I have come out of hiding after 4 months of idling on the list... but I can tell you I HAVE been reading. OH yes... for almost a year now... I have been an EDA, and I watched the list blow up to grand proportions... and then go crazy ( I do not exempt myself from this, as I never unsubbed during this time, just idled) and then become moderated for one reason or another... I have now found myself very unsettled with a certain thread of posts, so here I am, wings-out, sleeves rolled up, and ready to clean up some vast misconceptions. IRC... If you have been on this list for a while, you will have heard that many of us EDA's hang out on the Undernet on a regular basis in channels #Jewel and #EDA. We have our share of problems... often corresponding with the majority of problems on the list. These are usually shorter lived than those on the list as we have virtually instantaneous communication. However, we have had a few inside problems, as one other list members pointed out, and which do not have anything to do with this matter. I believe that the problems we seem to be upon now are the type that fall in the grey area, or list/IRC inconsistancies. Joe, a fellow EDA, wrote to the list earlier a very negative post on his disgust with our channel on the Undernet. He also very truly pointed out that we have had these list/IRC controversies in the past. These have been posted to the list but soon forgotten, as normally we IRC'ers let the water roll down our backs. But, I was compelled to write a reply to this complaint, as Mr Joe failed to tell the whole story. It was this afternoon ( 11/17/97) when we were all chatting away when joe728 joined the channel. He was very quiet at first, as most newbies to IRC are. After a while of going unoticed... Joe asked us a question: Anybody know anything about the EDA JEWELry project? [to which was replied by a few of us]: nope [AND] not much Joe then went on: nobody knows anything about the EDA JEWELry??? [ to which was replied again]: nope i cant believe it...are you guys EDAs? most of us are old timers and this is a new idea bye the newer generation <}angle{> we are some veterans me2...i just cant believe you havent heard of it....its my idea..i've been around for a year and a half.. I've heard of it i've definitely heard of it just don't know any info on it I dont want any and it's a great idea that was old mail I wouldnt wear it just depends on if you are interested is all i cant believe you people... Sure, some of the comments weren't so EDA-like, but come on, who is ALWAYS angelic? Now, I will be one of the first to point out, that few of us on IRC that are veterans are still subscribed to this list. Those of us who are, we do not post very often, if at all. The influx of newbies has been immense and we are still trying to get used to it. Joe, your post was partly true, some of us weren't so nice to you, but I do not see anywhere on my screen where we deserve to be called, "heartless, mean and ignorant." In any case, your post seemed to me, as well as to a few other veterans AND prominent names to this list AND IRC, to be just that... "heartless, mean, and above all, ignorant." I think that before you go around accusing others of not loving and accepting everyone, as you obviously CLAIM to do, but have shown other wise (see above log), that you realize that we are all human. We all have feelings, we are all sensitive, we are all TRYING to do our best to be EDA's. Trying is the key word there, we cant all be angelic ALL of the time, but we CAN try. We realize that this meeting was not under the best of circumstances, but you have to take into concideration your own actions as well. We all KNOW that none of us are perfect... that is one of the understandings we must accept in order to BE an EDA. How can we be accepting and loving of everyone, if we are so critical of what we call "IMPERFECT?" I am sorry for such a long post, but I finally got this all out! Ok, in another post... some one called our channels "poorly moderated and a disgrace to all of us." I would like to address this personally. It has ben 5 long years since I was a newbie on IRC. I don't know if you are all aware that there are different nets to chat on... Undernet and EFnet beig two of them. I started out as a wide-eyed teenager on EFnet, the largest, cruelest, and most uncouth nets of them all. You get kicked for all sorts of ridiculous reasons, banned for being nice, and taken over just for giving OPs (powers) to strangers just to be nice. I joined the Undernet community last March with #Jewel. #Jewel had too many problems... yes, it still exists, for we still own it, but too many horny teenage boys come in wanting to trade thier souls in for a naked pic of Jewel. Sooooo, #EDA was created to keep out all the commotion about Jewel's boobs. (so sue me for lack of a better word) #EDA and #Jewel are sister channels, and so most of us frequent both or whatnot... anyhow, we have had problems with young ladies and thier clashing personalities, which have been taken care of accordingly, although vastly disputed. The inner gears of #EDA are those of us who hold Ops. Just like in Government or ANY group of people, everyone has different ideals to live up to. This has been EVERY channel's problem... EVERY list's problem... and EVERY group's problem at one time or another. It is very hard to come to a just and fair decision sometimes, but somehow it is managed, or so it is believed. The internet was not a medium meant to be censored. That is the beauty and fun of the internet. If we are too moderate in the channels, we are not allowing personalities, opinions, and freedom to shine. This is a HUGE dillema when it comes to our attention that one of the channels OR the list (ask Mike) needs some help. So instead of bashing us for TRYING to be fair, try instead to understand how hard it is for those in charge to be fair to all parties involved. Now i joined the Jewel channel on undernet when i first joined this list, and after awhile it became home, it was a release where i could go have some fun, and make even more friends. And that i have. Then there was a channel made for EDA's, and that channel has become home to many an EDA, we make fun of eachother, console eachother, give eachother advice, humour eachother, and stick up for eachother. Just as friends, and good friends would do. That is what i thought EDA was, being there for one another, not all this Angel business, because that is getting tiring. An Everyday Angel is another word for a nice understanding person, not a saint, who can't make mistakes. In the channel there have been times where people have gotten rude, and may i point out that people on this list have gotten rude on more then one occasion. But that's no reason to judge it harshy, because there are so many people to consider. When i quit this list, i quit it because i was getting tired of it, there were too many people constantly being immature, and didn't know when to stop the fight, or argument, but i never quit the EDA channel. And now i'm back here, because i believe in giving everything a second chance. Now Joe, i wasn't there when all this happened, but it seems to me that you jumped the gun. I'd be more then willing to talk about it, in private. One more thing, before i go.. EDA has been made into a fairy tale, it has been made so that no one can achieve it. Everyone talks about what it is to be an EDA, well if you've heard Jewel live, or in an interview, she's not perfect, not one of us here is perfect, and this list won't make you perfect. It may change you to be better in some way, open your eyes that there are good people out there, but it also has made some of you jump down the throats of others just because of a mistake, or mishap, or even miscommunication. It's turned some to think that they are better then others, just because they are part of this EDA list.. well if you think about it, that's wrong. Just like religion, don't make this list control your actions, or what you believe.. All those things should be controlled by you.
