Hi all, Just a quick note to say hi & let you know all is well with Jewel & Co. The family will be attending Jewel's Grandmother's (Ruth,Atz's mother) funeral later this week. The show in Anchorage went great last night & there's another one tonight. Jewel recieves the key to the city (of Anchorage) this afternoon. What does this mean? Hmmm. We don't know..... The TIME Magazine cover hits the stands today. A nice (but brief) article, beautiful photos & another article of interest to fans of the various Lilith Fair performers. Most interesting Jewel quote: "People look at me in magazines & feel like I'm a phenonenon, as if what I've accomplished is beyond their ability. I tell them to knock it off. If you respect what I've done, then do something yourself." I hope you folks love the "Future Folklore" tapes & I'd like to publicly thank Mike for taking care of administration on this in my absence. (Look for his signup info in your mailbox-everyone got it.) Hope everyone is well & I look forward to seeing many of you in Bearsville this weekend! I definitely feel that there are such things are doing the right thing for the wrong reasons. But I think you've hit on the main issue, that of human motivation. What is it that motivates us to do certain things? Is it self-interest, or is it because we care? I definitely believe this is something each of us has to answer for ourselves. There are as many possible answers as there are creatures on this earth. :) > And then i thought about some of the 'good' things i sometimes do...i help > the elderly because, to be honest, i feel sorry for them and i feel as if > though they need me (kind of like, if not me, then who?)...i never once > thought i was doing it just to make people think that i was a good person and > get showered with compliments...i've done it many times to make myself feel > good about me and who i am...but do we, as people, do 'good' for the same > reason that bad people do it? self interest, and no other? > -Steve I would even say that not even good and good or even bad and bad people do the same things for necessarily the same reasons. Each of us grew up with a different set of experiences, beliefs, and values. In many ways our own perspectives will be unique to ourselves in forming who we are. Not everyone will understand at times what we're thinking, or why we believe or feel strongly about certain things, but that's ok. A lot of it comes from trying to understand other people and being sensitive to them. I know a lot of people who go through life feeling as though the world revolves around them and they will do whatever it takes to get whatever they want. So is that kind of selfishness classified as good or bad? It's a judgement call based on each individual's values and beliefs really. It all comes down to what each of us defines as good or bad, and eventually what it is we hope to accomplish in the course of living every day. :) In the end, the only person who knows for sure what motivates us to do certain things is ourselves. ^_^ > > P.S. I know, they're kind of a pain to read at times, but the situation with Peter has brought to my attention a very old problem. Now I'm sure Peter is a nice person and didn't mean offense, but to me, the issue wasn't funny literally or sarcastically. Not to put Peter on the spot, since there are a number of people who do this, but ask yourself if you made this post to a Native American discussion group whether people there would accept it as sarcastic and in good taste: > PS. Don't you think the martians might take slight offense to us mere > Earthlings selling their home? > The American Indians didn't seem to mind If the answer is no, then you can't assume everyone here, as angelic as we all are, will necessarily be sure what is going through the mind of the individual who posted this. Not everyone will agree, but to me Peter's post, as unintentional as it was, was a very negative post. Some friends of mine took the extra step and stated that the person who wrote it was a bigot and a racist or incredibly stupid. Some of my hispanic friends would even say it was a very "Anglo" thing to say. From Peter's experiences and background maybe this was fine, but not everyone will see it the same way he will. Now there *was* a slightly better way and clearer way for Peter to handle this: - ------ > PS. Don't you think the martians might take slight offense to us mere > Earthlings selling their home? *sarcasm on* > The American Indians didn't seem to mind *sarcasm off* - ------ or this: - ------ > PS. Don't you think the martians might take slight offense to us mere > Earthlings selling their home? > The American Indians didn't seem to mind. Not! :) - ------ In both cases it was clear, but notice how different the feel of the second one was from the first? I would still find the first one slightly offensive, but I'd let it slide as it's clear he didn't mean malevolence though the way it was done was still a bit offensive. The second one i'd chuckle and go on my merry way. I've seen so many posts from people advocating the importance of realizing that without facial expressions, voice tones, and hand gestures that it's hard to know for sure what people mean. This is absolutely true, but it's amazing to me how many people who write emails don't exercise this. Having been on line since '86, I know it is just as true now as it was then. But do you know what was amazing back then? We hardly ever had this kind of problem. The people back then posted exactly what they meant by using descriptors, smileys, etc, and you know, sometimes the posts real like cute screenplays but we all knew what we meant. As a newbie back then, I got tagged the same way I just tagged Peter - I assumed that others would understand I was kidding, and the truth is, you can't do that. As a writer of posts, you have to be clear- that doesn't mean you have to watch yourself ALL the time, just on certain topics that might be controversial. I've heard the lazy arguments that people don't want to have to explain themselves, but that's akin to saying that you really don't give a hoot about the rest of us. If you care, even a little about the rest of us, you'll try to make the attempt to word your posts so they're clear. People who don't feel they should or need to do so, are certainly free to feel that way, but don't be surprised if someone takes a post the wrong way if you aren't clear. It so happens with me that sexual harrassment and native peoples are very VERY personal topics for me, and so I took offense at Peter's email. Not everyone will necessarily feel that way with every topic, and that's fine, that's the way life is. But if you're treading on a possibly controversial topic, is typing a few extra words on a keyboard really too much to ask? This phenomena of greater misunderstandings manifested itself in enormous numbers only after they started letting everyone onto internet. This is not to say that everyone shouldn't have an opportunity to access the net. On the contrary, the more people on, the greater the diversity and perspectives. But because you have more people on, it does address the point that sometimes people really are, well, dumb. In my 11 years, I have really and honestly run across some really REALLY stupid people. To quote one of my friends: "No one is THAT stupid right? RIGHT??" Unfortunately as we both found out, it's not the case. In the early days of IRC, I've actually had to play a part in keeping young girls from being sexual harrassed right online. What was sad was that the offenders that were caught were little boys aged 9-13, busted by the local police department and sent off to juvy hall. Not all of us share the same backgkrounds, the same experiences, values, or beliefs. Each of us is unique and that's what makes the EDAs such a wonderful community. But we really do need to understand and acknowledge that because we're very diverse, we do need to make our hearts known clearly and not make the mistake of posting something that could be misinterpreted. This doesn't mean you have to watch every single word you ever type all the time, but that on sensitive topics you show a little sensitivity. And to illustrate this even more, I am a relatively soft spoken person, so if you go back and read this email with that tone, I imagine the entire tone of the letter changes. :) Now back to our regularly scheduled program. :) Albert Wang Dark Seraph bahamude@user1.channel1.com Jewel Quotes and QTs http://hugse1.harvard.edu/~wangal/jewel.html ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Jul 1997 13:06:20 -0400 (EDT) From: Am711@aol.com Subject: Re: Jewel using EDA picks OK, I must clear my mind right at this second. I've seen Jewel twice and she uses picks quite a bit: "Satellite", "Race Car Driver", "Rocker Girl", "Run Tonto Run", etc. However as you said, she is mainly a fingerstyle player. > I havent ever once seen her using one. So, just thought I'd add in my piece of mind! HUH? She doesn't hide her picks or her use of them. They're right out there attached to the microphone stand and when she grabs one, she starts strummin' away. (Karuna!) :) I'll admit when I saw her for the first time in '96 I was surprised to see her using picks because of POY's 0% pick content. But the records (I've learned SO much since I got a modem!) show that she's used picks since those Thursday nights at the Innerchange. Thought: I think we're giving this more attention than Jewel ever has! Is there going to be an EDA get-together at the Lilith Fair on July 22nd. Even though Jewel is not playing this venue, there has been some interest on the list of people going. So, if anyone wants, we may be able to organize something. If anyone wants to see me, i'm probably going to easily stick out. One, I'm male and two, I'll may be doing some work for RAINN (Rape, Abuse, Incest National Network) so I'll be wearing an Unlock the Silence t-shirt. (It has the RAINN logo on its back.) Admission is $10, and is scheduled to begin around 8:00-8:30 pm. The show should be wonderful, as Cindy Lee and Elizabeth are amazing performers. If you would like to attend (oh, please say you will!!!) please RSVP to me at JEWELFAN22@aol.com. If you have already RSVPd, there is no need to do so again! =) I live within a few miles of the Ohio Turnpike (80/90), 24, 475/23, and I-75. There are several hotels within a few miles of my house also. If you would like, you are welcome to crash on the floor, or if the mood fits you, you can camp in my backyard, which actually sounds like a lot of fun!!!!! =) At any rate, I hope that you can attend. It should be A LOT of fun seeing two of my favorite performers in an intimate setting, with my fellow EDAs. Hope to see you there!!!!
