What's next? Dear EDA's, I like the song, "Foolish Games", but I didn't expect it to become a #1 song. If you look at it from Atlantic Records' view, I think it would be tough to pass up releasing another single from POY. If FG can become #1, then I think "Angel Standing By" and "I'm Sensitive" could easily become top 5, if not #1's as well. So, in my opinion, a push for another single release could be in the making. Jewel has said that she would say "no" to a fourth single, but times change, and your mind set can change, and just maybe, Jewel's creative force has thought of a video idea for one of her POY songs. This album (POY) seems like a live creature to me, that has blossomed into adulthood, and maybe it has more living to do. Anyways, my budget is about $150, take or give $30 or so.. I am wondering what other people recommened for a dual tape deck. I am already fairly familiar with the terminology, but I would like to have some feedback or suggestions from people who have tried and compared a few different models / brands and prefer one over the others. For the purpose of keeping things simple for me, please don't give advice just because you have a certain model.. I need some genuine supported advice. And of course, this tape deck will eventually be used to copy Angelfood, so any help I get from those "in the know" on cassette decks is greatly appreciated and will directly go back into benefitting the EDA's.. Having seen Cindy before, heard the FF tapes (repeatedly ;) ) and generally preferring the stripped-down sound of the her older stuff (the fuller sound of her more recent work is growing on me, but WGStW remains my favorite), I was fully prepared to be blissfully enthralled by her performance. What I didn't anticipate was the grace, subtlty, and beauty of Joy's voice. Don't know if it was the atmosphere, the lack of accompaniment (right down to the a capella numbers), or just growth in the years since AT came out, but Wow! And I still can't get the chorus of "Graveyards" out of my head... Their new stuff was definately a treat - can't wait to see what their respective next albums are like. Sounds like Cindy Lee will be doing background vocals on at least one song ("Popcicle Town") on Joy's album - should sound great as their voices harmonize quite well. But an even bigger treat was a bit of reminiscing they did, with Cindy Lee digging out "Television", The Stoopids' hit that never was and Joy calling forth (with some difficulty) a song she wrote just as she was learning to play - "Me, Myself, and I", hinting at a wonderful song hiding beneath years of rust. IMHO, Joy would do very well to polish it back up, sand down the rough edge or two and NEVER forget it again. Also very notable was Cindy's wonderful cover of "Take a Giant Step". Strange how you can be so used to hearing a song, you never really listen to it until it is presented somehow differently. Good to meet you Jon - sorry things got going so late that you had to leave in the middle. 8( As for all you other midwesterners... well, all I can say is you were missed. Can't really blame you as the situation was not overly conducive to travel, being on a Sunday night (with the school year having started again, no less), in a "backup" living room that wasn't confirmed until 36 hours beforehand, and starting at a time I was still having to guestimate hours before it started. In short, great performances by a pair of gracious, very gifted, and exceedingly professional artists under circumstances (one very much in particular...) I wish could have been different. The house turned out great, though, and I sincerely thank Carrie for pulling my butt out of the fire, offering her home to what, by and large, were complete strangers. Concert ended a bit before midnight, but most everyone stood around chatting for a good half hour about various aspects of San Diego, Chicago, and St. Louis - people, attitudes, winter (hope Joy takes a liking to -40 degree winds and snow on the ground for a third of the year or you lucky San Diegans might be in store for a homecoming), city structure and architecture, you name it. Even with all the difficulties setting it up and the late start time it was worth it (for me, anyway, I hope all those in attendance, including Cindy and Joy, can say the same). Attendance: 10, EDAs: 2. Springfield, IL 9/15 - -------------------- After packing up, Cindy Lee and Joy loaded up on caffine and brownies and decided to head towards Springfield to remove the variable of travel and traffic the following morning as the concert was scheduled for 11AM. I, on the other hand, opted for sleep. ;) After a half hour drive home, it didn't amount to much, mind you, but it was sleep. Up at 6:30 to get ready to head to Springfield. Like Willis mentioned, it was at Lincoln Land Community College and took place in the cafeteria at lunch time as part of the school's entertainment series. Cindy Lee and Joy played "plugged-in" sets - it was a curiously designed cavernous space that seemed to sound better the further you were from the stage... Not too surprisingly, by and large the crowd was there for other reasons, though. With the turnover of people coming and going over the course of 2 hours there were periods with attentive, courteous-to-appreciative groups and others where most everyone was oblivious to their surroundings. Again, Cindy's and Joy's professionalism shone through. Nearly 4 hours of performance and 100 miles of travel within a 14 hour span. This is getting long, and lest I just find myself repeating superlatives, (not to imply the shows were at all identical or indistinguishable - quite the opposite with only a handful of overlapping songs) I'll only say that I'm not in the least bit sorry I made the trip. Oh, and that was certainly the most, umm, interesting ending of "Jane & John" I've ever heard... Attendance varied: 10 to 75+ (not counting cafeteria employees and those with offices nearby), EDAs: 2 (nice to meet you as well, Willis, hope you're giving that disc a workout. ;) ) The only slight musical disappointment over the two days was to find out "Me, Steve, Kirk, and Keith" has fallen into disuse. It and "Old Trombone Routine", more than the others, kept me coming back to Naked Movie Star until the rest fell into place which, in turn, led to seeking out Who's Gonna Save the World (which didn't leave my player for weeks). Old Trombone Routine would have been hard to pull off in this environment, but M,S,K,aK is perfect for it, IMHO. Can't expect everything to be played, though. ;) A final note... post-show talk in Springfield fell to the list for a bit. As many know I'm sure, Cindy Lee's influences come from, though perhaps not every band (no pun intended) of the musical spectrum, certainly a very diverse selection. She thought the diversity of musical interests and backgrounds here (from popsters, to folkies, to metalheads, to alternapups (sorry - my use of broad, cliched generalizations here is for brevity, artists were mentioned by name)) was terrific. However, she also asked what recent topics were and, for the life of me, the only thread that came to mind was the disgraceful bantering back and forth over Madonna (in my defense, let me say that I was going on 4.5 hours sleep and hadn't eaten in 30 hours (no, I wasn't *too* stressed that weekend...). Having just impressed her with the coolness of the backgrounds of the list's populace, I'm afraid that put a less-than-glowing light over the list. 8( Just yet another reason to think before you post (and to consider imposing a 12 hour block between write and post - it's amazing how much becomes irrelevant after a good night's sleep). I know I personally have to have written (and ultimately discarded) at least 5 potential posts for every one that I went ahead and sent... It's cliche, but first impressions are important. The list gets new subscribers every day - before you post, consider that yours might be the first one somebody reads. Also consider that we've been nicely asked to cut down on the volume again. With the amount of information required to get mail from one place to another, 5 1-line posts are roughly 5 times as "costly" (in terms of server strain and bandwidth use) as a single 5 line post. Hmm. That got alot more soapboxxy than it was going to be - but when the Gians of the list are still being driven away, it's time for some reminding. bob ps. If I might make a suggestion: though her newer stuff is a departure, either of Brenda Kahn's Sony releases, "Epiphany in Brooklyn" and "Goldfish Don't Talk Back" would be well worth tracking down for any fans of Cindy's "anti-folk" material (and you don't want to hear how bad Sony screwed her over in the process of dropping her). Oh, and if you find an extra copy of "Goldfish Don't Talk Back" around, think of me... 8) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 Sep 1997 11:08:27 -0400 (EDT) From: SouIChick@aol.com Subject: Re: Lyrics to Kiss Your Ass In a message dated 97-09-19 19:04:18 EDT, you write: > drugs should i take tonight to make me seem like i'm introverted i believe this is "truck.."
