It was a faster version, but that's about all the info we had. Well when I asked her she said "You heard about that?" and turned to the crowd and said "You guys are going to kill me- I did a punk version of Jessica!" Of coarse, then I realized I had gotten Jewel excited so I got even more nervous and the conversation died. (tee hee) Seriously though it really hit me then who I was talking to and all I could do was smile. So maybe someday we'll get to hear some punk after all :) If you haven't heard Jessica you should have a listen- it's many veteran's favorite Jewel song. It's still my favorite slow one. James Reach lead an initiative (well, more of a petition to Jewel really :) to get Jewel to give the song more attention. So that's why she reacted the way that she did. If you want to know what Jessica sounds like the song Emily she did for the Crossing Guard with Jack Nicholson was based heavily on it. If you have Rare Angels Jessica's the first song on side 2. We hope to keep you well informed on a variety of things related to Sarah, ie. tours, special releases and appearances, etc. And please feel free to email me with your questions. I'll do my best to help out as best I can. Just remember, I only work 5 days a week... Boy! You've kept me busy, what with the incredible number of people joining this past week, I've hardly had a chance drink my glass of water here at my desk! It seems to evaporate before I can get to it...I hate when that happens. I wanted to inform all of you of some great news, before you enjoy your weekends: We've just been informed that Sarah's newest album Surfacing has become the number one selling album in Canada, and that this is actually Sarah's first #1 album! Right on, Sarah! She's also not doing too badly in the States, either, as you can imagine. Sarah has hit #2 on Billboard, only to be outdone by the soundtrack to the film Men In Black. Well, you might as well consider Sarah number one, since she's up against a soundtrack, and not an actual band, right? Also, the 'limited edition' version of Surfacing has now officially sold out in Canada! They're all gone, people! The American 'added value' version is sure to follow soon, so get them while you can. So, a big thanks to all the Sarah fans who have made this possible. Without you, Sarah couldn't have done it! I also love Jewel, along with the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Perfect Thyroid, Less Than Jake, and many other ska bands. One of my favorite things to do is to listen to jewel while I'm taking a shower. I love to sing along with her. I've been sick for two and a half years with chronic fatigue syndrome, so I've spent a lot of time at home. Listening to Jewel's music always makes me feel good, and I've really appreciated that lately. I've never been to a Jewel concert. There is going to be one in NY at the end of august, but I'm going to be away. I really want to see Jewel in cocert. My mother loves Jewel too, so we're going to see her together, if we get the chance. Anyway, I'm really glad I joined the list, because everyone seems to really love one another. Is the way in which cults recruit and indoctrinate their members an example of such mind control? In his book on mind control and ego destruction, Robert J Lifton lists eight elements that he found to be intrinsic to the complete and involuntary conversion of a person to a new and absolute philosophy, a process he calls totalism. They are: Milieu Control: The purposeful limitation of all forms of communication with the outside world, sleep deprivation, a change of diet, control over who one can see and talk to. Mystical manipulation: Teaching that the control group has a special (divine) purpose and that the subject has been chosen to play a special role in fulfilling this purpose. Need for purity: Convincing the subject of his former impurity (before joining the control group) and the necessity of becoming pure or perfect as defined by the group. Confession: Getting the subject to let down barriers and openly discuss innermost fears and anxieties. Sacred science: Convincing the control that the group's beliefs are the only logical system of belief and therefore must be accepted and obeyed. Loading the language: Creating a new vocabulary, by creating new words with special meanings understood only by members of the group, or by giving new and special meanings to familiar words and phrases. Doctrine over persons: Convincing the subject that the group and its doctrine take precedence over any individual in the group or any teaching from outside it. I don't know exactly what you consider to be "East Coast", but I have noticed that several people are trying to have a get-together for the Pittsburgh date of the Lilith Fair tour, Tuesday, August 12. That's actually a good time to have one, as the Lilith Fair has an off-date the night before--on Sunday, Aug. 10, they're in Columbus, Ohio (about 3 or 4 hours' drive from Pittsburgh), then they're off on Monday, Aug. 11, then the Pittsburgh show on the 12th. So, if we could get enough people who are following the tour around, are interested in having a get-together, and are free that night, we could probably put together a pretty good bash for ourselves if we wanted to. Anyone who's interested let me know--I've already talked to some people from around here who are, so if we can get to a critical mass then we can start to talk about what exacty we might want to do :) Take care, Greg :) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 26 Jul 1997 00:36:32 -0400 (EDT) From: Zelda6248@aol.com Subject: Re: njc:tape bag In a message dated 7/26/97 3:09:34 AM, ANDYMAN878@aol.com wrote: <> me neither!!!! someone e-mail me too! - -kirsten ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 26 Jul 1997 00:33:52 -0400 (EDT) From: Grrly1@aol.com Subject: Re: Re: Radio Astronomy > >better, I say be go back to the first idea and just kill him. > >>> > >you have problems if you want to kill someone because they told you to press >67.......wow i never knew people could get so offended by a person saying >something nice! >-kirsten woah woah woah chill babe. you need to read these posts with humor. Dan is a singer/songwriter who is like the love child of Bobcat Goldwaith and Hayden Drescher (whom people, more especially Canadian ppl might know simply as Hayden). He's funny and irreverant and I laughed as hard tonight at "Aliens came and f***ed the monkey" as I did the first times I heard MOPGGtW or Rocker Girl. One slight Jewel connection is a song about Henry Miller (no, not Arthur) and Marilyn Monroe... ...I find him marvelous to listen to and heartily recommend him!
