I have been involved in listservs for over 15 years, and I do appreciate the ettiquette of lurking before posting, but how can I hold back on some things when I saw Jewel Saturday night at the Toledo Zoo Amphatheater. I have been to many cocerts in my lifetime, but none quite like this. I almost feel guilty for being able to get late released seats that I thought would be in the back, but ended up being folding chairs 15 rows in front of the stage. Think about what memories will last when I was greeted on my way to the concet by walking past the African Wild Dog area, where these frightened, yet dangerous dogs were just the other side of a chain link fence. I joked with the person I was with about this, like if we misbehaved would they sic the dogs on us? Anyway... I will never understand how some people could go tro any event, from a football game to a classical concert, and still have to get completely trashed even before the show starts. I enjoyed a beer before the concert, but not to excess, and not having to leave every 20 minutes to pee or get a beer, missing the flow of the show. Anyway my comments could go on forever, but without hopefully drawing too much personal attack, I read many people's reviews with interest, but I had a problem with some concepts, like feeling her power and passion, and various concepts about some magical being one with Jewel, like she was singing just to you (Ok I don't know if anyone said this, but I get this feeling) My impressions were disgust at first, when the opening singer would yell half the time into mic levels that were set for normal singing. I got a headache from listening to the bad sound mixing, or the artist singing too wide a range (which is strange for Jewel's range) It took me awhile to settle down, but I was surprised by the Jewel performance. I am a dj at our college station here (WXUT 88.3 FM Toledo) and we had the Pieces of You CD when it first came out on promotional copy. I played songs from there almost 3 years ago, and I thought this was one of many short lived singers that a college radio station gets bombarded with. All my preconceived notions were thrown out by a genuine, funny, and entertaining concert, even kicking myself when Jewel said, " You are hearing some really rare stuff, I hope you guys are bootlegging!" She held me spellbound with the passion in her voice. I could feel the emotion she had as she sang. I was deeply touched by this and felt somewhat meloncholy the next day. The same songs I have listened to for the last 2 years, all of a sudden have new meaning and a new feel to them. This inspired me to write a song about this experience and I can only hope that someday she will hear it and know that she has made a difference in my life. Jewel is truly a modern day Angel that has had a positive impact on so many peoples lives. I had this confirmed when I played "you were meant for me " at a party and these 4 little girls age 6-9 sang the chorus like 4 little angels, another moment I will not forget.
