Dear EDA's, In response to the number of messages that are upset with posts that apologize about a post they are putting up, I'm offering my angle on the subject. Let's say, hypothetically, that I were to post a message that would be of interest to half of the list, but the other half doesn't care for it. Therefore, I "apologize" to the readers of non-interest because I know there are a large number of them. Is that so wrong? This is all off the top of my head, so please excuse me if I make little or no sense. The financial future of Lilith is really an unpredictable thing. It could remain huge, or it could dwindle away. Why? Most of the performers play pop, essentially. We can call Jewel a modern folk artist, but, in my mind, she is a pop musician. So were Dylan and Mitchell ("All I got is a red guitar, three chords and the truth." hmm...). It wasn't the Genre that sets them apart, but the quality of their writing. But my point is that what is POPular changes with very short lengths of time. What if next year the hottest thing is retro, or reggae, or "testosterone rock". That last phrase is possibly the most stupid, infantile piece of...oh, sorry, just my male hormones racing. As I was saying before my genetically programmed angst kicked in, "testosterone rock" does not exist. It is a slur used by some misled fans of softer genres, or of women artists. How can anyone put hardcore,punk,metal/progressive metal,ska/skacore,alternative (ech, another useless name) and any other style a man might play into the same category? Each is a completely seperate genre! The only link is that they're loud and they are usually at best 3/4 male . Which also holds true for the stage of Lilith (Yes, I'm pointing this out again). The Cardigans have one girl, who does no more or less than any other members of the band. Almost every backing band was all male. If they want to say it celebrates women in music, they damned well better get some women to play the bloody instruments. At least, that's my opinion. I have been known to be horribly wrong. - --Josh Gannon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Aug 1997 18:17:02 -0400 (EDT) From: Robert Vergura Subject: Setlists Needed Hello fellow Angels! Consider how outrageous some record companies paid for the artists under their label (like what Janet Jackson & R.E.M. got for the new contract they signed), the money must come from somewhere. However, I'm not entirely convinced that Jewel's second LP won't be as good or sell as well just because of all these Angelfood passing around within the EDAs. Sure, I probably won't be surprised when her new album is released cuz I've heard all those songs in advance. But I will definitely purchase her album regardless because I like her songs very much, and Angelfood is only there to whet our appetite until her album is released. Besides, the sound quality from a cd is still better than your standard cassette tapes, and all those new pics from Jewel will only be available with the compact disc. In any rate, I'll be more than happy to pay to hear "Run Torto Run", "Satellite", and "Grey Matter" again. This time on the cd format. If Atlantic releases a single of the next album as soon as POY starts to drop (maybe when it falls to around 20 on the Billboard Charts), I believe it will sell incredibly well. The hype from POY will remain and carry-over. I don't doubt that Atlantic knows how to sell albums. My question is "Is selling the greatest number of albums the best thing for Jewel?" If Jewel did sign with Atlantic because she felt the had the best marketing stragety for her, then I have no problem. If Jewel is the one saying push back the album and release another single, then I have no problem. However, these do not seem to be the case. Obviously, Atlantic's stragety. although excellent lately, was not that great originally it did take POY over a year to reach the top ten. Secondly, publicly Jewel has seemed unhappy with the stragety as of late. So either Jewel is lying to us or Atlantic is making these decisions regardless of what Jewel wants. From my brief interaction with Jewel and my conversations with Lenedra and Bibi, I don't think the former is true. So, I think that Atlantic has more control over Jewel's career than she does right now, and that is what bothers me. Jewel's Harborlight show is only a short 4 days away! For those of us going, I have a plan in the works for before and after the show. Chris Snyder suggested a place for dinner before the show, which i think will be great. Here is the vital info... 1. Where we will meet: South Station, right inside the doors. For those of you taking the T, take the red line to South Station. When coming out of the turnstyles, go left and up the stairs. There is construction going on around there, so you have to follow the pedestrian ways. Go kind of to the right and it wraps around to go the opposite direction you were walking when you came up the stairs. You'll see South station up ahead. It's the brick building with glass doors. It's hard to miss. You can wait right inside. There is a hotel reservation phone thing that is right there, and that may be a good place to wait. Just don't block it. If you are driving, you may want to park at Harborlights, if you get there early. It's first come, first serve. Otherwise, you can find around $6.00 parking in little lots. For directions to S. Station from where you park, ask the attendent. For directions to Harborlights, check out the web page: www.harborlights.com I am going to try and make very detailed directions just in case something happens and you miss the group. I'll send them out by Wednesday. 2. When we will meet: 5:30 PM The show starts at 7:30, so we need time to eat and wait for stragglers. I am going to try to get there by 5:00, but no promises. I'll try to have someone be there who knows what's up in case i'm late. I don't know how early I can get out of work. 3. Where we will eat: The Spaghetti Factory Chris Snyder suggested this fine establishment. I've never been there, so we are in for a surprise. I'm gonna call them and get some more info. But it is within sight of the Harborlights tent, so it makes it easy to get to the show afterwards. 4. Where we will go after the show: ???? I still haven't figured that out yet...and time is short...ugh... Again, the final details will be out by Wednesday. If you have any questions or suggestions, just email me with Harborlights in the subject.
