Subject: this copy of YWMFM that I have I'm posting this to see if anyone can help me with something. I just went through a mix tape of songs from the radio and found a version of You Were Meant For Me that isn't the album version. First of all, half the second verse isn't sung. The first two lines of the chorus are left out (every time it's sung). The tempo is faster than the album version; and The guitar sounds different (it sounds like an electric). I think (my hearing isn't good enough for me to be sure) that it's in a different key (not real far from the album version, though). I'm thinking this might be the radio version (since it was taped from the radio), but I'm not sure, so (finally, the point of my post :), can anyone tell me more about this version I have here? Hi guys and gals, I'm crawlin' my way to the computer..I've been sick since the Fair, but I was feeling wonderful the day of the concerts..must've caught a bug flying around there! Anyway, this was the first time I had seen Jewel live..and what luck I had. 4th row! yes, you read that correctly..You have to understand, I never get luck like this! I was so excited to just get to the venue and check out these seats! When I got there, it just wouldn't sink in - me? This lucky? You see, I'm notorious for my bad Jewel luck..I was *Jewelstuck* for Jewelstock, I LIVE in the town where Rockfest was held, was there as part of the committee, but got sick and had to go home...I thought it wasn't meant for me to actually see this inspiration of mine. I felt like these fourth row seats were answers to prayers and a lot of wishing..See, Jewel is right. *Dreams DO come true*. (I had to get spiritual.:) ) I got there a little after the gates opened and slugged around like the others in the almost unbearable heat. I walked around and looked at the booths and signed up for some volunteer services all while handling a giant Coke in my right hand..(i didn't drink my water..shame on me) I caught some of the second stage acts and was very impressed..then I caught Lisa Loeb. I've never really been caught by her music before, but she was so personable, making comments about the weather and Dallas that probably only natives got..I liked her.. I missed Emmylou Harris because I had to make a food break. I stood by the *backstage door* , one of them anyway, and caught sight of Joan Osborne walking by. She smiled at me..Made me very happy!! Then I looked in front of me and saw two familiar guys..i nearly cracked my skull trying to figure out who they were and it dawned on me: Ashe, Sarah McLachlan's drummer/husband, and her bassist. I looked Ashe directly in the eye, smiled and nodded, and he did the same..This weird sort of silent acknowledgment happened. Isn't that too lucky??! yes, I do believe I was flying at this point! I got to my seat in time for Joan, who I'd seen about a year ago at a free concert downtown..I was about the same distance from her as I was then, and she rocked the crowd like before! She is definitely livelier onstage than on albums..she loves the stage, you can tell. She got us all on our feet after a mishap with the security guards..the thugs, really. Two girls in front of me were dancing, that's it. they weren't in the way, they were just enjoying the infectious music. One of those thugs grabbed one by the arm and yanked her to make her sit down. Joan stopped her band and said, " Don't mess with them. I told them to dance. They're just having fun." And as the guards proceeded to take them away for DANCING, she said," I'm talking to you. Guards, don't take them away. I want them to dance. " They wouldn't listen.(brutes) "If they can't be out here, you give them backstage passes." The crowd roared! I admit, the thought of jealousy entered my mind, but I thought, heck, they deserve it..And many brownie points for Joan, on her last night, for standing up to those thugs and putting them in their place. After that, everyone around me, yes including me, danced to her version of "Brick House"! that really set the mood for me - have innocent fun. That's what it's about, and when did it become a crime? Jewel was next. I sat nervously in my chair watching the roadies and techs setting up the equipment..I saw her brown acoustic being set up in its stand and it hit me..Dear God in heaven, you have brought me to this spot where I can see her "within spitting distance" as my boyfriend jokingly compared it! :) I had paper, a pen, and my camera..yes, I'm a bad girl and snuck my camera in there, but I'm not sure how the pix will come out..I don't have a zoom like FARR!! {{poke, poke!}} Then it went dark.. Continued in part 2 ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 08 Aug 1997 03:19:52 -0500 From: earthsis@spindle.net (earthsis@spindle.net) Subject: My Lillith fair Experience 2 - Dallas (long!) Part 2 The lights went dim and the screams came from every direction..And then I saw her come out at the right..actually a sillouhette (oh gawd, that's awful spelling, but i'm too tired to correct it) ;) I saw a flowing image, kinda floating across the stage. I swear, it looked like she was a phantom of delight.. (Anyone know that poem by William Wordsworth? that's what I thought of.) She picked up her guitar and softly began Near You Always..They had a white spotlight from the front and one from the back..I am not trying to make a pun here..she looked like an angel. And I know some of you know what I mean when she's wearing flowing clothes like that, she's singing and the lighting catches her almost like sunrays.. ***Here's the setlist:*** Near You always Deep Water Morning Song Satellite Been Down So Long (what is her new title for this? I only know the old one) Love me just leave me alone Down (?) "I will take you down" Don't Stranger Foolish games YWMFM Angel Standing By ********* She didn't speak very much between songs. I was impressed of course, but it almost felt like she was just playing the songs to finish them..And I didn't feel a connecting vibe..she hardly looked up at the audience. But she really put some anger into Foolish games..it wasn't sad like the album version. I will admit that I cried during "Deep Water". I thought of you guys, this list, the EDA's..I remembered how she had told us she wrote it for us, and that line "there's nothing without love" really got to me..I know it was only her second song, but I weeped. I thought of this family and how much she has inspired me, and how much you guys have helped me, emotionally and physically..(I'm sick a lot, but you guys help me through it) Go listen to Deep Water. And if you don't have it, email me and I'll help you get that Angelfood. :) She sang the entire YWMFM in her "girlish" voice. "Don't" was a crowd pleaser..very emotional. She said that "Angel Standing By" would be her last song and she wanted everybody to be really quiet because it was a lullaby. She explained that she wrote it for herself when she couldn't get to sleep in her van and because she believes in angels. She also told us to never think that we're alone because we aren't. And as simple as that may sound, at the time, it's what I needed to hear. It really touched me and brought tears to my eyes. ASB was extraordinary..her voice soared across the night sky..It still does when I close my eyes. She didn't come back for an encore..I don't feel that we were a bad crowd... Something tells me she wasn't feeling right, or she was just tired..hey, that happens to the best of us! ;) And no one yelled , "YODEL"! This crowd was very polite and respectful toward her and somewhere in my heart , I found appreciation for those I was sitting amongst, those that found the sparkle in her that you and I have found. Sarah put on a remarkable show - there was no doubt in my mind that she was having a good time..she was all smiles! I was sad to see it end..We walked to the car and it didn't dawn on me yet that it was over. It hit me when I was home awaiting sleep. The best concert I've ever been to, despite the hassling I got from the security guards.. I hope Jewel will come back to this area - in a smaller environment. I want to see her like those that saw her on the Tiny Lights Tour did. Think it's possible? Thank you for reading this. I really needed to share this and I knew you guys would *get* it.. I was wondering, this seems to almost hint at some sort of involvement with a group such as the KKK....Am I reading into this too much? Lemme know! Thanks. I would really love to met you all and it seems that every time we try to met it always falls through. Thanks! Also to those of you that have already been to the previous Lilith Fairs is it possiable to me Jewel before of after the concert or do you have to have back stage passes? When I saw her in concert at the Chicago Theatre those of us who stuck around long enough after the show got to me her, but that was a much smaller venue. I would love to met her again. If you need backstage passes how do you get them? Is the only way by winning them on the radio or knowing the right people? Please help me with these questions. Thanks! Does it star with a timpony-like drum, and electric guitar. Does every second verse start "with I know you love me, and soon you will see." At the end does it go "you were ment for me and I was ment for (a long, yodaling) you." If so this version is called YWMFM (UNRELEASED RADOI VERSION) I think I saw a video version of this, using an edited first version video of YWMFM. It is 3:13 only available on a CD that I have called NOW!2. NOW!2 is a WEA release. As I am looking at the copywrite info, it looks like it is made in Canada. I don't know where you can get this CD, because I got it in a store in Toronto, when I was competing at a Band comitition. (We won by the way) I will try to put some clips of it on my web site http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/1030/frmusic.htm Here is the info on the CD: WTVD 35296 This compilation P & C 1997 Warner International Manufacturing Inc., under a joint venture with Universal Music and EMI Music Canada. Its was written based on an incident when Jewel was younger, she went over to a friend's house and their father wouldn't let them watch tv shows that had black people in them. Just a note for everyone, note very, very specifically that its not Jewel's father Atz, its someone else's father. (Sometimes people make that mistake...) I think that, like many of her songs, it is meant to stir up emotions, and youre not necessarily supposed to read into her songs that deeply.
