I don't know much about Atlantic Records, but obviously some people here in EDA land don't really like them much. Well I just have this to say. Obviously they can't be that bad for JEWEL considering the fact that she is still with them. I mean she's a smart girl and she knows whats best for her and if she was getting screwed by AR she would have left them a long time ago. So now I ask you not to worry about wether or not JEWEL is doing good with that company cause as you can see she is. If any one should worry about it, it will be JEWEL. I mean cut them some slack. Since you folks are my musical community, I thought I'd share. Most of the following info is debatable, especially for those of you that like to flame. =) =) Tonight I had the priviledge of once again catching a new video on M2. Forgive me for not even catching the name of the song, but the band is Daft Punk. Daft Punk has been churning out excellent ambient-house music for years, originating in the ecstacy rave days of a few years back with greats like Josh Wink and Mighty Dub Cats. =) For those of you that are already lost, ambient-house is that techno music with mellow overtures that is spun during the down side of a rave or merely to cool off the dancers a bit. House music being the harder generated racing tracks that have characterize raves since the eighties. If you are not sure what 'raves' are, they are all around you. They are those huge spontaneous (actually well-planned) dance parties which last until at least 8AM and thrive on high energy electronic rhythm creations that would stop your grandmother's pacemaker. This is where Prodigy and the Chemical Brothers and such got their start. The rave scene always pops up when mainstream music just can't seem to get its act together, 1977-79, 1986-1988, 1993-1995. It has its roots in underground disco. Dallas and NYC have been the Mecca's for ravers. =) House music is not based on melody, as pop music is. It is entirely based on rhythm. Here's the basic formula for an ambient-house track (not often called "songs", because they are subject to any good DJ's interpretation): The key is a solid mid-range complex rhythm on which the track is built on. This is backed up by one or two heavy bass grooves. Layered on top of these are spiralling harmonic rhythms in the higher ranges, and often samples of voices and sounds to give the song its theme. Each of these different rhythms is termed a layer and the track can be broken down as such. True artists will build a track into seven, eight, or more rhythms running in the same frames. =) If you still have no idea what I am talking about, watch Daft Punk's new video and you may understand. What is done in the video is that the seperate rhythms are broken down and given humanesque characters. For example, the main rhythm is depicted by men in black skeletal suits which pulse to the beat of their rhythm. The deep bass is depicted by beings that have bodies that are too large, cirlcling the stage that houses the harmonic rhythms. The harmonic rhythms play on a center stage, depicted by lighter colors, faster, more flowing movement, amd graceful aerobics. I counted six or more rhythms/dances working together to build into an intriguing and hypnotizing display of music and videography. =) In a questionable time for music video, this simple, yet so captivating vid reminded me of my roots in rave and that all good music is never of the same genre. This song and its video are a simple lesson in how to do things the right way. =) Enough already! =) Be an Angel Every Day! =) Crunch! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Aug 1997 04:31:02 -0400 (EDT) From: Harrisbros@aol.com Subject: NJC: If you can't run with the big dogs stay on the porch ;-) *** Lea wrote a LONG, well thought-out subject line: >Subject: Uhmm Sorta Jewel Related.. but I mean really You can throw this away >afterwards... I hardly ever post and will seldom continue to because of my shy nature (I'm nervous like hell right now), but I'd like to present an observation on Jewel's popularity nowadays (sorry if this has already been discussed). I first discovered Jewel about a six months ago watching the YWMFM video and immediately became hooked. I bought POY and listened non-stop for days on end. Then one day I looked up Jewel on yahoo and found a lot of websites and discovered this mailing list. I immediately signed on and was amazed at the number of people who also enjoyed Jewel, because a lot of my friends didn't even know who she was and if they did, they thought she was just OK. Over the next six months, I became a bigger fan through angelfood (thanks Josh, Mary, and Heather :) and this list. Recently, upon buying the mags with Jewel on the cover, a friend of mine asked if I was obsessed with her (as a joke). Then he said that he hates Jewel now. When I asked him why, he said that she was everywhere and was growing tired of seeing her. This stunned me. We as EDA's, love seeing her every chance we get. However, if you look at the over-saturation of Jewel in the media, I can see where my friend is coming from. What if a group you don't hate, but don't necessarily, like was all over the media like Jewel is? You'd get tired of seeing them and, to some degree, even despise them, right? Well Jewel now was\is up for many awards, on the cover of major magazines like Time and Rolling Stones, has three videos which are getting a lot of air time now, has her own line of merchandise coming out (not sure, but read in someone's post), talking about a movie deal with Steven Spielberg, a multi-platinum album, an upcoming album next year along with a poetry book, and even more coverage for being in Lilith Fair. Maybe you notice what my friend means now, huh? And maybe Kathy Lee (who I hate) wasn't that far from what other people were thinking when she said, recently on the replay of her show when Jewel appeared, that she was tired of seeing Jewel's face everywhere she goes (I didn't see this, from someone else's post). Also being as famous as Jewel is, I think it will be very difficult not to be changed by all this fame. When you have a multi-platinum debut album and receive a standing ovation by thousands almost every day, it will probably be a little hard not to be getting even a little cocky, despite Jewel's strong character. Could it be that the recent Rolling Stones, with the blurb about Jewel being cocky at a recent LF show that we all dismissed and argued against, actually be true? I hope that this is not the early sign that the public is beginning to tire of Jewel, and that Jewel will continue to shine for years to come. I'm trying to remember if this was how NKOTB ended (granted that unlike NKOTB, Jewel has talent :), because I remember (vaguely, I was in the forth grade at the time) seeing NKOTB everywhere. Thanks for reading. Sorry this post was so long. Sorry if I had offended anyone. If anyone wants to call me an idiot, please email me and not to the list (be careful with me cause I'm sensitive and I'd like to stay that way :). Many people read the digest and most of the loose-mail readers probably don't check their mail constantly. Yesterday, one of the digests had about seven posts which basically just gave the current standings. 2) Voting as many times as you can in day seems a little like ... cheating. I'm sure that other people (and possibly other mailing lists or newsgroups) are trying to "stuff" the ballot box and I know that MTV doesn't say anything about voting more than once. But, c'mon do you think Jewel wants to win an award because we all sat there and clicked on her video for 8 eight hours a day. 3) It's a stupid category! They call it "Viewer's Choice", but really it should be "Viewer's with Internet Access Award" or even better "Viewer's with Internet Access and Nothing Better to Do Than Clicked on a Websight for 8 Eight Hours a Day Award". You can not get a sample of the general population over the internet. You can only get a sample of people on the internet. 4) It's not that great a video. People YWMFM is not a great video. Lawrence Carrol is NOT one of the better video directors out there. He uses the same images and shot in many of his videos. He like large, virtually empty sets, uncentered shots, and playing with the focus. The shot at the end of YWMFM where the chair cuts in and out of focus was duplicated almost identically in "Precious Declarations" by Collective Soul, also directed by Lawrence Carrol. Remember, the award it for the Video not the song. WWSYS won no awards because it was a crappy video made cheaply. YWMFM will probably win something because Jewel is big right now, but it won't win on it's own merits. If you want to vote then by all means go ahead. If you want to make others aware of how to vote, go ahead. But posting things like "Every vote for Jewel as many times as you can or the Spice Girls will beat her." Makes all EDA's a look a little foolish. Well I am sure that those stratagies are used to help records make the charts. I think what this boils down to is question of control over one's own music and destiny. If Jewel's goal is to be on the Billboard charts and sell as many albums as possible, then I have no problem with Atlantic using these stragaties to help her. However, I (and I am would guess many EDA's) don't think Jewel is in it for these reasons. If Jewel's goal is to share her talents with people, however, if think she would be better served releasing more than one album every three years. Jewel is a prolific and talented writer, and while I don't automatically love every Jewel song I here, I honestly think she has two or three solid CD's worth of unreleased stuff. Lisa Germano (perhaps best known for playing violin behind John Mellencamp) is also a talented song writer. She had a CD with Capitol Records, but was unhappy with the way the songs were mixed in the final edit. She ended up leaving Capitol for 4AD who gave her much more control. She said that she knew leaving Capitol would be less airplay, less chance of her videos making MTV, and less chance for fame. Instead, she wanted her music to be hers. Now, I don't think Jewel should leave Atlantic. They have done much for her. They got her a band (perhaps their best move from my estimation). I just want to know that Jewel is the one calling the shots. It seems we always hear, "Atlantic decided to release Foolish Games as single" or "The record company decided to push the new album back another two months" and not "Jewel decided she wanted to rerecorded You Were Meant for Me." The second album was originally scheduled for release in the Fall of 96. Now we are hearing Summer of 98. That's over a year and a half delay. Yes, the EDA's have Angelfood to tide us over, but this in not about wanting to here more Jewel songs (I'm sure we will hear the new stuff before it gets released). It is about Jewel controlling her own destiny. As you mostly know, a Living Room Show is a house party put on by an EDA (usually) for other EDAs and friends, to showcase a concert by traveling musicians, in this case Cindy Lee Berryhill and Joy Eden Harrison. We ask that you email or call me (Bart) to express your interest in hosting a concert; tell us where you are and what dates are possible. If we can fit you in the schedule, I'll call you and ask you to send a $100. deposit against door proceeds (we suggest $10. per person). The deposit is to be subtracted when you pay the girls the door proceeds the night of the event. Last time we suggested that an average of 20 people per show would hopefully pay the ladies' travel expenses for the tour. That doesn't mean you have to get a certain number of people--it was just a guideline. And this time, with the understanding that school has started for many folks and that makes a difference as who can travel to these gatherings, and since Joy has to drive to Chicago anyway, we should be okay with smaller averages, though of course the more the merrier! But if you're not sure you can get more than 12 people, I'd say go ahead and offer to host a concert anyway if you really wanna. Keep in mind that we then have to put together an itinerary, so we may not be able to play all dates and locations offered, but we'll try. Or they will--I'm just the secretary/receptionist (Houston control for the LRT module). Hope to hear from you soon! In the multimedia blitz since, too many critics---no doubt peeved that someone they'd "discovered" has been mainstreamed---now regard "Pieces of You" with the false superiority of an ego bruised by an old flame. But "Pieces of You" deserved at least three stars then, and it still does. Remember that Jewel paid her dues as a coffeehouse minstrel, and but for the two singles propped up by the Stray Gators ("Who Will Save Your Soul" and "You Were Meant for Me"), "Pieces" is an intimate, austere collection of heartsongs, intended for private thoughts and piquant memories sorted between sips of cappuccino. Taken in this context, the gentle lure of "Near You Always", "Don't", or "Foolish Games" cannot be denied. Nor can the fact that, her kittenish soprano aisde, Jewel possesses a rich, rangy voice that's only on the verge of finding itself. Now---the one-half star: A limited-edition "Pieces of You," available only on vinyl, includes five tracks not on the original, (plus all the packaging of the original, only bigger). Unfortunately, a half-star is about all these add. Two of the tunes---"Rocker Girl" and "Cold Song"---are silly throwaways, in which Jewel relapses into her troubling case of the cutes. A third, "Angel Needs a Ride," finds Jewel in passionate voice, but it's really not much of a song. The brooding "Emily" (from the film "Crossing Guard"), however, is a noteworthy addition to "Pieces of You," as is "Everything Breaks," about sifting through the ashes of a burned-out relationship. Those two whet the appetite for Jewel's someday follow-up album---and they are the reminders of those coffeehouse nights when the engaging young woman with the guitar sang, we believed, as if just for us. - ---DAVID L. Don't post to the list that you don't want them cuz 1. It won't stop them 2. It actually creates more mail along the same lines (responses and stuff) 3. The person has as much right to post as anyone 4. Just cuz YOU aren't interested doesn't mean others aren't 5. There are people already taking care of it The person writing has every right to if it's even remotely about EDA topics which the voting stuff is, Lilith Fair is, set lists are, LRT reviews are, etc. Of course not all posts are going to interest everyone. A lot of times I see "inside" jokes on a post that I don't get, but am I going to say "No jokes!". Of course not, cuz someone else enjoys them, that's enough. Bottom line, just say to others what you would like them to say to you. If you think you have to "phrase something right" to make it sound good. You probably shouldn't be posting it to this list or sending it Email. I know that the Emails are overwhelming; that's why the digest version is a great option. There isn't a newslist around that doesn't have this problem. Let's show them an example of dealing with it that is sensitive. I've been reading the opinions expressed by both sides of this issue with great interest and now I would like to talk a little further about my feelings toward AR. It's true that Atlantic Records have done alot for Jewel and probably at least partly responsible for her incredible success. I think Jewel feels owning a debt to those people at AR so therefore although she has openly complained about her second album been pushed-back, she did not (apparently) challenge her record company's decision. Whatever AR may have contribute to making Jewel a multimedia kind of success story, they should not be exempt from any criticisms, esp. the ones that they deserve. I do think pushing back the releasing of her second LP is purely a business not a creative decision and exec at AR are determined to milk this "cash cow" for whatever its worth. Perhaps they think they have the right since they've stick with Jewel for a few years now and it's time to reap the harvest. Like the other EDA has said, if it is Jewel who makes all the major decisions concerning her music and its direction and not AR would be fine. But I don't think so. The bottom line is, just because AR has something to do with Jewel's multiplatium-selling LP and her mag covers doesn't mean they can exploit her as well. Sorry (it's longer than I though it would be).
