[Greg Dunn ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 15 Jul 1997 00:09:25 -0400 (EDT) From: "Mark Anthony Miazga" Subject: musical recommendation (from an unusual place) I'd like to recommend a cd from an artist that may surprise you, but it's one of the finest pure pop albums of the year and perhaps marks the biggest comeback in pop music since Suzanne Vega's wonderful "Nine Objects of Desire" last year. It's Deborah (she's now the artist formerly known as Debbie) Gibson's latest cd, _Deborah_. Just a little background... Gibson's first five albums -- _Out of the Blue_, _Electric Youth_, _Anything is Possible_, _Body Mind Soul_, and _Greatest Hits_ were all on her original label, Atlantic. Through a mutual decision (Deb wanted more control of her music, Atlantic wanted more sales), the two parted ways, and she released 1995's _Think with your heart_ on a small label, SBK. The album was almost entirely slow ballads and had a sameness to it that was unfortunate, despite a superb big band stomper called "Too Fancy". SBK and Gibson parted ways, and she started her own record company, called Espiritu. This last album has been out for months, but just now has a distribution deal been found. Now it should be findable around. Anyway, the album is by far her best work ever. Combining the fun catchiness of her 80's work with a newfound maturity, Gibson has crafted a fine ensemble of songs that shocked me in not only their listenability but also their sheer quality. Such songs as "Only Words" and "Butterflies are Free" could be hits, as they have intelligent lyrics and catchy melodies, not to mention their quality production. The rest of the album is fine, also. Gibson's never been better -- she's proven that when given creative control, she can exhibit quality -- and while the same old Gibson weaknesses appear (weak voice, lyrics that talk only of love gone bad), she still has crafted an album that lets her talents shine like never before. I think what she really means is that she doesn't think she's so much better than everyone else. She is a great talent, and knows it, I'm sure. You can't go singing in front of people if you thinkyou suck. Think about it, if you're a great teacher, or doctor or something, you don't become world famous. But if you can sing and entertain people, you become famous. She's not really saying we can all sing like her, of course we can't. She's saying we can all be successful in our own way, and we shouldn't feel inferior to her. One post only, and I'm gone from this thread. :-) >First came records, invented by Edison which came to be known as VINYL. Pretty good summary. But Edison visualized the recording medium as a metal or phenolic cylinder coated with wax (which actually retained the impressions of the cutting stylus) You occasionally hear records referred to as "wax" or "hot wax". Also, the first (78 RPM) discs were usually made from a very hard material such as shellac. It wasn't till the '50s that it was common for records to be made from plastic (of which family, vinyl is a member). >A record only holds about 30 minutes per side. This is what Jewel will be >re-releasing POY on. The recording time of a vinyl disc is dependent on the amplitude of the signal recorded on it. To put more than 20 minutes on a side reduces the dynamic range of the recording severely. Nonetheless, it is sometimes done. :-) >Then came cassette tapes. I'm not even gonna explain this, except that they >came out because they had much better quality than 8-tracks. The tape inside an 8-track moved at twice the speed of a cassette and was actually able to support twice the bandwidth. The problem was in the movable-head playback mechanism, which got out of alignment very easily and made the sound suck. Also, 8-tracks, once they jammed (the continuous loop mechanism made this inevitable) were usually unrepairable. And that "switch tracks in the middle of the song" design limitation was unbearable. Cassettes were introduced as a small alternative to reel-based tape. One small self-contained package allowed people to make voice recordings that lasted up to two hours (because the tape ran so slowly) and you could slip the tape in your pocket. Many years of research in transport design and tape formulation were necessary before cassettes surpassed the native quality of 8-track. Even today, cassettes suffer from dynamic range and bandwidth restrictions due to their slow transport speed. The distortion and bandwidth of a cassette are orders of magnitude worse than a vinyl record. OK, that's all. :-) - -- | Greg Dunn | A fatal attraction, holding me | | gregdunn@indy.net | fast... how can I escape this | | GregDunn@aol.com | irresistible grasp? | | http://members.aol.com/gregdunn | Pink Floyd | ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Jul 1997 00:40:32 -0400 (EDT) From: SDAngelLI@aol.com Subject: Radio Astronomy I spoke with Jewel in San Diego just before Hot Dog Fest regarding our help with an old matter. She asked a small audience that at the sound check during her last concert of the "tiny lights tour" to start calling radio stations and request her new single "Foolish Games" I told her that we were working on a Rugburn song, that Steve told me was released. Turns out that the song was not released. Anyway Jewel asked that we start requesting FG. The radio stations didn't have the CD yet, at the time so a few list veterans advised that we wait until now. For you newbies, Jewel is not only a favorite singer that we all share. She's a good friend to all of us! You may never have met her, and still she holds a special place in heart for you as an EDA. When Chelsea and I met her in Denver, Chelsea mentioned "Everyday Angels" and Jewel's face lit up like we were her family. Please, help our friend out by calling as many radio stations as you possibly can. When we call a radio station, we are not Everyday Angels or fans of Jewel in an unconventional way. We are fans of music, in general and a sample of the general population of listeners, and the song that we want to hear, is "Foolish Games" by Jewel. If you choose to call a radio station outside of your area, dial *67 first so that you make it immpossible for them to trace the call. The Cindy Lee Berryhill / Elizabeth Hummel Living Room Tour stops right HERE next month! Tuesday, August 5, 1997 at our house in Greenfield, IN, the renowned duo from San Diego will perform a one-evening acoustic concert in our living room; attendance is open to all! After a successful couple of private appearances already in Toledo and Boston, you won't want to miss this one. I'm asking a $10 donation from each attendee, and I would really really like to have everyone confirm in advance if at all possible, to avoid disappointment. We'll probably have space for 25 people in our living room, and I don't want a SRO crowd because I want everyone to enjoy the show instead of being crushed like a sardine. :-) I'd like everyone who seriously plans to attend, to let me know before July 29. If we're short, that will give me a chance to entice some more people to attend. :-) I want to emphasize that there is limited seating, so if you're really serious about attending, let me know ASAP. I won't insist on advance payment, but it will definitely guarantee you a good seat. :-) *** UPDATE *** So far (14 July) I have 4 confirmed attendees -- 2 EDAs and 2 locals. C'mon, people, reports from their last tour indicate that this is an event not to be missed. Don't pass up a chance to see these talented performers before their star rises like Jewel's! Let's prove to them we can pack the house with cheering supporters and send them on their way to Liz's with the applause still echoing in their ears. Email me for personalized directions to the concert. There will be limited crash space available to EDAs who need to spend the night, first come first served. We'll do what we can to help everyone out.
