Mick Fleetwood Compiles Rumours Tribute Album Jewel, Elton John, & The Cranberries Contribute Songs Mick Fleetwood is in the midst of overseeing a Rumours cover album, which will be a tribute to Fleetwood Mac's classic 1977 work released probably in 1998 on Lava/ Atlantic. According to Fleetwood, the album will feature Jewel on "You Make Loving Fun," which he says is "great" and already in the can, the Cranberries on "Go Your Own Way," and Elton John on "Don't Stop." "It's an idea that came from [Rumours producer] Richard Dashut, who has produced Fleetwood Mac for many years," says Fleetwood. "He reached out to me to help him put it together and that's what I've done. I'm very excited about it. There's about five or six other bands that would be sort of misleading to give, but it's happening. It's mostly younger artists, but when Elton expressed interest in doing it, I was just so flattered. He's going to play the shit... Imagine his piano playing on 'Don't Stop.' And No Doubt, we're hoping they're going to do 'Dreams,' and we're trying to persuade Sarah McLachlan to do it because I think she's very talented." Reprise, the label that is releasing Fleetwood Mac's reunion album The Dance this Tuesday (Aug. 19), passed on releasing the Rumours tribute album. "Who knows [why]," says Fleetwood. "They might have thought it was confusing. I don't know. But Atlantic is basically the same company, and they got it." http://www.allstarmag.com/news/database/Archive/9708/15/news-cont.shtml#story1 ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Aug 1997 01:38:10 -0400 From: Kris Kane Subject: NJC: Request for info on Java Joe's schedule If anyone knows the schedule for Java Joe's in Ocean Beach, CA for the next couple of weeks, would you please send it to me. She's not scheduled. She will be able to talk ?s (Keyword:MuchMusic). Im not sure how it all works, but I know you get to interact somehow.Anybody else know more about this please inform us, the clueless(j/k) #2) The 'Jewel' mail -- I saw Brian got a letter also. I would also like to say I got a letter from the San Diego address. It basically says that your letters are returned to you because of poetry/songs/lyrics/etc. in it. Its so (thanks Mike for informing me) the artist doesn't get sued for playgarism & the like. Sure, you can send snail mails to the SD address-just don't stick anything more than a letter in the envelope or your probably going to get your mail back. For me, I got 2 letters back & that one signed by JE Jack. So this isn't a one person deal. It probably happens constantly. #3) MTV video awards -- I think we should keep the votes coming in. Then a day before(hehe) we should storm the voter ballots w/ Jewel votes(yeah!). Lets see if those WallFlowers can keep up w/ that. Also in my opinion(Im saying it again, OPINION) I think Jewel is up agains some competition in the Female & Best Video awards. Jameriquai is nominated all over the place - I think Jewel's going to get her awards, but Jameriquai is going to run out of there w/ a truck full. Thats it for now. The Star Log said this <> So, sounds like Jewel is going to be "joining in on AOL Live" right? Well, if she is...I don't know where or what time. But here is something else I found after going to Keyword: Much Music <<"I have blonde hair. I pluck my eyebrows. I have my father's nose, my mother's hands. I have crooked teeth, and green eyes. I play guitar. I used to get sick a lot. I like the color of wine. I've cheated on boyfriends. I've owned fake ID. But my hair is still blonde, and my teeth are still crooked, and I probably won't always like the color of wine." (ME, Jewel Kilcher, 1994) Above, is an excerpt from a poem by Jewel, called aptly enough, "ME." It can be found in the CD liner of her breakout first album, "Pieces Of You", and speaks to her human edge, her vulnerability - the essence of what has made her such a glowing success. Not bad for a girl raised on a farm in Alaska, who started performing for Eskimo villages at age 5. Yes, it's true. She's a classically trained vocalist. At the Interlochen fine arts academy in Michigan she sang opera (but preferred the blues). "Pieces Of You" clearly captures these influences. Yes, it's also true she lived out of her VW van for a while. It's the price she paid as an artist for being able to do what she loved. After waitressing, and other dead-end, jobs (often lost to too much chitter chatter with the customers), the verbose young Jewel chose the road, playing to coffeehouse crowds. These shows in sleepy San Diego eventually caught the attention of the L.A. recording community. Here is where Jewel's Cinderella story began, as her Microbus was replaced with limousines. It was time to leave Inner Change (the coffeehouse she started out at) for bigger venues, but not before doing two final live shows, (recorded by Atlantic), some of which can be heard on "Pieces Of You." The CD release party for "Pieces Of You" was held on February 28, 1995 and consisted of two sold out performances at San Diego's Hahn Cosmopolitan Theatre. THAT, of course, was just the beginning. She has since gone on to sell millions of copies of "Pieces Of You", and perform on all the major media venues.... including Saturday Night Live and The David Letterman Show. This summer is spent with the likes of and one of Jewel's idols - Tracy Chapman. That's right, Jewel's also part of the historic Lilith Fair tour, currently tearing its way across North America. Jewel brings immediacy & a sense of wonder to her songwriting and indeed, to her live performance. She drops into the MUCH environment once again on August 18th, for a live Intimate & Interactive performance, beginning at 9 PM EST. Don't miss it. (Sorry, no live chat.) Jewel has been working on a new release for 1998. The tentative title is "Fritz Creek Store." >> Ok...see that in bold print. It says "sorry, no live chat." Well, why the friggin' heck would Star Log say that she was going to be on AOL live? I don't know...but it makes me mad...I was wanting to see Jewel chat. Now I'm very let down :(. Oh, well...hopefully this cleared up some info that I and another had given the other day. It's all a hoax. Before I go into the main reason I'm writing. I just want to say something about the "human nature/habit" topic I posted on last time. I'm sorry for not replying to each person individually. Anyway, thank you so much for all your wonderful replies both to me and to the list. It was really nice to get letters from Heather, Larry, Kristy, JM, and Melissa. I've posted other places and usually end up with several less than pleasant responses. And that makes me apprehensive about posting anywhere. But everyone here is so warm hearted. Thank you. Three interpretations were given about Jewel's quotation: "What we call human nature in actuality is human habit." What seems most interesting to me is how each is from a different perspective. I thought of it from an introspective interpretation. So, for me, it raises questions about how we let what's inside us impact the world. Heather took a cultural view. There's lots of interesting evidence for that view. And JM looks at the quote as a scientific, externally observable, sort of question. That raises the entire 'nature versus nurture' debate. There's so much to say about each perspective and how they interrelate. But I won't bore everyone here with philosophical ramblings. Actually, I guess I will ramble on philosophically! There's something most of the criticisms of Jewel have in common: that her music is naive and she should "grow up". Sometimes it's more of a hidden idea, like when she's called 'ditsy' for the 'head in the clouds' sort of themes. All this is a generalization but it seems to reflect what, to me, is critics' dislike of optimistic idealism. And that's the thing which most impresses me about Jewel! In our generation (around Jewel's age) cynicism is the norm. But Jewel counters that trend. And personally I think she does an excellent job at defending idealism in a world of realists. I put my favorite example at the bottom of my Jewel web page at "http://www.angelfire.com/wa/JewelKilcher/" if you're interested. One of her songs, "I'm Sensitive", exemplifies this perspective on the world. Well, I know I get personally criticized the way Jewel does. (Except, fortunately, nobody criticizes me for my beliefs in major magazines!) And I guess others here have similar experience since you're on Jewel's mailing list named from that song. Jewel is not naive or stupid for her perspective. And neither is anyone here. "I have this theory that if we're told we're bad then that's the only idea we'll ever have. But maybe if we are surrounded in beauty, someday we will become what we see. 'Cause anyone can start a conflict. It's harder yet to disregard it. I'd rather see the world from a different angle. We are everyday angels." ~ Jewel Realists sit around and look at what is; that's enough to say we're bad. But is it really ever enough? The universe is so vast and the Milky Way galaxy is just a small part. And our Sun is only a small speck off in a corner of our galaxy. And the Earth's just a fraction of our solar system. And each of us only sees a small fraction of the Earth in our lifetime. And we only rememeber a small portion of our perceptions. And each of our lives is only a speck in the history of humanity. With such a small vantage point and so little knowledge, how can someone accurately claim to have a realistic view and criticize others as unrealistic? So what angle should we view the world from? I'd rather see everything for what it could be instead of merely what it is. And there's a value in doing that. I took a year off before grad school to teach math and science in the projects of an inner city. My kids aren't thought of very highly. People would hear what I was doing and thought I was just going to baby-sit them because, afterall, how much can you expect from people 'like that.' The realistic critics were just focused on what is. There were even teachers in the schools I went into who told me, "You expect too much of them. Why are you wasting your time teaching advanced stuff to kids who aren't going to college anyway?" You know, most of my students believed that realistic cynical attitude too. And that just made their lives worse. Not only are they surrounded by violence. But they seemed to feel powerless to change their destiny. For one class I taught some basic Physics 101 and brought in my first college Physics book to show them problems they could solve. There response was amazing! Suddenly they saw the world from a different angle! Rather than see where they are, they saw where they could be (off to college since they're already succeeding at stuff they'd be taught there!). And, to me, that shows the big difference between cynical realism and naive optimistic idealism. Yes, I suppose the realist will be "right" about many more lives than me. Unfortunately, not all those kids probably will make it out of the projects. But viewing life from another angle helps change life for the better. We should expect the best from everyone. Maybe we won't be correct about every actuality. But we create so many more possibilities with idealism. As each of us ages they'll be more criticisms about being "naive" and more pressure to finally "grow up." I'm only writing this now in hopes you'll look back at ideas like this including Jewel's music and consider facing life with optimistic idealism even if it's tougher. Well, I'm expecting a bunch of responses telling me it's more "complicated" or that "I'm hated." But "please be careful with me. I'm sensitive and I'd like to stay that way." (: I like so many of Jewel's songs that aren't on "Pieces of You." Many I've just heard from Real Audio files on the internet. Some I've only read the lyrics for and really want to hear! I don't have any angelfood. If anyone would be willing to copy some for me I'd be very grateful. I don't have things to trade but, of course, I'll pay the costs. I would appreciate it if you'd send me private e-mail if you could. There's one other thought I want to suggest since it's been posted a lot about. It looks like a Jewelstock 2 is impractical now (darn realism!). But maybe that's for the best. Jewel's very popular now and probably has so many things planned for the foreseeable future. But there will probably be some time when all the fame and constant attention fades. Perhaps it'd be best to wait until then to ask her. That way our attendance would mean more to her. That way she'd know there's something about her music which touches us and it's not just a fad. It's true there'd be fewer people eagerly seeking tickets. But our effort to create an event then might be more meaningful. I don't intend this as a criticism of the recent effort. If another Jewelstock happens now I'd definitely want to go! I'm just pointing out the positive side of waiting. Thank you for reading this super long letter! Most of the things that were bothering me have died down & I received an incredible amount of supportive private email. (I read it all & although I didn't reply, it meant a lot to me.) The Living Room Tour & subsequent interaction with the EDAs was incredibly great & reminded me of why I love most of the people here. Having Duff,Liz & Shelly stay with us on The Cape & all the wonderful guests who joined us really brought back all the good feelings I missed so much! Cindy Lee & Elizabeth spent some time with me in CT after the tour & they unintentionally reminded me of why I came here in the first place. I adore both of them & the LRT once again demonstrated what incredible things the EDAs can accomplish. I realize good & bad things happen in cycles around here & I've been told there's a real conscious effort to get this list back to an intelligent level & that volume has dropped to reasonable levels again. That's great & I'm very happy to hear it. I've discussed all that's gone on with Lenedra & she's been totally supportive of my decision to take a break. She's also given me good advice to consider regarding returning to the EDA fold. I am willing to give these lists another try, but I'll have to change the way I previously did things. As anyone who ever wrote me privately knows, I ALWAYS tried to answer questions & requests in a polite & respectful way. Due to my professional commitments with Jewel (& now Cindy Lee Berryhill & Elizabeth Hummel) among others, I'll no longer be able to reply to personal requests. This includes forwarding anything to Jewel or Lenedra or answering questions I've already answered on the list. Also, please remember that I am not part of the incredibly hard working list administration team. I cannot adress administrative concerns. I will continue to pass on info FROM Jewel & Lenedra to these lists, but NOT the other way around. Personal requests will be deleted unanswered & I sincerely hope this does not create anger toward me. It's nothing personal. It's simply the only way to keep this list a fun place to be for me. I no longer have the time to personally answer hundreds of private emails weekly. I know most of you are respectful of each other & all I ask is that you do the same for me. Just put yourself in my shoes BEFORE you send me a private email about anything. If its a personal request, chances are its inappropriate. If it's a request for specific information that can educate or help the EDAs as a group, then chances are I'll be most happy to try & answer it. That's a good guideline to follow. Encouraging words or friendly correspondance has always been & will continue to be welcome. I want to thank all of you who wrote with supporting words & to tell me how much my leaving made people stop & think. THAT's very good to know. There are few (if any) groups this large anywhere on the NET comprised of so many caring & intelligent people. I want to be one of you, but remember I'm a real person with feelings. I want to enjoy good friends & music, just like you. That's the main reason I'm here. I thank all of you who've continued to be supportive during my absence & hope a friendly relationship can continue from here on out. The EDAs are a powerful & wonderful group of people. Use that power to promote friendship & intelligent music related discussion. Or was there no surprise at all and Gian, a secret Ticketbastard employee, was just enticing people to buy tickets to the second show? :) Curiously Nathan dogslife@bigfoot.com "Always find a way to call out of another the highest in themselves." - Jewel ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Aug 1997 16:01:23 -0400 From: Gianfranco Covello Subject: Re: So Gian, what was the LF surprise? >Now that the Toronto LF has come and gone, I feel I must ask our dear >friend Gian what this big ol' surprise was going to be. > >Or was there no surprise at all and Gian, a secret Ticketbastard >employee, was just enticing people to buy tickets to the second show? >:) Ok, i guess i should tell you all, i'm a TicketBastard employee and wanted to entice you all to buy tix to both shows, i don't know why i gave into they're evil ways, but it was ... brainwashing, yeah that's it.. Ok, really, the surprise was to get Tara Maclean to do a private show, but her schedule didn't comply... but we did get to talk to Dave Holmes who is a Nettwerk artist manager who is concentrating on managing Tara, and there will be very cool things happening with that :-) So the backup plan was to see Holly McNarland at the Horseshoe the night before, i did go to that show and met up with many EDA's who came a night earlier, now lemme tell you all, Holly McNarland live is a can't miss oppertunity, i'll let you all off the hook for not going, for now, but if i hear of anyone not going to see her live when she's in your area, there will be hell to pay :-) she is that good, ask anyone who was there, i'm getting the shivers as i type remembering that night :-) so be warned, i have ways of hearing about these things ;-) Ok, i'll probably be writing up a few posts about my weekend with the freaky EDA people :-) talk to you all soon! - -Gian (gotta love us canalians) Covello- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Aug 1997 16:15:09 -0400 (EDT) From: Buddha10Ft@aol.com Subject: Re: NJC: The Cat Mary & Joy Eden Harrison In a message dated 97-08-17 22:16:04 EDT, you write: << Anyway, The Cat Mary. We (Shelly, Kaili, Chelsey and my friend Chris) saw them open for Joy last night and I was stunned at the talent. What are they like? 10,000 Maniacs with a powerful male lead singer. In the band is a violinist, cellist, string bassist, guitarist, drummer and keyboard. They are an awesome, awesome, awesome band who is sure to get big soon. The Cat Mary has one album _Her High, Lonesome Days_ but it is only sold through them. >> Oh god, finally someone else who likes The Cat Mary. I heard their song "Sweet Kness And Backbone" a couple of years ago on a CMJ sampler, and looked for their album for months. I finally found it in a Best Buy in Morrow, GA. I instantly fell in love with the music (especially their rendition of "Ode To Billy Joe") and have been patiently awaiting new material from them. BTW, I don't know if you have the album yet, but there are only three official members. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Aug 1997 14:41:38 -0400 (EDT) From: Imagin1515@aol.com Subject: new cd? hey all, when is jewel's new c.d. coming out. i thought it was supposed to be aug. 97 but i quess not. please respond. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Aug 1997 16:39:22 -0400 (EDT) From: TresPeachy@aol.com Subject: argh!! njc Ihave to get this out.. I wanted to say hello to all of you. First off, I am a 25 year old Male EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) from Indiana. I am somewhat new to this list now, but I did subscribe to the digest version for some time until there was so much talk about the Spice Girls. Anyway, I feel as if I have been an EDA at heart ever since I heard Jewel sing, which admittedly was the first week that WWSYS was aired on MTV. Since then I've collected about as many RA, WAV, and MP3 files of Jewel that I could get. I also had never realized that a CD could wear out, I am on my second POY. I would really be interested in getting my hands on some more angelfood if anybody would like to help with that. My favorite song has to be Absence of Fear, and the only version I have is a very bad Real Audio version. But I would certainly like to get ahold of about any other tapes, if somebody who does that could explain how that works. I look forward to many interesting discussions, and thank you all just for existing. Emm Gryner Emm Rulez! Even in the rain. I caught a cold. Prayed for Cold Song in Jewel set (it _was_ after all Toronto). Buy this CD now, please, this is pure selfishness, I want another from her. :-) Lhasa de Sela When she smiles, stars wink out in envy; she was the main source of sunshine both days. Lhasa and her band do traditional mexican songs in spanish and a couple in french. Its probably not terribly commercially accessible, but well worth the effort. If you strain hard you can the gaelic influence several hundred (a thousand?) years later. Bought the CD on Day Two. Dayna Manning "Local" (Stratford, Ontario is close to Toronto, sorta) girl does good. Dayna was really on today. I've been following her for about a year an a half now (she did an opener for The Pursuit of Happiness at Lee's Palace). She's grown quite a bit since then. For one she's much more confident on stage and much, much more consistent. If you pick up Nettwerk's Brewed Awakening (they're cheap, cheap, cheap so pick up all the Cafe Culture cds: Percolator, Slowbrew, Brewed Awakening). Indigo Girls They rocked. Whatever people might think of them or their music, they sure know how to get a crowd going. They brought Sarah and Jewel out for two (I didn't know the first one - if anyone knows pls post), the second was Closer to Fine (also with Meredith Brooks and Julia Fordham). Jewel Whoa, media circus in the photo pit, it was wall to wall, er, stage to barrier). It was a nice set. I have problems with the sound at Molson Ampitheatre. I could not hear a single word of Dancing Barefoot. I've heard other things there, its not the sound guy. He should probably win an award for making things sound like music and not white noise. Sarah Sarah looks so darn happy. She was positively glowing. I'm really glad this has all worked out so well for her. Poised to break the lucrative US market, a successful tour, well beyond expectation, an obvious strong bond with Ash. It looks really good on her! And this was definitely a Sarah crowd! Sarah Set List - Days One _AND_ Two (a) ? with Indigo Girls + Jewel (b) Closer to Fine, Indigo Girls, Jewel, Meredith, Julia Fordham (1) Hold On (2) Good Enough (3) Wait (4) Angel (Vince Jones on Piano) (5) Waiting (6) Sweet Surrender (7) Building a Mystery (8) Possession/Path of Thorns (? I'm not 100% that she slipped into PoT here) encore (9) Ice Cream w. audience (only Sarah, Ash, and bass player) (10) Big Yellow Taxi (with Sarah, Indigo Girls, Meredith Brooks, Emm Gryner, Julia, Dayna Manning, Lhasa, Camille, Sarah Lee, etc.) Day II Emm Gryner I was so disappointed. Traffic, then a train delay caused me to miss all but the last few bits of Hook Machine. Oddly, and thankfully it isn't _still_ running through my head! Warning to dorky A&R ppl, be nice to Emm, or she will write a song that will stick in your and everyone else's head for days and days until finally... *sigh* Sorry Emm. I did catch a cold for her the first day so I don't feel too bad, except for the cold part. Lhasa de Sela Say one was great, Day two was amazing. She made me happy and smilely even with a 6.5 Richter headache. Lhasa is the sun, and she wasn't even in the east. "The Courage of Poncho Villa" is a wonderful, inspiring song about the Mexican Revolution. I was made to feel like it was Cinco de Mayo and I needed to fire pistols in the air. Maravilloso! "We're Still Laughing" (en francais), a song about how everyone is doing something terrible and must be stopped and how we always seem to be right. While in french, she seems to me like a darker (vocally), younger Edith Piaf (younger than when EP was in her prime). They ended with Los Pesas a Christmas song from Mexico). Dayna Manning This was what really confirmed for me that she's grown, it was a very consistent performance in comparison to yesterday and thats about the third in a row. She used to have off days. On the main stage again (due to rain) this performance was much better attended. Julia Fordham Good, but like Andy Duncan yesterday, I wasn't just in the mood. Indigo Girls They managed to wring the rain out of people somehow and motivate the crowd again. Other artists much be very grateful to have them as an opener! Jewel I liked Day One's performance better. The sounds was actually better in the 200's than the 100's. Still couldn't hear Dancing Barefoot, but it was really, really nice to hear Last Dance Rodeo, which is my favourite song of her new material. Sarah I realize that there were filming and looking for backup shots, but the exact repeat of the set list was a little disappointing. Still, I think the audience did better on Ice Cream (my favourite Sarah Song) than Friday. YMMV, James. ========================================================================== James McGarry | jmcgarry@UoGuelph.CA - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- What sets worlds in motion is the interplay of differences, their attractions and repulsions; life is plurality, death is uniformity. - - Octavio Paz ========================================================================== ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #655 ***************************
