I just mainly wanted to say I'm sorry for raping you virginal queen. I didn't mean to be a criminal. Before you press the reply button, read the rest of what I have to say, then proceed in torching, flaming, and burning me to a crisp. Time and time again I have been distraught and disappointed in letters that have been sent to the list, crying "I want my Jewel back! I don't like her popularity!" I understand this view 100%. Because I do think she may be a little overexploited right now. Recently, she has been molested by the media...but it's all for good. There have been a few people's letters that I just read that think her popularity is a good thing, just like me. But I'm going to continue with my thoughts, take the other side of the popularity coin (which must be tails) and yell...I'M GLAD I GOT TO KNOW JEWEL...be it through her popularity. My little story starts off like this. The first time I ever heard any mention of Jewel was last March of '96. She was on the VH-1 winter lodge thing. Unfortunately, I never saw it...So I never saw Jewel. Then about a month later or so I began seeing her video for WWSYS every now and then. Well, I sorta fell in love with her. But I admit it wasn't for her music or lyrics. It was mainly her looks. The problem was...I didn't like WWSYS. It bothered me that she asked that question, because I know who will save my soul if I ask Him and work hard at being His servant. So I didn't buy the CD. After readin an article in the local paper about her last summer, I was intrigued to learn a little about her past in Alaska and her start in music yada yada yada. I still didn't buy the CD. So at this time in my life, I only knew Jewel through my greedy eyes. But I never really thought about her. Then she began appearing in Casey Kasem's top 40 with WWSYS and I didn't think it was that great. Week after week her song climbed the chart. The song really did nothing for me, I just like the part where she scatted (is that the word?...la di di da...). WWSYS peaked and then slowly fell. Then in November I heard YWMFM. At first I thought it was country (but would they play it on a non-country radio station?). So I was iffy, but I never really LISTENED to it the first time. After hearing it again, it instantly became a favorite. Yet, I still did not buy the CD. I didn't buy it until February 16 of this year. Originally, I was going to buy the single but I decided to get POY and I also bought Sheryl Crow at the same time that day. So when I got home I put in Sheryl Crow and very much enjoyed the CD and somewhat confused lyrics. I can't say I thought the same when I put in POY. I thought this would be a CD that would rarely get played and it was money that I had wasted. I listened to it very little compared to the Sheryl Crow CD the first few weeks. There were only a few songs I liked on POY (including YWMFM and Painters). Then I played it and absolutely was overwhelmed by her beautiful voice. I started reading the lyrics and thought what an amazing songwriter she was. It had to sink in for me because the music she played was different from what I normally listened to. After that her beauty no longer became a problem for me because I wasn't in love with her body. I was in love with her voice, her guitar, and what she had to say. That was about a month after I bought her CD and right after I moved. There were so many feelings that I connected with all at once. With me, my family, and especially problems my friends were facing that were no longer 15 mins down the road, but 2 hours. I began spreading the love of Jewel to them over the Internet and a couple of visits. It seemes to be that YWMFM happened to be our song, because we all felt separated from each other. Our freindships were so valuable and thank God they still are. Ironically, that was the week YWMFM hit #1 on Casey Kasem. A week after my birthday. Ever since then, Jewel has become part of my daily life, I started looking at websites and stuff that featured her. One friend informed me of her audio website and eventually from that I stumbled upon this somewhat perfect community. The problem is, I now feel that I have tainted it. From what these people have been saying, there is no way I could be a true fan of Jewel, because I didn't start to get into her until her wave of popularity started. Every time someone posts about Jewel, wishing it were just like the Innerchange days just does not understand the impact Jewel has had on me. To me I feel like I have been stabbed in the back by all of these people who have such negative responses to her popularity. Her popularity can be positive. But to tell you the truth, I didn't buy POY because of her poularity, but I did buy it during her unbelievable start to it. I don't waste my money on any of the mags she appears in. I only have POY and Unplugged. I not only love POY, but I love the new versions of her songs (i.e. YWMFM and FG). So I am very sorry for taking advantage of Jewel. I'm sorry that just about no matter what Jewel does, I respect her decision and am very happy for her. I'm sorry for the part I took in making Jewel rise so much in popularity. I'm sorry that a few of my friends have went to buy her CD because of my recommendation...I'm sorry for making a tape of POY and giving it to a friend because she didn't have any money. I'm sorry that I was never able to see Jewel at the Innerchange. I'm sorry I didn't live in San Diego or have the money to fly all the way to San Diego to hear the ravings of people who had heard her. I'm sorry I didn't see her on the tour of East Coast Coffeehouses because it's not very easy for me to drive 10 hours to Philadelphia or if she played in an Atlanta coffeehouse, I'm sorry I couldn't go, because that would still be 2 hours and seeing that I'm only 17 now, and would have been 15 or 16 at the time...that would be unfathomable for my parents. I didn't mean to pollute the innocence of YOUR Jewel, since you people seem to own her. Since you know what is best for her...although she is her own person and knows what she is doing. It just angers me at the people who can't be happy for Jewel. Maybe she will decline in popularity...maybe she'll be popular forever (God forbid). But I'm almost sure there are people who have bought magazines featuring Jewel then said..."Hmmm, maybe I should buy POY." Then did and connected with it...maybe right off (unlike me) or maybe it took them time to connect with it (like me). If her popularity helps one person get through life at hard times like it has for me...then I MUST CONGRATULATE HER!!! She has done what she set out to do. Even if it is only one person. I truly think that God was with me and He helped me realize the beauty of her voice and what she was saying to help me (and even some of my friends...that now live what seems to be forever away) get through some of my (their) trials. But the fact of the matter, I believe there are many more people that she has touched according to the huge number of people on this list. "I'm down on my knees, begging you please"...begging for your forgiveness of the part I have played in making her popular. I'm sorry that YWMFM still makes me want to cry and other times all I do is cry during the song for both the POY version, the single version, the video...I AM VERY SORRY. I didn't mean to like the FG video and the new version also. I just thought that they were very great, maybe not as great as the original, but something to be very proud of. I'm watching the new video for OASIS and it is so very unoriginal...clips of the band singing, helicopters, people (something that had been done in the ground)...blah blah blah...something Jewel never has in any of her videos, and I hope never does, I love the little storylines her videos seem to have. So if you have read this far, you have done a massive reading deed, or skimming deed (hopefully, you at least got the major points). There is no way I would have ever heard of Jewel if she was still on the other side of the US (I'm in Georgia). She would never have touched my life if she was still singing in coffeehouses...and I'm sure she wouldn't have touched others. So I am sorry for becoming a Jewel freak during the rise of her popularity, I didn't mean to rape you virginal queen. Okay, I'm done ranting and raving or being very emotional about this topic or whatever you want to call it. I can't help that I'm an emotional guy out there in the world. the milkman "I'm sensitive and I'd like to stay that way."-Jewel *I'm Sensitive* P.S. That's the name of track # 9. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Jul 1997 12:26:52 -0500 (CDT) From: dkaracos@marlin.utmb.edu (Derrick) Subject: Is it Jewel...or not? (Re: FG video) I noticed in the FG video that they show the face of the "double" several times (the girl in the white dress). My question is, when they show her face, is that her or is that Jewel? I think it's the double, mainly because there's a gap in between her two front teeth, Jewel doesn't have that. And she's does look slightly different. I think Jewel wears the black dress throughout the whole video, and the double is wearing the white. Just my guess...any other's agree? Also, I noticed at the beginning, it sounds as if the tape is spliced together...like they edited it there but didn't quite get it to fit perfectly. After she says, "were always crazy like that." Then when she says "I watched from my window..." that part sounds like it comes in a little too soon. Listen and see what you think. Like they did a bad editing job there. Other than that, I think the video is ok...a little basic on the color usage, but still ok. I like the horse scenes, but am clueless about why the kimono's are there, and think her look-a-like does look ALOT like her...even more than Renee Zellweger...of course make-up can do wonders. I think they purposely made Jewel up that way so she would look more like her double, and vice-versa. The pace seemed about like the original but the sound was "thin". Not near as full as the other versions...I think she does it best on the unplugged show. I wish they would make that into a CD. My question is, when they show her > face, is that her or is that Jewel? I think it's the double, mainly because No, it's Jewel that they show. Jewel wears the black dress for most of the video, but for those couple shots that you see her "double's" face, well... it's not the double, it's Jewel. I know that for sure. Watch it again, and you'll see that it's Jewel. Unless of course, the double is Jewel's identical twin! ;) Remember that post from Lenedra when she was describing the video? I'm pretty sure I remember her saying that Jewel was wearing a black dress for most of it and a white for a little bit. However, I have noticed one shot where as the double and the camera are turning around a little bit, you can see the actual double's face for a split second. But she looks quite different from Jewel, so Jewel is wearing the white dress in parts of the vid. ALSO... ANYONE CONFUSED ABOUT THE VINYL NEW RELEASE READ THIS!!!! I've noticed some people that are confused and think that the vinyl release is actually Jewel's new album. It's not!!! The vinyl album is a re-release of POY that has 4 (I think) extra tracks that aren't on the regular POY. As far as I can remember, the extra tracks are: Emily, Everything Breaks, Chime Bells, and.... crap, can't remember the other one. But anyway, for anyone who's confused about it...Jewel does not have a new album coming out, it's just POY on vinyl w/ some extra stuff. :) *hugs* Emily ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Jul 1997 11:13:48 -0700 From: Victor Igor Wasylczenko Subject: [Fwd: I'm famous! I return to San Diego after being gone for close to three years, and I'm famous among the incredible singer/songwriter circuit, even though no one actually knew who I was. I've been asked at least a half dozen times at various coffeehouses, after mentioning that I'm on the internet, if I'm familiar with the EDA's (Every Day Angels - the Jewel list which I helped found and am no longer a member of.) Tonight I got to see another of my old favorites, Joy Eden Harrison, perform at a nice coffeehouse called Clair de Lune. For anyone who's interested in the Jazz-influenced ecto thread, Joy would be a wonderful purchase. Her first (and still only) disc is called Angel Town on Cargo Records. It falls somewhere between kd lang's torch songs and the Holly Cole Trio. Joy sings original compositions that have a bit of a hipster jazz feel mixed with a bit of torch song chanteusse, a touch of Joni Mitchell and a touch of Rickie Lee Jones. (Speaking of RLJ, I missed her recent San Diego performance, but the papers talked about her interesting new album and it's wanderings into trip-hop. Anyone heard it?) Joy opened her set with a bunch of songs I knew from Angel Town and years ago, though now she fronts a jazz trio that consists of her on guitar and a keyboardist and drummer. The sound was fuller and freer than the acoustic performances I'd seen before. Following this, she spread out into her new material, which takes many twists and turns from what she was doing before. Some of the tunes took a wilder jazz approach a la Amy X Neuburg, while others, like Yellow, mixed in (possibly beat influenced) storytelling. There was an a capella number which I vaguely recall had comments relating love and tournequets, before the set ended with the drummer and keyboardist clapping out counter rhythms as a backup to Joy's singing. I was amazed at the variety and experimentation in the set, since previously she'd been working in a much narrower range. I chatted with her on her break and talked about seeing her years ago (winning immediate bonus points by noting that she looked much younger now then she did then [which was also true]). She asked me about the EDAs, and we talked about the early Jewel days. She praised the EDAs highly for a house concert tour some people are setting up, and was amazed at how many people had been exposed to her music due to some of her songs showing up on a popular Jewel bootleg. I admitted to having made that bootleg, and she was really enthusiastic, thanking me repeatedly for all the help in getting her music out there. Later, after an equally strong second set, she dedicated the final song to me and the owner of the coffeehouse, while telling the story of the underground tape circulating around the internet. The song was one of my old favorites (not on Angel Town, but on the bootleg), which she introduced as God Damn Cowboy, or the Pony Boner Song, as it apparently became known around the Innerchange. Anyway, I was quite flattered by all the attention. She was taping the show tonight, and a bunch of other shows to shop around as demos for her next album, and I encouraged her to consider selling some on her mailing list (or at least giving me copies!). If any of the above info has intrigued people enough to want a disc, and you can't find it in your local store, let me know and I'll be happy to pick up a copy at a future show. She also asked me about the scene in Maryland, and I had to admit that as far as I could tell, the singer/songwriter world in San Diego was far above anywhere I knew of. There are at least a half dozen coffeehouses that provide quality places for top notch local artists to perform almost any night of the week. I could easily see an excellent show any night this week except Monday, which is really remarcable. While I know there isn't even a single venue in Maryland, and probably only Iota in Arlington, that provides anything like what you have here, I was wondering if there are any other cities that are as supportive of local musicians (singer/songwriters in particular)?
