I picked this up off of the Chart Beat Chat section of Billboard's Website, and thought everyone would be interested since we had spoken of the FG single commercially... here we go... - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ - --------------------------------------------- Fred, I noticed that "Foolish Games" by Jewel is available as the B-side of "You Were Meant For Me," and since "Foolish Games" is receiving a lot of airplay, I was wondering why this hasn't become a two-sided hit. And what exactly is a "sales flip"? How do you determine which song the consumer is actually buying? Thanks. Rick Thompson Dear Rick, Thanks to your e-mail and letters from other readers, "Foolish Games" is no longer the B-side of the Jewel single. I passed along your e-mail as well as the other letters I received on the subject to Theda Sandiford-Waller of our Charts Department in New York. Theda is the manager of the Hot 100, and here is her reply: "I am pleased to know that I can rely upon Billboard readers to pay close attention to minute details on the Hot 100, because if it wasn't for you I would have never remembered that Jewel's "Foolish Games" is the B-side to "You Were Meant For Me." After more than 40 weeks on the chart, even the singles specialists at Atlantic Records, with whom I speak every week, forgot! Effective with the Sept. 13 issue of Billboard, the Jewel single will be changed to relfect its "double A-side" status. It will be listed as 'Foolish Games' / 'You Were Meant For Me.' Thanks a lot for your help." And thanks to Theda for her reply. For all of those people who wrote and for Jewel fans everywhere, there's more good news. Jewel's single rebounds in its 42nd chart week, moving 25-12. "You Were Meant For Me" originally peaked at No. 2. Back to Rick's e-mail for a moment, Billboard doesn't determine which song a consumer is buying because it's not practical to ask each record buyer which title they are buying. Two-sided hits are determined by airplay. The Hot 100 is determined by combining sales data with airplay information. Both sides of a two-sided hit have the same number of sales points, but will have different airplay point totals depending on how much airplay each side is receiving. And speaking of airplay, there's more e-mail on that subject: - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ - --------------------------------------------- So, with this news it seems that with combined airplay of YWMFM & FG and the sales of the single, Jewel could maybe get her first #1 single, but that's probably too much to ask... She was already #2 with the same single, so close... hehe... - --Lisa-- **Warrior Princess Angel** ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Sep 1997 16:49:16 -0300 (ADT) From: Chris Thomas Subject: Re: Puffy Combs and Sting tonight... Hello to all, This week has been very sad with the passing of two great women and my heart goes out to all who knew them and all who loved and or respected them. I am also happy for Jewel and glad she won an award. I have a question about taping I have heard many different things on this and I want to be sure exactly what the policy is. I will be going to the benefit show in San Diego and I would like to tape using DAT and was really wondering if I can patch into the soundboard or if I have to use my own mics. If I can tape I will be happy to circulate the tapes I get to this list. Ray, I have to disagree on some things here. #1 I was at Monday's show and I was able to tape it form the 10th row with my DAT deck. #2 If you get caught they CAN and WILL take your tapes & batteries. The legally can not, but you already broke a law by taping with out permission. And since "2 wrongs do not make a right" you just end up letting them take the tapes/etc and going your merry way #3 The venues do not set the policy (they get stuck enforcing it) the bands do. #4 Most venues do check for weapons, drugs, etc. the taping thing is secondary to weapons etc. And if there is a will there is a way. I have been stealth taping (hiding my equipment) for over 10 years and I have never been caught going through security and that includes metal detectors. #5 [lastly] as far as the crowd noise goes, there is nothing that you can do. If you ask someone to be quiet they generally do the opposite. The only way that I have seen that works is offering the people around you to be quiet by giving them free copies of the show (if taping is allowed or they might turn you in) or offering them (which I do not endorse, but I have seen it work for others) free drugs and beer. I welcome comments but if you plan to flame me, save it and just be mature. Several days ago, someone mentioned letterbombing Atlantic with e-mail demanding them to release Jewel's second album. This got the wheels in my head turning. Obviously demanding ANYTHING from Atlantic probably wouldn't do any good, but I have a better idea. I'm sure there are some Sarah M. fans on here. Do you guys remember her releasing a CD last year called "Rarities, B-Sides, and Other Stuff"? It was, as the names says, an album of rare songs, non-lp tracks, and soundtrack songs. Wouldn't something like this be PERFECT for Jewel to release? I mean, from what I've read, there must be something like 500 non POY songs floating around out there. They could easily choose 15 songs and put them on a special release CD. Anyone else think this is a good idea? I've only been on the list a week so I don't know if it has been suggested before. Good rendition of it too. I personally hope it wasn't about Princess Di but even if it was at least Jewel didn't feel the need to demean the woman by saying that. The rest of the show basically sucked. She didn't deserve to win anything it's not a good video and not a good song but I was kinda excited to see her win because I figured she would say something really cool in her time like Fiona Apple did except that Fiona was really pretentious, but Jewel was very classy just thanking who needed to be thanked and summing things up nicely about the whole show in the simple phrase, This is silly. The rest of the show like I said, sucked. The Spice Girls, did they really attempt to demean and denegrate Diana's death or are they just stupid sluts who did that by accident? Marilyn Manson didn't shock anybody. Prodigy??? whatever. The jokes were lame and unfunny except for Chris Rock and his opening monologue where he used a lot of honesty, good job Chris. Also of positive note was Sting doing the real version of that song at least for a while Puffy gesticulated like a monkey in the background. Bruce and the Wallflowers, obviously key, but they shouldnt have announced Bruce's surprise appearance ahead of time. And Jamiroquai was kinda cool, that is a great video regardless of his musical talent. And surprisingly, LL Cool J gave a passionate and empowered speech, very intelligent and well thought out, hopefully he actually wrote it himself. Well that's all. WAY TO GO JEWEL, for playing a non-hit song I mean, I couldn't care less about a meaningless MTV trophy and I am sure she concurs. I have a favor to ask of you: I have been trying to track down a high quality copy of Jewel's show earlier this year at SUNY Geneseo in New York. I am asking because I attended college there and the show would have great sentimental value to me. I know that the show was recorded on DAT and that there are high quality COMPLETE copies out there. If anyone out there has a DAT and would be willing to spin analogs for me, I'd provide blanks, postage, or other artists material in trade. I know that there is some concern about people selling Jewel's material, so I hereby declare that if anyone can help me out, I will not even trade a copy of this show. Please help!
