I bought Tara's CD "Silence" after hearing all the praising from fellow EDAs. Although her CD is good Tara is a MUST SEE live kinda artist...kinda like Jewel :) Friday night was my first time ever seeing Tara live and I was extremely impressed. After the show I went up to her and had her sign my "If You See Me" CD :) I was still kinda frantic because I had just sprint down 3 blocks of Santa Monica just to catch the end of her show. (I was stuck in 3 and a half hours of traffic on the way there). People thought I was nuts cause I was randomly asking people how far Borders was. People were probably thinking "damn..that girl really has to buy a book or something" hehe. As I stood in line to get Tara's autograph I did notice that Tara is kinda small like me :) I think she was 5'4 with her big heel boots? I don't know why but out of instinct the first thing I did was take out my EDA guitar pick that I keep in the back of my pocket for goodluck and handed it to Tara. Her face lit up as soon as she saw the EDA pick :) We chatted breifly while she was signing my CD. Then I asked her if she would be willing to take a photo with me (I always feel bad taking pictures of people while they are singing so I wait till the end). All in all Tara was a real delight, both her music and her as a person :) Now I know why all the EDAs her praising her :) Okies--that's all folks :) Take care my angels-- Mary wannabe angel :) "In the end only kindness matters" ~Jewel Kilcher ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Dec 1997 00:15:53 EST From: EDAngel1 Subject: NJC: For those whom I am dubbing RareAngels for-- Fellow EDAs, As many of you know I offerred to dub RareAngels around a month ago. Many have "confirmed" but have not sent anything to me :( I will be leaving town tomorrow for 2 and a half weeks so I will not be able to send out any tapes until I get back. I will still have access to my email thanks to my faithful laptop so feel free to email me with any comments or questions. For those of you who have already "confirmed" if you still want the tape just make sure I have a check from you waiting in my mailbox for me when I return :) Take care my angels-- Mary wannabe angel :) "In the end only kindness matters" ~Jewel Kilcher ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Dec 1997 02:58:32 EST From: HRENB Subject: Fwd: SJC RE: Who are Henry Miller and Anais Nin- Quick English lesson- This is a multi-part message in MIME format. - --part0_882172713_boundary Content-ID: <0_882172713@inet_out.mail.aol.com.1> Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII - --part0_882172713_boundary Content-ID: <0_882172713@inet_out.mail.aol.com.2> Content-type: message/rfc822 Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit Content-disposition: inline From: HRENB Return-path: To: jewel@amoe.org Subject: SJC RE: Who are Henry Miller and Anais Nin- Quick English lesson- Date: Mon, 15 Dec 1997 02:55:36 EST Organization: AOL (http://www.aol.com) Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit A little more detail on Anil's post Henry Miller (1891-1980) Was born in New York, married to a taxi driver named June Mansfield, and didnt get into serious writing until he was about 30. He and his wife moved to Europe and Paris ,but they were having some marital difficulties (Eventually he would have 5 wives in his life). In France, he wrote his most famous works, Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn- detailing his affairs and experiences as an expatriate in Paris- though they were huge sellers, but in the states they were banned as being sexually explicit. Nin (1903-1977) was born in France, spent some time in the states where she was married, then returned to Paris. She was a very intelligent, multitalented woman who spent time as a model, dancer, teacher, lecturer, writer, and psychoanalyst. She (and Miller) became part of an eclectic circle of writers and artists in Paris in the 1930's, and had several affairs, including a long ongoing one with Miller, and a brief fling with his wife June. (While she was married and also spending time with her psychology mentor Otto Rank). She also sometimes supported Miller with financial help. Her most well known writings were her journals, and House of Incest, Under a Glass Bell, A Spy in the House of Love, and Collages. She, unlike Miller, wrote detailed accounts of their affair, and they exchanged hundreds of letters. Henry and Anais found in each other an intelligence and renaissance-like view of the world, that few other people possessed, along with a deep passion for writing and of course physical pleasure. (Trying to keep this semi clean) Circles of artists and writers like those in that time and place rarely exist today, and I think Jewel is very Anaisish- looking for Henry. (I'm right here- lol) There is a movie called Henry and June which details much of this- although it is NC-17 some some of you younger angels may have to wait. Anyways sorry if I bored you but hopefully I enlightened someone. Will put a post up with Jewel/ Sylvia Plath connections soon. I wouldn't suggest putting any of these kinds of things on a '.net' domain, simply because .net is reserved for organizations providing or dealing with some sort of networking-related services. I'd like to also suggest 'jeweljk.org' because it's shorter. On the topic of using separate hostnames for each "section" of our webring/web site, if each section were run on its own web server now, we can just play with the DNS and point to the existing IP instead of dedicating a new machine/IP address for each new section. We couldn't do this for URLs like 'http://www.isp.com/~joebob', but URLs like 'http://res123.university.edu/' would work. Just make 'section.ourdomain.com' point to 'res123.university.edu', and we're set with no new IPs needed. If we *do* end up needing to host some of these web sites/pages on another machine, we can simply use 'virtual hosts', putting multiple IP addresses on the same physical machine. This will let us keep things separated into more than one hostname without requiring us to dedicate new machines for each new section. For the sake of simplicity and ease of management, however, it might just be simpler to go with 'www.ourdomain.com' and divide the "sections" into directories under that. It might be simpler yet to just create one simple page, on www.ourdomain.com, with links to other peoples' pages on other servers. We could have volunteers setting up an "official" lyrics page, etc. that we'd just link from the main page as if it were a section. If done properly and tastefully, it would all integrate together seamlessly. We could even use a bit of trickery with frames to make it appear to the end user that they'd never left www.ourdomain.com at all. If we do end up doing something like this, we wouldn't really need to dedicate a machine to the web site alone. Since it'd only be serving the one web page, it shouldn't bog down a PC very much. I'd be happy to volunteer some of my time to help out with something like this. I'll be pretty much unavailable until the middle of January, but if I can help in any way anytime after that, let me know. I might also be able to help out with the DNS allocations, etc. as I work for an ISP. I came across a website the other day that I thought I might pass on to all those EDA's who could use a good laugh. The site is called Joke A Day, and can be found at www.jokeaday.com. Once there you can subscribe to thier service and get a FREE joke e-mailed to you six days a week. :) There are two things you should know before you sign up though. First, most of the jokes are NOT politically correct, so if you can be offended by someone joking about something you believe in, you shouldn't go to this site. Second, the jokes are intended for mature audiences. (Sorry to all the young subscribers to this list.) If you aren't bothered by either of those little things, and don't mind having a couple of ads sent along with the joke, you should definitely check out Joke A Day. Palantir the Trekker Angel 0:P ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Dec 1997 21:00:13 -0800 From: "Henry" Subject: Piano sheet music I know there's several piano players out there who'd be interested in playing Jewel's music so here's a little tidbit. I guess by now most everyone has heard about the 4 page gif file for Foolish Games. This version is the piano part for the song on the PoY album version of Foolish Games. Only the beginning is familiar (where Jewel isn't singing), the rest is accompaniment. For anyone that doesn't know, I think you can get it at http://www.winnipeg.freenet.mb.ca/~lqq093 . Then, there's also Foolish Games and You Were Meant For Me sheet music with the lyrics available. Both melodies are the same (more or less) as the tune Jewel sings. They can be downloaded at the Sunhawk Corporation site www.sunhawk.com . It's a site where you can purchase (with a credit card) and download music. But you need a program that can be downloaded at the same site. You can also purchase these sheet music at stores where they sell piano music except there's two types of sheet music for each song. There's a publisher version (from Warner Music, I believe) where it's like any type of music that you buy with the picture on the cover and then there's one that can be printed from the stores computer. At least where I am. I live in Vancouver, BC, Canada and there's a music giant called Tom Lee Music. I hope this wasn't too confusing. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Dec 1997 01:17:54 -0500 From: Kris Kane Subject: Let's request radio stations play "Angel Standing By" Frank wrote: Subject: Re: Morning Song question Love1612@aol.com asked who were Henry Miller and Anais Nin, as referred to in "Morning Song". I though it worthwhile enough to write a couple paragraphs. Please write me if you have comments. Kim Henry Miller was a avant-garde writer who is probably best known for writing Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn, ribald commentaries of life and culture of the 1940s. Anais Nin was a writer (a better one than Henry in my opinion), a feminist, and a psychoanalyst. She is best known for her very personal diaries which she kept through almost all of her adult life. Anais had an affair with Henry Miller, and June, Henry's wife was involved in the affair at times. As documented by the some of the steamier parts of Anais' diaries, Henry and June's experiences were made into a movie a few years ago called, appropriately enough, Henry and June. Her writings made quite a scandel at the time, but they were no more risque/erotic/etc. nor without proper context or literary merit than those of James Joyce, Ernest Hemmingway, J.D. Salinger, Paul Goodman, Henry Miller, etc. The writings of men like those (and many other authors I don't have space to mention, I know I just listed men there) made history, set Supreme Court precidents, and were read by countless schoolboys intent on "opening their minds" decades before Playboy. Even John-Boy Walton read Henry Miller. Though patriarchal they still treated sexuality and critiqued western culture in a far more mature way than what young men and women get today by way of MTV. I like the diary version of Henry and June better than the movie. Anais' writing is descriptive enough without the pictures. Anais is also worth reading for a lot more than her affair with Henry and June. She was a pioneer in particular for her development of diary writing as a psychoanalytic tool. She wasn't just a good diary writer "for a woman", but the fact that she did it and she was a woman makes what she did all the more important. For more info, see these links.
