First I come in as a "newbie" in the middle of the argument about "newbies". This was a turn-off to the list for me in the first place. Each time I read the digest, I become closer and closer to just asking for my name to be scratched from the list. You guys are blind to reality!! All I see is a bunch of people who try to one up each other on their fan status. How stupid is that? I became a Jewel fan when WWSYS first hit the radios and then I picked up POY, but who cares? Who cares who has been the Jewel fan for the longest? Who cares who has been with this list for the longest? Who cares who has the most "angelfood"? It doesn't matter. A person who just started listening to Jewel yesterday should be regarded with as much respect as someone who saw her and loved her in her coffee shop days. This is for one reason...and that is because we love her for her music and her words and her sincerity and how that plays out in our lives. Pure and simple, that is what makes you and me and the other person a Jewel fan. There is no need for status here!!! We all love her for that reason. She rejects status. Do you think Jewel would be proud to see that her digest was just a bunch of people trying to one up each other? I think not. Open your eyes. Let's see what we really are. In fact, just because we are a Jewel fan doesn't mean that we are an "angel". It means we have an appreciation for the qualities of the "angel" we admire. So let's talk about what's important. This isn't a competition. It is a place to keep each other updated on info. on our "angel" and to show how and why we love her! I can't for the life of me remember whether or not we were taught a name for that specific technique in AP English (gimme a break, it's been a whole *six months*...), but the general idea of repetition is and has been used widely in poetry for hundreds of years. Repetition of words or phrases in poetry (including lyrics) can help establish a theme, or give resolution to a piece (such as in Foolish Games). The whole idea of a chorus in a song is, in fact, an extension of the same technique. Repeating certain phrases establishes continuity, and makes it easier for the listener/reader to get involved with the work. Stop and think about how many rock songs *don't* have a chorus or several repeated sections where identical or similar lyrics are sung over a melody. "Painters" and "Amen" are the only Jewel songs (off the top of my head) that don't have fairly well-established choruses, and even Painters uses a repeated block of lyrics and melody at the beginning and end.
