A WHILE back I sent a letter to Jewel (before I was an EDA), along with some poetry I had written and a small book I thought she would be very interested to read (oh, and a picture, for reference ;) ). Anyway, yesterday I got a letter from "Jewel," so at first I was really excited. Well, as it turns out, inside was a letter from JE Jack, the coordinator of her fan mail (is he/she an EDA???). Well here it is if you want to see. Dear Brian(me), Thank you for your warm and gracious support of "Jewel"(italicized in real letter). She is deeply appreciative of the letters and gifts she receives from fans and hopes you are inspired by her work. Your letter is being returned to you because her attorney compels us to return all unsolicited songs, poetry, lyrics, scripts, and the like to their creators. I regret that "Jewel" and her management are unable to review any unsolicited proposals. Thank you for your understanding. Please continue to enjoy "Jewel"'s music. We wish you well in all your endeavors to make this a happier, healthier world. Sincerely, (signature -- not real) JE Jack Coordinator of "Jewel" Fan Mail Well, disappointed as I was, there was still very good news(at least the possibility of it) to this. They only returned the poems, which means they must have kept the letter, the picture, and the book. Now that I think about it, they could not have sent the book back... I had to have it all in a special envelope to send. I would hate to have this person's job; it's difficult to return heartfelt works, but I fully understand. This to go along with the article I thought would mention EDA's I was interviewed for at Houston LF :(. Anyway, I'll stop yappin'. :) Brian -- the Angel that Thinks a Lot who is going to keep the two cool angel stamps that were on the outside of the letter :) "I especially like the 'please continue to enjoy Jewel's music' part." - -- me ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 Aug 1997 05:55:57 -0700 From: "Adrian du Plessis" Subject: Re: MTV video music awards Karyn asked about Nikos -- I saw Jewel in Portland this March 30 and I'm pretty sure she said Nikos was there. Northwest EDA gathering, let me know if you have any travel or accomodation or whatever questions. Maybe we can arrange carpools and help for people depending on where everybody is coming from. It's only two weeks now 'til the Living Room Tour starts up again with Cindy Lee and Elizabeth playing here on August 29. The east coast LRT dates were a smash and the west coast dates are lining up and will be equally memorable. I've posted before about the LRT (and will again as we get closer). For now, here's some info excerpted from a release I've sent out about the all day music fest we'll have the day after the LRT. So there'll be lots to do here, besides swim in lakes or the ocean, count sheep, look for deer, and go to the artists' market etc. etc. Hope to see you EDAs here for the Labor Day weekend. e-mail me (Adrian) at howenow@imagen.net if you have ANY questions... NO TROUBLE AT THIS HENHOUSE - INDIAN SUMMERSTOCK MUSIC FESTIVAL KICKS OFF THE LABOR DAY WEEKEND! SALT SPRING ISLAND, CANADA -- On this beautiful island off Canada's Pacific coast, the poultry house needs rebuilding. This is where, each year at the Fall Fair, people show off their prized chickens and hens and rabbits. The Farmer's Institute, whose purpose is "to ensure the continued existence of rural life and the practice of agriculture", needs funds for framing lumber, sheathing, siding and trusses. This is just one of the unique elements that's combined to launch Indian Summerstock, a music festival steeped in the D.I.Y. (do-it-yourself) ethos and the spirit of community. Inspired by such artists as Sarah McLachlan, whose Lilith Fair is this summer's most celebrated musical tour, and Jewel, who represents a cultural philosophy that's been tagged "radical anti-cynicism" by Interview magazine, a new non-profit society, TSUNAMI (The Society for Unsung New Art and Music Innovators), aims to contribute to the Farmer's Institute fund-raising efforts and build on its own foundations "to promote and foster the development and appreciation of unsung" artists and musicians. Founded by three British Columbia artists, TSUNAMI's launch will be a day long concert that begins about high noon on the fairgrounds of the Farmer's Institute on Salt Spring Island, B.C. (located between the Canadian cities of Vancouver and Victoria, and, on the U.S. side, Seattle). Called Indian Summerstock to mark the season, it's a celebration of varied and talented musical artists. The Indian Summerstock festival grew out of an original musical event, The Living Room Tour (see attached LRT press release). This summer, Cindy Lee Berryhill and Elizabeth Hummel, two of the brightest stars in the exciting San Diego coffeehouse and concert scene, have been on "one of the most curious and ambitious experiments of recent musical memory" -- touring the living rooms of North America. Their intimate Living Room Tour has been featured on CNN and in other U.S. media including an upcoming mention in Time magazine. Musician friends of the singer Jewel, Hummel and Berryhill launched their LRT schedule through word of mouth and the internet mailing list of the Every Day Angels, or EDAs, as Jewel's on-line fans are known. =20 Indian Summerstock, adopting a similar grassroots approach, will welcome: Cindy Lee Berryhill, Rolling Stone praises her musical arrangements as "wondrous" and says her unique voice, "squealing and swooping=85 is a= natural gas"; internationally acclaimed as a witty, romantic and wild fusion of pet sounds from Brian Wilson to Bob Dylan and Patti Smith Elizabeth Hummel, named "Best Folk or Acoustic" Artist at the 1996 San Diego Music Awards; strains of Appalachian bluegrass as well as Pacific Northwest character shine through her emotionally honest tunes that journey from Hank Williams' territory through the Velvet Underground The Reachers, ex-Blue Shadows Jeffrey Hatcher (guitar/vocals), Barry Muir (bass, vocals) and Jay B. Johnson (drums) have teamed up with Wendy Bird (guitar/vocals) of Los Durangos fame to record a debut CD, Nudge; a rocking country-folk-pop band strong on melody and harmony Ralph, dig that crazy bongo beat of Ralph Alfonso (vocals, goatee), Tom Harrison (bongos, vocals), Michael Rummen (guitar, hair), and Graham Howell (sax and jazz flute); stars of the Folk Pop Explosion tour, the beatnik jazz combo Ralph revels in sounds from The Kinks to Kerouac Ronnie Scott and the Royal City Wranglers, one of Vancouver's most talented and tasteful guitar players, Ronnie will bring a roundup of musical stylings to the festival -- from country to blues to blazing rock; his group will preside as the Indian Summerstock house band Kevin House, this rising singer/songwriter crafts compelling tunes and intelligent lyrics in the tradition of Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen Lisa Maxx, not confirmed, but anticipated, as a performer is this powerful Salt Spring vocalist; tracing country music roots from the likes of that sweetheart of the rodeo, Emmylou Harris, Lisa sings inspired songs of love and sorrow. Location: The Farmer's Institute Fairgrounds can be found at 351 Rainbow Road, 10 minutes up the road from Ganges, Salt Spring Island, B.C. If it's sunny, the festival stage will be in the orchard. If it rains the concert will move into a barn with fresh hay bales for a back-drop.=20 Date: August 30 1997 Time: High noon 'til midnight (approx.) -- we'll check the sun and stars Other on-site attractions: There'll be refreshments on site and a big island barbecue starting at 6 p.m. Along with the country barbecue, there'll be a goods and services auction starting at 7:30 p.m. that's also put on by, and for the benefit of, the Farmer's Institute. The reporter for Rollingstone who mentioned Jewel being snotty received a major award some where herself. However she forgot to ask the Lilith "Females" why they continued to eat YOPLAIT(c) as it caused the choking deaths of many skunks because of the container it was in. Certainly you have seen news reports of the skunks walking around with the tight little container on their head and they cannot see or smell or function. This is very similar to the time you found your household pet strangled by their collar in a chain link fence or tree limb. This morning on my paper route I saw one of these unfortunate animals with a YOPLAIT container on its head wandering about the dumpster where apartment owners throw their trash. The skunk eats the ants that are enjoying the milk and fruit products and then because their are so many ants the skunks pushes its head in further[wanna see my ant bites?] OK I managed to get in front of the skunk and pulled on the container{YOPLAIT] and it did not budge. It was going further down the skunks neck..well I grabbed the skunk and grabbed the container and had to pull really hard to get it off. Add YOPLAIT to your environmental conscious products like six pack holders that strangle sea birds and always remember to measure your collar when you put it on your pet. Ok, I know this is my 2nd post on this subject within an hour, but I just realized something. If I remember right, there are like 1500+ people on this list. Take this scenario...1500 people...no even 1000 people each vote one(1) time per day for a week. That is 7000 votes for Jewel's YWMFM video. Now, the awards are scheduled for September 4th. That leaves at least 17 days from Sunday August 17th(which is when I'm writing this) to vote. If even 1000 people vote once per day until September 13th starting today, there will be 17000 votes for Jewel. Now, I think if there are that many votes, there's NO chance that she can lose, or even come up 2nd place for that matter. I know that even some people log onto the Internet 2, 3 or more times per day. Whenever you log on, go to "http://www.mtv.com/tubescan/vma97/vc_index.html", click the button for Jewel, then go to the bottom. I don't post much but I feel I need to share my thoughts with someone. So I thought this might be a good place to start. Hope no one minds to much. Please forgive me, my mind wanders sometimes, in such odd directions. It's hard for me to write sometimes. I guess that's why I don't post here much. Once again I am sitting at home in front of my computer. Feeling a bit down and lost. (What's new?) The thing is that I've met someone recently who have become a consumeing factor in my life. But before you say "Good for him" or whatever, let me tell you my woes. We where co-workers for some time but never really got to know each other till recently. I went out to a locale bar with a few of the guys from work and she was there also. Well, we got to talking and just seems to hit it off real well. After going out to clubs and what-not together, are friendship started to form, till one day I realized I couldn't stop thinking about her. I knew from the start that she was married, but, I couldn't stop myself for falling for her. The thing is that her husband is in the army and was shipped out to Germany about a year ago. From what was said by some mutual friend of ours, it would seem that they where having problems even before he went overseas, and now it's gotten worse. But any ways, to make a long story short(I know, To late). We got a bit drunk one night and ended up sleeping together. While I must admit that I was glad of this at the time, I also feel bad about it. I mean, hell, she's a married woman and I was raised to respect marriage and everything. But I can't change how I feel about her. No matter what my mind tells me, my heart yearns for her, and I feel lost without her. I'm I such a bad person? For loveing a married woman? I wish I could just hold her in my arms every night, I wish I was the one that was there for her when she needed someone, I wish it was me that she truly loved. But I fear that this is just a dream, that one day I will wake up and find out that she never even existed, except in my mind. I know that the good book says that you shouldn't covet thy naybors(spelling?? Man my spelling sucks, can't even spell such a common word) wife. But god its hard. So awful hard not to just give in to my love for her..... DO NOT FLAME ME! i am only psting this because i think it is important to see other people's opinions of jewel. it reminds of an old wine-growers proverb that says if you drink only your own wines you become comfortable with them and they dissolve in quality. <> Chapter II (Sorry, Neil Simon) I'm the guilty party who called the family jewel (as in "kick him in the family jewel[s]") an "a-hole." I don't know Jewel, never met her, don't want to. My wife has the album, I've listened to it too many times (not really that many, but too many when you don't connect with the music one jot). She's got a decent voice (but she seems a little too sly with some of her vocals, listen to her sing "Who Will Save Your Soul," you'll hear that she's pulling some stunts with her voice, trying to convey emotion in a sneaky way, but it doesn't work.). But that's not why I think she's an a-hole. She's pretentious. She thinks she really has something important to say. She has her poetry in the little booklet that comes in her CD's (family) jewel case, so I read it. I'm not much of a poet, and I'm not much of a literature buff, but I know what crap is. There's one line where Jewel says, "I have bad teeth, but I have large breasts" Thanks for the insight, babe. I've seen the cleavage, and the teeth (as have most of the carbon-based lifeforms on this planet). I was able to discern these things, too. How about we discuss the intellect and not your bra size next time? I read a couple more grafs of this phlegm, and listened to her lyrics (that embarrassing song that discusses her brushing her (bad) teeth, fixing some coffee, putting on her bunny slippers and finished the Times crossword before watching Baywatch because she misses her man), and decided that she's as deep as a puddle. The kicker was one time she was on a talk show and she was wearing a low-cut blouse (to show everyone both lobes of her brain, I'm assuming). Someone was ogling her breasts (I want to say it was Howard Stern), and she ripped him for doing so. My thoughts on the matter: If you want someone to ogle your boobies, then wear something low-cut. You don't want them to do so, then wear a burlap sack. She wears see-through clothes at the music awards, then gets p.o.'d when someone treats her like a sex object. Here's my evaluation of this math problem: Pretentious alternachick+modest talent+hypocracy=a-hole. Here endeth the lesson. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ oh, let me tell you, he learned me. nah. poor cynic. and his poor wife. and if he is so intelligent, then he should check his spelling. luna ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Aug 97 08:46:04 GMT From: st_kuo@ix.netcom.com Subject: Re: Jewel and the MTV video awards -- how do you vote? JD ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Aug 1997 12:01:51 PDT From: "Steve Lee" Subject: Toronto Lilith Fair Review Well I just have to say that this being my first EDA Gathering, I had the best time! I went to the concert not knowing anyone and my only hope was to try and spot one of those blue EDA t-shirts in a crowd of 15,000. This was a lot easier than I thought, I saw Eric "CrashBoy" and went up and introduced myself, he led me over to meet everyone else, Liz, Mia, Rachel, Tom, Tammy, Tom, Bob, Mike, James, Marco, Marion, And I'm sure there are more that I've forgotten (Sorry!). We finally were allowed into the amphitheater. We walked around for awhile and went to the various booths. Now came the fun part, the RAIN and let me tell you there was a lot of it! The guys selling the $3 ponchos were making a fortune!!! I ended up going to my seats which were covered and talking with some of the EDA's. It was raining so hard and I was already soaked that I gave up on the village acoustic stage. The rain got so bad that it started to come in on an angle since I was near the back of the 300's with Eric we were still getting soaked. We both decided that we were going to move up a bit, we ended up moving to the middle of the 200's. The rain was good for one thing though, it swamped the B-stage so Lhasa, Dayna Manning, and the Wild Strawberries got to play on the main stage. Dayna Manning was great she opened with her single off her cd "volume one". Wild Strawberries, Merideth Brooks, and Shawn Colvin all had great sets to, but the Indigo Girls were the first to get the crowd on their feet. They had a great set but the big surprise was when they asked Jewel and Sarah to come out and help them sing a song who's name alludes me at this time. They also asked for for everyone to come out and help them sing "Closer To Fine" Jewel and Sarah both sang a verse, Sara Lee played a solo on a flute, And then Jewel did her yodeling thing and the crowd went nuts! Jewel also put on a great performance. she opened with Near You Always the first verse done without guitar. I'm not exactly sure on the set-list but she played quite a few songs including: Deep water, Satellite, Down, Love me just leave me alone, WWSYS, YWMFM, Stranger. She ended her set with her new single Foolish Games and she played the full version! Her whole set was great there was only one song where her guitar was so loud that it was hard to hear her voice. Sarah ended the show she came out and did a few of her big hits, Good Enough, Possession. She put a lot of emphasis on to the new album and played a few songs off of it, Building a Mystery, Sweet Surrender, Angel. She also came back for a final encore, she played Ice Cream and the crowd ended up singing the chorus for her! For the very last song of the night she asked everyone to come back out on stage and they all sang Joni Mitchell's "Big Yellow Taxi" The entire show was great and well worth the money. After the show we all met outside and we decide to go and get something to eat since most of use were starving because we could not afford to spend $4.00 on a Pepsi! We decided to go to Burger King and what was supposed to be a quick take out meal ended up being a sit down meal for 45 min. After we had eaten we all went back to the hotel and sat around talking for awhile. Everyone managed to get at least 6 hours sleep before having to wake up and get ready to go to the second Lilith Fair. This post has gone on long enough look for Part 2 for the review of the Second Lilith Fair.
