Apologies if you're being spammed with this info more than once, but as a digest subscriber well, I have no way of knowing :) Yes, there is. Internet votes are /not/ the only way it is done. They also send out a good few hundred to media personalities around the country and have them submit their votes. I suspect those might have more weight. How do I know this? One of the personalities at the radio station I listen to got a ballot, and was filling it out over the air (with the help of the other DJs and some listeners who called in) a few weeks back. So the Internet (a decidedly biased base) is not the only means. And I suspect they probably know people vote multiple times -- I'm surprised they don't require email submission to keep it somewhat more fair (somewhat, because if you're like me, you have about 7 different, valid email addresses) -- so they discount it because of that too., But then it /is/ a very subjective thing, so... We're a pretty large group of people, with a few general notions about what we want the world to be like (in one word, better), why not form the EDAYO -- EveryDay Angels Youth Organization. The younger members will try and get their friends to help change the world, in a global-coordinated group of local efforts, we could make each and every community a little bit better, and help the world on the overall. This'll be the junior branch of the EDAF, and will undertake projects like the PJK trust, on a more community specific level (look for your community's PJK, it's sad to say there's someone in need nearly where ever you look). I've even got the movement's moto - "Maybe if we are surrounded in beauty, one day we will become what we see". On a second note, today is the 15 day of the month of Av, which is the Jewish equivalent of Valentine's. So to all of the lovers out there, happy Tu BeAv. Last but not least, I just put in a vote for Jewel, and the current standings are Jewel - 26%, but Wallflowers - 29. I almost killed her though when Jewel and Sarah walked on stage to sing with the Indigo Girls. See you don't understand. Sarah and Jewel, two of my favorite singers, walked onstage, arm in arm, and sang with one of my favorite bands. Not to mention that they all sang my fav Indigo Girls song (Closer to Fine) together. This is the topper....Jewel, Sarah, and Sara Lee (bassist for Ani DiFranco, my other absolute fav) all shared a microphone!! He reiterated that to us recently: "No way. I wouldn't do a reunion. I feel like we left on a good note and I just don't want to recreate it again. The only reason to do it would be for money." So how does he feel about all the reunions going on? "I don't know and I don't care," he says. "I don't know of any reunion that I would want to see. Captain Beefheart live, I'd like to see. Other than that, I can't think of any. I'm not interested in reunions, I'm interested in the future." Speaking of the future, when asked if he had to put his money on a few bands of today that will be around in five or 10 years, Ocasek said the Smashing Pumpkins, or Billy Corgan, who co-produced his forthcoming solo album, Troublizing (Sept. 9, Columbia), and probably Jewel. "I would say Jewel's pretty good," says Ocasek. "She writes good songs." He goes on to say, "Some people write the same song for their whole career, like, I can't tell one U2 song from the next."... ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Aug 1997 21:47:42 -0500 From: twh662@juno.com (T H) Subject: MuchMusic I&I Now this was truly Unplugged (just Jewel and her guitar except FG) and awesome. Most of the songs she sang were on POY, but she sang Deep Water, Satelite and Last Dance Rodeo(I think). These 3 songs I never heard before, they are just terrific! Every time I hear one of her songs for the first time it suprises me so much 'cause I just love her(music) even more. She is the only singer that I love every single song she does. Her last song was an extremely powerful and emotional Foolish Games. I taped it so I *might* be able to make copies. Before my box gets filled up with requests, wait 'til I tell you that I can. I might also make audio tapes for it. I'm especially interested to find out if Cindy Lee Berryhill, Elizabeth Hummel, Joy Eden Harrison, Steve Poltz or Gregory Page will be playing anytime soon. Or, for that matter, if any of them will be playing in LA over the next week. Thanks, Kris Kane I need to know this information as well. I was reading the LA Weekly today and saw that The Rugburns played a show at Chasers Bar & Grill in Lakewood. I cannot believe I missed the show. I thought their show at The Casbah last month was their last until next year. Oh well.... The only news I've heard of San Diego music is the Annual San Diego Street Scene (Sept 5-7) which is always excellent. Scheduled performers of interest this year: John Kay and Steppenwolf Wild Colonials Ziggy Marley & the Melody Makers Joan Osborne **Gregory Page** Liquid Groove Social Distortion Rocket From the Crypt Buck-O-Nine Less Than Jake Sister Hazel Big Mountain Doobie Brothers Taryn Lynn Donath Big Bad Voodoo Daddy Cherry Poppin' Daddies That Dog KC & the Sunshine Band David Byrne Spearhead Long Beach Dub All Stars (ex-Sublime) Save Ferris The Commodores Big Head Todd and the Monsters Los Lobos This is the only event that I've heard about since I've moved to LA. Please let me know what's up with the music scene San Diego EDA's. Thanks. Other shows at Joe's of interest: 8/19 -- Randi Driscoll 8/20 -- Cindy Lee Berryhill 8/24 -- Kelly Hoyer (email Igor for a description) 8/26 -- Randi Driscoll 8/27 -- Cindy Lee Berryhill 8/29 -- John Katchur Jewel's off the week of 8/20 - 8/28, and I don't know if she's coming home, but I'll be at Joe's on Friday, and I hope to see everyone who can shake another Friday free before the end of the summer. - -=-K'b'ka-=- ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #656 ***************************
