Alan leaving, especially for such reasons as he did, indicate some problems we have within us. Alan is sensitive, and too many list members weren't careful with him. Places in Boston at least have a fondness for using slang or really bad puns in their names. The older the store, the older the slang. Really? People don't understand what "what we call human nature in actuality is human habit." means? Hmm. I have it on my web page and no one's ever asked. But maybe that's because it's a Jewel page! Anyway, here's my best effort at putting the idea into explicit words. But maybe someone else reading the quote would think in means something different. * * * * * "What we call human nature in actuality is human habit." ~ Jewel Kilcher Have you ever done something bad? I mean something like selfishness, lying because it was easier than the truth, meanness out of frustration, making excuses to avoid dealing with a problem, or a whole bunch of other possibilities. I have. And chances are you have too. It almost seems inevitable. In fact, sometimes people say about our actions, "Oh, that's just human nature." But is it? When we say this we're, kind of, saying more that just what is. We're saying it's part of who we intrinsically are: selfish, liars, or mean to one another. And when we say it's so fundamental to our nature we're tacitly excusing it as unalterable. So to expect ourselves to be more, is like expecting a flower to grow without water. It can't; that's just the way it is. Is it "just the way it is" with us? I don't think so. We can try to be better people and, though it can be really tough, grow into something more. Maybe it's just at first it's so much easier to be less than our potential. Afterall; if you don't lie, make excuses, be selfish or mean; life can become pretty unbearable on the playground. And so it becomes a habit. These things we do to deal with the world become so natural to us because we do them so often. But just because it comes naturally doesn't make it human nature. We can be different. We can break bad habits. And when someone makes an excuse like "Oh, that's just human nature." they're really just continuing the habit of finding the easier way not to be our greatest potential. The next time someone perpetuates this habit maybe we should remind ourselves: What we call human nature in actuality is human habit. Kevin Grobman * * * * * Well, that's my best effort at expressing the idea. I think Jewel does a wonderful job at expressing intricate ideas so succinctly. I'm curious what other people interpret this quote to mean! As a separate matter. I live in Pittsburgh and want to go to the Lilith Fair August 12th but I'd rather not go alone. If you live near Pittsburgh and want company going up there or if you're going with a group and don't mind an extra person, I'd like to join you. It was rather unique, but I was disappointed in my dream.. I was in Grand Rapids, Michigan, at a Venue that was not recognized, but Jewel and a few other artists were performing there...I watched Jewel, and then another person came on and was singing, so I went outside for a smoke...Going outside is the first strange thing, because I don't smoke...ANyhow...Some guys with long hair and dressed in leather biker jackets and stuff were standing outside, and asked one of the venue workers if Steve Poltz was there...And the venue worker said that yes he was...So I said "What???Steve is here??? Like I knew Steve personally or something...anyway....the guy said yes, and asked me if I would like to meet him..So I nodded, and we walked through the foyer and into a hall where I expected to meet Steve..Well...there were some other people there in the hall, and they were giving another venue worker their insurance cards.....And I though this was kinda strange, so I asked, and they said that it would cost to see Steve...anyhow...i didnt have much money on me, so i asked how much, and the venue worker said something like "$218.00, but you can charge it to your insurance"...Anyhow...Being an honest guy, I declined the offer to meet Steve, and left the venue disappointed.... Does anybody know if venues are now accepting insurance as a method of payment...Just Kidding! Check your calendars! That's the Canadian Labor Day weekend starting August 29 1997. The LRT stops here on August 29 and Indian Summerstock takes place here on August 30 and 31. But I could not resist telling at least some of the great times that happened at the August 2nd LRT at our house. Here are just some snippets of things that took place... * Chicken Caesar said sounded like a good thing to have at the time. * No, I don't know why Erica is not here, stop asking me * The ladies were 90 minutes late. It was worth the wait -- * Elizabeth is really really really really cool -- too much so for words * Cindy sleeps a lot and is a self-proclaimed light weight * Cindy played "Season of the Witch" and "Diane" for me :-) * Elizabeth likes candles at her performances * There were only 53 stains on my carpet * How many alcohol runs, did Richard (Akira) take -- 3 or 4? * Cindy absolutely rocks, she couldn't be a sweeter person either * The ladies spent the night -- which meant Dennis was kicked out of the "Harris Hotel" to make room * Umm --- who's on the front lawn? * We got to sing and some played rhythm for Cindy * We had Elizabeth and her Dulcimer "Unplugged" after the show on my back porch * Rach and Tom occupied the "balcony" seating? Hmm, didn't know we had such a thing. * "She won't even try, She won't even try, She won't even try, She won't even try, She won't even try, She won't even try, She won't even try, She won't even try" * "Pompeii, Pompeii, Pompeii, Pompeii, Pompeii, Pompeii" I leave the rest for others!!!!!!!!!!! A brilliant inspiration that had its genesis between Larry the loveable lawyer in L.A. and Chris Snyder and others in Boston. (I apologize if I haven't given credit to all the right people. Thank you all, and stand up and take a bow.) A concept that, through the energy and hard work of many EDAs, the artists and their management, has manifest itself in a wonderful tour that is awakening audiences to Cindy Lee Berryhill and Elizabeth Hummel -- at the same time it's inspiring other musicians and the media. Here's an update from the first Canadian site to be graced with the LRT. Cindy Lee and Elizabeth will be on Salt Spring Island to perform in an intimate island living room setting on Friday, August 29 1997. (That's the Labor Day holiday weekend in Canada.) They'll be staying on to perform as part of Indian Summerstock, a day long music fest here on Saturday, August 30. That same evening they'll catch a boat to sail to Seattle for their Bumbershoot Festival performance on Sunday August 31. There's a lineup building of cool artists who are coming to Salt Spring and will play for EDAs and other festival goers on Saturday after we bid a fond island farewell to Elizabeth and Cindy Lee. Ron Scott, one of Vancouver's most talented and tasteful guitarists has agreed to form a house band and back up any musicians who want accompaniment. He's bringing over a pedal steel guitar and other instruments to add to the musical mix. Jeffrey Hatcher, the lead guitarist with a Byrds-Beatle-esque sounding band, the Sugar Beats, is planning to make it -- he's waiting to talk to his travelling band members this week before we can confirm their appearance at Indian Summerstock. Jeff actually played on a bill in New York City with Cindy Lee some years ago, so here's hoping he can make the date again. Definitely confirmed for Indian Summerstock is the 50s jazz meets 60s garage rock combo, Ralph (). It's been said of Ralph "If you dig Chet Baker, Ray Davies, Cole Porter, Ramsey Lewis, Ella Fitzgerald, The Twist and The Pretty Things, you'll dig this!" Last summer Ralph co-billed with Laura Agnelli (of the Washington Squares) and Dave Rave (of legendary Canadian pop punksters, Teenage Head) on The Beatnik Folk Pop Explosion Tour which played CBGB's and other landmark spots. On vocals and goatee, the band's lead singer, also named Ralph, is a poet whose beat 'zine is carried in San Francisco's City Lights Bookstore. The Allen Ginsburg Foundation maintains a link to Ralph's web-page. Several other musicians will be confirming their appearances at Indian Summerstock in the next few days. For EDAs, it promises to be a very cool weekend. The LRT show will be in my living room. Natch! Indian Summerstock will happen on acres of land owned by the local Farmer's Institute. If the weather's dry we'll hear the music in the orchard. If it rains we'll move into a barn and set up a stage and seats on bales of hay. There's going to be a giant barbecue and a farmer's goods and services auction on the site as well. So, if you want to experience country living and great music among friends, we'll see you here. Please RSVP to Adrian at howenow@imagen.net with your plans (and to get travel directions!) ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #623 ***************************
