By night, he is ruthless, running around the city, distributing his damned propaganda in the form of buttons, tapes, and flyers. I went downtown just to see, and this rocker girl was telling people of her band, the Bubble Blowing Harris Black Sheep. She was standing by the Angel Cafe, introducing herself as Ali. She said that she knew this "Dennis" personally, but clammed up when I asked for more details. With some research, however, I discovered that there is some speculation as to whether or not "Dennis" is the actual leader of the Clan. Some say a man called Keyser Soze is the real boss. It is at this point I must say goodbye for now, for far of being caught. I will have more to come at a later time... Wow! And I thought it couldn't get any better after my first listen to the JewelStock tapes. ;) Skip down a little for Jewel. This first paragraph is pre-Lilith, but maybe a little interesting. We arrived in the Twin Cities area around 3:00 and found the house we were staying at after much wandering. Normally a 45-minute drive, it took us another 2 hours to get to Canterbury Park in Shakopee where the concert was. I made a wrong turn on the way there, but somehow we ended up there anyway coming from the opposite direction. It was impossible not to know where to go because there was a line of cars several miles from Canterbury Park. We rolled down our windows and asked everyone we passed where they were going... Lilith Fair! Once we finally got into the park, Meredith Brooks was just beginning her set. It was about 5:30. My friend Jake and I made our way into the crowd and amazingly sat about 20 feet in front of some guy with a blue EDA shirt on. I walked over to him and yelled "What's your name?" (Meredith was blasting away then.) "Pete!" he yelled. "I'm Scott!" And so our short conversation followed. Pete's the first EDA I've met, and after I returned to standing by Jake we didn't find each other again. Oh well, it was nice meetin ya, Pete. I know of two other EDAs that were there, but I didn't find them. Anyone else? After Meredith was Shawn Colvin. I'm not really into her music, but if anyone wants a setlist for her, let me know. I had to guess at the song titles. *** JEWEL *** After Shawn, we made our way into the crowd in front of the stage. There were so many people! The sun was behind the stage right in your eyes, and JEWEL was about to come on. The sun went down, and no sooner did Jewel come walking from behind the stage. The crowd erupted in screams. She began with Near You Always (set list at end) a cappela, holding the first "please don't say I love you..." More screams. It took me awhile to catch my breath so I didn't sing along to this song. She was wearing blue jeans and a green top, btw. Plain and beautiful. For most of her set the crowd (including me) sang along, and during You Were Meant For Me she stopped singing. The crowd didn't. "Thanks for singing for me" (or something like that). Then she started in again. My favorite of the night was Foolish Games. I've seen her do this on VH1 and a couple other performances, but she was so much more intense. I was almost crying by the end. She concluded with Chime Bells. Jewel didn't do much talking, just the usual "it's because of you that I don't have to waitress" and she left with "thanks for coming, have a good night." It was my impression that she was sad to leave Lilith Fair since it was her last night on the tour. Still, I was blown away. It was my first concert and I'm going through withdrawl now. I didn't time her, but Jewel sang for about 50 minutes. 1. Near You Always 2. Pieces of You (she forgot the words a bit ;) 3. Morning Song 4. Down (first time I've heard it, love it!) 5. Sometimes It Be That Way 6. Love Me Just Leave Me Alone 7. ??? (she didn't write this one, wasn't Too Darn Hot) 8. Who Will Save Your Soul 9. I'm Sensitive 10. Passing Time 11. You Were Meant For Me 12. Foolish Games 13. Chime Bells (and I didn't hear any "yodel!" shouts either) Jewel was followed by the Indigo Girls, and they were amazing. Probably the funnest part of the night, altho Jewel was my favorite. JEWEL came back to sing "My Love & I" and "Closer To Fine" along with the Indigo Girls, Sarah McLachlan, Meredith, and the other performers. I have the IG setlist if anyone wants it. Finally, Sarah came on. She was amazing too, and I also have her setlist. Sarah did a lot more talking than Jewel, and I think she was the highlight of the night for a lot of the people there. We made our way out of the crowd near the end of her set, and it was later made painfully aware to me that Jewel came back out for encores with Sarah and co. I think she sang "Big Yellow Taxi" and a few other songs with the group, pausing to take pictures. I missed that part tho. I also bought the light blue tour book of Jewel's. 18 bucks, but I guess it's worth it. It contains several great pictures and all the songs from her POY vinyl. IMO, the Tiny Lights Tour one is nicer because of the poetry. There were also Jewel t-shirts, but they were $25 and I was out of money. I did buy a Lilith Fair shirt tho leaving the gates. Who CARES about the money a tour makes ? I've paid $6 for some of the best shows of my life, and $35 for some of the worst. And who CARES about who has more fans ? What an incredibly odd thing to be arguing about- especially since NOBODY here has concrete numbers. Sure, Ozzy might have more fans than Jewel, but I bet Jewel has more fans with their original livers. As for Marilyn Manson- If they're gonna try so hard to be anti-establishment, and goth-y, and scary, they've gotta stop whining when people see them as anti-establishment, goth-y, and scary. Greetings from California, EDA's! God, I hope this list is still going. If so, I'm sure it's a couple times larger than it was in January. I wanted to get back in touch because I could really use a dose of Jewel info. After being on the EDA list for 5 months, I had to desubscribe after graduating and moving out of Boston. Since escaping from MIT with a Master's degree in January, I ran off to Eastern Europe for a month to gather my senses. Then I drove out to Los Angeles in mid-March to start a new job and a new life on the Left Coast. I landed in Redondo Beach, CA and started work designing the communications payloads of commercial satellites with Hughes Electronics. Luckily my work weeks are light, so I've had plenty of time to morph into a Californian by taking up beach volleyball and surfing and eating sushi and Mexican. Now that I'm finally settled out here I am LONG overdue for a Jewel fix. The Lilith Fair came and went before I had the sense to get tickets. Since Hughes is firewalled from the rest of the world (and I don't have a computer at home), I no longer have Web access. I could REALLY use a list of Jewel's upcoming concert dates if some of you could send that out. Before everyone (prolly 4000 EDA's now!!) sends me email, let me just ask an LA area EDA to do this favor. I remember a few names: Sinjin, Igor, Tom Proven. Hey if you guys are still out there, could you let me know when the next few nearby (CA,AZ,NV) Jewel shows are? Also, what is the scoop on the new album? Finally, was there ever a JewelStock II this summer, just curious? Thanks so much!! Unfortunately, I won't be resubscribing to the list. My email account is corporate, and the heavy list traffic just wouldn't be allowed. Someday I'll have to buy my own PC... But anyway, I'd love to meet up with some SoCal EDA's at the next Jewel show! I hope everyone is doing well out there, and I really hope this list is still the source of some great discussions as well as Jewel news - I really miss reading it! Finally, hello to Dennis Harris and the other Boston EDA's - Cali is incredible, but I do miss the New England culture, if not the winters!! To make a long story short she had the hotel nightclub dj play ywmfm (our cd, they've never heard of Jewel) and they loved it. So we gave them our copy and hopefully they'll play it. One of them is coming to see us in October so we can ask him if he has been playing it. The other thing is that we have made so many friends in the market place and have even gone to their homes. Most are worse than the shed you park your lawn mower in. Well Nancy has a list of over thirty families that could benefit from tshirts, shoe's, or even a toy for their child. While I'm sure that Joshua's suggestions are well intentioned, I don't regret people "dropping off" the list. This list isn't for everybody and quantity doesn't always equal quality. I have faith that anyone who really belongs on the list, will recognize the beauty of this group and will want to stay for however long it works for them. Personally, I am only interested in about 5-10% of the messages people post. When I returned from a month in California this summer, I had over 3,000 messages backed up. I read them all, just in case someone out there posted something that resonated with my experience or inspired me in a new way. A large number of those posts were flames. While most of them irritated me, and I certainly resented the time wasted reading them, I didn't respond to any of them (either publicly or privately), having learned along time ago that some people just like starting arguments out of a desire for attention. And yes, Joshua is right. It *is* a lot easer to deal with the digests than all those separarte emails. I switched and it made life a lot easier. After I read all those hundreds of obnoxious flames, for a moment, I considered "dropping off" the list entirely. I didn't and I'm glad I stayed. Some of the most memorable and highest experiences of my life have come as a result of this list. Larry G's quote "We started out as fans of Jewel and ended up fans of each other" couldn't be truer. Thanks to all the EDAs who have made my life richer!
