The day was finally here, one that we had been waiting on for a long time. Or something like that. Liz, Mia, and I were making our way to the Blossom Ampitheatre for the Cleveland Lilith show, and better yet Tom Miles and Laura Tonn were coming also! I picked up Liz in Toledo and we began our adventure... Liz was so excited I think my passenger's seat of my car has lost all its stuffing, she was squirming so much. We got there unbearable early and they wouldn't let us in. Finally Mia and her two friends got there, we went in hoping Laura & Tom would find us. Upon walking in we found none other than Mary Chafing Carpenter playing up on the 'third' stage at the top of the hill! There was hardly anybody there and we all got a special acoustic performance. NOTE TO ALL FUTURE LILITH-GOERS: GET THERE EARLY! I get the idea they have a special guest up on the third stage when the doors open every time to get people to come early and listen to the other performers.. We located Tara MacLean and chatted for a few minutes before she had to go up on the second stage to begin the day. We sat down in front of the stage and right before she started... Hey look! An EDA shirt! It's Tom (nice seeing you again Tom) and Laura (nice finally getting to meet you!!) just in time for a short but smooth Tara set: 1. Let Her Feel The Rain 2. Evidence 3. O Holy Tears 4. Jordan 5. Silence Tara looked super cute in a little straw type hat and black top. Meanwhile Bill looked good as well, from what I'm told, but ask Liz about all that. Anyway, it was a great feeling to sit by the Borders store and see dozens of people picking up Tara's CD after her performance. Kinda weird for us.. less than a month ago Liz, Mia, and I were seeing Tara in this tiny bar in Cleveland and now she was playing to this huge crowd on a hill... very cool. I picked up the Slowbrew compilation that I've wanted for a long time (anybody notice how Tara's name is repeatedly spelled incorrectly?) and some of the nifty free postcards for Tara and Delerium. The posters and T-Shirts were outrageously priced so I passed.. I think they're a lot cheaper on the web site, even after shipping. Anyway, we chilled for awhile, watched September 67, Tracy Bonham, and Wild Colonials (who ROCKED btw) and then it was time for our first big exciting part of the day. I let Tom borrow my ticket (Mia Liz and I were in the middle, about 10 rows up) for Paula Cole... my first time seeing her, she was on fire. No pun there or anything. Next was Fiona Apple, whom I saw in February but was very unimpressed. Well I tell you, from up close she brought the house down. She was definitely the show stealer... at one point a man in a front section yelled something she didn't understand, so she asked him to say it again. He wouldn't... and released a fury of rage from Fiona as she demanded to know what he said... she's hilarious. Which brings up a few interesting happenings at this show: 1. A dark-haired man on the hill was tossing around some frisbees. Now, do not worry, not even a discus champion could throw a frisbee from that distance and get it to the stage, (Harrises and Sinjin, Harris defense team take note.) Anyway, the security guys started climbing up the hill to get this guy, and he starts whipping all his frisbees to get rid of them. This is all happening during the end of Paula's set. So I am sitting there, trying to clap for Paula, and boo at the security guys, all at the same time. The guy got hauled away... we saw him again later though but looked... different. 2. Liz demanded I beat up a certain fellow she had 'met' in Toledo, a guy who had caused her all kinds of trouble buying tickets. Those who know me realize #1 I am not the kind of person to instigate fights anyway, and #2 I am not big enough to win a fight with anyone. In any case, did anyone see this guy after the end of Fiona's set. I guess I just got inspired by "Shadowboxer." Moving on: Mary Chafing Carpenter was next. I was VERY impressed by her performance: in fact I think I'm going to stop calling her that. Anyway, the highlight of the performance was when a number of Lilith performers came out on stage with her to end her stay on the tour, singing... something, I really don't remember. Anyway, on the same stage singing together were Sarah M., Tara M., Tracy B., everyone. Even Bill Bell, Tara's guitarist, came out and played mandolin. It was VERY cool. Finally it was time for Sarah. I can't say enough. A very powerful performance, maybe. She really had the crowd in her hand... fantastic. We said bye to Mia, her friends, and Tom and Laura, and were home. Liz and I still had to look at our tickets to believe we had actually been there... - -tim 'burkeman' - ---------------------------------------- "Being on the list gets you on the list" ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Jul 1997 14:55:37 -0400 (EDT) From: BillYeh@aol.com Subject: FG video, "jewel is champ" I apologize if you consider this minor and inconsequential, but I wanted to clarify something that has been bothering me. In the FG video, the "kimono girls" are NOT wearing kimonos. Just wanted to help my fellow EDAs be more accurate! On another note... >....... i havent written to the list in a while... >and i think i deserve to voice my opinion... i dont understand this whole >thing about jewel and her popularity???.... i dont get it???... so you all >dont want her to be poplar??/ ... you dont want her to make it big???.... you >rather see her back in her ghetto van freezing... and eating roadkill... >getting harrased by the street bums... whats with you people... i know you >just want her to yoursleves.... like children... its like romperoom on this >list.... what kind of angels are these???.. > In a separate post, >1) We are all here to love Jewel, and MOST of us are behind her 100% > note: A lot of the EDA have been posting on how horrible it is that >she is making tons of money, and is doing what she loves. Gentlemen, perhaps you might re-read the posts that people, including myself, have placed. If I gave you the impression that I do not want Jewel to be popular, and that I want her to be poor, I apologize, because that is not what I meant. I believe I said that it's sad to see that she's becoming OVER-popular (IMO). The reason I say this is that, yes, there is less likelihood that people, not just EDAs, but people in general will be able to see her shine in an intimate setting. No, there is more likelihood that new fans of hers will see her in a large, arena-like venue, and that the crowd will be unruly, and that they may have a negative concert experience. Certainly, they will not have the opportunity to see Jewel with only a couple of hundred people, and experience her words and music without people yelling and screaming through it. THAT is what I regret about her over-exposure. Also, I think it very likely that, despite what Jewel says, she will change in reaction to this popularity. She may no longer have fans come visit her backstage, she may no longer take the time to sign every fan's autograph request (considering the huge increase in the number of fans). She may no longer choose to go see new artists play in small clubs and bars, for fear that her appearance would distract attention from those very artists. She may no longer feel capable of just going to her room and resting for an evening, being requested by promoters to attend this function and that party. Now, I do not, repeat, do not fault her for this. I think it is an almost inevitable human reaction. However, I do not believe that there is any way that she will not change because of her new popularity. The above words represent my own opinion only. Please feel free to disagree with me, to show me why you believe otherwise. If you feel a need to flame, you can do that too. I don't promise to read it, though. ;-) Thanks, Bill ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Jul 1997 15:02:43 -0400 () From: Jeff Kirschner Subject: JC: Lilith webcast Hey all, Just a little piece of news I found at the Addicted to Noise site regarding a Lilith Fair webcast. I woke up this morning, sunshine slipping in through the blinds and blanketing me; a soft breeze blowing in across my skin like the tender strokings of a lover. Wake up...it's a beautiful day. I went outside and just like the wind and sunshine had told me, it, indeed, was beautiful. The air was filled with whispered music--the rustling of leaves, water spilling over rocks in the stream, birds singing--that in it's quiet way was a roar loud enough to fill one's soul. The world is /such/ a beautiful place. The world is /so/ amazing. Mysterious. A true miracle beyond our comprehension. I forget that sometimes...driving at light-speed in my car, worrying about the reprecussions of being late. The beauty is quiet and unassuming, only there if you bother to look. I walked barefoot through the grass, the coolness of it almost a tangile expression of summer green. That's how I'd describe green to someone who lacked sight--cool summer grass under your feet. I walked by trees, by flowers--it was astounding. We look at life and we point to ourselves, to animals, to bugs. However, we so often forget that plants are /alive/, at least in a sense. They birth, they grow, they die. There is some amazing, untouchable life-force to /everything/. In the face of this, I can only be amazed...and incredibly humbled. Under you, around you, above you...existence is so huge; so incomprehnsible; yet...so delicate. The beauty of the whole thing takes my breath away. Humans are part of this beauty, not outside of it. And just like the great complexity of existence in general, we will never fully understand ourselves. How did we get here? What is our purpose? These answers will probably never be known to us; that or we could never possibly understand them. But try to remember, we are /all/ part of this beauty; part of this mystery; part of this MIRACLE. The list has been very hostile of late. Having varying opinions is just one characteristic of humanity. Some others are: compassion, respect, understanding. Our opinions cannot be forced upon others, but why would we want them to be? Our opinions will not be heard better if we yell, insult, use harsh language...and in my experience, reacting like that tends to close the other person's mind. So, please, when you feel yourself getting angry because of something someone has said or done...try to remember that we are -ALL- beautiful. We are each our own miracle. Have a beautiful day everyone. That is 90% religious propaganda started by Christian groups (not singling out people, they actually WERE Christian organizations) who wanted to keep people away from MM concerts. The group is considering suing for libel. I don't follow them, so they may have already. (whoever put the animal thing also put music content, so that's cool w/me) 2)I personally don't like MM, but they are just as legitimate musicians as our own Jewel. She isn't a bad guitarist, as some people say. She LIKES her sound (as do we all). MM aren't "bad musicians", they LIKE shockrock metal. I don't like them because I don't like their style. So when I say, "I think they suck" or even "They suck" you know it's my opinion of their musical style and structure. But referring to somebody's ability to play is a technical issue. Off subject, but take Acid Jazz. I hate it, but one of my favorite artists, Trey Anastasio, did a side-project with Jon Fishman in that style. I laugh at anyone who argues that they can't play, yet many Phish fans hate the album (myself included). In the same way, I don't like The Wallflowers, but concede their technical ability. The music is well written, but I find the arrangements of the guitars and organ ruin the songs for me. I find it very sterile. But if you don't and you like that sound, you may like the band. Either way, they are at least decent musicians, if not, better. So are MM. Just a different genre, people. This has not kept me from writing music, however. My lyrics are pretty good, and I usually write really original stuff, but I now know that I can't play Jewelstock while writing a new song. A few nights ago, I sat down to write a new lyric for the band I recently formed (# of practices:1, without the drummer). After a couple of minutes, I found myself staring at a masterpiece. This would be a nice story of Jewel inspiring yet another EDA to write great songs if it weren't for one small fact: The song I had written down was Angel Standing By. I had unconsciously started to write what I was hearing. So I erased the lyrics and looked at what I had before my mind slipped....Wee. I have no idea even what word this was intended to become. Week? Weed? Possibly Weezer (one of my fav bands)? Has anyone else had any similar experiences with writing? Just wondering. Josh "If ya ask me, I don't think the words are worth ****. Hi everyone! I just got off the phone with my best friend in the world and she told me that she was getting sick of Jewel!! Gasp!!!! This is horible!! She is the one who told me about Jewel and told me to buy her CD. Without her, I wouldn't be on this list today! I was not mean to her though, I just said "Why?" And she said that Jewel's voice was getting annoying! (another gasp!) I didn't make a big deal about it though, i was very calm! Has this happened to any of you out there? What do you do? That was one main thing we had in common. Sorry to bother all of you, thanks for reading this far! TTYL! - -Kelly :) p.s. continuing the circle of hugs... *HUG* :) p.p.s. Bob Kiss me son of god They Might be Giants ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Jul 1997 18:11:37 -0400 From: Gianfranco Covello Subject: NJC: What this list has done for me (Warning, happy post) Hi all, in spite of what all that's happening, i thought i'd lighten things up a bit :-) and aren't i the perfect person to do it? ;-) Now this gets kinda long, but read it :-) Ok, when i first joined, which was about 4-5 months ago, i didn't know what to expect, i knew there would be alot of Jewel stuff going on but never in my wildest dreams thought that there would be this many people on this list, (when i joined it was said that there was about 1000+ people on, and now i guess its said that there are about 1400+) So there were alot of Non Jewel posts, which for the most part i enjoyed. The first thing i have this list to thank for is for updating me on the Jewel concerts, i joined the list and found out that Jewel would be playing a concert close to me only about 1 week from when i joined... so i hurried and bought myself a ticket to my first Jewel concert! and it was THE concert.. it was over 2hrs long and she was so into playing for us, it was also the concert where she brought people up on stage to help her play a song! all i can say is wow! :-) and to make things better, i also got to watch the RugBurns!!! they rock!!! :-) So that was the first great thing this list has done for me, then i started chatting on IRC in the #jewel room and met so many amazing people, to name a few that i met back then are Dan Stark, Tim Burke, Mia Vlah, Erica Cavallo, Jon Atkins?(Wells) etc.. and that list is in the hundreds now :-) too many to name :-) after about a couple of months on the list it was announced that the EDA's were having an EDAdventure in NJ at Rob and Tammy Campells house, and well i left everything and went, all the way from Toronto, that 10 hr train ride still gives me nightmares :-) I can't put what i experienced into words.. that experience will stay with me forever :-) I met the likes of Dan "the radio man" Stark, Tim Burke(man) Amelia S Vlah, Tammy (EdaMommy) Campell, Rob (??) Campell ;-) and kids :-) Eric (crashboy) Montas, Tom O, Tom P, Mitch (EDAwannabe) Weiss, hmm, i better not get into this again, i'll write forever :-) i met many wonderfull EDA's :-) So that was the second great thing that this list has done for me :-) So, you say, there's more?? well yeah there is :-) During the first month i was on the list, before i went to the toronto Jewel concert, i emailed a few Toronto area EDA's, and News Only EDA's such as Steve Ito, who told me about an up and coming canadian talent names Tara Maclean, i couldn't go see her show back then, but when she came back around these parts (thanks to Dan's tour updates) i went to go see her, well that show was amazing and i was hooked, as you all know :-) and now i'm on this Tara binge :-) can't get enough of her, since then i've seen and talked to her many times, and been in contact with her manager. Including Tara, this list has opened my eyes to many new artists, and many new friends, which i'm proud to call friends... and i'm looking forward to all the future endeavors that this list has planned :-) such as the upcoming Toronto lilithfairs.. which i can't wait for :-) Oh and how can i forget the G-String Gianny episodes :-) So i guess these are the reasons that i'm not leaving this list in light of what's been going on.. i just hope everyone realizes that this list is here to help and inspire us, whether you believe it or not, and using it to flame and argue is just a waste of space "in my opinion" :-) And i just recieved a post from Mr.BB which has a letter from Jewel to us, and its just Jewel being herself, gotta love her :-) take care everyone... - -Gian- (one person who doesn't take this list for granted) :-) ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #579 ***************************
