[Anthony Chick ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 24 Sep 1997 15:31:51 -0400 From: toweringsis@juno.com (Shelly L Curson) Subject: NJC:Frank Lee Drennen benefit/EDA's Hi Angels- Frank Drennen, the San Diego artist who I raved about a couple days ago, just called me to find out how to get the EDA's involved in a benefit concert. See, a few weeks ago, Frank was rushed to the ER to have emergency appendectamy surgery. Well, not only did he have his appendix removed, the doctor's had to take out portions of his large and small intestine because the infection was so severe. He spent almost 2 weeks in the hospital and is back home now, slowly recovering. I talked to him a couple days after he returned home and asked him if he had a lot of visitors while he was in the hospital. He said that the response was so incredible, that they had to start turning people away because the hospital staff was getting angry. Hence, Frank is a very respected musician and has a lot of people who care about him. In fact, his musician friends including: Elizabeth Hummel, Cindy Lee Berryhill, Lisa Sanders, Gregory Page, Steve Poltz, etc.. have decided to hold a benefit concert for him to help raise money for his hospital bills. He has no insurance, and received his first bill today from just the actual stay in the hospital, not including the surgery, and lets just say that you could purchase two really nice cars for that amount of money. Yikes!! So here's where we come in... well first I should say that Frank is feeling really weird about the whole benefit thing, he feels honored, but he doesn't feel like he deserves all the support that he is receiving. Just imagine yourself in his shoes, that would be kinda weird huh? But anyways, his manager Lisa, called him this morning and asked how she could get the EDA's involved in the benefit because she has heard of us and thinks we are an incredible group of people. Frank has immense respect for us also, along with a lot of other SD artists, you'd be surprised! So, Frank called me, asked what he should do, so I told him not to worry, that I would post something to the list, and I also gave him Larry's number so his manager could call him. We all know that Larry is such an awesome planner that I figured he'd be the man to ask. I won't be in Cali yet, so there is only so much I can do. In fact, Frank may actually be travelling across the country in my car with me while the benefit is happening. As far as Frank knew, the benefit is at Java Joe's on October 3, and may possibly continue on through the 4th and 5th. I will let Larry post the confirmed info after he talks to Lisa. So all you west-coasters, you should definitely try to attend! It will be great publicity for us considering we were personally asked to be a part of it, it's for a great cause, and not to mention the amazing artists that will be performing! There will be a second benefit concert on Oct. 17th for Frank, and to also help raise awareness about health insurance opportunities. It's being sponsored by a couple insurance companies who provide "cheap" insurance for those who don't think they can afford it. But here's the coolest thing. Leah Andreone will be performing. She is a wonderful musician, her latest album is Veiled and her hit song off of it for those of you who aren't sure who she is, is called "It's Alright, It's OK". She's a friend of Frank's and he absolutely adores her. Also on the bill for that night will be Steve Poltz, Lisa Sanders, and Gregory Page for sure. OK, this is too long, and I don't want to piss anyone off, but just one more thing.. If anyone is interested in getting ahold of Loam's album, let me know. Frank said he will put together a special EDA package and include a tape and bunch of background info about the band. He really wants to do a Living Room Tour like I said before, and he would really like the EDA's to hear what he and his band have to offer. So privately e-mail me if you're interested and I'll let you know how to get ahold of a tape. Towerinsis@aol.com Toweringsis@juno.com Thanks for listening! If I want to know why she is not at home, then I am going to email privately, because maybe it is not a public matter. I really hope this doesn't make anyone angry. It gets much louder and brighter in the middle of >"Sometimes It Be That Way." Then it is pretty much OK for the rest of the >tape, although there are some muffled spots. >Is it just my copy? Or is it that way on all copies? The Paradise tape is one of the CLEANEST, most consistent tapes you will ever see treed. If there is distortion on it, it is the fault of too many generations of copying, or more likely the victim of the CRIME of HIGH SPEED DUBBING! NEVER NEVER NEVER high speed dub angelfood. It hastens the demise of the sound quality, and even though your copy sounds "okay", the next angel in line gets screwed with lesser quality. And for this particular tape, that is a crime! If you don't have the time to dub properly, in real time, on a decent deck and on a decent quality tape, please don't even bother -- it ends up shorting a lot of EDAs down the road, like our friend Bob here. Worse yet, you unleash a lineage of Jewel tapes that bastardize all the time and effort that went into producing a professional sounding tape in the first place. All it takes is one well-intentioned person to produce these mutant offspring tapes. But like they say, the road to hell is paved with good intentions! One last word on the Paradise tape -- in my opinion, it is the absolute best single live performance Jewel tape available (both from a set list and technical standpoint). It is certainly better than the scumball bootleg CD of the same show released several months back. In fact, we increased our distribution of this superior recording to cut back on their thieving sales! So, as I find myself having to say every six months or so -- NEVER HIGH SPEED DUB UNLESS YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT THE NEXT GUY IN LINE (and you don't belong here if that's the case)... If you've done it before cause you didn't know any better, well, now you do! :-) Take care, angels.
