuity to listening to these artists together. There's strong friendships between them all & a never ending support of each other that has impressed me from the minute I was taken in by this San Diego scene. It's similar support & friendships that are developing & spreading around the planet by the EDAs, I think. Both sides of the tape end with the humor (& looseness) that these events so often inspire. There's a special feeling in the room during these performances that I can't describe accurately. I have tried to capture it on the recordings & think I've succeeded to a certain extent. By suspending very high quality microphones out of the loft above the stage, I was able to blend the "room ambience" into a soundboard direct stereo mix which fed directly into the decks. This enables the listener to enjoy the clear definition of vocals & guitars that a direct soundboard feed provides while still having the ambience & dynamics that only a room recording done with excellent microphones can provide. I mixed these sources direct to digital while it happened & after analysing it, I felt no post-production or EQing was needed at all. It really sounds that good! I hope you all enjoy the recordings on "Future Folklore" Volume 3. It was an unforgettable week of good friends, hilarious parties, stimulating conversation & great music! What else is there, anyway? Future Folklore Volume 3 is dedicated IN LOVING MEMORY OF KENDRICK For "Future Folklore Volume 3, very special thank goes to: Neil Sturtevant for his generous help with recording gear in SD. Wendy & Joe at JJs for accommodating the EDAs & my "special needs". The Morales Family for planning & hosting these events. John Walker for being our friend & chauffer extraordinaire. The EDAs who made these events unforgettable. The musicians for inspiring performances. AmyJo for putting up with my continued insanity. Lenedra & Jewel, Cindy Lee & Paul and Elizabeth (they know why). All recordings mixed & mastered live direct to 2 track digital by MrBB. All of the artists represented here have authorized the use of their recordings for this nonprofit project. Recorded Friday November 28th & Saturday November 29th, 1997 at "The EDAF Thanksgiving Concerts", Java Joe's, Ocean Beach, CA "Future Folklore" Volume 3 SIDE A: "Welcome To Java Joe's" - Wendy "Truly Divine" - Lisa Sanders & Mary Dolan "Where Melancholy Goes" - Mary Dolan "Rainbow" - Lisa Sanders & Mary Dolan "Let Her Feel The Rain" - Tara MacLean "Silence" - Tara Maclean "Jessica" - Jewel "Lasciatemi Morrire" - Jewel "Love Lies Broken" - Elizabeth Hummel "Are We Gonna Get Naked?" - Elizabeth Hummel "Goodwill Store" - Elizabeth Hummel w/Jewel & Gregory Page SIDE B: "White Christmas" - Gregory Page "Walking In The Park" - Gregory Page "Great Mystery" - Gregory Page "Where Have You Gone Jimmy Dean" - Joy Eden Harrison "Angels Watching Over Me" - Joy Eden Harrison "Aquamarine" - Cindy Lee Berryhill & Garage Orchestra "UFO Suite" - Cindy Lee Berryhill & Garage Orchestra "God Bless The Living Room Tour" - Cindy Lee Berryhill ********************************************** Final note to EDAs: Many of the goals I had with previous volumes of "Future Folklore" have already been realized, including "The Living Room Tour" & the weekend documented here. I hope this series will continue to inspire many more music related events in the future! FF3 will bring back great memories for those who experienced these shows & I hope it helps to share the experience with those unable to attend. A high quality recording of "Jessica" is probably the most common "dream request" from Jewel tape collectors. This one will certainly fill that need real well! Ah.......& finally, Cindy Lee Berryhill & Garage Orchestra. Truly one of the most wonderful things I've ever listened to! Everyone during this week was great, but Cindy Lee is from another planet altogether! Fortunately for me, so am I. - MrBB *********************************** New to the Jewel mailing list? Jeff Aafedt, sadly, is gone from the group but drums will be played by John Castro's brother. The show will mark the "reunion" of the original 'Burns with Rob Driscoll and Gregory Page making a special appearance -- along with other guests like Elizabeth Hummel. The show starts at midnight so take a long nap before you get there. Lisa Sanders w/Mary Dolan will be performing after the group -- so add a few hours to that nap so you can stick around for Lisa who's amazing. The show is sure to sell out (if it hasn't already) -- especially when there might be other "special" surprise guests -- so buy your tickets early. If you're one that has never experienced The Rugburns live then this is a must-see show (I feel they perform better at Belly Up Tavern than any other venue.) The show will be a good warm-up gig for the big New Year's hoopla in Vegas. The Belly Up Tavern is a 21+ club. See some of you there. Hi, I have a question about Foolish Games in the particular verse where it states, " You were always brillant in the morning, smoking your cigarettes and talking over coffee..." My roommates insisted that meant she was sleeping around. Do you think that means Jewel was sleeping around or is she just talking about how her boyfriend has changed and has been cruel to her? If someone could respond to this, that would be great! Anyone who has ever tried to watch a PAL tape on an NTSC television, or vice versa, knows very well that these two formats are *not* compatible. ;) (btw: I can't remember what PAL and NTSC stand for, and furthermore, I'm not entirely positive that I've got the letters in NTSC in the correct order. Let's keep the ball rolling and get "Angel Standing By" played across the country. If everyone calls the radio stations in their area, it'll happen for sure. Jewel herself has said, on occasion, that she was born in Alaska. I think she did so on the Charlie Rose show. But, I'm thinking that she does this to simplify the interview and not spend too much time on trivial data. That's right- it's gone. All gone. Completely. It wasn't working anymore. I had over a hundred newbies and maybe 5 people looking to adopt. I guess it has to do with the change of dynamics on this list- I think that very few people who were on the list in it's early stages are still on now. I know I've switched to news-only. There isn't that small- group love anymore, so there's no need for AAN to try to maintain it. I guess it was inevitable. I'd like to apologize to the newbies who never got a parent. I'd also like to thank the total of 30 or so listmembers who became adoptive parents throughout the life of the program ( about 1 year and 4 months ). I'm sorry this didn't help the way I thought it would. I guess things just got to big and chaotic. Have a nice day, everyone. Do you think >that means Jewel was sleeping around or is she just talking about how her >boyfriend has changed and has been cruel to her? Personally, I've always seen that line as describing the dark-eyed, careless haired subject of the song as the sort of intelligent, poetic person who can tell darn good stories, or just chatter well. I get a picture of the two of them sitting around a kitchen table or lounging out in a bedroom, with "Jewel" sort of fiddling with her guitar (I can sympathize with that habit) and Mr Whoever trading back and forth between his coffee and his butt, rattling off some story and occasionally grinning devilishly. I've always read that whole second verse as trying to say that (a) they both have passions, things they believe in and care about (...honest things, things simple, things that are clean...), but in the meantime, they've both sort of forgotten to be honest about those very things (...somewhere along the lines, I must've gone off track with you...). I really love this verse, which is why the Batman&Robin cut pisses me off every time I hear it. I hate it when lyrics are cut. It hacks a big chunk out of the musical integrity of a song, like removing a couple chapters at random from a book. And I believe I am officially babbling now. ;) Long story short, I don't think that the lyric in question was trying to suggest specifically that He was sleeping around on Her, though I suppose it's possible that He was.
