Oh, and Karen was cool, and very warm, as usual, which always makes it a pleasure to be around. John-Eric and Farr...you guys crack me up! Phil (not the T-shirt guy), had just arrived from CanEDA and we bolted up to LA singing obnoxiously all the way! He was very impressed by this artist as well and enjoyed meeting the other EDA's...too bad he was so wiped out and we had to go back down to San Diego. Anway! This artist rocks!!! Not only musically, but she was more than cordial when we all approached her (made Farr's LIFE by hugging on him), various times, and was very thankful to all the EDA's for support. People as kind-hearted and trusting as EDAs will attract those who see an opportunity to control or manipulate the situation. It's hard to imagine that anywhere on the net one could find a group with as much positive spirit and idealism as we share here. And there's only been a handful, a very small number, of people preying on the EDAs' good nature -- and once they see that we won't stand for it, these types will back off. Still, a few people can do harm in various ways and it's important that we look after ourselves and each other and be aware of what's going on. Someone suggested it would be good if there was some way to screen sellers on the list (like maybe be sure someone's been an EDA for a few months before they sell things to the list) -- who knows if this is too complicated to organize. In any event, it's always good to make sure you have established a good feeling and know about something or someone on-line before getting involved with money or joining a group (especially if there's a pseudo-religious overtone to the postings). I guess what Chris is asking, what won't we stand for, is we won't stand for people trying to take advantage of the goodness of EDAs. If anyone gets ripped off, there'll be other EDAs to make up for it with Angel Food or in other ways. And if anyone gets sucked into a cult-type situation, or feels manipulated in any way, then EDAs can come to the rescue and help out that person as well. There are a few easy steps everyone should do when dealing with anyone over the internet. As someone who has purchased stuff constantly and never had a problem, I thought I'd share with you my survival guide. :) 1) Never send cash to someone you don't know. NEVER. If you send cash and it disappears there's no proof you ever sent it and it will never be recoverable. Send either check or Money Order where you have a receipt of some form. 1a) If you absolutely HAVE to send cash to someone you TRUST, wrap it up in paper so it's not obvious what it is. For overseas mail, wrapping it up in aluminum foil and then paper works well too. But try to avoid sending cash as much as possible to protect yourself. 2) If you're purchasing anything, always ask for a reference list. The Professionals always have a reference list handy of people they've successfully done business with over the Internet. Anyone who doesn't have one or doesn't know what one is, be VERY WARY of. They're either amateurs or the bad guys. The best traders/sellers will have 7+ references. 3) Email as many people on this reference list as possible. Reference lists should have at least 5 people, all from different addresses and places. Email all of them and find out 1) is the person you're buying from reliable? 2) Was the merchandise you received what you expected, and 3) Was the merchandise you ordered sent to you in a reasonable amount of time. Most people here can vouch for one another, but if you don't know who the person is or are unsure if you can trust them, following these 3 simple steps will protect you in the long run. > > stand for... that sort of behaviour is against all the ideals of > EDAs. If > we make a stand this list can retain its goodness for all. > Adrian- what exactly are the ideals of EDAs? What won't we stand for? I > very much like and approve of the idea that we keep each other informed of > possible threats to the community, like scammers and cults, because that's > the first step in ultimately stopping the bad guys- or at least convincing > them to move onto easier targets. Chris- :) What does being an EDA mean to you? Does it mean being honest at all times? Does it mean watching out for your friends and family? Does it mean doing your best to help people and to grant wishes to people if you can? To me it means all of these things and more. It means being yourself, being honest to yourself and others. It means warning others if you suspect danger, and it means helping people who are in need. It means literally being angels to each other, granting wishes, inspiring others, and giving hope where it's needed. It's genuinely caring about people and helping people because you really do care. It doesn't mean you have to be blind and assume everyone is good, everyone isn't. But it does mean being kind and forthright and honest and helpful if you can. Crunch had a delightful quote that encapsulates what the spirit is like. :) But back to internet commerce- Just as you wouldn't give money to a stranger for something you haven't seen or isn't on display, you shouldn't do it either when buying something over the net unless you have a good reason to trust them. You have exercise your judgement and carefully consider what you're doing especially when dealing with people you don't know. Knowing them as trustworthy is a good reason. And obtaining a reference list and getting back confirmations may be a sufficient reason for you to trust them. But when dealing with money, never give someone faith blindly if you don't know them. Just some things to keep in mind. :) Exercise good judgement and your experiences over the net should be very nice. To this day, I haven't been ripped off ever and I've done over $1000 in internet commerce. The safest thing to do is if you have ANY doubt about someone, even if you want the thing they're selling really badly, don't get it. Nothing is worth the kind of anxiety and frustration you go through if indeed they do rip you off. Ah... but the great feat of life, one that very few of us can do, is walk the careful line that delineates light and darkness. Crunch- you CAN do it both ways, watching your back (and more important, the backs of others) and still enjoy everything in front of you. That's the entire point that I was trying to make to the community- not only can you do this, you HAVE to do this, or else you lose out. I've walked on that fence many times, and yes, I've fallen to one side or another, but I always manage to get back on top and keep going. What's the secret? Two things. First, being enlightened. Big help. Second, having lots of friends who are equally enlightened. Enlightenment helps in that you can discern with great accuracy the intentions, emotions, and thoughts of those you deal with. You can "see" more than the average sleepwalking person. Enlightenment also helps in that you can shrug off almost anything without feeling the need for revenge. Having enlightened friends is even better, because watching your own back all the time can be tiring. When you've got a bunch of people all looking out for each other, you can easily trade off who's on guard duty. If you think about it, that's how the military does it- they don't send every soldier to the perimeter just to keep watch- they send a few and swap soldiers often so that everyone carries an equal share of responsibility while never being saddled with that job all the time. Just let's all remember the quote by Japanese artist Masaaki Hatsumi: "Enduring insult and humiliation, I drop all rancor, I desire no revenge." With luck and hope, the meaning of being an EDA coincides with my own personal beliefs. They are, in short: I train to protect life and health. I train to promote respect for the property and space of all. I train to develop significant and beneficial relationships. I train to promote the thoughtful expression of truth. I train to cultivate a positive attitude, a healthy body, and a clear mind. I train to communicate happiness and peace of mind. I train to promote harmony and positive momentum. I train to promote purposefully speaking from my heart. I train to promote the celebration of others' fulfillment. I train to promote the enjoyment of life. I train to promote the personal realization of truth. These were originally written in a slightly different form by a guy named Siddhartha Gautama around 2,500 years ago. The above version comes from a guy named Stephen K. Hayes. They're hard to live up to- intentionally so. But they're very worth living, at least to me. We'll see if they match up with what EDAs believe in time. That's my two cents. Chris ........................................................................ Christopher S. Short sets eliminated any indulgences, focusing on the heart of each artist's strengths. Women in the audience outnumbered men by about three to one, but each singer was backed by mostly male band members. What most of these women share is confessional and deeply wrought songwriting, often acoustically based. McLachlan's set included several beat-heavy numbers from "Surfacing," her Arista album due next week --- a contrast to her often-atmospheric work of the past, such as the ballad "Possession." Joking onstage about the bittersweet nature of her material, she's not the typical show-closing artist; she's more introspective than cathartic. Almost a decade after she made her impressive debut, Chapman (along with Vega) is almost an elder stateswoman. Though she began a little too low-key with several acoustic numbers from last year's comeback album, "New Beginning," the bluesy, tougher "Give Me One Reason," followed by an encore of her anthem "Talkin' About a Revolution," drew the liveliest crowd response of the day, bringing many to their feet dancing. THE TWO MOST DYNAMIC PERFORMANCES CAME FROM JEWEL AND COLE. Still stretching her boundaries --- including a provocative look in short shorts and high heels --- Jewel strapped on an electric guitar to rock harder than her best-known acoustic hits, tearing into a version of Patti Smith's "Dancing Barefoot" as well as offering several new songs that recalled the organ-anchored style of 1960s Bob Dylan, not to mention the country-rocker Lone Justice from a decade back. Cole, dressed like a belly dancer, writhing on her toes atop a Persian rug and pounding on the piano, was spellbinding; her short but punchy set was full of tension and release. Vega's voice sounded assured as ever with crafted story-songs laden with snapshot imagery, playing acoustic guitar accompanied only by a bassist. Notable performers on the two smaller stages included jazzy stylings of Cassandra Wilson and the more jagged-cut sounds of Leah Andreone. Running remarkably on time in only its fourth date, Lilith Fair is efficiently run. Outrageously long lines for women's restrooms led to the closing of several men's rooms, though the guys there didn't seem to mind at all. ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Jul 1997 17:12:06 -0700 From: That Little Voice Inside Your Head Subject: NJC: Angels Needs A Ride- Oceanfest Info Hi Angels Any of you going to Oceanfest?
