For those of you who were fortunate to attend, where were your EDA shirts? I didn't see a single EDA there asides from myself and my girlfriend. ;) 3:35 Arrival. We enter the gate trying to figure out just where exactly our seats were. The curiosity overcame us and we managed to miss a special TBA performance, Yung Chen Lhamo, and most of Michelle Malone's performance. However what we did see of her left us awestruck. Michelle actually signed autograph's at one of the record store booths. 5:10 Boy, were you guys right about Madeleine Peyroux! She was totally AWESOME. Her lyrics are so Jewelish it's scary but her style is all her own. In a strange sort of way, her songs made me feel like I was in a Motal 8 commercial. :) A lot of the time after seeing Madeleine's performance was spent looking around and absorbing the atmosphere, which resulted in us missing Beth Orton's and Patty Griffin's performance's. :( 6:25 Time for the main stage performances to finally start taking place. Lisa Loeb came out and did her set. She performed a variety of songs from both are album Tails as well as new material from her new album, Firecracker, due out in September. She was really interactive with the crowd which kinda shocked me because I didn't think of Lisa as that type. I've seen her live on TV and she always struck me as the kinda person to go from one song straight into another. (i.e. Austin City Limits) 7:05 Right before Emmylou's performance, I got the big idea to see if we (my girlfriend and me) could get backstage to meet Jewel so we missed almost all of Emmylou's performance. We went to one the security gates and explained to the lady security person that we were EDA's, what that meant, etc. etc. and wondered if there was any way to find out if Jewel would be interested in meeting us. She talking to another guy and radioed someone else and said basically that Jewel will be meeting with a few people after her set and to go to the gate on the other side of the theatre. It would be up to Jewel's management whether or not they were gonna let extras in. Excitement set in. 7:50 JEWEL TAKES THE STAGE! Jewel came out wearing a black button up dressy-type shirt with black short shorts to match. Hubba hubba. (Sorry folks). Here's her set list in the exact order performed: 1) Summertime 2) Near You Always 3) Morning Song 4) Satellite 5) Been Down So Long 6) Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone 7) I Fell For You (?) 8) Don't 9) Fragile Flame 10) Who Will Save Your Soul 11) You Were Meant For Me 12) Foolish Games 13) Angel Standing By I was really disappointed that there was almost totally zero interaction with the crowd, asides from her saying, "Shut up with the yodeling stuff, ok?" She didn't seem like she was having a good time, however her performance was stunning. As soon as her set was over, me and Melanie headed for the other security gate and waited and waited and waited, and entirely missed the Indigo Girl's performance. :( Finally we got aggravated and left for a few minutes - just in time to catch an all cast jam. We came back and the security guy said, "No dice". Sooooooo we were majorly disappointed and left just in time to catch Sarah take the stage. The crowd was totally into her. She was super. We watched her perform about 5 songs and then left early to avoid traffic. I hope everyone else who went had as great experience as I did. /@ Shane Kirk \ \ P.O. It was just that I had been trying to get out CT concert information before tickets sold out and I couldn't seem to get a post to post! I really am sorry- hopefully this one will work without any problems. So to any CT EDAs, Jewel will be at the Oakdale in Wallingford at 7:30pm on September 10 (too bad I'll have already left for school). Like I said I tried to get this message out last Friday, before tix went on sale, but something went wrong. So hopefully there are some tickets left for anyone interested. Also to CT EDAs, I was up at Mystic Seaport yesterday and found a couple of Jewel posters in the little 1960s music shop there ("Imagine", or something like that)- both are standard 2' X 3': one is of Jewel with Jakob Dylan on the cover of Details Magazine and the other is Jewel's Rolling Stone cover (with something else- at the bottom, the words "Jewel pieces of you 4 million albums sold" are in black over a gold background). I didn't have enough cash to buy a bunch to sell but if you want one and can't get there, just call there and I'm sure they'd work something out over the phone. Good luck with the tix and posters! Him calling Jewel the "lightest of the lilith fair heavyweights" is very uncalled for and that pisses me off very much. Just because Jewel is not known for her political(like Tracy Chapman) or emotional distressing songs(like Sarah McLachlan) does not mean she's doesn't have other qualities that are just as special and worthy. I think the thing that distinguishes Jewel is that she has all of the above qualities and more. Jewel has so much potential that we have yet to see. I am sure that critic has next to nothing idea about Jewel, her music, and least of all her songs. Since he gave her vinyl a C+ I think he deserves a D- for his terrible review. A year and a half after the LP's release, propelled by relentless touring and videos that highlighted Jewel's grabbiest songs and her ingenue looks, the buzz began. "pieces of You" has since become one of those talked-out, must-own albums, taking up residence in the Billboard top 10 and landing Jewel on the cover of Time. To cement the album's status (and eke out a few more dollars), on July 29 Atlantic Records issued a limited-edition version of "Pieces of You" on two vinyl LPs, with five previously unreleased tracks as added enticement. Clearly a revisit was in order. Jewel's good fortune can be attributed to many things -- timing, glamour, showmanship, and, above all, star power. Charisma isn't a given for folkies, but Jewel has it. On stage, constantly pressing her blond hair behind her ears, she's a strumming contradiction, confident yet ditsy. The one factor that shouldn't have worked in her favor is her own album. "Pieces of You" remains a wimpily produced batch of songs -- so ineffectual that both "Who Will Save Your Soul?" and "You Were Meant for Me" had to be rerecorded for release as singles. It's best considered as a guided tour through three decades of female folk-pop styles. "Near You Always" is "Blue"-era Joni Mitchell; "Foolish Games," pure Kate Bush; "I'm Sensitive," Vega with a lobotomy. That wouldn't be so bad if the women who populate her songs weren't such simps. Men leave them, treat them indifferently, or, in "Painters," die on them -- and the female narrators simply absorb the blows like the wounded birds they are. When Jewel ventures into social commentary, it's embarrassing. "Adrian" is a movie-of-the-week about a coma boy; "Pieces of You," her take on society's superficial values, becomes unintentionally hilarious when she coos, "Oh, Jew, oh, Jew." (Let's not mention the liner-note poems, which read like high school lit-magazine entries.) To be concluded ... ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Aug 1997 21:32:51 -0400 From: Carl Jamison Subject: Scranton Lilith Fair Hello everyone, Sorry to bother everyone but i have 2 lawn seats for the concert in scranton. EW first asks a simple yet cryptic question on its cover, "Can 5 million fans be wrong?" Then proceeds to downplay Jewel's songwriting and singing talents by calling her "lightweight" and her conventional lyrics. They even made fun of her yodeling. Now, I know that as EDAs we cannot jump the guns whenever someone calls Jewel a bad name or put her in an unfavorable light, but I do think this recent EW article deserves some form of response. It seems kind of ironic that they would feel compel to "expose" Jewel as nothing more than an immature artist who sings about felling for "surfer dudes" but yet EW recently put the Hanson boys on their cover. I think Jewel is much more genuine and gifted than those kids from Oklahoma, don't you think? Anyway, I can already see a trend coming, from SPIN to EW and god knows how many more mags will follow suit with their "Jewel-bashing."
