Subject: Jewel and Sylvia Plath

I was cleaning out my closet over Thanksgiving break and I came across my
poetry book from my freshman English class. After looking through it, I
came across some poems by Sylvia Plath. Two of the titles immediately
jumped out at me-"Morning Song" and "Daddy". I thought that this was an
amazing coincidence. Does anyone know if Sylvia Plath is one of Jewel's
many poetic influences or is it just that-a coincidence? Thanks in advance
for any light you can shed on the subject.

Hey all you EDA's in the land(s),

    I hope you all had a wonderful holiday and a good time during
thanksgiving. Well, I too, am one who does not post a lot on the list,
so it's rather important to me if I drag myself out of my cave to say
something. This is concerning the recent writings over Jewel and her
rudeness or whether she was smoking or whatever the next topic becomes.
My question would be-- what's the point? Jewel is my favorite artist
too, but what does this all mean? She's a human being or to a sharper
degree an everyday angel, but what does it matter if she tells someone
to shut up, or smokes(though it's already been established that she
doesn't, but the point holds up nonetheless)? None of you on the list
smoke or react sarcasticallyto something in a joking manner? Jewel
conducts her life in the spotlight whereas we're allowed the luxury of
privacy. I just think it becomes a moot point to defend Jewel's
actions-- she covers herself just fine.One of the things that I think we
all love about her is the fact that she is such a naturally 'real'
person. One can just tell that she is a person of subtance. I think she
would enjoy knowing she has fans such as us, but I don't think she loses
sleep wondering if she's conveying the image we all want.  She lives her
life as she likes and it's not Madonna-like, not Rodman-like, it's
Jewelesque. So who cares if she swears once in a while or God forbid she
should light up...I think we'll all stick with her anyway because of
what she stands for-- and what she stands UP for. That's my two cents--
back to my cave. Take care all you guys!!

i am sorry to say, my angels, that jewel in fact did make the comment to
lisa sanders that her playing was pathetic.  being somewhat close with
lisa, i talk to her after each show as to tell her how wonderful she was
and see what has been going on in her life.  upon talking to her friday
night at the pajama jam when only the eda's were left, i finally told her
how wonderful she was that night and how the whole house was filled with
tears when she played "rainbow" and "pride and joy".  she said thanks with
a disturbed look.  i asked her what was wrong and she then told me that
jewel had thought quite the opposite of her playing....jewel told lisa that
she was pathetic. i immediately asked if this was in a joking manner, and
she assured me that it was not.  i was extremely disturbed by this and
immediately defended jewel as all you would do, but she honestly felt that
jewel thought she was pathetic due to her comment.  not only did lisa tell
me, but there were many other angels that found this disturbing news out
about three in the morning after the concert.  of those, lora (that little
voice inside your head) who has already posted about the sad news, heard
this from lisa as well.  in fact, i talked to about eight people who had
received the same information from lisa as i had.  we thought it over for a
while as what to think, and we decided to disregard it until we see
something else that is upsetting.  and by the way, jewel told my friend who
was sitting in my lap, kaili, to shut up after she had given jewel a gift
for her and nedra.  it was in a joking manner, as she knows kaili extremely
well and she knew that kaili could take it as a joke.

Hello Angels~
    I am a new subscriber to the list and I have been adoring Jewel's music
for a long time now.  In the past week I have learned a great deal about
Jewel and her fans.  You all seem to be kind and generous souls.
    This past April I experienced a Jewel concert at the Berkely Community
Theatre in California that moved me immensely.  I believe the setting had a
lot to do with it.  A theatre is structured so that the audience is
completely immersed in darkness while the only light comes from within the
stage.  And when that light is a single spotlight focused on Jewel... well,
you just can't help but be entranced by the beauty of her song.
    If any EDA out there has a copy of this concert... needless to say...I
want it.  Desperatly.  For to trade or to buy.  Whatever.

Painters and Adrian-These are just stories she wrote.  I think Mary Epperson
was an old schoolteacher, but she really had nothing to do with the song.
Morning Song-Just about wanting to stay in bed

Subject: JEWEL & LISA SANDERS

HI EDAs, 

I was at Java Joes the night Jewel came down for a surprise visit. I got to
meet Jewel and Lisa Sanders. I was talking to Lisa and she and Jewel are good
friends. They kid around just like you do with your good friends. So when
Jewel says something like that to Lisa, it is in humor, not in rudeness.  As
Jewel left, I was standing next to Lisa and saw and heard them give a long
good bye gugs n' kisses fairwell to one another. Lisa talked highly of Jewel
after Jewel left, and said to my wife and I that she was glad that I got to
meet such a wonderful person like Jewel.

As for the "shut up" to the EDA talking to Jewel up front: Jewel always tells
people to shut up. It's JEWEL! But she says it with a SMILE. That's to let
you know she feels comfortable and close enough to you guys that she can kid
around with you too, like she does with Lisa. She always appologizes and
laughs after too. So don't take it so seriously, Jewel messes around like
that, but I am sure there is always  a smile in her heart as she does.

Subject: My interpretation of Morning Song and my thoughts...

Hi everyone! First, I'd like to say that this new "thread" has been great and
positive for me. Everyone who has contributed their thoughts on the manings
of songs have helped me to for my own opinion. Thanks!
Before this new subject came up I never really thought of Morning Song having
a meaning. I just thought it was a happy song. I read one of the posts about
it this morning and it kept me thinking all day. Anyway here's what I came up
with: Firstly, I think that with some of the things she says (i.e. "Stop
worying about it, the cat's already been fed") show that she's trying to
convince whoever she is with (a lover maybe???) to stop worrying about other
things and concentrate on her. Then, I also think that she has been with this
man she's with and is trying to start from scratch with him... "Pretend we're
perfect strangers and that we never met...". And that she wants a better
relationship with him than she had before... "Except this time it'll be even
better, We'll stay together in the end." Those are just my thoughts on the
subject. Thanks for listening!

Even the negatives have to be printed I guess....There's an Atlanta mag 
called Stomp and Stammer that is basically just 50 or so pages of 
whining.  They have been known to insult Jewel on more than one 
occaision. So, here's what they had to say this month.

"Lisa Loeb has polished up her safety glasses and unleashed a new album 
called Firecracker and apparently she's pissed off at Jewel for some 
reason. Oooh, catfight!"

AND

"On a whimsical note, Jewel has signed a $2 million publishing deal with 
Harper Collins that will have the 23 year old singer/songwriter penning 
her memiors and a book of poetry."

Subject: Jewel stuck up?  ha ha!

For all those doubting Jewel's personality (being nice, sweet, etc.).....here's
something to think about.  While most of us EDA's have never met her
personally do you think that anyone who is as stuck up as the tabloids may
say she is, would take the time to write to an e-mail list?  Well, Jewel
does this.  I have at least 10 letters to prove it...going back a few years
to the days when the list was still new.  She may not be sitting at the
computer typing herself, but the words you're reading are hers, coming from
her.  I think anyone who does this cares alot about the fans, and it would
be very hard for me to believe she's even the slightest bit stuck up, this
being if I hadn't ever met her...which I have...and can say she's really
nice.  Example...she played a 45 minute concert I went to, and the whole
time was coming down with bronchitis.  Plus, there were a few remarks made
from the crowd (not so nice), and the noisy cappacino machine in the
background going non-stop, and the whole time, she didn't once get rude, or
say anything that would seem stuck up...she didn't think she was "too good"
to keep playing.  She actually told several jokes, we all laughed.  And all
this took place AFTER her CD was already double platinum...so no one could
say the fame hadn't hit her yet...so to speak.  This wasn't something from
her early days...yet, she was just as nice as ever.  You wouldn't think she
was an artist whose album was at the top of the charts.  She was very down
to earth.  I hope this clears up some misconceptions that have been
surfacing here lately.

ok well I first fell in love with Jewel when I saw her in concert. Everyone
loved the fact that she had cute anticdotes and everything. She was very
entertaining and funny but every minute or so this jerk kept screaming out"I
love you jewel!!!!" She kept asking him to be quiet nicely but he just would
not shut up. Even when she specifically asked the entire audience of
thousands to be quiet for the next song he shouted out again. that was when
she said laughing "would that a**hole over there shut up!!"  People took that
with a grain of salt and I don't know how anyone could be offended by a
comment like that.  It was also special when she left the stage and the
applaud lasted for at least  two minutes. I love jewel and I would love to
meet her.

This was in reply to the Henry Miller and Anais Nin reference.  Jewel is

I think some of you guys are reading in too deep.  Some of these songs are
pretty self-explanatory like Painters and Adrian and stuff.  But, I find it

Hi all,
     I want to pass on the wonderful setlist that
Jewel performed at Java Joe's on friday night, but before
I do, allow me to completely squash the ridiculous
rumors circulating. 
    Not only did Jewel NEVER say the words "shut up" during
her performance, she performed what I considered the
most interesting set in a long time. What made it so, 
you ask?  Knowing the special group of people
in attendance, she played ALL NEW material with the
exception of the EDAs request for "Jessica". The audience
was totally respectful (& silent during the performances)
which always brings out her best. 
     Also, this ridiculous rumor claiming she was disrespectful
to Lisa Sanders is complete BS! In fact, she said how
honored she was to be playing on the same stage with people
she respected & loved so much!  During her performance she 
specifically named Lisa Sanders as one of those people! 
    So whoever decided it would be fun to play with this list by 
claiming otherwise is full of it.
      I'll ask AmyJo to transcribe exactly what Jewel said verbatim
in the next day or so. Rest assured she was nothing less than
gracious to all the performers that night!
      Also, I'd like to add that she came down to Java Joe's to
surprise the EDAs despite the fact that she had a 101 degree
fever & should have stayed in bed! Lenedra also had the fever
which is why she regretably wasn't there. THAT'S the truth!
      Here's the short but unforgetable setlist from her
performance at Java Joe's "EDAF PajamaJam". She did the 4th
of 6 incredible sets during this marathon show.

     Wednesday & Saturday night were also full of mezmerizing
performances. When Cindy Lee Berryhill sang her "God Bless The Living
Room Tour" encore on Saturday night, I had tears in my eyes for
the first time in years. It's one of those moments I'll personally
cherish forever!
