Subject: Absolutely NJC (<-did it myself this time): Re: guitar players please read Okay, I might be out of line in saying what I'm going to say here, but I feel like it and that hasn't stopped me before (*grin*). A lot of the people on this list have been expressing their view that it is better to start learning on an acoustic than on an electric, which is perfectly fine. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions on the matter, mine being that it doesn't really make much difference, but that in the case of the person who wrote the original post, she said that she already owned an electric, so I saw no reason to push her to buy an acoustic. What is irritating me, though, is the apparent perception that the people who have responded on this subject have on electric players. I have seen far too many times things like "Well, on an electric, it's much easier to cover up mistakes" or "Yeah, my friend can shred on an electric but he can't do much on an acoustic" or "Add a little distortion and you can just pretend to sound fast" etc. I think that posts like that are giving the other people on this list a very poor misconception of electric players, and as one myself, I feel very offended. Yes there are plenty of electric players who can't play half-passably on an acoustic, but at the same time, I've seen lots of acoustic players who can't control the dynamics of an electric. Electric guitars give you an incredible palette of sounds to work with. Controlling them is a challenge, and very much a skill (just ask Sarah McLachlan, or more easily, read the liner notes from the Freedom Sessions involving that album's version of "Ice"). And sure, some guitarists may use distortion or whatnot to cover up a lack of skill otherwise, but there are even more who actually have the skill behind the "noise." Ever hear of a guy named Eddie Van Halen? Or Joe Satriani? Or John McLaughlin? Or Al DiMeola? And as far as the last two, how about jazz players? Lots of them play electric. Why? We know that most of them can play acoustic extremely well (the two mentioned being prime examples). Maybe they want things that an acoustic can't give them. Sounds, options, freedom. I started seriously playing on an electric because of two guys, one named Kirk Hammet, and the other named Slash. I've quite changed since then, but that's what gave me the impulse to play. Then, as I got better, I picked up an acoustic (strung up with 13 gauge "telephone cables") and actually didn't find it that hard to play. What I found difficult were things like barre chords, but then I found that they don't sound to good on acoustics. Maybe that's part of Dave Matthews' whole approach (damn original player IMHO). But playing jazz licks and such (I'm a probable Jazz Guitar major at my school)? No problem at all. Actually quite a nice attack on arpeggios and such. But I primarily stick to electric, simply because I love to play funk-jazz and fusion, and those don't sound too great acoustic. There's plenty of acoustic stuff that can be played perfectly well on electric, but it's extremely hard to copy a lot of electric stuff on an acoustic and have it sound right. You can certainly play it, but it won't necessarily sound right. Not as much of a problem with electrics playing acoustic songs (disagree? There's a man named Trey Anastasio in this band called Phish who I think you should speak to). Plus, especially if you're an electric player, it's just a damn pain to switch guitars. I think that's it for now. I'll say more if people respond to my latest batch of rantings. - -Wayan! I don't have excactly how many people, but I know it is a whole lot of people are going to the Jewel concert at Hospitality Point on Saturday. Some of us are going to Java Joe's on Friday also. We'll probably come back home Friday night because we have to look after our puppies but if you go to Java Joe's on Friday you can stay in La Costa with Larry and others who are all hanging at Nancy's parent's house. Then you'll be ready for Saturday activities. If you're up for getting started early Crazy Lora is having a gathering in Ocean Beach just blocks from Java Joe's. Then you can meet at Java Joe's at 4:00 P.M. where Sinjin will lead us to the concert. After the concert people can head back to Ocean Beach to see if Lora's beach party is still going on or follow us back up to La Costa where we can hang out and crash for the night. Then for Sunday we can head up to Capistrano Beach to our house for the Living Room Tour, starring Lisa Sanders, Elizabeth Hummel, and Cindy Lee Berryhill. We plan to start around 4 or 5 but the ladies might be running a little late. That's okay because Mark will be there with his mandolin and maybe Erick G. will show with his guitar and Angel from Ventura might show with a guitar. So we will be thoroughly entertained while waiting for the ladies to show. Donations of $10 would be nice so the ladies can have a little pocket money for their drive home. $10 dollars will get you a whole lot of music, pizza, soft drinks and my special sangria mixture made specially with the Hot Dog Fest wine given to us by Dennis Harris. Here are the directions. If you are going to the concert find me and I'll have maps handy. Take the 5 freeway to Capistrano Beach, which is in between San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano. It's one hour either from San Diego or Los Angeles. Get off Camino De Estrella. From the north turn left over the bridge, from the south turn right. Just passed the Unocal, at the light turn left on to El Molino. Go about half a mile to the second stop sign and turn left on to Calle Juanita. Go passed the next stop sign and Sunset park on your right and then turn left on to Calle Carmelita. The street sign may be obscured but it isn't to far from here. Go about 100 yards to a blue house on your right. A blue pickup, a green Explorer and a maroon jeep will all be in front of our little blue house. 34445 Calle Carmelita Capistrano Beach,CA 714 443-3623 Hope you all can make it. It should be lots of fun. As you know, she recieves a ridiculous amount of gifts from fans. She has requested that you NOT send or give her gifts. Knowing her feelings on this, if you still feel compelled to give a gift, she requests that you give the gift to someone else in both her & your name instead.
