My question is, when they show her > face, is that her or is that Jewel? I think it's the double, mainly because No, it's Jewel that they show. Jewel wears the black dress for most of the video, but for those couple shots that you see her "double's" face, well... it's not the double, it's Jewel. I know that for sure. Watch it again, and you'll see that it's Jewel. Unless of course, the double is Jewel's identical twin! ;) Remember that post from Lenedra when she was describing the video? I'm pretty sure I remember her saying that Jewel was wearing a black dress for most of it and a white for a little bit. However, I have noticed one shot where as the double and the camera are turning around a little bit, you can see the actual double's face for a split second. But she looks quite different from Jewel, so Jewel is wearing the white dress in parts of the vid. ALSO... ANYONE CONFUSED ABOUT THE VINYL NEW RELEASE READ THIS!!!! I've noticed some people that are confused and think that the vinyl release is actually Jewel's new album. It's not!!! The vinyl album is a re-release of POY that has 4 (I think) extra tracks that aren't on the regular POY. As far as I can remember, the extra tracks are: Emily, Everything Breaks, Chime Bells, and.... crap, can't remember the other one. But anyway, for anyone who's confused about it...Jewel does not have a new album coming out, it's just POY on vinyl w/ some extra stuff. :) *hugs* Emily ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Jul 1997 11:13:48 -0700 From: Victor Igor Wasylczenko Subject: [Fwd: I'm famous! I return to San Diego after being gone for close to three years, and I'm famous among the incredible singer/songwriter circuit, even though no one actually knew who I was. I've been asked at least a half dozen times at various coffeehouses, after mentioning that I'm on the internet, if I'm familiar with the EDA's (Every Day Angels - the Jewel list which I helped found and am no longer a member of.) Tonight I got to see another of my old favorites, Joy Eden Harrison, perform at a nice coffeehouse called Clair de Lune. For anyone who's interested in the Jazz-influenced ecto thread, Joy would be a wonderful purchase. Her first (and still only) disc is called Angel Town on Cargo Records. It falls somewhere between kd lang's torch songs and the Holly Cole Trio. Joy sings original compositions that have a bit of a hipster jazz feel mixed with a bit of torch song chanteusse, a touch of Joni Mitchell and a touch of Rickie Lee Jones. (Speaking of RLJ, I missed her recent San Diego performance, but the papers talked about her interesting new album and it's wanderings into trip-hop. Anyone heard it?) Joy opened her set with a bunch of songs I knew from Angel Town and years ago, though now she fronts a jazz trio that consists of her on guitar and a keyboardist and drummer. The sound was fuller and freer than the acoustic performances I'd seen before. Following this, she spread out into her new material, which takes many twists and turns from what she was doing before. Some of the tunes took a wilder jazz approach a la Amy X Neuburg, while others, like Yellow, mixed in (possibly beat influenced) storytelling. There was an a capella number which I vaguely recall had comments relating love and tournequets, before the set ended with the drummer and keyboardist clapping out counter rhythms as a backup to Joy's singing. I was amazed at the variety and experimentation in the set, since previously she'd been working in a much narrower range. I chatted with her on her break and talked about seeing her years ago (winning immediate bonus points by noting that she looked much younger now then she did then [which was also true]). She asked me about the EDAs, and we talked about the early Jewel days. She praised the EDAs highly for a house concert tour some people are setting up, and was amazed at how many people had been exposed to her music due to some of her songs showing up on a popular Jewel bootleg. I admitted to having made that bootleg, and she was really enthusiastic, thanking me repeatedly for all the help in getting her music out there. Later, after an equally strong second set, she dedicated the final song to me and the owner of the coffeehouse, while telling the story of the underground tape circulating around the internet. The song was one of my old favorites (not on Angel Town, but on the bootleg), which she introduced as God Damn Cowboy, or the Pony Boner Song, as it apparently became known around the Innerchange. Anyway, I was quite flattered by all the attention. She was taping the show tonight, and a bunch of other shows to shop around as demos for her next album, and I encouraged her to consider selling some on her mailing list (or at least giving me copies!). If any of the above info has intrigued people enough to want a disc, and you can't find it in your local store, let me know and I'll be happy to pick up a copy at a future show. She also asked me about the scene in Maryland, and I had to admit that as far as I could tell, the singer/songwriter world in San Diego was far above anywhere I knew of. There are at least a half dozen coffeehouses that provide quality places for top notch local artists to perform almost any night of the week. I could easily see an excellent show any night this week except Monday, which is really remarcable. While I know there isn't even a single venue in Maryland, and probably only Iota in Arlington, that provides anything like what you have here, I was wondering if there are any other cities that are as supportive of local musicians (singer/songwriters in particular)? I think the kimono's added to the video. They were kind of eerie, and that only added to the darkness of the song itself. They really didn't look like satanists, because satanists can be ordinary people like you and me. The video was wonderful I thought, althought this was only the third music video I've ever seen. The song to me seems like a dark song, and the coloring, lighting, kimono girls, and dead tree's all added to that. They really enhanced the video. I loved it, but I also realize that everyone's entitled to their own opinions, so I respect yours and everyone else who has thought the video was not so great. I just curious to know how well Time mag featuring Jewel is selling in your region. In my region the Time has been selling pretty well(of course it might have something to do with me buying two copies). I have the foolish games sheet music(piano) I have the lyrics. But they are on separate papers, and I can't get them to fit together. Partly because you can't hear the piano well sometimes on the POY album, and the piano music doesn't carry the melody. So I was wondering, does anone know where I can find piano music with the lyrics printed on that page, without having to buy It because I have no cash, and no music store near me. Any other ideas would also be helpful. I can't wait to see it. However, what is this body double that you guys keep talking about? I don't quite get it. >> Saw the video and it was absolutely fabulous! I was very impressed with the artisticness of it all. The body double was used for a sort of "mirroring" scene, where you see the back of the body double, with Jewel facing the camera just beyond the body double, and they are doing mirror image movements. Does that make any sense?? It was just a beautiful job all around, and I think it did a really great job of portraying not only the feeling of the song itself, but it also embodied what Jewel is (at least to me) and sort of her own spirituality and uniqueness. Not to preach or anything, but sometimes some of the videos I see on stations like MTV and VH1 and Much Music are a little wacko, having little to do with song and too much to do with the use of big bright strobe lights and things like that. A good example of a video I liked (although I really dislike the singer, Marilyn Manson) was Manson's video for the "man you fear" or something like that. It was a recreation of Shirley Jackson's short story "The Lottery" which is basically how every year the entire town gathers and picks out the name of a town person who will subsequently be stoned to death. THis person is sort of the scapegoat for all hostility in the town. Sounds a bit sadistic, I know, but Marilyn Manson weaved it into the song in a really interesting way. Read the actual short story by Shirley Jackson. It's really good. Wow, I really babbled on, didn't I?? Sorry.... :) Alana. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Jul 1997 13:59:53 -0400 (EDT) From: JCAgent007@aol.com Subject: Re: jewel-digest V2 #552 Whew, damn, sorry, I'm too lazy to read through all of this, but what Dan said or whoever, they are right about encores ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Jul 1997 22:32:18 -0400 (EDT) From: Zelda6248@aol.com Subject: Re: EDA Shirts How do you get an EDA shirt and what do they look like? - -kirsten ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Jul 1997 22:32:18 -0400 (EDT) From: Zelda6248@aol.com Subject: Re: EDA Shirts How do you get an EDA shirt and what do they look like? - -kirsten ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Jul 1997 21:00:32 -0400 (EDT) From: ErinQ0874@aol.com Subject: Re: EDA Shirts I'm new to this EDA stuff, and I hope you don't mind me asking, but what do the shirts look like? Some obnoxious morning radio someone or other was talking about her. apparently my 'il timed snooze hitting just missed a song. at any rate... I was half awake, but from what I recall they were talking about her being on the cover of Time and I believe mentioned Lillith (and that she wasn't gonna be at ours, etc. etc) then said "we have a song here we'd like to dedicate, a song for Jewel. We dedicate this song to Jewel" and played "Noooooboodyyy shoooows 'M Betterrrrrr" referring back to that over talked about grammy dress I guess. GET OVER IT ALREADY. This station had a bit to say back when it happened too. but ya'd think they'd find someother anticdote by now. eh well, whatever, just thought I'd share. and there's apparently a mini-gathering happening tomorrow at the Cleveland Lilith Fair! On some accounts, once you get too many mail messages, or your mailbox reaches a certain size, the system will start rejecting the messages that it receives with that error. Basically just wait a few days and hope they check their e-mail..then try again. Gerrit ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #572 ***************************
