Okay, this one's going to be short (my gooodness, a short post by Wayan? Never!). Anyway, I can't remember where I read this, but I'm pretty sure it was in the issue of Rolling Stone that came out around when Sheryl's new album came out with her on the cover. The story explained that there is apparently a great deal of bitterness between Sheryl and the Tuesday Night Music Club players, including one David Baerwald. They feel that they didn't get enough credit or recognition for their work on the album, especially since she didn't bring them to tour with her, and the general sentiment is that she "stole" the songs from the TNMC players. That explains the whole David sying that Sheryl stole the songs he does from him. Hope that helped clear things up a bit. - -Wayan! the bitter angel =o) ************************************************* *"What do you mean my credit's no good?!!"* * -Living Colour "Glamour Boys" * ************************************************* ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 4 Sep 1997 17:09:37 -0400 From: shallowend@asan.com Subject: Tara NYC show Hi Everyone Ok here's what's going on. Ok for those of you that are not going to Steve's, we are going to be meeting up in front of Sam Goody's between 5:30-6:00, I should have the card so if you want to sign get there early and meet up with me. I recomend taking the A, C, or E trains to the west 4th street staion they leyt you out right bye the store. If you are coming from LI, take the LIRR to penn staion, then take the A train downtown to west 4th street. Most of you may already know this, but since I haven't seen even one post about it today, I just wanted to let everyone know that Jewel is going to be a presenter tonight on the MTV Video Music Awards. It starts at 8:00 EST. She's not performing, just presenting. She's also nominated in 3 categories. Derrick ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Sep 1997 15:30:33 -0700 From: "Adrian du Plessis" Subject: Jewel's current opening act and the attacks on Sheryl Crow Hi all: I agree that it's not nice to slam other artists -- and when it comes to subjective matters like musical styles etc. I would never criticise anyone as it's personal preferences. The situation with Dave Baerwald isn't about music in my view. It has to do with nasty, vicious attacks made on Sheryl Crow by a group of people -- that was exposed in Billboard magazine. If any of the Stray Gators (who played on Pieces of You) were to get up on stage and say that Jewel stole Foolish Games or Who Will Save Your Soul from them, it would make about as much sense -- added to all the hurt that Sheryl Crow had to endure prior to that. It's testament to her character that she prevailed and is even more popular and respected despite the "He-Man Woman-Haters Club" who set out to destroy her character. (It's been pointed out that this list isn't the place for lengthy articles on non-Jewel artists -- so if anyone wants to read the Billboard article, in two parts, e-mail me privately at howenow@imagen.net ) As Jewel sings, "It doesn't take a talent to be mean." Hey Angels, Today my friend brought me the October/November issue of Twist Magazine. It's like a teen magazine, neither of us had heard of it before. On page 18 is "25 Things You've Never Heard About Jewel" It has the full page pic of the one where she's laying on the orange couch playing with her shirt. I knew most of it, some things were told differently than I had heard before. But I didn't know #8, it says Jewel was home-schooled until the fourth grade. I also didn't know #12, it says at Interlochen, she had the lead in a play called Spoon River Anthology. Her part was a dead woman who tells tales from her gravestone. There was lots of mentions of the EDAs!! Here are some: #22 Last May, her unofficial fan club-the EveryDay Angels (EDAs)--registered a star in her name for her birthday. Now, Jewel Kilcher, Jewel of the North, shines just inside the Little Dipper. #23 Jewel had a small concert--Jewelstock--in upstate New York last year just for EDAs. Admission was free! #24 Sometimes Jewel loses her lyrics! She couldn't remember the words of an old song during a recent European tour, so her mom called an EDA who e-mailed the song to Jewel. Also, to the side it says: Join Jewel's online fan club! Wanna be an EveryDay Angel? Join the online mailing list by...(blah, blah, blah) It's crazy, so expect to get 60 to 90 messages a day! If you just wanna keep up with Jewel news....(blah, blah, blah) It's an interesting article. I have to give it back to my friend tomorrow. :( Here's where I go in for the kill and ask/convince her to tear it out and give it to me! :) Have a nice day! Legally, they usually can't confiscate equipment, though some places don't seem to know that, and most people aren't sure enough to challenge any of the typically large bodyguard types. Their official options are to send you away, or offer to hold on to the equipment. There is an important difference, which is that they can't actually seize a tape if you get caught during or after an event, legally. They can throw you out, ban you for life, etc, but anything else is generally a violation. In any event, most venues do check for equipment, the only question is how well they do it. Some places simply have a policy in place, and never bother to enforce it, others require opening of bags, and the occasional pat-down. (or a metal detector, nominally for "weapons," will also usually get set off by electronics.) If you don't know the specific venue, you're pretty much out of luck in finding out in advance what you'll have to go through. Sometimes you can arrange in advance (has Jewel's management done this?), sometimes you can arrange for "press" access, if you have the credentials, and sometimes you're just plain out of luck. As far as crowd noise, there are only 2 ways to avoid it: have quiet people around you, or have no people around you. Believe it or not, if often works really well to turn to the chatty people around you before the show starts, and ask "I hate to ask, but would you mind being quiet during the show?" The other way is to find a nice "quiet" spot, generally further from the stage. If there's a bar, you can often stand just on the other side of the rail from the bar. They key is to avoid any specifically identifiable conversation, not to escape the murmer altogether. The amplification at most venues will do the rest.
