She was asked to perform Foolish Games but decided on singing Angel Standing By, instead, which was a good decision. That performance, to me, was her best one of Angel Standing By! And what I loved most about it was it just her and her guitar. That's how she got to where she is right now, and I'm glad she didn't do anything fancy. Just pure heart and emotion... I still think Jewel should have won for Viewer's Choice. I messed up a bit with what I was trying to do. I didn't know some things that I should have known, and I started too late. :( This may have been our last chance to help her win an award like this, unless she gets nominated again next year. I hope so, and next time I won't make the same mistakes. I would like to thank everyone who helped me, and say sorry for screwing up. Was it me, or did anyone else notice someone yelling out, "I Love You Jewel!" when they were presenting the Best Rap Video? Because I'm on the west coast, the show didn't air until 3 hours after it really started. So it wasn't really live for us here. They also did some re-editing, taking out the cussing. I hate it when they do that. I think one of the most memorable parts of the show was Marilyn Manson. I've never seen him perform live before, and I don't think I will ever want to again either. BTW, what did he say when he said, "Do you want to be in a place with a bunch of ____?!?" (reply privately, please). I didn't like Chris Rock that much. He makes too many black and white jokes and it gets old so fast when he says them. He also likes to make jokes at other people just to get a few laughs. I would also like to say congratulations to the Philippines' "Eraserheads", who won Viewer's Choice for Asia! Someone mentioned them before, and if that person could e-mail me, I would like to know more about them. Anyways, those are just my views of the show. I hope what Chris Rock said about the music industry is wrong when it comes to Jewel, and that she gets nominated again for something next year. :) PS--new sig, same quote! :) __________________________________________________________________ (` + + | _ +| Inside my heart there's an empty room. _)|)(||`|<_\ +| It's waiting for lightning; it's waiting for you. + | mark + + | -=Jewel "Absence of Fear"=- __________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Sep 1997 00:26:28 -0700 From: BenFrancis@webtv.net (Ben Simpelo) Subject: MTV Video Music Awards Well, another MTV Video Music Awards has gone by, and a big CONGRADULATIONS to Jewel for winning Best Female Video. I was sort of bummed that she lost to Jamiroquai for Video of the Year. I was surprised they won in this category, and I believe this would give their career a big boost. As for the Viewer's Choice Award, Jewel lost to Prodigy, as most of us expected. But hey, we did our very best casting our votes for her. And her performance of Angel Standing By is really AMAZING!! Another thing, I think I saw her French-Canadian boyfriend, am I correct or is it someone else? Again, congradulations to Jewel, I hope I will see her on September 20 at Hospitality Point in San Diego. (Tickets go on sale Saturday at 10AM). Good night, Ben BTW, I want to say good luck to the cities of Athens, Buenos Aires, Cape Town, Rome and Stockholm, because on Friday, the IOC will announce which one of these cities will host the Summer Olympic Games in 2004. Good luck and good night again. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Sep 1997 01:13:20 -0700 From: henry.park@juno.com (Henry S Park) Subject: Re: Jewel on MTV Video Awards ~~ c l i p ~~~~~ c l i p ~~~~~~~ >But then again, they didn't do anything about Merylin >Manson. >For a final note, how could Prodigy win? You can have your opinions and that's cool, but all it does when someone bashes another artist is to create a HUGE Thread and argument among fans of that artist and non-fans... Well, since everyone is offering up their opinions of the show, I guess I should give the perspective of a lame "Newbie". ;) Chris Rock did a so-so job as host, his opening monologue probably being his shinging moment of the evening. Were the Spice Girls fighting for their lives or what?! Just goes to show 'em that they HAVEN'T taken over the country yet! :) Someone earlier mentioned that this was a sad award show, well, I think MTV gave proper respect to everyone who had passed away recently and that was weighing heavily on a lot of people's thoughts. The only words I caught of Jewel's intro to ASB was "mercy" and "understanding". AMAZING performance! "Wow." is a word that comes to mind. I'm glad she did this one isntead because she did FG at the Movie Awards (already added to my tape). This is getting too long so I'll close by saying that I was disappointed Jewel didn't get the VC award; DOUBLY so after I saw Prodigy's PATHETIC acceptance speech (if you could call it that; was it just me or did they look like they could give a rat's patooty about that award?). But it's over and done with. At least she won the Best Female category. Of course we didn't need to see her get an award to know she was the Best Female Artist! :) I've taken up enough of your hard drive! WOOF!! SEND ME ANGEL FOOD! David ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 05 Sep 97 22:26:39 GMT From: st_kuo@ix.netcom.com Subject: The Magnificent Jewel Just watched the MTV Video Music Award (I taped the show while I was away) and I was totally blown away by her passionate acoustic performance of "Angel Standing By". I was both surprised and pleased when I heard Jewel explained that she decided to play "Angel.." instead of "Foolish Games", no doubt a suggestion proposed by the marketing execs from AR, who hoped that she would further promote her latest single (like she hasn't done enough already). When she was singing "Angel Standing By", my hairs stood on ends and I get goosebumps all over. I have the feeling that she sang that song because she wanted to dedicate it in the memory of Princess Di (which is particularly on everyone's mind tonite), even though she did not mention her tragic death when she explained the song to the audience. Kudos to Jewel for standing up for what she believes in to be the right decision and not let other "professionals" dictate her every move. Jewel gave the finest performance tonite at the VMA (she performed first, to boot! :) and I believe that she truly earned the respect from everyone present at the award show. Oh yeah, congrats to Jewel for winning Best Female Video award! (it's too bad about Viewer's Choice...oh well. We tried, anyway). What an experciencce it has = been and I'd love to share it with you guys. My day started out quite a bit challenging as I was attempting to straighten up my schedule for this fal= l semester. It was a lot worse yesterday, as I walked up and down the camp= us looking for professors and staff for approvals and permits. It is alread= y frustrating as it is starting school but to find conflict in your schedul= e is just too much. Enough about this. Went home around noon and got some zz= zz's that I lost waking up early. Then I had problems ( a small misunderstand= ing ) with a PRESHUS friend of mine. < MICHELLE, I am sorry. I didn't know. We'll work this out. You and I have gone through a lot worse and we'll = get through this one together. I'll call you as soon as you get home from school. Believe me when I say we are doing a lot of growing up in a shor= t time. All the while we have managed to constantly move forward, always having faith in one another. > The worse came when uninvited friends cam= e over to crash a small gathering to watch the MTV Music Video Awards. I didn't want a small gathering to turn into a big party. You know how it goes, as word spreads around. Anyway, that's the short version. The lon= g would consist of my ex-best friend and I almost getting into a fight over= the fact that he brought along people without telling me. By the way, who is also the same person who stole a girl I truely care about about from my heart. And I ended up watching the MTV-MVA alone, I was in no mood for a party or gathering now. But as soon as Jewel started singing "Angel Standing By" all my worries a= nd troubles disappeared. It felt as if I was 'touched by an angel' as her angelic voice fused melodies together. I was extremely anxious and excit= ed to see Jewel perform and win an award ( as she did, Best Female Video ). Hey, did anybody felt snobbed when she never mentioned the EDA's. I was= so sure she'd mention us at the very last end. Its kewl though. She is sti= ll great and always will be. I guess we didn't do enough voting to get her = that VCA, though the important thing is she was recognized by MTV. ( Prodigy proudly deserved that damn award anyway. That was a huge crowd they were performing for in England, < for all of those bitchin about voting and helping Jewel win > surely, we could not have been able to compete agains= t that. Or could we? Next year, rite. ) Fiona Apple's acceptance speech a= lso brought up something very important. Wasn't she so deep? That is, rathe= r than modeling one's life after celebraties and famous people, we all shou= ld enchance our originality. Our self expression and indivuality. We are a= ll unique yet so alike. Then why in the hell are we disrespecting each othe= r. CAN'T WE ALL JUZ GET ALONG. Highlights:=20 5. ) Puffy and Sting, what a wonderful performance. 4. ) I gotta say this and all... the Spice Girls are so friggin' fine. 3. ) Ms. Apple could not have been anymore perfect than she was tonight. 2. ) Jewel was more beautiful than ever. If she just looked liked that= in Lilith, I think my heart would have just melted right ont he spot. Can't wait for the ne= xt CD. 1. ) On most occasions, Jewel would be the one sitting on the top. But since U2 was present, I'll give them the number one. Plus, the song they= did was the one I couldn't hear at the Colliseum last June as a part of their opening set. Was it just me or did anyone felt like they were in Arizona watching U2 perform "Sunday Bloody Sunday." Larry was playing samples fr= om that song. They just rock. Whoa, Adam Clayton in the same building with Naomi... think she's with that Jemeroqoie (sp?) guy. LOWLIGHTS: 5. ) Wuzzzup wit Chris Rock's black n' white jokes... they died a long t= ime ago. It really got boring after Jewel sang. 4. ) When Fiona came out with Chris Tucker... to give the winners of oth= er VCA... that was just so lame. Most of the night sucked anyway. Much pro= pz to Eraserhead back in the PI for winning the Asia VCA. 3. ) Marilyn[Monroe] [Charles]Manson need I say more. Was that a g-stri= ng dat dude was wearing. Anybody for Ozzfest anytime soon. Think not!!! 2. ) I jus wanna know where's da respect n' recognition 4 Easy-E and M.C. Hammer. Hammer brought rap into ebry white household in America and da r= est of the world. And wut happened all the gangster rap artist jump on him. = If it wasn't for da guy, rap would never have become mainstream. And tell m= e would there be a Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, 2Live Crew or any1 frum da east ( including Puffy or Biggie ). He paved the way for gangster rap wit da kreation of N.W.A. Wut can I say I luv da eighties ( esp. 80's rock, Poi= son, Def Leppard, Skid Row, etc. - watch out for Motley Crue, they're baaaack!= !! ) and watched rap grow from a black thing to hiphop that any1 can associate. 1. ) Its so sad... < JESSICA a.k.a. PiscesJess, this is for you, you Foo Fighter maniac > Pat Smear is no longer with the band. It was like the d= ay Soundgarden broke up. They'll never be the same again. Though I want to mention that they brought the house down earlier. Juz one question, did their stage looked bigger than what NO Doubt had last year. Two more things, everybody gotta get their asses off the freakin' chair a= nd pack their bags and head for England. I mean juz how may Britz were ther= e at the MVA. Almost every performer or winner was British, at least the ones that got up to the stage. And what about them Alternative bands winning = most of the awards. Kay I'm done rambling on and on.
