I've seen her perform live a number of times, and met her at least three times that I can remember. I was fortunate to attend JewelStock with my daughter (a former list member) and meet a couple hundred of these crazy people who make up this EDA community. Later, I drove 4 hours through a nasty snowfall to attend Liz Clark's 16th birthday bash, which was one of the very first EDA gatherings NOT tied to a Jewel concert. 30 people spent a wonderful weekend at Liz's, and the core Midwest attendees have congregated several times since, for concerts or just to hang out. I have always been impressed by the wonderful sense of brotherhood that I sense at these gatherings. It seems (as was suggested last night by Pat on IRC) that the people who go to the effort of organizing or attending these fetes are truly extraordinary, even among list members. :-) I have been a regular on the AOL and IRC chat channels almost since their inception, due to my computer-geek syndrome, and have enjoyed chatting with friends old and new over the past year and a half. I have been treated to kindnesses uncounted by Liz, Shelly, Dan, Tim, Mia, Steve, Bob, Larry, and Tessa (just off the top of my head). These people have truly gone out of their way to help me get rare recordings, join gatherings, and sometimes just to listen when I needed an ear. There's an overlap among the IRC, mail list, and in-person EDAs; not 100%, but significant. Anyway, I've seen a lot of fellowship, and a lot of skirmishing, in all three arenas. It seems that the disagreements and name-calling come from a few situations: 1) Lack of familiarity with netiquette and the FAQs. Mike Connell has prepared a terrific web page at http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/ which is a good starting place. If everyone who joined the list or IRC channel would look over this page first, a lot of the confusion and hassle could be avoided. 2) Unrealistic expectations. As Tessa posted a bit ago, the EDA community engenders high expectations; we have a good word-of-mouth. But it's a bit like walking into a party where you don't know anyone and demanding their respect before you get to know them. Consider: those of you who are party-goers; do you walk into a party, elbow your way into the first group you encounter, and start berating the members for not welcoming you into the fold? I mean, they're party veterans -- they've been here longer than you have... I bet what you really do is stand nearby, listen for a bit, and wait for a time to interject a pertinent comment, yes? Just the same. You'll find most of us quite friendly to newcomers, as long as you give us a chance to get to know you. 3) Tolerance. As Gian and Tessa posted, we are kind of used to people popping into the channel, or posting to the list, making what seems like rude or insensitive comments, and then reveling in the chaos that seems to follow. This problem is twofold. One, if the poster is making comments out of ignorance or misunderstanding, he/she needs to be willing to hang around and learn from the mistake. No one will be crucified for a mistake born from lack of information or inexperience, as long as both sides make an effort to keep it from happening again. Two, some of us tend to react negatively to inflammatory comments, escalating the conflict. If someone is delibe4tely trying to be mean, and refuses to discuss the subject rationally, ignoring them has a wondrous effect on the conflict. As a rule, I don't like to unsubscribe or ban a member unless they repeatedly disrupt the conversations or flout the rules. But those are bad manners regardless of the situation. The bottom line: as I was discussing last night on IRC, I think that by being tolerant and opening our doors to a huge number of people, we are going to invite a number of potential conflicts. What we do when conflict arises determines whether we will continue to have a list and IRC channels, or not. To moderate the channels and list puts a heavy load on the moderator, and tends to repress people from talking about off-topics -- the same things that often let us connect as human beings. OTOH, total liberty often results in chaos and squabbling. The answer? We must try to follow common-sense etiquette as well as the spirit of the rules; or else the list owner, channel ops, etc. will have to step in periodically and restore order. No sense whining about it -- those are the consequences of a society where you're using other people's property and resources, and trying to maintain freedom of speech at the same time. You want total freedom? Start your own channel, mailing list, or Internet provider. I love you all. Let's move on, and all try to live up to our charter. :-) - -- | Greg Dunn | And all you touch and all you see | | GregDunn@aol.com | Is all your life will ever be. | | gregdunn@indy.net | Pink Floyd | | http://members.aol.com/gregdunn | | ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Nov 1997 17:02:11 -0500 (EST) From: Zstructure@aol.com Subject: discontinue jewel posts please do not send me any more mail and discontinue the service. i love jewel but all these useless posts are ridiculous ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Nov 1997 15:12:25 From: John Leazer & Family Subject: Re: Very Disturbing...Jewel as the ANTI-CHRIST?! Although newbies should be aware of most of the things they post about (i.e. What is Angelfood?), some of it is acceptable (i.e. like not knowing what the JEWELry project is). I just think that before people flame the list or anybody you need to take a look at what you're going to do. "Cause anyone can start a conflict, it's harder yet to disregard it".
