Part II will deal with Liz and Shelly's LRT stop... Thanks to the efforts of West coast EDAs and artist management (Hi, Bart and Karen), Cindy Lee Berryhill and Elizabeth Hummel scheduled my house as the fifth stop on their legendary Living Room Tour. I spent most of the previous month pleading, cajoling and bribing friends from across the country to attend, knowing that it would be entertaining and worthwhile. To those of you who accepted this on faith, a million thanks, and I hope you were rewarded by the actual event. :-) After some slight miscommunication, we finally tracked down the ladies as they were readying to leave the Fisher household in Cincinnati, and were informed that they were running a bit behind due to lack of sleep and a scheduled radio interview that morning. I spent the added time tidying up and preparing for the (hopefully) onslaught of attendees in the early evening. First to arrive was Michael Garnett from Peoria, whose first EDA experience was the inestimable LizStock. After our humorous confusion about time zones leading to that event, Mike was clearly not about to take any chances with being late! We chatted for a while as my wife and I were dusting and setting up some of the food, and soon there was another knock at the door. It was Chris Lewis, bearing a ton of gifts from Chicago. This incredible guy brought us three HUGE deep-dish Chicago pizzas, fresh from the oven at a real Chicago pizzeria. We set about baking them to completion in our decrepit and extremely fragile oven (whose handle fell off with typical regularity, as it does for us). Toni came downstairs about this time, and Chris presented her with two pairs of awesome-looking Chuck Taylors, which she immediately donned to show off. This guy is amazing; even after all the stuff he brought, he wouldn't let me waive his ticket fee. I'm telling you, EDA Hall of Fame. People started arriving in bigger clumps about then; Liz, Shelly and Tim rolled in from Toledo (YAY!), Hunter brought his wonderful mother from Muncie, and Jessica from Fishers (and the Tara MacLean mailing list) also showed up for her inaugural EDA gathering. Many local folks filtered in, including some of my co-workers, and Toni's entire band ultimately made it to the show. It was beginning to look like a great turnout -- but were were the artists? I was helping Chris deal with the detachable oven door handle and the manipulation of massive pizza things when the door swung open and there was a mild commotion in the hall. Sure enough, Cindy and Elizabeth were here. "You must be Cindy", I said, as I greeted the first arrival. "And you're Greg -- I recognize you from the pictures." Hey, wait; that was supposed to be MY line. :-) The ladies came in and almost immediately blended in to the crowd; most interesting, and different from the usual business-first approach of most performers. In fact, they hung out for a while before deciding to bring their instruments in, and found plenty of willing roadies to help them bring stuff in from the rental car. My wife the science fiction author was pleased to discover that Cindy knows a number of our writer and artist friends from the San Diego area, and that she's a long time SF fan and astronomy enthusiast. I regret that we didn't have time to pull out my telescope and show her some of the celestial beauties on this very clear and cool evening. Mike Menke (Chuck Marten's producer :-) brought some hardware to help us record the concert, and we spent a half hour making sure we had the performance and recording environment set up properly. Then we rolled tape, and the August 5 Living Room Concert was under way! The performance was very loosely organized; Elizabeth and Cindy did a duet or two, then Elizabeth played solo, then Cindy played solo, then they did another duet... I love impromptu set lists. There was a break at the half-way point, a tape change after two hours of steady music, and a great finale. Both played a number of tunes from their CDs as well as some wonderful new original tunes. Standouts include a co-written composition "Evangeline", Elizabeth's "Get Naked" performed on rockin' dulcimer, Cindy's awesome "Skip Song" based on a skipping Beach Boys record, the beautifully harmonized "Sour Grapes" and "Goodwill Store", Cindy's solo rendition of the "UFO Suite", Elizabeth's "Sky Heart", and Cindy's double whammy consisting of the song about her mother (performed on the toy piano) and the ballad "Pompeii" (composed when she was 10 years old!) I will never again be able to hear the proper name "Herculaneum" without bursting into giggles. Cindy also read from a book she has written, which was quite entertaining (shades of JewelStock!). I was totally unprepared for the intensity and honesty contained in their 2-1/2 hour performance; once again, there is no substitute for live music. One of the wonderful things about this concert is that everyone loved it -- and everyone liked something completely different about the set, the performers, the instrumentation, and the writing. The ladies hung out for a while, autographing CDs and stuff, then decided that they would be better off hitting the road and seeking out a comfy motel than crashing on my floor. :-) So after we made sure that they were safe to drive off, many able hands packed up their equipment and helped them load. Hugs were distributed to all, and our artists, guests and friends sped off into the night. Astonishingly, it was only midnight. It was a great evening; I'm sure I've failed to report a number of details, but Liz, Tim, and Hunter's posts fill in some of the atmosphere very nicely. I'll continue with part II after a break and some more iced tea... - -- | Greg Dunn | "And I don't think it's my | | gregdunn@indy.net | fault... you never get what | | GregDunn@aol.com | you want." | | http://members.aol.com/gregdunn/ | Patty Griffin | ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 9 Aug 1997 01:27:32 -0400 (EDT) From: JewelEDA21@aol.com Subject: EDA covertapes Hej! I don't know why I decided to go to Liz's LRT stop, in Toledo, on a weeknight. Oh, yeah, I remember -- it was because I had to go to hers in exchange for her coming to mine. :-) And of course, because after a wonderful Tuesday night show, I couldn't miss this one. Well, anyway, Michael Garnett (who may be nuttier than I am) drove here from Peoria so I could give him a ride to Toledo last night. Sadly, Chris Lewis was unable to make it and Michael had to hitch a ride with the Naked Guy. :-) We departed from my house only a few minutes later than I had planned, and made great time on our trek to Toledo. Michael kept me awake by pretending to listen to my long-winded dissertations on how many famous artists I had met in my advanced age... Soon we were in Ohio, and to my delight arrived at Liz's only a few minutes after 6, local time. We even beat Dan Stark by half an hour, so he must not have left Canada till about 6:30. I wandered into the kitchen, to see who had arrived. Duff! I got a hug from one of my favorite angels, who I hadn't seen since Liz's birthday. Mia was there, too; always friendly, and rapier sharp wit. I met the guys from Germany, which was a treat; and was introduced to Progman; always nice to meet someone after you've chatted on IRC for so long. Apparently Cindy and Elizabeth were napping in the spare bedroom, so we all watched Tim's excellent Rugburns video and Liz's Ani Difranco tape while we waited for showtime. I snacked on cheese dip and terrific brownies, catching up on Duff's cross-country tour while I ate. Dan finally showed up :-) and several of Liz's friends invaded the living room, almost doubling the attendance in a few minutes. Liz was quite festive, wearing a long flowery dress that made her look even taller than Shelly -- at a distance. The artists took the hint and wore long dresses as well, in spite of the warmth in Liz's house. Dan and I set up the tape machines and microphones while Tim helped us find cable adapters and positioned his camera for the best view. At last all was ready, and I snapped a few pictures while Cindy and Elizabeth were tuning their guitars. Roll 'em! Thursday's set was similar to Tuesday's, but the occasional switcheroo made it equally fresh and interesting. Cindy played "Baby, Should I Have The Baby" and "High Jump" on my request, both with commentary on the origin and history of the songs. The harmony-filled "Aquamarine" and "Sour Grapes" were definite crowd pleasers, and Cindy's "Skip Song" brought delighted applause and cheers. We also got to hear another fine performance of "Eloise", and Cindy's "Antarctica", dedicated to her sister. Cindy recruited Tim Burke to do falsetto vocals on "I Wonder Why", and he blew us all away with a really fine effort. "I just melt for a guy who can sing falsetto", she confided to us. You go, Tim! All I got was the opportunity to do monkey sound effects on Elizabeth's "appalachian rap song", which was appropriate for yours truly the Slut Monkey, I guess. I enjoyed watching Cindy perform a professional massage on road-weary Duff during the short break; Cindy then went off to corner another of Liz's excellent brownies... Liz's cats made brief cameo appearances during the latter part of the set, and there were moments of laughter as golfers looking for lost balls in Liz's back yard grumbled loudly enough to be heard in the house. The show lasted about 10 minutes longer than Tuesday's, with a couple of nice collaborative efforts wrapping up the set. The ladies got a fine round of applause, and we adjourned to the front room to buy them out of T-shirts and CDs. :-) All too soon, the ladies had signed all their merchandise, and it was time for them to head on to the Cape Cod show. Mia departed somewhat early, so I thanked her for the work she did on the Tara MacLean list's gift (but that's another post!) and bid her farewell. Once again, Cindy and Elizabeth lined up to hug all the attendees, and then they were off to another show. Knowing that everyone on the house was getting up bright and early today to follow them, Michael and I decided to forgo a short nap followed by an early morning drive, and head straight back to my place where we could get a full night's sleep. So we said some almost-tearful goodbyes to Liz, Shelly, and Duff (I love you guys!) and wished the best to Tim, Dan, and our European EDA friends. Then it was time to hit the road again. I was more tired than I thought, but made good time and never succumbed to drowsiness. We got home a bit after 3 AM local, and crashed hard. Other than forgetting my "Contact" shirt, I don't think I made any mistakes on the way home. Unless you count turning the wrong way on I-69 after carefully reading the exit sign twice... D'oh! Well, I'm off to sunny Texas -- thanks to a temporary job reassignment, I'll be checking out the music scene in Austin for a little while. I congratulate the folks who have supported the LRT so far, and wish the best of luck to the remaining tour stop hosts. Hopefully I can participate again the next time such a golden opportunity comes along. Thanks to all who made my concert a success, much love to Liz and Shelly for letting us be a part of theirs, and big hugs to Cindy Lee and Elizabeth for trusting us with their livelihood on this special tour. She speaks from her heart, and that i appreciate and respect a great deal. Her various experiences throughout her 23 years on this earth have opened her eyes to things many people would not observe. She has seen the world through so many points of view, that it is hard to believe she is so young. She is a beautiful writer who doesnt stray from the honest truth. She says what she wants to say, and in a beautiful way at that. She is a wonderful guitar player, and even though her riffs and chords may not be the most complicated, the music that she plays is purely divine. She has the voice of an angel, and she uses it so well, changing her voice with every deeply felt emotion. When she puts all three of these things together, you get one of the most brilliant artists in music today. Of course these three characteristics are not the only things needed to be a wonderful musician. She has a wonderful attitude and appreciates all the attention and credit she recieves, and she recieves it with a sense of class and dignity. Unfortunately, the entertainment industry is notorious for overworking and overpopularizing artists who cant stand the heat. Many entertainers crack under all the pressure and end up being "has-beens." The industry picks them up and uses them for all there worth, only to throw them off at the next stop. I dont think Jewel will ever come in to this situation. As a matter of fact, i dont think she will even come close. I dont think she is capable of doing so, of losing herself that is, thank God She is a strong soul that could never be beat down by anyone. It also doesnt hurt that she is as beautiful outside as she is in. I know an artist does not need to look like a goddess to be respected, as a matter of fact, sometimes they are taken less seriously because they are beautiful. For example, the whole deal with Jakob Dylan, Gavin Rossdale and so many others. The infamous arguement of "Their fans only like them cause they are beautiful," which i find ridiculous, because i dont really think people would listen to crappy music just because the singer happens to be phisically gifted. She has a look that complements her voice, she sounds like an angel and looks extremely angelic. I never met Jewel personally, and i AM writing this post based on the way i see her through the eyes of the media. BUT i cannot fathom the idea that my view of her would change for the worse if i did meet her. She would have to do something extremely horrible and be TOTALLY, and i mean the COMPLETE opposite, of what i perceive her to be. I seriously doubt that could EVER happen! I am still waiting for my opportunity to have a conversation with her, which may only be wishful thinking. But i can still hope! :o) She is a very intriguing human being that i feel has a lot to say, and believe me she will, because she will be around for quite sometime. When people in the entertainment industry say that a person has "IT," that undescribeable quality that makes a person, i hate using this word but, a "star", i usually find that that means that particular person has staying power, that they will be around for a while. In THAT way, i do find Jewel as some sort of "star" after all she does have a star in the sky named after her! I have listened to Jewel for about 3 yrs now, and i am proud to say im a fan for life. OK so there u have it, my opinion of Jewel. I dont know if it will help u in any way, but i had to get it off my chest! Jewel said she was there because she wanted to support the Gucci Show because they were raising money for Aids. Jewel was wearing a black 80's shirt and a really nice Black Peacoat. =) Gucci put on a fasion show and all proceeds would go towards Aids. they raised over a million dollars for Aids research and awareness. I have liked Gucci clothes for a long time, but never had enough money to get anything but always liked it. =) Id really like to thank the people at Gucci and anyone who is helping with the Aids cause. I know many poeple have different opinions about AIDS but i think the people who have contributed their time and convictions should be commended! Since i have worked with Aids awareness before it takes alot of hope to help out something that seems like a losing cause. Most of us have been affected or will be affected by aids. Jewel started her set singing from behind the curtain off the side of the stage and strolled out onto the stage, with mic in hand, in an awesome red dress. She was absolutely stunning. I had the good fortune of sitting right in front of the stage so obviously I had a great view. Of course, her set was equally as awesome. She did a very intense Foolish Games (my favorite of the night). Some people flung a few roses on stage, but none hit her head...they just landed at her feet and she ignored them. The Indigo Girls pretty much rocked the place and Sarah McLachlan was simply beautiful. In what apparently was a Lilith first, the show ended with Sarah inviting all the other performers on stage to sing a Joni Mitchell song. Jewel came out with a leather jacket over the red dress and wearing a white cowboy hat...cute. Jewel also participated in the last Indigo Girls song. SETLIST (order is probably a little off) unknown song Near You Always Little Sister Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone Last Dance Rodeo (I think) WWSYS Foolish Games Just Passing Time YWMFM Morning Song Angel Standing By Chime Bells I think there was one other song that I don't know the name of. The Indianapolis Star had a review of the evening giving everyone high marks, except they left out Jewel in the review. Don't forget, there's a Lilith Fair video/audio webcast tonight in Chicago at www.jamtv.com (5:30pm central time). - -Tom ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 9 Aug 1997 12:54:50 -0700 (PDT) From: Raymond Wong Subject: SJC: tape trees, longer tapes... I hope this isn't misunderstood, Angels, but I've noticed a small trend in blank tapes I've been sent, and was hoping others had some ideas... While I can understand the ambiguity of what tape length should be used when trading miscellaneous concerts, I've noticed for the edited tapes (trees such as Jewelstock or the Paradise/Christmas tapes, as well as old "classics" like Innerchange Days), that some people send me longer length tapes (100 or 110min), requesting additional live/rare material... Since Alan and others have given so much care in assembling these tapes, they usually run pretty close to the end... What am I supposed to put on the extra 5 minutes? Most of her shows include a fair amount of banter with the audience and such, making it seem rather awkward to just chop out a few minutes, to me. I just don't feel something like that does justice to Jewel's material. I suppose the answer is that I'm supposed to include non-album tracks from promo CDs or something, but I don't exactly have most of those, either... I don't like to just send the tapes back with the extra blank space, but there's not much else I can think to include, short of suprising them with other artists, of whom I also don't have a lot. (There's still a matter of source... I usually already have things packed out for 90 minute tapes, so filler ends up on sides shorter than 45mins...) So, can I ask what other people who dub a lot do? I don't mind copying what I have for people (though I do wish I'd occasionally find someone who actually had material I didn't or something I could get a copy of), but trying to find 5 minutes here and there from other tapes I have is really time consuming, and I've been busy enough at work that taking the time to try and contact people, straightening it out on a case-by- case basis is tending me more towards backlogs, which isn't fair to the other people who just send me tapes of a convenient length... I've tried trying to arrange the "queue" based on how much individual attention the copying requires, but it's turning into a logistical nightmare! Help! There's got to be a faster way! I just got my new Entertainment Weekly (August 15) and there's an article about the re-release of PoY. I haven't read it yet, but it don't look good. The article is called "Going to 'Pieces' Again" and they give the new vinyl a C+. (Those dirty...) The little sub-title thingy says, "Now that 1995's Pieces of You is being reissued as a two-LP set, we thought it was time to reappraise Jewel. The vinyl exam shows she still has a lot to learn" (Those dirty...) Just a P.S.- There's a small picture of her on the front and the picture from the July '96 US w/ the article plus a picture of the LP. ( the opening show at The Gorge Ampitheatre ) Well I didnt even bother to read the whole thing.. I got really upset when the writter ( Evelyn McDonnell ) wrote , and I quote: "women are from Sarah McLachlan, men are from Perry Farrell. Lilith's artists, like their earth mother, tend to be spiritual, nurturing, in touch with their emothions, inwardly directed, and passive. Lollapolooza's are political, aggressive, tough, externally oriented, and active. Liliths's women use simple acoustic instruments while the boys of Lollapaloza play with all kinds of gadgetry. Lilith: kitchen; Lollapalooza: garage." After reading this I didn't want to continue with the article.....It just pissed me off. This lady is basically saying that women artists are sensitve...and male tough. Thats a load of crap ( sorry ) When she says women artists are in touch with their emotions she is right, but she doesnt even acknowledge the fact that so are men...I mean why do people write songs....well duh its to express a certain emotion. Everyone who writes a song is trying to confront and issue that makes them emotional..I mean why else would they write. Another thing, She says that males are aggressive and tough...Well so are the females. You dont have to shout to be aggreassive ane tough. And the songs women write are just as political as the ones that men write, i.e., Jewels songs "DADDY" and "POY" I think that those two songs just may as well be the most aggressive and political songs that I have heard. The women and men are confronting the same things its just from different angles. I'm really sorry to have taken up so much space, but I really felt that I needed to get this out. After I got to that point I just cut the pic of Jewel out and threw that mag in the recycle bin.....obviously this woman doesnt know enought about music to actually write something meaningful about it....thats just my take on it....thanks for anyone that listened to this little 15 year old...i appreciate it!!
