First of all the name of the show is OzzFest, not Ozziefest, but an honest mistake, no big deal. I guess I would be one of the very few people that attended both the Lilith Fair and Ozzfest. To be quite honest, I got much more out of my dollar from Ozz than from Lilith. Between the Black Sabbath renunion that happened at Ozz, and Pantera, maybe the best live metal band around today, and other stuff like Fear Factory, Machinehead and Powerman 5000, the festical was quite entertaining, Ozz may also be alot less commercial than Lilith. John here Of course the Ozzfest would beat Lilith! Come on now, dont be dense, Ozzy is one of the best the business has ever seen! Lilith didnt even have Jewel on all stops! Ozzy has been a steady rocker for the last 30 years, he has millions and millions of fans. Black Sabbath too, and manson(although I cant stand Manson). Are any of you that dense to think Lilith would have a shot in hell to beat out Ozzy in something? Why is it that every time Jewel loses something, someone has to throw some majorshitfit about it? Come on people, she's young, she has a long time, dont put everything on her now. Its just like the MTV thing, why do we have to stuff the boxes? Who cares if she loses once? I mean, she has the future, right? So lay off a little bit. Look, whoever wants to flame, do it to the list, please, I want lots of reactions to this. I mean, if the MTV thing is getting so much, this issue should to. WHAT are everyone else's thought on this? Any other angels out there think Lilith deserved title of best festival more than the Ozzfest deserves it?(yes, its OZZY OSBOURNE, please, he has earned respect, the least you can do is spell his name right) lets compare the 2 for a bit. Jewel-1 album so far, maybe 2, i dont even know. Ozzy-what, 20 albums over his career? Jewel, maybe been on the major seen not even 5 years. Ozzy, 30, maybe more So look at all of this. Ozzy has 30 years worth of support going to his shows, and jewel has a couple of years. you cant even compare the 2 shows. This posting may have neen rather anti-angelic of me or whatever, but i dont care, this guy who thinks Lilith deserves more than Ozzfest is wrong. But then I thought about what might show up tomorrow morning when I check the mailbox, I decided that I would like to offer my explaination regarding my comments and hopefully to clear things up a little. My original purpose for that post with the subject heading "Ozziefest beats Lilith??" (it's Ozzfest actually my bad) was not only to voice my opinion about what is the best musical festival of this summer (I'm not trying to be a music critic but just a very biased Jewel fan) but also to contrast Ozzfest and Lilith Fair, two very different concert events and (I think) polar-opposite from each other in terms of their theme and music that they offered. I guess when I was talking about the virtues of Lilith Fair, I unintentionally put-down Ozzfest. This was not my intention nor the purpose for that post. I understand that some people feel offended because they perceived that I was trying to flame Ozzfest and metal bands and for that I offer my apologies. There was a time not too long ago when some people on this list would put down the bands they don't like, which ended up offending other people who are fans of those bands. I don't want to start right now. I'm asking fellow EDAs on this list to not starting an argument on my post to defend your position on this controversial issue because I do not want to see a flame war occur. I don't think any further debates will change other people's opinion about their position, but due to the (what I perceive as) sensitivity of this issue I think this may sour many EDAs about their opinion on one another. This will only lead to more anger and more flaming, which nearly led to the termination of this mailing list only a few weeks ago. I do not want to see the cooperative spirit and respectful atmosphere that exist within this mailing list to died out. I also ask you not to engage in the "Who's better--Jewel or Ozzy?" debate. Again, some people have strong opinion about this matter and it will only have adverse effect on the future of this mailing list if people decided to talk about it openly. I know that there are some differences within the EDAs (something that we cannot avoid) so why can't we just understand and respect that differences and leave it alone? I may not appreciate the music of Ozzy Osborne but that doesn't mean he's a bad artist..it just mean that I can't understand the depth of his music while others can. I may be a little paranoid but I just don't want to have an avalanche of flame mails to materialize regarding my comments or its responses. If people feel like flaming me please please email me privately. I do not wish Mr.BB to feel like he made a wrong decision to come back to this list. The mailing list for Jewel deserves better. Well, from the rumor I heard Jewel is going to star (or co-star) in a film done by Steven Spielberg. Now, we all know that Spielberg doesn't do indie films (as far as I know anyway...The Lost World certainly didn't feel like an indie when I watched it ;) but I think overall Spielberg is still one of the better directors out there. Therefore, I think Jewel made a wise choice to made her acting debut in his movie. On the other hand, I also agree that Jewel should go for a supporting role in an independent film in the spirit of Fargo and Sling Blade to really polish her emerging acting talent. If the movie does turned out to be a commercial and critical flop (no faults on her own), she will not receive the kind of media backlash that is usually reserved for actors who failed to live up to the hype and the expectation (look at Sandra Bullock right now). I hope the character Jewel is going to portray will be well-written and not a stereotypical role like a damsel in distress or (god forbid!) a prostitute (which most young actresses seem to have to do at least once in their career...including Renee Zellweger in her upcoming movie "Liar"). If she does break into the Hollywood mold, watch out Neve, Mira, Judd, and Renee! :) Steven, the Angel from Mars ********************** "Well I see Red as well/When you see the colour of love/I see the colour of hell" - -Tara MacLean, "Red" ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Aug 1997 09:13:30 -0400 (EDT) From: Anthony Loden Subject: Re: Ozziefest beats Lilith?? Before you go slamming one concert in defense of another, you should get your facts staight. If you don't know if tickets were more and aren't sure where their money goes, then don't say it. Not meant to flame you but it upsets me when people on this list bash artists like Ozzie and Marylin Manson just because they are not folk singers, can't yodel, and becuase the press likes to drum up bull shit rumors about them and their images. I just feel that all artists should get a fair chance, if you don't like their music fine, but just leave it at that. And as far as the greater profit is concerned, I think you underestimate the popularity of the acts on Ozfest. The number of die-hard Ozzie fans far outnumbers those of Jewel, Sarah Mclachlan, and the likes. This leads to greater ticket sales at more venues, with more merchandise being sold at each venue than at Lilith which creates the larger profit. Once again not meant to flame, but the prejudice on this list justs gets me sometimes. In any case, they count it BEFORE taking out all the money for charities. The Lilith Fair raised over $1 million dollars for its various charities (both local and worldwide charities) and non-profit organizations. Besides, the Lilith Fair and Ozzfest are for two COMPLETELY different audiences. I know there are lots of people who attended both (I would have if I could), but the music is distinctly different. Both festivals did rather nicely at selling out their venues. Although it is true that the Ozzfest tickets were steeper, that also shows that people are still willing to pay out that much if they still sell out the place, making it more successful for the money mongrols that they all are. :) Gerrit ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Aug 1997 12:16:15 -0500 (CDT) From: dkaracos@marlin.utmb.edu (Derrick) Subject: SJC: The Ozzy issue To the guy that said everyone *should* send their flames TO the list...um, I don't think that would be a good idea. Mike, do you have any advice for this guy? As far as comparing ANY concerts, festivals, or fairs...who cares??!! Is you went, and you had fun, and you got to see the artists you like, then why does it matter how much money they all made? None of US get the money anyway! Jewel's career isn't in any sort of jeopardy because the Ozzy show did so well. I think there's alot more pertinent Jewel info that could be discussed on this list than how much money concert festivals made...and Jewel wasn't even a part of all the Lilith dates. If I was the only person at Lilith, I still would have enjoyed it. I personally, like *smaller* crowds. Being smashed by 1000's of people, nearly suffering from heat exhaustion and barely being able to see any bands is not my idea of fun. I've been to shows of both types. But ultimately it shouldn't matter who sells what, and how many, and how much. If Jewel only had sold 100 albums so far, I'd still have mine. If Ozzy bit the head off of 100 bats instead of one, I'd still own the albums from him that I currently have. Enjoy the music, the entertainment, and let the marketing reps, and all the business people deal with the ticket sales, etc. That's what they're paid to do. We don't need ANY more posts to the list about this...any flames to should be directed to that person only. Privately. The list doesn't need to be put in jeopardy again. I agree totally that certain acts from Ozzfest, like Ozzy and Pantera, have established themselves farmore than Jewel. (though let's not forget that the Indigo Girls and Sarah M. have also established themselves also...) The two concerts were hard to compare to say which one was better. The LF was much more sane. That I must applaud it for. I went to Ozzfest expecting madness, I love moshing as much as the next guy, but Ozzy couldn't show at our concert and the crowd, full of "typical" male (mostly) testosterone pumped people decided that it would be fun to destroy sh@#, light stuff on fire, and hurt others because somehow that would help that Ozzy couldn't make it out. In my opinion, this is sheer stupidity. (Hope I didn't offend anyone.) If Jewel couldn't have made it out for the LF show I went to it would have sucked but I don't believe too many people would have even thought to him/her self "Hey, let's go turn over a car!!!" Anyway, that's all I have to say because I have to go back to work now. If you have some of Jewel's performances/appearances recorded from t.v. and you'ld like to get a hold of more then here's your chance: I have quite a few t.v. appearances, performances & videos Jewel has done on video tape. What I want to do is collect as many as I can from everyone, compile them all onto my master Jewel Compilation Video tape, and then make dubs of the entire compilation video to send back to whoever contributed. (I am not doing the long apprearances like Unplugged, Hard Rock Live etc., just the short 2-3 songers & interviews usually done on talk shows, etc.) If you don't have any video footage to contrubute, but still would like a copy of the finished Jewel Compilation Video, we can arrange dubbings after the project is finished and those who contributed have been sent their copies. Instructions: 1. Let me know you are intested by replying with "Jewel Compilation Video" in the subject. 2. I will send you a list of what I already have on video, so you can send me a dub of what I do not have. 3. I will dub your video footage onto my master Jewel Compilation Video. 4. When I have finished compiling as many as I can find, then I will dub the finished Jewel Compilation Video onto the same video cassette you sent me, dubbing over whatever was on it, and I will send it back to you. So be sure to send me a return envelope with postage (about eight .32 cent stamps) so I can send your video back. If this sounds good, then let's get it started! So did I and then the next day after work I was so exited to look at all the posts all the EDA's have posted that day so I came home looked at my mailbox WOW!35-40 messages I know others get more. =) But before you start getting fustrated and say "GET ME OFF THIS LIST" that's a qoute from alot of EDA's. When you subscribed I know I had three different methods. Method 1) Loose mail ( I would put money on this that the ones that say " GET ME OFF THIS LIST") are on this method 2)digest mail (this is what I am on) Digest mail - Is you get two or three digests a day with 40-50 posts in each digest. So if you get three digets a day thats it you get three digests that has 50 post in it 150 post in three. =) Method 3) (I am not on this) this is all about "Jewel news" So now if you are thinking about "UN"subscribing please think about it again! =) How to get the digest virsion- go back to where you subscribed first unsubscribe from the "loose mail" and resubscribe to the "digest mail" I think you all will like it more. =) Please note i'm not good at writing about this kind of stuff. =) If anyone want's to add or rewrite this in a diffent format go ahead. =) Hope this helped and may let you think twice before "UN"subscribing! There appears to be quite a few EDA's (both old and new) who will be attending the PNC show of Jewel's upcoming tour. So..... once again Tammy and I are inviting attending EDAs to our house for a pre-show BBQ. We live about 10 miles (20 minutes) from the venue, so it's a short drive. However, this gathering will not be of the magnitude that our past events have been, and there are a few unusual rules -- (1) Please no "pre-cleared" non-EDA guests -- please (2) We are having a "potluck" BBQ -- which means you really should bring something. A&P is right down the corner if you just want to buy something. (3) This is not a normal gathering, so don't expect alot -- it is just a bunch of friends getting together before a show. Rough schedule of events: 2:00pm -- Gather at our house and fire up the BBQ 3:00pm -- Eating and drinking ;-) 6:00pm -- Tailgate at the PNC parking lot 7:30pm -- EDA gathering inside the venue over by the north patio area 8:00pm -- show begins 8:45ish -- Second EDA gathering in between sets before Jewel comes on 11:00pm - After show party at our house What I need from you is a quick e-mail letting us know your plans (i.e., will you be at the BBQ or just show).
