PLEASE, DO NOT send an order to me unless you recieved a "reserve confirmation"! As I thoroughly explained in my post, there was only 12 tour books left. All are spoken for already. I took the time to email EVERY person who contacted me with a "reserve confirmation" or a "sorry, all are spoken for" message. Make sure you have a "reserve confirmation" BEFORE sending me your order. If you didn't read the instructions & already sent an order without confirmation, I'll be forced to use your self adressed mailer to return your order unfilled. :-( If you are about to make this mistake, please stop & do not send anything to me. What follows is my account of what I did. :) At 11:30am I met up with folks from "In the Wings" (Tara MacLean's email list) and "Fumbling to Ectasy" (Sarah McLachlin's email list)- present were Laurie, Justin, a different Tara and Sarah, Tracy, Lianne, Paul "I have purple hair and can eat with my hands" Kim, and his friend Ned. We had lunch at Grendel's in Harvard Square. If folks are in Boston, I highly recommend this restaurant. Harvard Square was closed to traffic for OctoberFest and so we headed over to the HMV stage where we waited for Tara's performance at 2pm. There we linked up with the Snyders. Chris was back up in Boston from College in North Carolina. :) Good to see you again Chris! It was a beautiful autumn day, the leaves were starting to change, there was a cool breeze, and Tara was playing. What more could one ask for? :) Tara's set was phenomenal as usual. There is no question Bill Bell and Tara MacLean make a powerful team. I can't help but keep thinking that Tara keeps getting better. Her performance attracted so many people that her CDs were going like hot cakes the moment her set ended. HMV actually ran out of CDs in minutes and had to get more stock to replenish their outside display (and they had a ton out to begin with). So to anyone who may be new to the Jewel list, go see Tara MacLean if she's playing in your area, you won't regret it! She is a unbelievalbly powerful, passionate performer who sings from her heart. We hung around and chatted with Tara, Bill, and Stacey, the New England Nettwerk rep. Being the Boston regulars, Tara, Bill, and Stacey knew all of us pretty well and a good time was had by all. Tara really missed seeing us! :) We all said our goodbyes and headed off to MixFest. Tara and Bill are definitely two of the nicest people around. ^_^ MixFest was in one word, CROWDED. I had a feeling Government Center wasn't going to be big enough and I was right. By the time Paula Cole hit the stage, the place was packed beyond belief. We had difficulty locating any of the EDAs and there was no way we could get back to where the Snyders had put their lawn chairs and where Tegan, Rachel and friend, and Erica were. I spent most of the time wandering with the Snyders- Chris managed to get a press pass because of a special project and so was actually let into the press area to take pictures! Lucky bummer! :) 21 rolls of film, that's sick Chris. :) But given the situation and the opportunity, you'd have been a fool not to take advantage of that. :) So it's both impressive and sick. ;) The Bare Naked Ladies were loud and there was no way we were going to be able to get in- I made several attempts, but couldn't get in any position to see the stage. The place was a madhouse. Talk about packed! Finally we made an attempt to find positions to try to see Sarah McLachlan's performance. Karen found a MixFest access bracelet, and as we wandered, I was able to rig it so that Karen could actually put it on. So Karen got in. :) Jack Snyder and I started out resigned to the jumbotron, but when we couldn't hear squat when Sarah started with "Building a Mystery," we decided to head around and try to squeeze our way in. Eventually, with people leaving, we did move into the main amphitheater. Sarah actually did a very short 6 song set and when she said goodnight, a lot of people started leaving. Opportunity knocked and I managed to move to a position where I got a clear shot of the stage, though from a wee distance away. With the continuous applause, Sarah came back out to do an encore of 2 more songs- unfortunately not being a real diehard Sarah McLachlan fan at the time, the only songs I recognized by name in her sets were Building a Mystery, Possession, and Hold On. Her songs just take on a whole new dimension live. I'm still amazed. :) If there's one thing I've learned from this experience, it's that Sarah McLachlan is a powerful performer. I didn't realize what kind of stage charisma she had until I saw this show. She handled the crowd really well, she was comfortable, she joked, and people loved her. Also the power of her songs was utterly intense live. I had no idea she was such a powerful performer until I saw this show and I think I'm a dedicated Sarah fan now too. ^_^ I didn't particularly care too much for Sarah McLachlan before this show, but after it, I have a whole new view on things. Those Fumblers know their stuff. :) After the performance, we reunited with Tegan, Erica, the Snyders, Paul Kim, and Laurie and Justin from FTE and ITW. We said our good byes and I headed with the Snyders, Rachel and friend, and Erica to dinner in Fanuell Hall. I forget the name of the restaurant, it was a mexican place. :) So all in all, it was a great evening. I wish we could have gotten the Fumblers to come and eat with us (since a good number of us are on Tara's list "In the Wings), but alas, the evening moved quickly and people headed off. Tegan needed to get going (I hope you like the pix!), and we found neither head nor tail of Dennis who said he was going to be there, or any other EDAs. It was a tiring but definitely wonderful day. :) Albert Wang Dark Seraph bahamude@user1.channel1.com Jewel Quotes and QTs http://hugse1.harvard.edu/~wangal/jewel.html Tara MacLean Gallery http://hugse1.harvard.edu/~wangal/tara.html ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Oct 1997 14:23:47 -0400 From: "Rachel Vilson" Subject: [none] Hey Jewel fan! After a late start ( we had to drop off a movie, and I refused to wake up ), we got to City Hall Plaza around 8:30/9. The "venue" was actually a stage set up with concrete steps all around it. When we got there, we met up with Chris, Mom, & Dad Snyder and immediately left again to find some food. After a small Mickey D's breakfast and the purchase of a huge blue balloon ( $3.15 ), we returned to home base to find Tegan setting up all her recording equipment. I drew an angel on the balloon, and wrote "EDAs" in big, black letters. The Snyders had set up our area so that there was a lawn chair on each of the back corners of our blanket. They strung a blue ribbon between the chairs, so ( theoretically ) nobody would move into our space. I tied the balloon to the back of Karen/Mom's chair, and we sat and waited for the concert to begin. ( caution : overly sensitive EDAs may be offended by the next paragraph ) The radio station was playing a Fleetwood Mac song, and we heard a woman singing along with it, at the top of her lungs, close behind us. She was getting the words all wrong, and making up things. Tom and I both turned around to look at her. She was standing near our chairs, and her long skirt was all mis-buttoned. Karen was standing near her chair. I'm not sure how it started, but I heard Karen saying something to the woman. I turned around and saw that the woman was holding the EDA balloon and dancing with it :). The woman yelled, "She pushed me ! She pushed me, and this nice man right here can testify !" ( The nice man was Karen's husband, who knew Karen never touched to woman ). Karen tried to reason with her. The woman yelled "Who would bring a balloon to a concert, anyway ?" then she said "it's mine ! It's mine !" and started having a tug-of-war with Karen. Karen had the chair, but the woman had the balloon, and she won. The woman then walked away with our EDA balloon. I hadn't been watching most of the struggle, because I was hoping the woman would just go away if we ignored her. Nope. The woman went away with the EDA balloon and held it high up in the air. At first I was really mad.. but then I found it hysterical. I kept imagining newbies walking up to this woman and going "you're an EDA ? What's your email address ?" Tegan videotaped the woman dancing with our balloon over by the second stage. Then, about a half hour later, the woman let go of our EDA balloon. Oh well. The show ( my view on it ) : - - Duncan Sheik was boring. All his songs sounded the same to me. - - Big Head Todd & The Monsters were boring. All THEIR songs sounded the same. They had this woman singing with them who kept on screaming out really low notes. it was cool the first time, even for the first song... but she was a one trick pony. The crowd seemd impressed, though. - - Paula Cole ROCKED. I've never seen her live before, and it was an amazing show. She has SO much charisma. She impressed me billions of times over. (Erica... 7 people.... *sniff* ) - - Lisa Loeb was cute, and good. I had a hard time paying attention to her... but she did a lot of talking to the audience, which was very cool. In that way, she reminded me of Jewel. - - Barenaked Ladies- I heard this was a great set. However, I only stayed for the first song. By then everyone but Tegan and I had abandoned our blanket, and we were squished together. It was extremely uncomfortable, and I hated it, so when Erica got back from getting an autograph, I left. Tom and I tried to walk around Fanueil Hall, but we managed to get there at 6, when everything closed . Oh well. - -Sarah Mclachlan was good- as far as I know. I couldn't SEE her set, but I heard it, and it sounded great. So after the show we met up with our little group and found a couple more EDAs - Albert Wang and Paul Kim. Paul ran off to hang out with the Fumblers ( traitor ) and Albert stayed with us. Tom, Erica and I went to secure our table at the restaraunt. There's a long story about the tables we got at the restaraunt which I won't go in to. We were waiting for this one table to clear up.... but the people were still sitting at the table, playing with their ice and looking incredibly bored, when we left. Oh well. Albert convinced me some chili sauce wasn't "really hot " , so I put it directly on my tongue and promptly drank almost all of Tom's root beer trying to make it stop burning. I somehow touched my face with the finger that I put the chili sauce on- so my face started burning. What an adventure. We paid for dinner, said quick goodbyes to all, and left. We managed to get home without falling alseep at the wheel ( I actually only woke up when we got to the toll booth and I couldn't find my money ). And then... that's all:). Rachel :D PS- I just got accepted to work at the Members Helping Members site on AOL. A real AOL expert in your mist, guys..
