Theres >an easy way to do this that might even be fun in the process. > All the digests from the past 2 years are archived online at: >http://www.smoe.org/lists/jewel/archives/ I cannot tell you how helpful this was when I first joined the list in December. I especially recommend reading digests from may/june 1996, while preparations for JewelStock were being made. Sure I'm a history minor and all and super interested in this kind of stuff but I think it's really really important to know where we all came from and where this list has been; as in, you can't know what the future holds unless you know what happened in the past. > I'm sure anyone who's experienced an EDA event, be it Jewelstock, >The Living Room Tour gigs, or simply meeting other EDAs, can tell >you that theres something incredibly special going on here. "There's something incredibly special going on here." :) Honestly. I've been lucky enough to be in a geographic area where I've been able to attend some great EDA gatherings such as LizStock and the EDAdventure as well as two Living Room Tour shows, ChuckStock, ... and some great personal experiences with Jewel, the Rugburns, Cindy Lee Berryhill, and Elizabeth Hummel that happened solely because of people on this list. The people I have met and the experiences I have... experienced can't be matched. Here's another reason to look in the archives: every gathering has been accompanied by scores of reports on how great they were. Find out more about your fellow EDAs! >whats hapnin here. The AAN site is at: >http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3079/newbies.html Another great EDA service; when I joined, Rachel adopted me and taught me "all I needed to know." I've asked if anyone has STL that they want to sell and as I expected, I recieved no response. I know a lot of you guys have it but probably just don't want to sell it. Well to all you Alanis fans (and to those that are not Alanisly inclined) I have a copy of both "Alanis" and "Now Is The Time" in excellent condition and would be willing to trade a copy. To all of you who have not heard of these, this is the STL of Alanis. MICHELLE ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 8 Oct 1997 13:57:22 -0400 (EDT) From: Fanojewels@aol.com Subject: i hope this helps new edas :) hi edas, thank you all so much for helping me on my school project about this list. ive been talking to a lot of new and old edas about it. you are all so incredible and nice! larry was a big help to me and i think what he told to me will help all the new edas understand the list better. her is his letter to me. thank you edas for all your help and please still write to me about the people that make the jewel list special! love, anna :) Dear Anna: I was flattered to be mentioned in the same company as those whose names made it to your "examples" list, and I guess that's what inspired me to respond to your request. I think that the main reason that this list is so special is that we have a genuine love and support for one another. That became obvious to me when I first discovered the list in May of 1996, just as plans for Jewelstock were starting to be made. The enthusiasm and camaraderie were infectious, and I immediately felt as though I were part of a family that had been brought together not only by the mutual wonder and appreciation we share for such a gifted artist, but also by the universal truths Jewel sings about in ways no other has done. When she sings "Angel Standing By," Jewel often says that she offers this song because "we are each other's angels." The people who share this list are unique and special because we really do feel this way about each other (as well as the friends and family who support us in many different ways), and we love to show and share that sentiment. I can't think of a better outlet for both expressing and acting upon this concept than through this ever-present list of people drawn to an artist who openly, confidently, and with inspiringly beautiful talent believes in and expresses the value of and need for this type of mutual support. Of course, everyone needs this, but the EDAs enjoy a ready-made "Jewel-primed" mutual respect and support necessary (at the very least inspirational) to "energize" us to act on these principles. To single out individual EDAs would be to overlook the support and help all of us provide to one another. But, after hearing Jewel sing, getting information from a busy Alan(Mr.BB)Bershaw on Jewel's whereabouts and plans, observing Mike Connell devote countless hours to keeping our communications on course, seeing how Alan and Mike have devoted a ton of their time to getting Jewel's music out to us all, witnessing the fostering of group spirit by Dennis Harris, Mark Nessley, Liz and Shelly, Selena Martin, Tom Proven, Crash Boy and Phil Kelnhofer (to name just a few of many EDAs), hearing about the help Jewel and Lenedra have given to countless people both on and off this list (gee, John Katchur has a great guitar!), experiencing the tales of shared experiences the EDAs have had, and seeing first hand how our mutual support inspires Jewel herself, it's pretty easy to see why we're having so much fun and feeling good about it. That, in my opinion, is what makes THIS list so special. I was lucky enough to have been with Hilary, an EDA from Virginia who flew out to California 2 weeks ago to do a story on the San Diego music scene, the same weekend Jewel performed at Hospitality Point in San Diego. From Hilary's perspective just from reading our posts, she sensed an unusually supportive and nurturing music "scene" in San Diego, and I felt a pride in being able to convince her (I had to "twist her arm," in solely a configurative way) to come out here to see it for herself. Well, happily, the EDAs were able to show it to her, starting with Gregory Page and then an *All Star* Night at Java Joe's, followed by the Saturday Jewel show (for which Steve Poltz opened), and then, on Sunday, A Livingroom Tour performance at the San Juan Capistrano home of Tom and Nancy Morales, starring San Diego "divas" Elizabeth Hummel, Cindy Lee Berryhill, Lisa Sanders and Mary Dolan. Before Hilary got here, I had learned that Steve Poltz was to be Jewel's opening act that night, and I asked Steves' manager if Hilary could get an interview with Steve before the show. I was lucky to be able to arrange that and to observe that take place. Hilary got to hear Steve confirm his own love and respect for the talented musicians in the area, along with his witty take on the pehnomenon. (Look for Hilary's article in an upcoming edition of the mag "Pulp Radio," an east coast regional music publication. Then, Jewel came in to the interview and commented how thrilled she is when she learns that we are keeping an eye out for one another, such as helping our EDA Steph (the poetry grrll) get situatied in her place in Boston. As much as we like to help, Jewel has to feel good about the fact that we want to help and do so, and that we feel we are honoring her own priciples and beliefs in the process. All of that inspiration emanates from Jewel, but it is embodied in each and every one of us, and we have begun to manifest our thoughts by creating the Everyday Angels Foundation The EDAF is presently applying for tax exempt status, at which point we will soon be able to demonstrate how, as Jewel has advised us, that our "hands manifest thought," as many of us are attempting to provide a voluntary support group effort to make that happen in a fun and socially responsible way. we've already had a big impact for James Kalanick, with both money and personal attention , and there are numerous good causes that the EDAs could agree and have agreed to get behind and support, obviously with Jewel's own awareness and approval. The EDAF's next such events (after the Kalanick event) should occur near Thanksgiving dinner; big plans -- with the help of honorary EDA Java Joe - -- are being made to be of service to the needy of the area at that time. Such is my view that this is an important responsibility for each of us, not just to talk about it, but to take individual action to make it happen. It just happened to Stepahanie Kartalopoulas; she now has a supporting group seeing to her (and reporting to us) about her projects and progress. When Jewel entered the trailer where Hilary was intevierwing Steve, she specifically mentioned how great she though it was the the EDAs look out for one another (e.g., Stephanie). I know of no other internet community, much less any artist "chat list" or "fan club," that either has or routinely implements these types of beliefs. We all believe "that we might fly today,'' and we're out here getting the necessary supplies! I hope you will be in San Diego for the EDA Thanksgiving festivities!
