On August 29, this Friday (yes!!!!) Cindy Lee Berryhill and Elizabeth Hummel will perform on Salt Spring Island, Canada. Any northwest EDAs can come out of the trees for this special show. Let me know if you need accomodation or travel help. (contact Adrian at howenow@imagen.net ) On Saturday August 30 Cindy Lee and Elizabeth will be performing in the all day extravaganza, Indian Summerstock. (I know some people are tired of Woodstock, Fahnestock and Birkenstocks... but I've found that people off-line, who don't know about the various EDA stocks, love the name.) This is truly a once-in-lifetime tour and from all the reviews from the east coast dates recently wrapped up, it's not to be missed. Looking forward to meeting EDAs and showing you the island life. I do have a point, and I hope i can make it, and hopefully people will read it and maybe find something of value. (and at least it is very much Jewel related) Not to single him specifically out, but Phil Kelnhofer wrote: > I agree that the new album will be excellent judging by the new songs we > have heard lately (both via Angelfood and in concert). The hype from POY will remain and carry-over. I don't > doubt that Atlantic knows how to sell albums. A great point. I think a major danger in being a hit artist is that you can't help that some people will get sick of hearing about an artist, regardless of how they might feel about the music otherwise. Fame itself is fickle enough that if you let the spotlight turn away, it's pretty hard to get it back. If Atlantic wants to play the "superstar" game, what's the real harm? Certainly, I don't doubt they'd chew up Jewel and spit her out if they thought it'd make them the most money, but Jewel and 'Nedra and all are a bit smarter than that, I'd hope people realize. My point here is, just because 2 (or more) groups of people might have different goals, doesn't mean they can't all benefit from working with each other. As long as each group doesn't lose sight of their own goals, everyone is happy. > My question is "Is selling the greatest number of albums the best thing for > Jewel?" If Jewel did sign with Atlantic because she felt the had the best > marketing stragety for her, then I have no problem. If Jewel is the one > saying push back the album and release another single, then I have no > problem. Well, her original reasons do not have to be her current reasons, but I don't think that changes the validity of this final conditional. As long as Jewel is satisfied that the strategy meets her goals, great... > However, these do not seem to be the case. I admit, I'm finally starting to also see signs of this... Jewel definitely seems to have expressed some discontent lately... And she seems to be starting to push for releasing the 2nd album, etc.. (the earlier reduction of "new" material in performances was, in my mind, likely Atlantic's idea, and she seems to have decided it's time to stop holding back again, even if FG charts a lot longer than it already has.) > Obviously, Atlantic's stragety. > although excellent lately, was not that great originally it did take POY > over a year to reach the top ten. I do have to disagree here. Atlantic people and former A&R Jenny Price have all said they originally expected to move 30,000 units. This wasn't a strategy, it was just what they thought was possible. It wasn't until much later they began to sense greater commercial potential. This isn't poor strategy, it's just misreading the situation. I think their strategy is to milk as much money as they can out of what they've already got. I don't like Atlantic's strategy, but recognize it's how the game is played. Tactics, the way they implement strategy, have been highly effective, if somewhat cold-hearted. > So, I think that Atlantic has more control over Jewel's career than she > does right now, and that is what bothers me. I guess this is what really motivated me to post... Certainly, actions taken by Atlantic and Jewel right now will have repercussions later. My only real concern re: Atlantic is burnout. As I said earlier, Atlantic would be happy to consume her and forget her to make a buck. I think Jewel is indeed smart enough to known when to draw the line here. Commercially, a big risk is that Atlantic has oversold Jewel's popularity, and there will be enough of a backlash she'll be unable to be this popular again. Personally, I don't see any real loss in this. My only concern here would be that she might have gotten ripped off on royalties. If she didn't, there's no harm for her in this outcome. She could, even after recoupable funds, still afford to keep performing and recording for years, and never need to chart again. In a sense, this could be the best outcome, as she'd be dropped by the label, releasing her from obligations to anyone, and she could simply chase her dreams. If she wants to chart, then hey, what's for her to get upset about? Charting isn't about art, it's about bragging rights. She's simply getting what she worked so hard for these last 3 years. And my biggest concern: She's neither concerned about making "art" nor money. She'd like to play her music until the world doesn't know pain. How long can she try? When your goal is a miracle on the scale most religions don't even expect to reach, how do you gauge success? (I'll take a stab at answering: one person at a time) Personally, I adore her for what she dares to want and for who she dares to be. I don't think the word "failure" can ever apply to someone who has followed her heart with such dedication. The challenge for Jewel is to remember her dreams, to remember for what she wants to live. Michael, I guess I don't understand what you are saying. In the lovely music business, the labels virtually dictate the terms of an artist's contract when it is the first deal, as Jewel's was. Clout in that wondrous business comes only from leverage and "bottom line" power, not from healing power. Jewel DOES have "bottom line" power, but it will be given deference only if she (via her "team") asserts herself, perhaps in ways she is as yet unwilling to do. I just don't see what her lawyer can do for her except to threaten the label or something. Please explain what you had in mind, as it sounds like a really interesting thread to me! Her voice is a little like Jewel's......BUT is different in a lot of ways, like she doesn't yodel.......... My brother says she's not a 'new' artist she's been around ever since the 80's But she doesn't have any new material........He used to listen to her a lot when we used to live in Poland........Anyone else like her???? ================================= * Hyper Angel * ================================= "im half alive, but i feel mostly dead" ================================= ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Aug 1997 15:35:25 -0400 (EDT) From: MrLappie@aol.com Subject: Re: Viewer's Choice Award Hi I dont mean this to be a flame or anything, but isnt it kinda wrong for us to stuff the voting boxes or whatever?I mean, doesnt another band/group deserve it more than someone who wins just because she has fans who have nothing better to do then try and get her a cheap victory? I think Jewel would feel bad if she knew each of us were voting a hundred times a day or whatever. So please, whoever has voted has voted, not many more people probably will, let it go, we dont need any more voting posts. It was mentioned before that we need to cut down on traffic, but with 10 or 15 posts a day JUST on the MTV thing, we are doing nothing more but creating MORE traffic. I dont want the keeper of the list to close this thing down because a few people went nuts over this stupid MTV thing. Its not like jewel is going to be a one-album wonder, she will have tons more videos in the future, and they will all be great, so if she loses, oh well, she'll get it next year Now I expect this to get a lot of flames, so keep them private. You can post them if you want, just keep the volume of mail already flowing through this in mind I wont say sorry for posting, because if I really was sorry, I wouldnt have posted in the first place Bye everyone John ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Aug 1997 14:41:55 -0400 (EDT) From: DmBear978@aol.com Subject: JC:Heres a chance to tape YWMFM!! Hi Everybody, I just got a new computer & Im on it right now. The keyboard feels weird...thats besides the point. MTV is doing a 'And the Nominees Are' show for next weeks video awards, & they show the whole Sean Penn version of YWMFM. Yeah, you get the writing that takes up the screen for a sec. in the beginning/end, but hey at least you get to see a video that isn't on much anymore :) PS - Mark(sparks) that is a very cool way of voting. Who can say its ... nevermind! Hehe!! For those wondering about it, its a full band blues. Although writing credit is not given to Jewel, it's identical to the standard blues changes of her "I Got The Blues More Than You Do Blues" but much "heavier" with the full band treatment. The lyrics are fairly humorous & are obviously custom tailored to fit this project. The basic subject matter is "cruisin in her Coupe De Ville, heading off to surf". There's even a joke reference to the Cadillac being a real "jewel". :-) Jewel also takes the humorous lead guitar solo on her acoustic. Although destined to be just a footnote in Jewel's repertoir, its good diversionary fun. Since this is a live programme and the music guests usually perform live in the studio, I'd guess Jewel would be over in the UK at the time (unless there is a satellite link-up). This would seem to be very close to Jewel's appearance at the MTV VMA, the following evening. Does anybody have any more information about this?
