Really it`s about musical tastes- Dear angels, those who know me(well and not so well=), are aware of my love for the industrial/new goth/rock-band Marilyn Manson. Now, trough the times I`ve been a fan, I`ve been slammed hundreds of times by other people, who do *not* apreciate this band; which makes me sad.Not because these people don`t like the same band as I do, but because they have to dislike *me* for my tastes. I`ve never trashed anyone for their musical tastes, and I wouldn`t want anyone to dislike *me* for what I like to listen to. People can`t seem to accept that we`re all different. Diversity in musical-taste seems to be a complete no-no; I like MM, I like Jewel, Bob Dylan, Madonna, NIN, Prince, Bach, Ani DiFranco, Joy Division, Billie Holliday, Marcus Miller, David Bowie, the great Pavarotti.. does that make me weird? Think about it; I bet all you angels out there wouldn`t enjoy being trashed for being a Jewel-fan.. Think about it. We *are* different... Shouldn`t we accept that fact? JewelStock was a year ago tonight :) A few hours ago, a newer person on this list called this, "one of the dumbest newsgroups I have ever subscribed too." Hardly. In my opinion, it has to be one of the best there is on the internet. Craig (Cisalpine@aol.com), you are new here, therefore you haven't been able to see what this list really is about. It's just been a bad week. Trust me. A year ago tonight 200+ people, members of this list and their guests, came from the four corners of this country (and Canada), to witness a free and private concert by Jewel, all to show her appreciation for all this list had done for her. Dumbest newsgroup? Hardly. A&M recording artist Patty Griffin opened for Jewel that night, also appearing for free, and blew away the crowd. She and her manager are in awe of this mailing list and the support we have shown Patty since. I talked with her manager Mike Baker on the phone Wednesday night for nearly an hour and told him tons of stuff that has happened on this list in the last year. He was in awe. A year ago tonight, after giving arguably the most stunning performance of her career, (a 2 hour and 45 minute show to boot!), Jewel (and Patty too :) came outside of the theatre at 12:15am, and hung with us for nearly an hour, chatting, posing for pictures with everyone, trading nose tweakings, signing autographs....just spending time with some of her most sincere fans, Patty with her new found fans. During that show, you could hear a pin drop. No screaming fans, no one yelling "take it off Jewel", no one yelling "Yodel!!", no one yelling "I LOVE you"....even though we all did love her. Heck, how could you not have fallen in love with her that night? She was SO one of us, so close to everyone of us. We were family :) It was the first time Jewel felt comfortable enough at a show to read poetry, opened the show with it at that! She knew she had many of her hard core fans there. Out of 61 songs she performed at the two concerts (oh, did I mention there was a show the next night too? Jam-packed the place with 330 people!), she did only six songs from her Pieces Of You CD, and we didn't hear her 'hit at the time' Who Will Save Your Soul, nor her next hit You Were Meant For Me. She knew we wanted rare stuff, we knew she wanted to perform rare stuff. The 225 people in the theatre that first night became one. We were all on the same wavelength. It was simply amazing. It was musical heaven.... Dumbest newsgroup? Hardly. That night & those three days in Woodstock were possibly the most amazing 3 day period in my life. MANY list members have written similar sentiments about the event. It wasn't just the shows, it was meeting each other. Meeting many friends we had only known previously as email addresses. Yes, there had been small 'list member get togethers' prior to that night/weekend, but I can't recall one that had more than 8 people plan to get together. Beginning then and since that weekend, this list has been a family. Closer than any of us would have guessed. We've had list member gatherings (EDA gatherings) of various sizes nearly every month since. For most of the bigger ones, Jewel wasn't even in the same state. There wasn't a show. There was just a bunch of friends getting together. A month after Jewelstock, 40+ EDAs met at Hampton Beach NH for two days at the beach with a Jewel concert that Saturday night. There were 30+ people, driving and FLYING in from all over the country to Toledo Ohio for LizStock. The occasion? Liz's 16th birthday party and broomball game. It was in the middle of winter too! (Many of the attendees had never met another list member before) Jewel wasn't in Ohio that day. There was the 40+ people mid-May Six Flags NJ gathering (no Jewel), there was the Rockfest 97 gathering (OK, Jewel decided to show up for that one, bless her heart), there is the JewelStock Reunion gathering tonight and tomorrow in Woodstock. Fifty three people plan to attend. I'm not sure, but I think Jewel will be in Alaska this time. Dumbest newsgroup? Hardly. Other events and occurrences happened too. EDAs got together and very likely saved at least two fellow list members from making a permanent and final mistake. They may not be totally healed, as these things take time. However they are still here and still on this list to feel the love we all have for them, those of us that know them. You both know who you are, I love you both, consider yourselves hugged :) Just this last April and May, the members of this list grouped together, led by a handful of EDAs who made an astronomical organizational effort, and donated nearly $5000 to help pay for a specially equipped van for one James Paul Kalinick, a now present day list member (or planning to be one) who sadly was injured in an accident that has left him in a paraplegic state. We regularly tree out tapes of Jewel, and now even two other artists. Quite often it's high quality stuff, in some cases source material given to us by Jewels management, or at least given permission by the mangagment. This brings up another point. I'd really wish folks would just be patient and not complain about the new CD coming out until late this year or early 1998. On this list we HAVE NEW material. It's out there, we call it "angelfood". It's quite good too :) We've even treed alot of it. There's a good 65+ NON-"Pieces Of You" songs available for trade or dub on this list that are high quality, depending on what generation dub you run into. There are probably 100+ other songs available that are on older treed tapes. Go out and find it. These tapes won't fall into your lap or happen overnight for you, you gotta get someone to copy them. It will take time, but with patience, you can get copies of some impressive stuff that more-so shows Jewel's range and talent than PoY does. (Not that Poy doesn't, it's just limited to 14 songs. The rest of the USA and the world is really just discovering Jewel. A year ago, she was just nearing the 2,000,000 CDs sold mark. It's nearly 5,000,000,000 now. Most of that last 3,000,000 has been in the last 6 months. Look at how many have even posted on this list recently that the had bought the CD in the last few months. It's uncommon and bad business to release a new album while the previous one is selling well. I'm betting Foolish Games will bring PoY back up into the top ten. Again, I feel, for the type of mailing list this is, it's the best mailing list on the internet. I'd put it up there against any other list. Wanna know why that is? It's because we are basic humans. A vast majority of humans are good. But why are we all here? That's easy...Jewel. We all are fans of Jewel. But why are many of us so close? That's easy too. Two reasons, Jewel....and Jewelstock. Jewelstock gave birth to a new list during the 43 nights from the date it was announced to the date it occurred. This list became a family. The ones that could go were in glee, and it showed in the posts to the list. Those that could not go, JewelSTUCK as they dubbed themselves, while extremely jealous were also extremely excited (maybe it's because they new we were going to tree out tapes of the concerts later :), and still they had an amazing sense of humor about the fact they could not go, as evidenced in their posts to the list in that period. Many of them have made it since to other EDA gatherings, whether at Jewel concerts or just for the heck of it. Because of Jewelstock, many EDAs love this list dearly. Many others have left for various reasons, or joined the news-only list, but I'm sure they also hold a place in their heart for Jewel, Jewelstock, the EDAs and this list. It was an occasion to remember. (damn, I gotta get a heffin', I gotta drive to the Jewelstock reunion :) One last thing, in addition to thanking the people that make up this list now and did so in the past, I'd also like to take this anniversial opportunity to once again thank the people who worked with me on the Jewelstock project and/or performed in JewelStock last summer. It was a job well done. It was an event that will remain in my mind, heart and soul the rest of my life. :) Stand up and take a bow please: Dennis Harris, Mark "Crunch" Nissley, Bill Goodliff, Richard "Akira" Chang, Dan Stark, Phil "The T-shirt guy" Kelnhofer, Steve "Skinny Pete" Arrington (and his crew, whose names I can never remember), Alan & Amy Jo Bershaw, Jackie Fitzpatrick, Lisa Schiller, Anita "Duff" Martin, Patty Griffin and her manager Mike Baker, and of course Hiranya, Lenedra and Jewel. When I joined the list ( May of 96 ), we used to have about 17 posts a day ( TOPS ). After JewelStock, we had a huge amount of newbies in a huge amount of time, and a lot of the list vets left, because of negativity . BUT.. it was a hell of a lot worse than it is right now. Let's remember some things, shall we ? 1) We all have the right to say whatever we want here ( unless administration says otherwise- Jeff owns list list, and what Jeff says, goes ) 2) We are all allowed to be as negative as we want- whether we're talking about Jewel, or MM, or Rosie O'Donnell. 3) However... most people here don't WANT to hear negative stuff. So when you start having an argument on the list... TAKE IT OFF THE LIST. Argue in private. None of us want to see it and it just pisses us off. 4) Remember that things will get better, but if you don't want to wait- don't.Don't write to the list and threaten to unsubscribe. I decided a couple of months BEFORE joining the list, that my cynicism had become too much of myself. I chose to lose my general arrogance and mistrust and become a little more open and positive. THEN I joined the list. Before it turned into a battleground, this list provided me with a place to put into practice -- without judgment (due to unfamiliarity) -- my changing ideals. I joined no church. I entered a community where people strived for sensitivity and openness in all they did. I didn't join a Greenpeace clone. I didn't join Amnesty International. I didn't join the Heaven's Gate cult. To me, being an EDA means that I strive to meet MY ideals. I want to be true to myself. I believe that those truest to themselves are those that are most compassionate, respectful and open to the ideas of others. If this community becomes any more poisoned by the insensitivity, cynicism and arrogance that I seek to escape, I shall have to leave. That's one thing I've learned in my struggle to become a better person: when your spirit is being polluted, know that you can't change people, but you can change who the people around you are. We (all 7 billion of us) are ALL everyday angels. Just in our being we are all beautiful. It's our choice to deny our beauty or share it with others. I was hoping to continue to share mine with all of you. I was hoping that you'd want to share yours with me. Or even if you believed me to be the most naive idealist in the world, and you thought all this inner-beauty and angel talk was complete bunk, I was hoping for at least a little understanding. Perhaps you are not understanding the fact that I am not talking about you or or anyone else that is giving a little constructive criticism. For like the 3rd time now, the people I am talking about are the ones that are whining and arguing about EVERYTHING. They say they don't like anything she does. They don't like her for being popular, they don't like her new video, they think she's being a jerk by not releasing her new album now, and on and on and on. And no I'm not saying that you should like the FG video just because it's a Jewel video. I was simply expressing my opinion that all of her videos are great and I doubt she would make a bad one. If she did, however, I would not say it was still a good video. Now would you please leave me alone seeing as how I am not talking about those of you giving constructive criticism, but I am talking about all of you that seem to hate everything she does. For all of you that just complain about everything she does why don't you go and listen to that damn freak Marilyn Manson. SURPRISE! She's not on this mailing list! She doesn't read a single work you say. And I know she cares about us EDA's, I never said she didn't. I said she doesn't care about what we think, which means that we are never ever going to affect anything she does despite what anyone on here says. And yes, plenty of you people DO think you own her. Always talking about how it's so bad that she became popular, because now she's not YOUR Jewel anymore. That sounds like you think you own her to me. And Guess What!!!??? She is popular because of you too! Every single person that listens to her and atttends her concerts is making her more popular and famous, so if you want her to stay YOUR Jewel, you are just going to have to stop listening to her, and maybe then she will stop making lots of money and being really happy and will have to live in the back of her van again, eating stray animals when she can't afford food. Or maybe even picking scraps out of the garbage can of a nearby restaurant. Then you will have your Jewel back! I am a Christian and Christian religions are everthing spiritual, where as the Church of Satan teaches that there is one place of afterlife, you only live once, so go for it. ex.- If I wanna have sex with that girl over there, then I should go ahead and do it. Also, they preach to look out for you, and your 10 friends, 'cause you are the only ones going to the place of afterlife. Yes she does... some things at least... We have connections to Jewel on here and a few people talk to her mother Nedra. > SURPRISE! She's not on this mailing list! She doesn't read a single work > you say. And I know she cares about us EDA's, I never said she didn't. Hold on.. where's that other post? Oh I lost it.. but you did indeed say she didn't care - let me quote some old punk band I think called Green Day, but let me change a line.. "You're a walking contradictiooooon and you ain't got no right" > I said she doesn't care about what we think, which means that we are > never ever going to affect anything she does despite what anyone on here > says. Oh my god you're wrong AGAIN - she cares a LOT about what we think... if we didn't think we LIKED her then she'd never sell records.. she wants to know what we think - such as our opinions on songs and things like that. Think before you speak > And yes, plenty of you people DO think you own her. Nobody thinks they own her - speak for yourself > Always talking about how it's so bad that she became popular, because > now she's not YOUR Jewel anymore. The people that stated that have their reasons... And that's not one of them > That sounds like you think you own her to me. Sounds... wow... guess your mommy didn't tell you to not believe everything you hear > And Guess What!!!??? She is popular because of you too! Every single > person that listens to her and atttends her concerts is making her more > popular and famous, Oh so me, the person who sits in her room listening to Jewel on her CD player and not telling anyone about it - I'm making her popular? Please explain HOW > so if you want her to stay YOUR Jewel, you are just going to have to > stop listening to her, who did you take a lesson in theories from? Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen? Please... sir.. you're going to have to think a little before you speak > and maybe then she will stop making lots of money and being really happy and > will have to live in the back of her van again, eating stray animals when she > can't afford food. Or maybe even picking scraps out of the garbage can of a > nearby restaurant. Then you will have your Jewel back! She never ate stray animals, my god... what is your problem? Besides that if you ever read any of the poems in her POY booklet you'll read: "Upon Moving Into My Van" joy. Pure Joy. I am What I always wanted to grow up and be.....etc... She was happy being in her van before even being famous so I doubt it'd hurt her very much.. Besides that.. I believe maybe you should research before you pin opinions on people who never made them... > Cisalpine ttyl - -linda the LOVABLE EDA :) ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #578 ***************************
