Looking forward to the 2.5 hour drive from Dayton to Deer Creek was nothing...we were going to Lilith! After much gridlock and stopping to check a map a few times we finally got there as Lisa Loeb was going on. But we stayed at the car to eat dinner and listen to Sometimes It Be That Way and Flower one last time. :) After we got inside we caught the last part of Lisa Loeb's set and I was pretty impressed, I had never really heard much more than Stay from her. And then went to buy shirts and look around the Community. We bought my dad a Mary Black CD (she is great) and actually got it signed later while she was milling around in the crowd in section F catching the Indigo Girls. Emmylou Harris was great. In one of the funniest happenings of the night (I thought it was funny at least :) ) her drummer lost his hat. It was on one of the last few songs and he was just so into what her was doing the thing flied right off into his drums! And now waiting for Jewel...she started singing (I am not sure what song--sorry) behind the curtain and came out in this slinky red dress. I felt like I was at a smoky little blues bar and she should be up on a piano! :) She looked great and sounded great. She didn't really interact with the audience as much as I have heard her on live tapes but she seemed kinda tired (someone mentioned this in an earlier post too). She did a *GREAT* Foolish Games and Angel Standing By along with some other stuff (YWMFM, Near You Always, Morning Song, WWSYS) from PoY. And she did Little Sister which I found cool since I was there with MY little sister...but anyway I digress. She introed Angel Standing BY as her last song but then decided to do a little yodel for us. :) As soon as she started Chime Bells I turned to my sister and said (pretty loudly) "She's gonna yodel" ( I was getting sad that she had not played Sometimes It Be That Way--but this I guess made up for that :) ) and this girl next to us gave me a look I cannot even describe (whatever you kook--pretty much says it all :) ) When Jewel actually got to the yodeling part the girl turned to her friend as they both left in the middle of Chime Bells. Some people just don't know pure talent when they see/hear it! :) Indigo Girls ROCKED! They were great. They brought everyone (Emmylou, Jewel, Lisa, Sarah) out for Closer To Fine. Someone posted earlier (I believe at Nashville) that no one knew their lyrics, especially Jewel. :) Well, this time they all had songsheet they were holding. :) Sarah was phenomenal. She did this rocked out version of Solitude...best I have ever heard that song. She did Ice Cream as an encore and then brought everyone, second stage acts included, out for Doctor (IG). They all had song sheet this time too. Jewel did wonderfully on her verse, of course. :) But the funniest thing was her in her slinky red dress, black leather jacket and the white ten gallon hat perched a-top her head! It was Emmylou's drummer's hat that fell off during her set. All in all a wonderful evening. julie s026jmg@discover.wright.edu If you really put a small value upon yourself, rest assured that the world will not raise your price. --Anonymous ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 9 Aug 1997 22:56:09 -0400 (EDT) From: Strwberi13@aol.com Subject: Scranton Lilith Fair 8/13 Quick question..... Andy "the angel in chains" - -- "If you're going to do something tonight that you'll be sorry for tomorrow morning, sleep late." - Henry Youngman ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 09 Aug 1997 23:36:37 -0400 From: Carter Navarro Subject: The EW Review: Part II Part II Like many an introverted balladeer before her, Jewel gleams brightest when she chronicles unrequited love. "Near You Always" finds her trying to keep her distance from the object of her affection so she won't fall back in love, and anyone who's been in souch a situation can relate to that sort of pain. "Everything Breaks," the best of the five bonus tracks, continues the vibe, with a stronger delivery. And "You Were Meant for Me" chronicles a suddenly single life (making breakfast for one, for instance) with deft strokes lacking in her other numbers. "Pieces of You," then, remains a very mixed bag -- yet the factors that make much of it so cringe inducing also lie at the heart of Jewel's popularity. The Time cover acknowledged not only Jewel's success but the breakout success of the all-women Lilith Fair tour, on which she's making periodic appearances. Jewel wasn't at the Lilith show I caught, yet even without her presence, it was clear she's among the most lightweight of the pack. She lacks the political passion of Tracy Chapman, the neurotic-prodigy angst of Fiona Apple, and the thirtysomething wariness of Sarah McLachlan (not to mention the hardened sass of Sheryl Crow). Instead, Jewel revels in traits Lilith seems to downplay -- girlishness, vulnerability, and sex. "Rocker Girl" and "Cold Song," two other extra tracks on the "Pieces of You" LP, are toss-off novelties about cuddling with cute guys. Another new song, "V-12 Cadillac" which will see its debut on the forthcoming "MOM II: Music for Our Mother Ocean" benefit album, is a throwaway white blues about flirting with surfer dudes. At a time when women pop stars are springing ahead into new turf both musically and lyrically, Jewel knows that every generation still needs its symbol of delicate flowerhood, wandering wide-eyed through life. Let's just hope she's growing wiser as well as older -- and that she continues to leave yodeling off her records. "Pieces of You" expanded edition: C+ - ----- Anyone remember one of the great scenes from "A Christmas Story?" "C+! Hahahahahaa! You'll shoot your eye out!" I can certainly imagine Mr. Browne being a prime target for Jewel's "cynicism is safer, not smarter" critique, but he IS a critic after all. MY primary complaint: as agenda-carrying critics are prone to do, the man conveniently ignores what I believe is Jewel's single greatest asset: her voice. No, Jewel's music is not lyrically or musically groundbreaking, but her voice can transform "throwaway" songs into memorable sonic experiences. Damn the yodeling; when I first heard Jewel carry the final notes of "WWSYS" beyond the 20-second barrier with undiminished force I was stunned. "Ineffectual" was not one of the many words in my head at the time. I like her, so sue me. I listen to Joni Mitchell, too. Pictures: there's a head-cocked variation of the popular blue-on-blue photograph on the cover, an old US photograph preceding the review (the one I originally referred to as having the "what the hell am I doing?" quality to it), and a "Dali does Rainbow Brite" artist's representation on the contents page. I also listen to the Prodigy. If you wanna get critical of lyrics, take on "Change my pitch up, smack my bitch up." Goes nicely with "I'm sensitive and I'd like to stay that way," don't ya think? =) Carter "Punkin' Instiga-tuh!"
