I loved Jewel on the show, but I now remember why I don't watch the show. Those two hosts are idiots! They kept cutting off Jewel when she was talking to get their stupid little comments in. Kathy Lee was the worst of the two of them. At least Regis said that she'll be a huge star one day. Kathy Lee tried to pretend that she knew something about music by asking her if there was some Joni Mitchel influence in her music. I thought it was great when Jewel told her that her influences were Russian poets and writers. It put those two uneducated half-wits in their place. Mike Michigan Angel ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Aug 1997 12:12:52 -0700 From: HYPER Subject: Stuff that makes you cry / Least favorite Jewel song This is in response to some questions asked a few months ago. I noticed this letter in my outbox and somehow it wasn't getting sent because I'd forgot to queue in. Anyway, here are my answers (anybody can respond to these if they want to): WHAT SONGS MAKE YOU CRY? I tend to cry when I listen to: 1.) "I'm Sensitive" by Jewel (duh...hehehe) 2.) "Weird" & "With You In Your Dreams" by Hanson 3.) "Nowhere To Go" by Melissa Etheridge (I don't guess it's a sad song but it makes me sad) WHAT IS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE JEWEL SONG? My least favorite Jewel song is "Daddy". I know it has a good message & I agree with it, but I never like to listen to it because it's so harsh. I think I've only listened to it 1 or 2 times. I know I listened when I first got the CD on my birthday this year (I'd already joined this list by then) but I can't remember if I did again. I just really didn't like the song. Granted I write songs that sound harsh but I wouldn't want to ever publish them or let people read them because I'd feel embarassed & stupid (I write lots of better ones too). I keep my harsh ones where no one can get to them because they are just for me to write and read when I feel angry, sad, upset, etc. I don't think any of them are quite that harsh though. :-) Most are about my problems, fears, etc and how people control what you think, believe, and feel. Karen SLAMM -San Diego Aug 6.1997 http://www.slammsd.com Reel News Takin' It To the Streets Cindy Lee Berryhill and Elizabeth Hummel get up close and personal on their new tour. by Andrew Altschul Sitting at a table with Cindy Lee Berryhill and Elizabeth Hummel on a Saturday afternoon in Ocean Beach, you might be convinced that there was nothing they would rather do. Berryhill glances dreamily at the ceiling and fidgets incessantly with her sunglasses while expounding at length on the cyclical nature of the music business. Hummel, hands flat on the table, eyes earnest, educates you about prummerflora: the weeds and flowers which spring up from the ruins of bombed-out cities. For the moment, both seem oblivious to the group of loyal -- no, make that devoted; no, make that ardent -- fans sitting only yards away, eyeing them hungrily. Some of these fans have come from as far as Chicago, New York, and Oklahoma, to hear these two singer/songwriters and to bask in the San Diego music scene. If Berryhill or Hummel are feeling their attention strained, they don't show it. Eventually, they will take turns sitting and chatting with the fans, laughing and trading stories, returning to your table as if from a casual telephone conversation with Mom. Hardly the "typical" musician behavior, you think. These two actually seem to enjoy all of this "face to face." They'd better. As this issue hits the streets, Berryhill and Hummel will be up to their necks in face-to-face, having embarked on one of the most curious and ambitious experiments of recent musical memory. It's called the Living Room Tour -- and that's exactly what it is. They're touring living rooms. Through August 11, with a final date on the 29th, Berryhill and Hummel will be playing private concerts in fans' homes. The tour starts on the eastern tip of Long Island and wraps up with a date on an island in British Columbia, and will fulfill the fantasies of hundreds of fans along the way. "These are people who want us to play and they're making sure that it happens," says Hummel, admiringly. "There's no middle people involved." "At first, Elizabeth and I were a little bit tentative about the idea," Berryhill adds. "But there's some kind of a thing with these people. You know that it's okay. There's a trust element." The people to whom she refers (a chatty subset stationed at the tables nearby) call themselves the Every Day Angels (EDA) and might just represent a coming shift in the relationship between performer, music industry, and fan - -- or, at least, two of the three. Based on the tenaciously democratic Internet, the EDA is an international network of music fans who have gravitated to the music of a number of San Diego artists, and whose shared tastes and digital acquaintances have grown into strong friendships off-line. "After a very short while we became fans of one another, too," says Larry Greenfield, a Los Angeles native in town for the weekend to hear the music he loves. Greenfield is indirectly responsible for the Living Room Tour, having arranged the prototype concert in Boston this past spring during a hiatus in Berryhill's and Hummel's touring schedule. Berryhill recalls, "We had a couple of days off in Boston. We called Larry and said, 'We know there's a number of these EDAs and if they'd be interested in putting together a little gathering, we'd be happy to play.'" Within 24 hours, Greenfield had put the word out to the group and arranged for the two musicians to perform at a fan's home. EDAs and subscribers to Berryhill's mailing list traveled from all over New England to hear the four-hour show. After returning to San Diego, the two musicians and tour coordinator, Bart Mendoza, set up a string of eleven more Living Room shows in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, and Massachusetts, as well as two private shows at a Long Island club and the late August appearance on Salt Spring Island, near Vancouver. "I have fans all over the United States," says Berryhill, "and I don't necessarily think that I would put out, even on my mailing list, and say, 'Why don't you put together a group of people and I'll do a house party.' I don't know if I would trust them." Indeed, in this end-of-the-century time of celebrity stalkers and Internet abductions, the trend seems to be toward increased distance between artist and audience, not the tearing down of that barrier these events suggest. And Berryhill and Hummel, who have both played countless shows in the small clubs and coffeehouses which demand greater intimacy than some musicians prefer, could well be excused for drawing the line at such a close encounter. Like Berryhill, however, Hummel sees the EDA group as a positive, trusting environment that disarms her healthy skepticism. And that vibe, she says, goes hand in hand with something the group appreciates in her music: She calls it, "Hope." "There's a shared sense of value that they share with each other and they sense in our music," Hummel says. "It's some kind of positive, after-grunge thing." The origins of the Every Day Angels, like so many things on the Internet, are rather nebulous. At one time, they existed as a Web-based Tori Amos fan club, but soon flocked to the music of San Diego's Jewel Kilcher. The membership has ballooned to over 1,000, with EDAs in Norway, Brazil and Germany, as well as the U.S. Various EDAs have amassed extensive archives of taped Jewel concerts and have traveled all over the country (and the world) to see her perform. Their interest in Jewel's musical beginnings led them to San Diego - -- to Java Joe's, in Ocean Beach, and PB's now-defunct Innerchange -- and eventually turned them on to Berryhill and Hummel, as well as other well-known performers and Jewel-pals such as Steve Poltz, Gregory Page, and Joy Eden Harrison. While the styles of the artists vary, the EDAs sense something in common with all of their work. And a stamp of approval from just a few members of the group can bring the others running. "I think that there's a connection with hope," Hummel says. "They connect with Jewel's music because of a sense of positive message. There's a thread of that in the San Diego music scene. A sense of people helping each other out." The loving attention of the EDA, and the resulting Living Room Tour, come at promising times in the careers of both Hummel and Berryhill. Hummel, whose first album, The Cauldron, was released in 1995 on Brew Records, has been writing music and talking to record labels about how, when and where to do the next one. A fixture on the local music scene, Hummel was named Best Acoustic Artist at the 1995 San Diego Music Awards. She's been playing regular gigs this summer at Claire de Lune in North Park and The Ould Sod in Normal Heights, as well as shows at Java Joe's, Brick By Brick, and others. She says that touring with Berryhill this spring introduced her to many new fans and had a strongly positive effect on her music. "There's something inspiring about touring with another woman, as friends, doing the same thing, eschewing the competition," she says. Berryhill is also shopping for a new record label, having outgrown local indie Cargo Records which released the last two of her four records, 1994's Garage Orchestra and 1996's Straight Outta Marysville. Both albums were critical successes, earning rave reviews in the national press for Berryhill's eclectic, Patti-Smith-meets-Brian-Wilson songwriting and unconventional arrangements. Since the spring tour, she has also spent most of the summer in town, with a regular Wednesday-night show at Java Joe's. The Living Room Tour is a new adventure in her decade-long career, which began in New York's mid-'80s "anti-folk" scene. "I have no intention of quitting touring the 'proper' club way," she says. "But this is a neat alternative to it. It's a breath of fresh air." Both performers see the EDA phenomenon as one symptom of a larger change taking place in the music industry. For Hummel, this change is a direct result of the early-'90s alternative music explosion, which grew to monstrous proportions before imploding shortly after the death of Nirvana's Kurt Cobain. The more hopeful attitude offered by many local and national artists reminds her of prummerflora, doggedly sprouting from grunge's ruins. "I see it like plants between the cracks," she says, smiling at her analogy. "New growth." "It's a perfect, weird story," Berryhill tosses out, still fiddling with the glasses. "Ultimately, when you're an 11-year-old kid and you're writing your first song, you think, 'Wow, I want to play this for somebody!' That's what matters." Whether the Living Room Tour is the beginning of a major shift in how artists relate to their fans, or simply an interesting footnote to the ongoing history of American music, Elizabeth Hummel and Cindy Lee Berryhill are in for an experience to which few musicians can lay claim. It's a grass-roots, D.I.Y. undertaking that flies in the face of what record companies might call "sound marketing and promotion." But if the moment is right -- and these two women and the EDA think it is -- it just might work. "It's an interesting time right now," Berryhill says. "People are looking for a new millennial beginning. It's a dawning time. At those times, we see new things rising." She holds up her sunglasses, now broken in two pieces, and shrugs. She'll just have to meet the dawn without them. Viet Nam was gorgeous, but I prefer the comforts of home. Now, before I left, several people sent money for International Tour Booklets. Because I had not received everything before my departure, I left this project in the hands of my friend, Nick, who has apparently lost all brain cells and majorly fouled this up. First off, I am sorry that this has happened. This seemed easy enough to trust with someone who can manage a web server's daily activities. Second, I will not let this problem remain in its current state. Upon return, Nick and I will be sitting down to discuss the problem, particularly what happened, and then I will be fixing it. I have no intention of screwing you over (as I'm sure you might be concluding). Quite honestly, I am not sure where the money is as Nick refuses to tell me over the phone. He says "we need to talk". Needless to say that, if necessary, I will pay for these out of my pocket to keep my word. Please don't lose faith. Give me a chance to correct the problem. As mentioned, I have no idea HOW this happened or WHY. And I obviously misplaced my trust in Nick. If you ordered and sent money for international tour booklets, please send an email to PRIVATE@THESPIS.COM, letting me know that you're still out there. Nick doesn't know that this address exists, thus, he will not possibly have a chance to see these and screw things up any more than they already are. I might be interested in buying it and I'd sure like to know what it's called if there is a separate version for the public. Thank you many times over :) Seth Fulmer A.K.A. Last time I saw the WWSYS video Jewel was in a public restroom and the last time I saw the FG video, there were "the kimono girls and the horse." I'm sure it couldn't have been the same song. One was WWSYS and the other was FG. Listen more carefully next time. WWSYS and FG shouldn't be easy to confuse. - -Caroline, the Innocent Angel >I was watching MuchMusic some weeks ago and I saw jewel's video (WWSYS) >and it didnt had anything like jewel riding a horse so i thought it was >strange. >Next day i was watching Mtv and I saw the vidoe (again of WWSYS) but this >time there was the kimono girls and the horse. >So, am I wrong or there is 2 versions of that song. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Aug 1997 17:47:06 -0600 (MDT) From: J Oveson Subject: Rare Angels '96 - who told me they have it? Bartholomew) Subject: njc: another friggin' lrt review for anyone interested in this: i had some of the best days of my summer in the last two weeks. the performers, the beer, the hosts/hostesses, and above all...the friends. i would go into an amazingly long post about how the eda's are the most amazing bunch of people, but alas, you all know this. i hit four of the dates while taking a week off of work, including campbell's in nj, selena/proven-stock in pa, cape concert thanks to alan and amy jo, and "rockin' in raynham" thanks to dennis (the baaa-stard). all were different, and all were amazing. none to be missed. cindy and elizabeth were so much more than i remembered. that dulcimer kicks some serious a$$. playing the requests is something that not many performers do, and it shows so much caring and character to do that. thanks to the two performers who came all of the way out here with sometimes mere hours of sleep and many of driving just to put on these shows. immaculate. sorry folks from all over couldn't make it, but those who did were old and new to me. seeing mike again is always an experience. the perfect foil to dennis (thanking all that matters). finally someone who can handle him (you know what i mean). this was also the first time i met list owner jeff. great guy. hope to see him again soon. we owe him so much for keeping this list in existance. l.l.larry is more than i could have imagined. his rendition of the apple at the cape is one for the archives. see you in november. the german's were a welcomed suprise (hey marian and marko!). treat these guys like family up there in toronto guys...they are. and offer them a place to stay! but don't let marko near the horse-shoe pits...he'll spank you...i think he's a hustler. cool guys. great to meet you both. albert and chris, had a ball driving these guys around (olp rocks!!!). lost the grill on my car a few times. nothing a few yards of wire can't fix though. all make for an amusing roadtrip. including the view of the reade-mobile on route 495 (thank you, wilson!). i was a little busy indicating what exit not to get off at, but i did notice. i think the reaction would have been a bit more detectable if more had been revealed...ah, next time. speaking of the pennsylvania party car, i think i've grown quite attached to them. [crunch, ah-lee, jon reade (i need a tissue), jon reade (joey spit on me), jon reade (can i go pee?), and of course...wilson] these four people have got some sort of chemistry that i've never seen in a group of people who met over the internet. i really felt for them after the 12 hour trip and having to make the seven hour trip back starting at midnight. had a hard time saying goodbye to these folks (as some of those in the parking lot may have noticed). hope i didn't damage the car. great to see the other folks from the mid atlantic also. steph, always interesting and accomodating. thanks for the crash pad. i got a fu@kin' parking ticket though. i parked laura's car, but did she get a ticket? what do you think? akira, sorry you didn't make it up north. hope you get settled in the city quickly and nicely. and i hope you get settled in other ways as well. "what does akira want?" laura, yes i'm jealous of your trip to scranton. hope it was fun. hope it was fun for all who went to lilith. wish i could be there to see you all again. alan and amy jo, you guys had one of the more interesting performances. so grateful that you still felt like hosting for us. had a blast. campbell's are braver than i could have imagined. a big thanks to them for having us. selena's and proven's arrangements were also quite amazing and natural. intimate. the couches were simply too comfy. i don't think i've heard a better rendition of "walking to s.f." in my life with those cutie crickets in the background. and the tuttles must be mad, hosting a party for friends of dennis. well they must be mad for befriending dennis in the first place (what were they thinking?!?!?). thanks to them for the closer. the bubble babes and lrt's were great backups for a night to remember. coffee at humpty's was a perfect ending to two weekends of bliss and friends ad nauseum. thanks to all who hosted and their friends and families. i will never forget these trips. i know i mentioned hardly anyone in this post, but i will never forget any of you. you were all fun to hang with on my extensive travels. love you all (to quote of you). The final plans are coming together for this little sojourn that we are planning here in Augusta. I have gotten us a nice little campsite at Clarks Hill Lake. So plan on bringing swimsuis, cause you know you are going in the water. The campgrounds rules are no alcohol for public consumption, so we will have to watch where we do the consumption. I will be bringing a canoe so we can go out onto the lake if we want to. There are some islands nearby tha we can visit. Let me know how many are coming for sure as well. Let me know how many are coming to this great and fun excursion of camping in this great Georgia weather.
