Hi! I think that this is what the white hood symbolizes... KKK members are
very racist and so was the father that Jewel wrote this song about. I think

ok. About this whole hidden meaning thing. I don't know about everyone, but
it seems to be that for a lot of people, we look for how other people
interpret these songs so we can gauge our own interpretations. It's like why
people sit around and talk about philosophy and politics. Duh everyone has
their own opinion-- that's what we're looking for! :0) I was going to throw
in my cheap $.02 about the meanings, but I've found that some people already
have posted something along the lines of what I thought. Aw geez, what was
the point of this post again?
On another subject, did everyone else find the Lilith Fair PPV thing as
disappointing as I did? I mean, yes, I do enjoy a whole lotta these artists,
but 2 songs?!? <shakes his head>

interpretations of her music..besides..that's what we are on this list
for..not to talk about manson or other singers, but to discuss jewel and her

conversation that isn't pointless going on..

jam, at first I was truly excited she was there, but as the night went on,

I think many over analyze Jewel's songs and her intentions.  Their
meaning is a personal issue and is different for each person.  That's
the great thing about her lyrics: there isn't a single or correct way to
interpret them, and if we asked all 1600 members on the list what
"Foolish Games" or "1000 Miles Away" means to them, we'd get as many
different answers as there are flowers.  So, in that sense, there are no
"hidden" or "subliminal" meanings.  There are thousands of overt
meanings and I don't think Jewel always necessarily had one specific
message she wanted to convey.  Such is the beauty of her complex lyrics.

    I am a new subscriber to the list and I have been adoring Jewel's =
music for a long time now.  In the past week I have learned a great deal =
about Jewel and her fans.  You all seem to be kind and generous souls.
    This past April I experienced a Jewel concert at the Berkely =
Community Theatre in California that moved me immensely.  I believe the =
setting had a lot to do with it.  A theatre is structured so that the =
audience is completely immersed in darkness while the only light comes =
from within the stage.  And when that light is a single spotlight =
focused on Jewel... well, you just can't help but be entranced by the =
beauty of her song. =20
    If any EDA out there has a copy of this concert... needless to =
say...I want it.  Desperatly.  For to trade or to buy.  Whatever.

Some artists (eg Seal) refuse to publish the words for 
their songs for just this reason.  I'd agree with your contention that
there are many possible interpretations of songs (is this
postmodernism? I can never remember!).  IMO the mark of a good song is
that it does evoke specific emotions in the listener - there is
normally one 'right' (read dominant) emotion evoked but the way we
accept and understand it may differ from person to person.

As far as Foolish Games is concerned I'd have guessed the title says
it pretty well.  In the realm of this song someone has entered a
relationship with a man (at least in my perception) that really wasn't
interested but just wanted to play 'love'.  I'd also contend that
Don't is a plea to try to make someone aware that 'OK I've opened up
and made myself very vulnerable - please don't play games because it
will hurt too much'.

The only song I didn't like on POY was I'm sensitive - mainly because
I think some degree of cynicism is necessary for survival.  Too much
cynicism stops you from doing anything positive and not enough has you
trying to do too much that does no one any good.

Hey Angels,

I was reading the post about Jewel coming to the "Pajama Jam" or whatever
and was shocked to hear that Jewel would "tell her friends to shut up." 
This really bothers me.  After I read this, I thought to myself:  "Jewel
would never do something like that!"  And then I thought:  "How do you
know?"  

It was at that point that I realized something:  I DON'T KNOW JEWEL!!! 
I've spent all this time on her mailing list getting 60 e mails a day
about her, listening to her music, admiring her, and writing her address
on occasion, hoping for a reply- and yet I have never met this person.  I
haven't even been to ONE of her concerts!  

How do I know that she isn't some stuck-up brat?  Every time I see her on
TV she seems very kind, but then again I hear these quotes, stories or
whatever about how rude Jewel was.  In my opinion, fame gets to people's
heads very easily.  Most celebrities are jerks. How do I know Jewel
isn't?  In my opinion, the best way to see someone as they truly are is
when the cameras are off and he/she is dealing with a real person.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is that does anybody out there have
personal experience with Jewel?  Can any of you EDAs out there say you
honestly know Jewel for who she really is?  I'm not insulting Jewel in
any way, I am just very curious.  I would still like to believe that
Jewel is a kind, understanding person.  She probably is.  I just don't
know for sure...
