They make fun of everyone who's popular, and Jewel just happens to be right now, so she fell into the war path. Don't take it to heart, hey it's free advertising. The whole purpose was just to make the general public, not die-hard Jewel fans, laugh. Think about it, EDA is probably, no, is the leading Jewel fan club, and there's only 1500 of us. Compared to the millions of SNL watchers, we're peanuts in the ratings polls...besides, of all the people complaining about it, half of them will watch next week...the week after that...and so on. Like I said, it's free advertising, and just goes to show how popular Jewel really is. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Nov 1997 13:37:20 -0500 () From: Jeff Kirschner Subject: Regarding SNL Regarding SNL, I don't think we should get too worked up about it because being parodied on SNL shows that Jewel has "made it". back in '95 who would of guessed that Jewel would be so ingrained in the public's conciousness that an institution like SNL would actually devote a whole skit to parodying her. But the main reason that we shouldn't give SNL much thought is because the skit wasn't funny, period. It was dumb, juvenile, obvious and lacking any sort of creativity whatsoever. The fact that Jewel lived in her car and grew up on a farm in Alaska is at this point so well known that to make fun of it is merely redundant. And to make fun of Jewel's music based on three singles...please. C'mon SNL, we know you can do better than that. Parodying Jewel was inevitable as it is part of stardom, but, if you are gonna make fun of her, do it well. If anybody is worried that the skit will cause people to dislike Jewel, don't. Jewel's true fans who respect her talent, like us, will dismiss the skit for the juvenile, cheap shot that it is. Those that don't like Jewel have already made up their minds that they don't like her for whatever reason, and the SNL skit will not have much of an effect either way. By the way, on an unrelated topic, has anybody had a chance to check out the official website yet. It's kinda cool, a little bit skimpy in content, but there are some really nice pictures and the potential for future improvement is definately there. Take care. Peace, Jeff :) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Nov 1997 14:14:16 -0500 From: Lynne Toussaint Subject: RE: SNL I saw that too, but everyone, you gotta consider, they also used Missy = "Misdemeanor" Elliot in the skit. After she preformed on the show, and did quite well, they were still compelled to do such an awful job portraying her. One thing they did that angered me was that they had someone come in to comment that her career was over after 8 months, and she whined, "But I lived out of my car!" This only adds to the hollywood hype of her "making this up to add to her popularity". In the sketch, she also sang WWSYS and YWMFM as the same song, as if she didnt know the difference between her own songs. To top it all off, the girl who played her was accentuating her hair and facial features very negatively and made her look awful! This may have been just an innocent "poking fun", as SNL tends to do, but I thought it was way out of hand.
