Subject: NJC: The Magic's in the Music: Laura Love / Bent Sceptre Hi angels, As we get ready for our month-long fast from NJC, I thought I would take a moment to recommend two new CDs for your listening pleasure. The first is by an emerging artist named Laura Love. Her CD, entitled "Octaroon," is a gem -- every cut. I don't really like to classify people's music, but I guess if pressed I would have to say she's got an Afro-Celtic-folk-pop sensibility. This CD is a keeper. The second is a recommendation from Steve Poltz. It's a band from Iowa (!) he heard as an opening act on the Rugburns' last tour, named "Bent Sceptre." His manager, Bob Duffey, gave me a copy of their CD (he's now managing them, too). Steve normally doesn't listen to the opening bands, because he's usually getting "ready" to perform, but when he and Bob heard the music from the robing room, they rushed in to give a close listen, and they got hooked right away. (Steve and Bob each told me the identical story, separately. Maybe Steve has a piece of them, too?). These guys are easier to classify, because all you have to do is close your eyes and it's 1965. They are totally derivative but fresh and totally fun, and they even cover a rare Steve Poltz song on their CD ("Kissing Truman Capote's Picture"). They most remind me of The Animals, but there are elements of The Dave Clark Five, The Ventures, Question Mark and the Mysterians ("96 Tears," in case you're too old or too young to remember), and a hint of Doors; in sum, it's just 1965, pure and simple. If you buy this CD and like it, send me an email so I can get EDA credit for us! Have a great vacation! Loveya! - -=-Larry-=- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 8 Oct 1997 23:07:59 -0400 (EDT) From: CornflkGl@aol.com Subject: NJC: Adopt A Newbie and ramblings. Hi guys :) The AAN website is newly updated as of today ( Weds. ). It looks good, it's got a couple more states and a bunch more newbies and adoptions. But... seeing how the list is changing to basically news-only, the prospects for AAN look kinda grim ( at least, for now ). I will keep the program going, but I don't see any need for it while the list is news only. There will be no idle chit chat, and no netiquette rules to be following. Newbies probably won't feel left out, because there will be no sense of community. I repeat: I WILL keep the program going. I just don't see the point of having it right now. I've been running it for over a year, and I've thought about giving it up quite a few times- only in the past month or two have I really been working at it and being proud of it. Oh well. Let's hope this news-only list thing will do all that it's supposed to do. Let's hope it teaches us all the lessons we all ( apparently ) need to learn, and let's hope we don't all feel like strangers when the normal list gets to come back. *sigh* See some of you at Mixfest on Sunday... This is an Invitation to all EDA's to come out to California for a great get together. We'll volunter at a shelter for Thanksgiving and then have our own on Friday. Friday night we will then head to Java Joe's to see some wonderful musicians. Joe from Java Joe's has invited us to stay the night after the show. One more thing; bring any used clothing for some very needy families in Jamaica.(From infant to adult, male or female) So if you're coming out or live in California and wish to take part in this fun filled holiday email us or give us a call at 714 443-3623. For those who already have their airline tickets let us know as soon as possible when you plan to arrive so we can make arrangemenents to pick you up. P.S. Mandy and James Kalanick just stopped by this afternoon to pick up their puppy, Buttercup. It was so great to see James holding her. He says he is getting some feeling back in his legs but he still has a long way to go. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 09 Oct 1997 00:40:49 -0400 From: Crunch Subject: Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fonder =) I have plundered my mind in search of some inspiring and far-too-intelligent words to give on the temporary news-only mode of the list. I don't really think that any are really needed, its merits speak for themselves. =) Jewel is out of the country, and there will be little to no Jewel-related material to talk about. What a great time to take a break and enjoy the absolutely wonderful fall weather that 90% of the United States is now experiencing! We should all be outside playing, instead of inside reading other people's personal e-mails that accidentally got posted to a mailing list. =) We should all be outside walking, hiking, rollerblading, biking, climbing, playing ball, staring at the clouds, rolling in the leaves, enjoying the colors, and clean, cool air! It is a great time to alive, active, and very silly! =) And if you want to relate your new and wonderful adventures to your wild and marvelous EDA friends, then you can! For they will still be checking their e-mail, and still waiting to hear from you. Privately, of course, like it should be! You do have all your friends e-mail addresses in your on-line address book, don't you? They are just a click away! =) And what a great time for the Adopt- A-Newbie program to fluorish! It gives the veterans extra time to take on the added responsibilities of the artful and thoughtful education of their "child". It also gives the "children" ample time and creative talent to devour the archives in an effort to stump the intellect of their "parent" with a multitude of researched Jewel and list trivia! There is no reason why there should be any newbie in the program without a parent! Veterans should want to share their knowledge and more recent members all should want to learn. What better time than this! =) Ah, yes! And in one short month we will all get back together, and astound each other with the new knowledge and insight we've gained. And, refreshed from a little rest and relaxation, we will once again endeavor to search out the meaning and embodiment of our goal and namesake: THE EVERYDAY ANGELS =) Be an Angel Every Day !! =) Crunch ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #826 ***************************
