I haven't seen the magazine yet, so didn't have an opinion of it yet, but since the main feature is about the Lilith Fair, then of course she should not be the only artist on the cover. She is beautiful, but is it fair to leave off Tracy Chapman, who from nearly _every_ review I've seen of Lilith fair, both on the Jewel list and in major publications, is stealing every show with her phenomenol performances (and from seeing her live last year, I know Tracy is amazing live, her's was the best concert I've ever been to, including Jewel), or not to include Sarah McClachlan, without whom there would be no tour at all. I think it would have also been nice to include Suzanne Vega, another groundbreaker for women in music along with Tracy. A cover with these four women -- 2 groundbreakers (Tracy and Vega), the organizor of the event (Sarah), and the up-and-comer (Jewel) would be nice. I'm also only considering those who have already been in Lilith, not those joining later. I too wish Jewel wasn't alone on the cover... - -- Mark A. My personal angel was watching me yesterday -- at least, that's one possible explanation for it. Thanks to a tip from the ever-vigilant Mike Connell, I was alerted to a concert by Patty Griffin only two hours' drive from me on Sunday the 13th. Better yet, I knew exactly where the venue was, in a nice area of Louisville filled with record stores and cool people. I tried to contact the guitar store which was hosting the concert, but the phone rang and rang. Figuring it was not a huge presentation (the store is an average-sized shop in a row of old buildings), I decided to drive down and wing it. Well, I arrived on Bardstown Rd. near the Guitar Emporium about noon local time, and there was no sign of activity yet. Signs indicated that tickets were being sold next door at the Twice Told cafe, so I wandered over to check. The nice young lady behind the counter (hi, Laura!) told me that they were still setting up and had no idea how many tickets would be sold. She took my name and asked me to come back about 5 PM when they'd be going on sale. It occurred to me that this was kind of an odd way to sell tickets, waiting till the last minute, but I went to eat lunch and do some shopping while the clock ticked. Coming back at 5, I wandered into the cafe and asked about tickets. "Sold out", I was told. Oh, well, no problem, Laura took my name down. The people behind the counter looked at me stupidly, and didn't seem to know her, or why she would be taking names. I finally figured out that they had been checking to see if any ADDITIONAL tix would be put on sale after seating had been set up, as the concert had been sold out the day before. There was no indication anywhere on the dozens of handbills that the concert was sold out, BTW. Bummed, I headed back toward my car, thinking about other places I could visit on my way back home, so as not to totally waste the trip. As I approached the guitar store, some guy wearing a tattered T-shirt and pair of shorts walked past, lugging mic stands and audio equipment. He hailed me; "How's it going?" As I moved to hold the door open for him, I muttered, "Not too good. Show's sold out." He eyed me. "How far did you drive?" I told him I was from Indianapolis. He nodded and said, "OK. Since you drove so far to see her, I'll let you in. But it's really going to be packed, so you might have to stand." Wondering how he was going to manage this, I told him it didn't matter if I had to hang from the ceiling fan. "OK. You hang out, go have a drink or something, and be back here before the doors open. I'll get you in." He smiled, and disappeared inside with the gear. I wasn't sure who this guy was (tour manager? store employee? record company lackey?) so I wasn't completely reassured. Nonetheless, I browsed the area, bought and read the new Interview with Jewel on the cover, and bumped into Patty twice as she was shopping the neighborhood! For those who care, she likes several varieties of incense, which I gather she burns to improve the atmosphere while relaxing or writing. I spotted her having a chat with some seeming bystanders on the street, too. She later commented that the people in Louisville were so friendly, she found herself having long conversations with complete strangers... Well, show time neared. I hung out in front of the store as a small line formed, and I waited for my nascent benefactor to return. If it wasn't a scam, I told myself with some bemusement. I spotted Laura from the cafe, and she asked me if I had had any luck. I told her the story, identifying the mystery man by his clothing (he hadn't mentioned his name). She smiled and said, "Oh -- so he's going to get you in; good." I still had no idea who he was, so I averred, admitting only that he said he would try. Laura informed me that he had gone home to change, and would be back in just a few minutes. Puzzled, I thanked her as she went on back to the cafe. The line continued to grow. Minutes before doors-open, here came the guy across the street, wearing a slightly cleaner set of clothing and still-wet hair. He made eye contact, and signaled me over to him. With a reaching-around kind of hand gesture, he "pulled" me into the store ahead of him, and said, "OK. Ticket will be $10, please." Same price everyone else paid. I paid him; he smiled and said, "Pick a seat"... gesturing to the array of empty chairs facing the stage. Then he turned to the others inside and began preparing for the onslaught of attendees; no one particularly paid any attention to me. Well -- duh -- I had figured out that this guy had some clout, but I was way too shy to demand that he identify himself at this point! So I gingerly worked my way down the aisles, and picked a seat about 6 rows back from the stage. I judged there would be reserved seats at the very front, and I wanted to make sure that everyone who arrived before I did would have a chance to pick a good seat. 6th row aisle was a great seat, though! People filed in a few minutes later, and the venue heated up dramatically with 200 people crammed into a space designed for maybe 20-30 customers and lots of guitars. Most of the remaining instruments hung on the walls, giving a rather comfortable feel to the venue. I was immune to surprises by now, so when my benefactor took the stage to welcome us to the concert, I finally put it together. Rick is the owner of the Twice-Told cafe which sponsored the event; I guess he had the authority to let me in, all right. My brain is still fuzzy from lack of sleep, and so I forget the name of the three guys who opened for Patty. They're locals, three vocalists -- one of whom plays the guitar -- who do some excellent harmonies and perform a number of original folk-type tunes. The crowd responded well, and I wouldn't mind seeing them again myself. They had a modest stage presence and really appreciated the reception they got. Shades of JewelStock. We got a 30-minute intermission before Patty came on, during which Rick encouraged us to go over to the cafe -- or anywhere -- and bring back a drink to help us stay cool and avoid dehydration. The owner of the guitar store told us "That's why you all have the hand stamps, so go get a drink." The mind boggles at the thought of 200 people with sodas in a guitar store. Finally, Patty took the stage to a huge round of applause. She said hello and launched into an incredible uptempo rendition of "Cain", complete with some really fancy fingerwork and slamming reminiscent of Ani Difranco. :-) The audience went berserk at its conclusion; at this point I knew it was going to be a great concert. She was fairly chatty between songs, too; telling stories while making sure her guitar was in tune for the next number. Patty used two Gibson acoustics and a Taylor so she wouldn't have to extensively retune her axes. One Gibson seemed to be set to open G tuning, and she only used it on one or two songs. I could clearly hear her pick striking the guard sometimes, she was strumming so viciously. She was working up a sweat, too, in the stifling atmosphere of the klieg lights which illuminated the stage. After Mike, her manager, set up a fan on the stage, she seemed to get even more into her set, and the quality of her performance improved noticeably. We were treated to about half the songs from her CD, plus at least 4 new tunes. Here's the set list as best I can reconstruct it: Cain Sweet Lorraine Moses Maine Song (?) Poor Man's House Flamin' Red Falling Down Mad Mission Buck Naked Heart Dirty Little Wiggly Fingers Goodbye Every Little Bit Crazy ENCORE Forgiveness Bubba She omitted at least one song from the set list, and added another; this list is the result of comparing my memory and the actual set list. One of the little stories she told was about her recent move from Boston to Nashville. She claims it's even hotter in Boston during the summer because so few apartments have air conditioning, and told the secret to staying cool: take a cold shower, don't towel yourself off, leave your clothes on the floor, go to the refrigerator and pull out a big chunk of watermelon, and sit near an open window eating the melon. Guaranteed to work, Patty claims. Her vocal work, especially on "Every Little Bit", "Mad Mission" and "Poor Man's House", was first-rate. I am convinced that Patty can sing any note in her range with glass-shattering volume and purity if she so desires. Even more interesting, and a change from previous concerts, she varied her guitar picking from shredding intensity down to an almost-inaudible caress, depending on the mood of the song. I think it worked pretty well, and the shouts, whistles and thunderous applause from the crowd indicate that they concurred. She brought the concert to a close with a nice anecdote about hearing Patsy Cline on the radio just after covering one of her better-known songs at a concert in New York. I knew what was coming... she delivered a well-paced, evocative rendition of "Crazy" that took my breath away, and catapulted the audience to its feet as the final note faded. No one sat down till she returned for the encore. As she finished the song about Bubba's, the crowd erupted into another standing ovation, no one stopping until the PA finally switched to playing a CD and the lights came up. I was covered in a sheen of sweat, only partially caused by the heat; of the three times I've enjoyed Patty in concert, this was by far the most intense performance I've seen. Rick took the stage and announced that Patty would be stopping at the cafe to chat with her fans, and that everyone was welcome to come in, have a snack, and visit with her till she decided to go home. As everyone filed politely out the front door, I wandered over to the stage for a moment to lean over the fan and dissipate some of the heat that had accumulated during the previous three hours. There, one corner tucked under her mic stand, was the evening's set list. I looked both ways, then retrieved the souvenir carefully. Hehe. Then, out the door, where I finally managed to confront Rick and thank him with full knowledge of what he had done for us all that evening. He was in quite a good mood, and reiterated his invitation to come over and visit Patty at the cafe. I wandered over, got a glass of iced tea, and joined the 20 or so people who were similarly inclined. As we got near the front of the line, Patty's manager spotted me, and inquired if we had met before. I wasn't sure if we had, so I identified myself and he remembered my name from talking to Dan Stark and Mike Connell. By this point, he was getting REAL friendly, so I talked to him for a few minutes about the EDAs and how we're all big supporters of Patty's career. :-) It was my turn to speak to Patty about then, so I passed greetings from Dan, Mike, Larry and the EDAs, and asked formal permission to steal her setlist. She not only agreed, she took it and wrote a nice little note on it. She and Mike both thanked me warmly for coming to the concert, and sent their appreciation to the EDA community. It was a very pleasant encounter; she's coming back to the same place next month (Nashville's only a 3-4 hour drive from Louisville), so I told them I'd probably be there too. It was a great end to a busy and exciting evening. I must give a public thanks to Rick and the staff of Twice Told Cafe for making it possible for me to attend, and for making the experience entirely fun in spite of the last-minute surprises that manage to catch up with everyone. I still had 2 hours of driving to get back home myself, so I hit the road and managed to navigate home without getting dangerously drowsy. I had about 3 hours of sleep for the previous 3 nights, so falling asleep wasn't much of a trick. Now to get that setlist framed before one of the cats decides it will make a nice chew-toy... - -- | Greg Dunn | A fatal attraction, holding me | | gregdunn@indy.net | fast... how can I escape this | | GregDunn@aol.com | irresistible grasp? | | http://members.aol.com/gregdunn | Pink Floyd | ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Jul 1997 06:11:23 -0400 (EDT) From: "Mark Anthony Miazga" Subject: NJC: mailing lists? The others might have some kind of problem with their publicity managers whatever else...god knows!!! ;) So....we might never know why her...but she definitely is extremely deservant of such an honor. I don't know enough about the other ladies to say the same about them. I always thought that was more of an "everyone can follow their dreams" type of statement. And I don't think she's talking about the fame or fortune aspects at all. I think from a certain point of view to live within your dreams the the best measure of success; to love so much, without reserve what people pay you to do. Maybe you dream of being a doctor and work really hard, and become the best doctor you can be and you love it and all your patients are so grateful for that funktionlust (sp sorry my german isn't all that great) that allows you to live within your dream. I think, at least I hope that's what she's talking about. If the measure of success is to live within your dream and to love life, then anyone can be as successful as Jewel Kilcher. Just my spin on things, James. ========================================================================== James McGarry | jmcgarry@UoGuelph.CA - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- What sets worlds in motion is the interplay of differences, their attractions and repulsions; life is plurality, death is uniformity. - - Octavio Paz ========================================================================== ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Jul 1997 9:19:33 -0400 (EDT) From: CONNELL@taurus.cs.lmco.com Subject: Foolish Games on a chart already!! Hi y'all, Just got the new Hits World internet charts for the week (voted on by folk on the Net). Foolish Games debuted this week at #32 on the top 50!!! Highest debut of the week! last week it was #62(?) and two weeks ago it was in the 90's. I predict top ten within three weeks, at least on this chart. I have spent hours upon hours pausing, rewinding, and playing the tape in slow motion but I cannot get the main riff to sound like what whatever he is playing. He is "hammering on" "pulling off" and frankly I just got dizzy after awhile, needless to say that I am not very good at tabbing things out. The rest of the song I think I can figure out seeing as I do have it on tape and all. I know it is in drop D tuning, and I think that is a grrreat start. SO if there are any diehard guitar players out there who know how to play "Silver Lining" I would be indebted if you could send the tab my way or point me in the right direction. Thanks. I think this is one of her best pictures taken yet, and the article on her wasn't too bad either. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Jul 1997 09:27:28 -0400 From: Akira Subject: Jewel's talent. I think what Jewel is trying to say about what she has accomplished is within everyone's ability is that everyone has an innate sense of goodness within themselves, and everyone has the ability to tap into it and withdraw something of beauty and substance from it. Now what that beauty might manifest itself into is another story. Not everyone can write music and poetry like Jewel ( I am living proof of that), but we can show our love of life in other ways. The way we interact with people, sculpting, drawing, writing, dreaming, etc. If we put our minds to THE goal of creating something of beauty, and not to a specific goal such as writing a song or poem, then we all are equal in ability. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Jul 1997 09:55:04 -0400 From: Carl Jamison Subject: Re: Last musician on cover of TIME? good guess but i can recall not to far back that one mr. eddie vedder was on the cover of time magazine. just him. it was a cool artical too. well hope i helped.
