Hopefully, I can do my part to influence big radio to play Jewel in this manner. What do you think? Also, for those you who live in my area (Seattle, WA-ish), you can tune in to 89.9 FM (it'll probably be a little, if not a lot, staticy, sorry about that). As a matter of fact, as we do NEED to cut down on the quantity of emails to this list, I am politely telling you all to please stop it. It's no longer serving any good purpose, as we all know it by now. Continuation of this talk is ONLY going against the goal of reducing email *quantity* to the list. I posted Jeff's main concern and am well on the way to rectifying that situation at least temporarily, until I can speak with him on the phone about other things we can and need to do. I have nothing but confidence that this list WILL survive at smoe.org, but we all have to work at it, AND be NICE about it if/when you write a fellow list member when you think they posted somthing that was not appropriate (in your opinion). There seems to be entirely too much private flaming going on. (I've been somewhat mildly guilty of that too) It's really NONE of my biz on what you write each other, but my guideline is, pretend you are replying to a dear friend that you feel has crossed the line, be nice in telling them so :) By the way, MANY of you have suggested GREAT ideas and I thank you!!:) I am planning on brainstorming with a few select folk on this list to put the best of these ideas together to come up with a few possible idea to present to Jeff when he comes back. Also, the emails to me to send to Jeff have been GREAT too!! (some semi-negative ones too, but that was expected and I will send THEM to Jeff too, as all opinions count. FYI, they will be separated into common categories by overall topic/sentiment, so Jeff can easily see these opinions/comments on the various categories as he sees fit) Also, one person today suggested emailing Jeff with any complaints about this list (he mentioned NJC specifically). That is NOT what to do. Jeff doesn't want them (unless of course it's VERY important, for some reason). He's given me control of the list for various reasons including the fact he has *very little* time to deal with this list, as it's the largest by far of the 30 or so he has on smoe.org....not to mention he's out of the country alot now. If you have complaints about Jewel@smoe, please send them to me privately. If any of them merit me asking/consulting Jeff, I *will* do so :) your fellow EDA/list member, Mike :) P.S. (Excellent idea to quote Dep Water!) Bravo as well to Derek and the other so-called newbies who have also contibuted in what must be confusing circumstances. I just want to add my support to everyone who feels as though we're going to make things work better. I think we're in the midst of emerging from a bit of an identity crisis, which culminated in some way, shape or form with Alan's departure. I was as upset as anyone on the list about Alan, but thanks to Mike's words of wisdom, (and Alan's follow up note), I've come to realize that this is a positive step for Alan. Seeing as he's such a universally acknowledged great guy, if something makes him happier, I'm all for it. Let's not begrudge him his happiness, because we all owe him a great debt. The best direction for us to take, as so many have now suggested, is to move forward in as positive a manner as possible. This is a great time to be a Jewel fan, and to be an EDA. There are EDA gatherings and opportunities to meet galore: Lilith Fair shows, Living Room Tour shows, upcoming Jewel headlining shows, and more. I know from other lists (and there are some EDA's on some of the other lists I'm on as well) how rare and wonderful the spirit of community is here. And, we have focus on an artist who's at a very active stage of her career...which is a blessing of epic proportions, if you ask me. Let's stick together, stay positive and above all, full of hope... because as Ms. Kilcher says "it works". Have a great evening everyone, and as a reminder to my fellow Cnanadian EDA's, the MTV Movie Awards are on MuchMusic tonight, so if you haven't seen Jewel's performance of Foolish Games on that show yet, here's your opportunity. It was preceded with a pretty picture of Jewel clenching her teeth (probably in the midst of spurning miscellaneous men in "Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone") with the caption "Jewel, the 22-year-old quadruple platinum singer, wins the heart of the youthful crowd at Lilith Fair." Never mind she's really twenty-three. Boy, I haven't seen her in a while (April Fools' Day); her hair's getting long 'n luxurious. Carter - ----- LILITH: HEAR THEM ROAR By Richard Harrington Though it sometimes resembled a subway system at rush hour, Tuesday's Lilith Fair at the Merriweather Post Pavilion overcame its crowdedness with a tremendously positive energy. A box office smash in a summer of touring festival failures, Lilith Fair has posited itself as a celebration of women -- specifically in music, but clearly in spirit as well. It's not a question of distaff separation -- singer-songwriters Fiona Apple, Joan Osborne, Jewel and Lilith Fair founder Sarah McLachlan all fronted predominantly male bands -- but of craft and sensibility. The men in Apple's band appeared in dresses, obviously in the spirit of the event. As remarkable as the talent was on the Post Pavilion stage, the jampacked grounds were perhaps more revealing: The crowd was split perhaps 65-35 female-male, and the attitude was clearly "sisterhood is powerful" (as well as commercially viable). And while there was a wide range of ages evident, there seemed to be a tremendous number of teenage girls, jubilant in Lilith Fair's familial embrace and the safe harbor it offered in comparison to most rock-and-roll road shows. The only problem was numbers: There seemed to be several thousand ticket buyers who were not afforded any sight lines to the stage, and the video screens were effective only with the Fair's last two acts, Jewel and McLachlan. While the sound was for the most part excellent, the quieter songs tended to dissipate the farther they traveled into the crowd. There's clearly room for improvement. The generally youthful demographic may explain why 22-year-old Jewel was able to steal -- well, perhaps borrow -- the show from headliner McLachlan. Jewel was this particular lineup's most commercially successful artist. Her debut album, "Pieces of You," just went quadruple platinum, and it was kick-started by Jewel's constant touring over the last two years. Hardly surprising, then, that she exuded a riveting stage presence that augmented here crystalline voice, one that's formidable for its range and power. In fact, after a desultory set by the Cardigans, Jewel was more energized and a greater presence as a solo acoustic than the Swedish band was with five pieces. Drawing mostly from her album, Jewel opened with "Near You Always," one of many meditations on the twin themes of romantic joy and despair that ran through her performance. Others included "Don't," "Morning Song," her current hit single "Foolish Games," and her previous video-driven hits, "You Were Meant for Me" and the more inclusive "Who Will Save Your Soul?" Midway through the set, Jewel was joined by her band, most effectively on a new Dylanesque folk-rocker, "Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone," less so on a cover of Patti Smith's "Dancing Barefoot." Her encore was "Amen," a spiritual meditation that hung in the air like mist. - ----- Damn, I'm tired of typing. The rest of the article was kind reviews of McLachlan's and Apple's performances, less kind takes on the Osborne and Cardigans bits, and a complimentary footnote on Juliana Hatfield's second-stage act. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 31 Jul 1997 20:24:08 -0400 (EDT) From: RlngRockJE@aol.com Subject: EDAF Project :-) You guys will really like this! Good, glad to hear it. Anyway, I was sitting here naked (not really) and trying to figure out exactly when it was that I knew I loved Jewel's music and that it was somehow different from a lot of other music I had heard in a while. (Wow, that was bad sentence construction.) So there I was in May of 1996, minding my own business, when I heard something on the television. I walked into my living room and my girlfriend was watching MTV (Oh, the horror and the shame of it!). So, there was this goofy looking white woman singing in a bathroom and I thought to myself, "Well, gosh Jon, her voice sure is purty". As my birthday was coming up, I asked my girlfriend to get that CD for me. Then she asked me if I thought that girl was prettier than her. Of course I HAD to say no, even though.............. Well, anyway, I waited for a couple weeks and began to worry that maybe she was a Christian musician, since she talked all that stuff about saving souls and whatnot, but I figured maybe that would be good and I could broaden my horizons a little, you know? Well, I got the CD for my birthday. I spent more time with it than I did with my girlfriend. And I learned a few things: First: Never chose another woman over your girlfriend, particularly one that can sing. (More on this later.) Second: Jewel is NOT a Christian Rockette. Third: That "Don't" is probably one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. Now, you ask, was this the moment the music got me? No, not yet. And then I found this list. Weren't too many people on it and everyone seemed to know each other. Very warm. Very friendly. I heard a lot about purple bears and frisbee-defense teams and other such wonderful nonsense. There was some psychotic "Harris" guy who.....(hold on, .......okay, my lawyer has advised me I should say nothing further on this matter). All sorts of neat stuff was going on. And then they started talking about "Jewelstock". Well, I was on that bus quicker than my cats can flick kitty litter all over my bathroom floor (okay, you have to know me to get that one). A couple guys asked me to give them rides and I obliged. We were headed to Bearsville (after much RSVPing). One of the guys I gave a ride to gave me a copy of his "Innerchange" tapes. Popped those in and heard my first "Sometimes It Be That Way". I was amazed. I was swept away. I didn't understand all the words. I almost drove off the road into this little drainage ditch that you couldn't see until you were right up next to it. I was so happy I didn't immediately notice the terrified expressions of my companions. So, was this the moment the music got me? No, not quite. So we pull into the parking lot of the Bearsville Theater and all sorts of people are milling around and playing frisbee (Hmmmm.....) and generally having a good time. I park and get out and suddenly become totally terrified. I don't know any of these people!!! What am I, some kind of moron? (Don't answer that.) I drove all the way up here to hang out with a couple hundred people who could have murdered their families prior to gassing up their cars this morning? Oh dear. Then this random guy with a s**t-eating grin on his face walks up to me and hands me a Crunch bar. Caught me totally off-guard. He starts talking to me and I forget exactly what I was worried about. Turns out he lives like fifteen minutes away from me. Crazy, I tell you. So suddenly I'm talking to all kinds of people and having a great time. Then we go inside. We listen to Patty Griffin who is sensational. Brava. Then Jewel comes out. She reads jaw-dropping poetry. And then you know what she plays first?? Huh, huh, do ya? She plays "Don't". The first song of hers that ever really got to me. And she *opens* with it, no less. Was this then the moment the music got me? Was this the moment when this incredibly long post ended? No, but we're real close. So I sit there like a child getting blown away song after song after song. She brings the band out. She introduces a song called "Carnivore". The band gets into a groove behind her. The music swells and bounces off the walls. She arrives at the first chorus and as she sings the name of the song , the word itself, something tremendous happens to her voice. Right at the third syllable, the "-VORE", as it were. I melt. I am overwhelmed. I am stunned. I suddenly remember what drew me to music to begin with. A mere mortal creating a divine sound. I had not felt that unburdened and clear in years, nor since. I had stumbled across something beautiful and I wanted it to last forever. Naturally, that is the moment the music got me. My question is: Where were you?
